The Economic Costs Of Substance Abuse Treatment: Updated Estimates And Cost Bands For Program Assessment And Reimbursement, Michael T. French, Ioana Popovici, Lauren M. Tapsell Dec 2007

The Economic Costs Of Substance Abuse Treatment: Updated Estimates And Cost Bands For Program Assessment And Reimbursement, Michael T. French, Ioana Popovici, Lauren M. Tapsell

Michael T. French

Federal, state, and local government agencies require current and accurate cost information for publicly funded substance abuse treatment programs to guide program assessments and reimbursement decisions. The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment published a list of modality-specific cost bands for this purpose in 2002. However, the upper and lower values in these ranges are so wide that they offer little practical guidance for funding agencies. Thus, the dual purpose of this investigation was to assemble the most current and comprehensive set of economic cost estimates from the readily available literature and then use these estimates to develop updated modality-specific cost …

Clinician Assessments Of Workplace Security Training - An Informatics Perspective, Juanita Fernando, Linda Dawson Dec 2007

Clinician Assessments Of Workplace Security Training - An Informatics Perspective, Juanita Fernando, Linda Dawson

Associate Professor Linda Dawson

This paper describes and analyses clinicians’ assessments of workplace privacy and security (PaS) training in the context of contemporary health information system (HIS) practice. The PaS training underpins national e-health frameworks. The paper draws on findings from a forthcoming dissertation. The ‘questerview’ technique was applied to this case study of 26 clinicians in three Victorian (Australia) public hospitals. The technique relies on data collection that applies standardised questions and questionnaires during interviews. Respondents were recorded while they completed the standardised questions and questionnaires and were encouraged to discuss their responses to items in detail. Data analysis involved the scrutiny of …

Measuring The Unmeasurable: Maternal Piety Scales, Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D. Dec 2007

Measuring The Unmeasurable: Maternal Piety Scales, Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.

Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.

The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument that measures maternal spiritual characteristics. Particularly, the instrument aims to measure a domain of spirituality which is commonly regarded as “the un-measurable” i.e. Maternal Piety. The results provided evidence that the instrument achieved sound psychometrics properties.TLI, and CFI were > 0.90 and RMSEA was < 0.08 which were evidences for construct validity. Moreover, the findings supported the postulation that MP positively influenced MQR as evidence for the criterion-related validity. In short, Maternal Piety Scales is a reliable and valid instrument

Marketing Branch Libraries To Students Through Web Videos, Caroline L. Gilson, Brooke Cox Dec 2007

Marketing Branch Libraries To Students Through Web Videos, Caroline L. Gilson, Brooke Cox

Caroline L. Gilson

As branch librarians, we constantly look for ways to increase student and faculty awareness of the resources and services our branch libraries offer, because most students turn to the main library for their information needs. We created seven promotional videos in summer 2007 advertising branch libraries at DePauw University. Designed to reach students in their Web 2.0 environment, the commercials are posted on YouTube, the library website, individual librarian’s Facebook profiles and play on the campus cable station. This session will focus on the conception and production process, the outcomes of our project, and the challenges and lessons learned.

Convergence To Equilibrium In Experimental Markets, Carolyn A. Galantine Cpa., Phd, Charles W. Swenson Dec 2007

Convergence To Equilibrium In Experimental Markets, Carolyn A. Galantine Cpa., Phd, Charles W. Swenson

Carolyn A Galantine CPA., PhD

The process by which market prices achieve equilibrium is an important topic, as the price formation process is fundamental to applied economic theory. Recently, economists have been applying complex mathematical functions to study the course of market prices convergence to equilibrium. Studies have made progress in modeling the price convergence process in at least one type of experimental market setting, the double auction. The double auction is of interest not only because of its prevalence in many types of real-world markets (e.g., the New York Stock Exchange), but also because of its extensive use in experimental economics. The double auction …

Estate Acts, 1600 To 1830: A New Source For British History, Gary Richardson Dec 2007

Estate Acts, 1600 To 1830: A New Source For British History, Gary Richardson

Gary Richardson

A new database demonstrates that between 1600 and 1830, Parliament passed thousands of acts restructuring rights to real and equitable estates. These estate acts enabled individuals and families to sell, mortgage, lease, exchange, and improve land previously bound by landholding and inheritance laws. This essay provides a factual foundation for research on this important topic: the law and economics of property rights during the period preceding the Industrial Revolution. Tables present time-series, cross-sectional, and panel data that should serve as a foundation for empirical analysis. Preliminary analysis indicates ways in which this new evidence may shape our understanding of British …

Product Quality, Reputation, And Market Structure, James D. Dana, Yuk-Fai Fong Dec 2007

Product Quality, Reputation, And Market Structure, James D. Dana, Yuk-Fai Fong

James D Dana Jr

Firms in an oligopoly market can more easily maintain a reputation for a high quality experience good than a monopolist or firms in a competitive market. Intuitively, selling an experience good of unknown quality is like selling a primary good of known quality and a secondary upgrade of unknown quality. When a monopolist or a competitive firm deviates in the price or quality of its upgrade, they can anticipate that consumers will no longer buy the upgrade, but the profit they earn from their primary good is unchanged. On the other hand, when an oligopoly firm deviates in the price …

Jack Bauer: The Smart Warrior's Faustian Gift, Marcus O'Donnell Dec 2007

Jack Bauer: The Smart Warrior's Faustian Gift, Marcus O'Donnell

Marcus O'Donnell

Jack Bauer of the television series 24 is a highly charged contemporary mythic character who exists in powerful relationship to past and present real-world and fictional figures. If Rambo was a classic Reagan era cinematic ‘hard body’ (Jeffords, 1994), Jack is the archetypal Bush ‘smart warrior’ in a post-Patriot Act era. Like Rambo, Reagan’s displays of bravado were decisive and successfully staged; however, George Bush has faced a multiplying set of uncertainties. This sets up a more complex set of relations between Jack, George W. Bush and contemporary masculinities than those presented by the Reagan era. Jack is both an …

Islamic Banking And Finance: Moral Beliefs And Business Practices At Work, Karen Hunt Ahmed Dec 2007

Islamic Banking And Finance: Moral Beliefs And Business Practices At Work, Karen Hunt Ahmed

Karen Hunt Ahmed

The religion of Islam has existed for 1400 years but Islamic economic theory and its financial institutions emerged as an industry only in the 1970s. Islamic financial institutions (IFIs) are designed to help Muslims conduct business internationally while simultaneously upholding traditional Islamic values related to trade finance and currency movement. The basis for their existence is the Islamic moral prohibition on charging interest—interest is a central component of capitalist banking—yet IFIs conduct billions of dollars of business annually in the world economy and the de facto Islamic banking transaction is—in most cases—virtually identical to a capitalist banking transaction. Business practices …

Pedestrian Safety Is Not A Tort, Michael E. Lewyn Dec 2007

Pedestrian Safety Is Not A Tort, Michael E. Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

In recent decades, American state and local highway officials have built wide streets and roads designed primarily to accommodate high-speed automobile traffic. However, such high-speed streets are more dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists than streets with slower traffic, and thus fail to adequately accommodate nondrivers. Government officials design streets for high-speed traffic partially because of their fear of tort liability. An influential street engineering manual, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ “Green Book”, has generally favored the construction of such high-speed streets, and transportation planners fear that if they fail to follow the Green Book’s recommendations, they …

Illegal Dumping: Large And Small Scale Littering In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth D. Tunnell Dec 2007

Illegal Dumping: Large And Small Scale Littering In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth D. Tunnell

Kenneth Tunnell

Illegal dumping, a social problem greatly affecting some rural states, occurs at both the large and small scale as open dump sites and roadside trash. Focusing on Kentucky, a rural state without mandatory trash pickup and a per capita income below and a poverty rate above the national average, this photo essay describes the dumping and littering problem. As is shown, legislative and executive initiatives have made some inroads in large-scale clean up. Some local governments, however, appear apathetic about addressing illegal dumping in their own communities. Kentucky’s litter problem is showing few signs of improvement and roadside littering seemingly …

Police Job Stress In The Usa, Serdar Kenan Gul Dec 2007

Police Job Stress In The Usa, Serdar Kenan Gul

Serdar Kenan Gul

Considering the hardship and the danger of the tasks it involves, policing is one of the most stressful jobs compared to other professions. Police officers work under conditions that produce stress, which leaves only a limited time for families and social activities. This paper discusses police officers’ depression about their jobs and examines the stressors in policing. The dataset for this study was obtained from a survey conducted in the Baltimore Police Department, United States, titled: “Police Stress and Domestic Violence in Police Families.” The purpose of the study is to show the causes and effects of feeling negative/ depressed …

Exploring The Mental Health Of Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Louis F. Graham, Kisha Braithwaite, Pilgram Spikes, Charles F. Stephens, Ugo F. Edu

Louis F Graham

Current research indicates that black men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately burdened by depressive distress and anxiety disorders as compared to their white gay and heterosexual counterparts. This study utilizes focus groups to qualitatively explore issues surrounding the mental health status of this population in an attempt to shed light on potential influencing and determinant factors. Twenty-two self-identified black, or multiracial including black, MSM residing in Atlanta, Georgia participated in two focus groups—11 subjects each, respectively. Categories that emerged from data analysis include: knowledge/experiences, attitudes/beliefs, societal action/behavior, identity development, relationship functionality, and mental health status. Overarching themes …

Steering Tax On Children’S Tobacco Consumption, Michael Adams Dec 2007

Steering Tax On Children’S Tobacco Consumption, Michael Adams

Michael O Adams

Careers of smokers almost always start in infancy. Therefore, the tobacco industry is confronted with the economic necessity to turn children into addicted smokers. Present efforts to reduce the smoking rate of children remain without sufficient effect, because they miss to change this incentive. The solution is to tax cigarettes smoked by children. Adequately designed this steering tax causes the industry to prevent children from smoking instead of turning them into addicted smokers.

This study examines the role of trust in management as a mediator of the relationship between job related variables, managerial practice variables and commitment to change. The job related variables studied include feedback, job autonomy, employee participation and goal clarity. The managerial practice variables studied include procedural justice, perceived organizational support, transformational leadership, shared values, opportunistic behavior and communication. Data were gathered from 294 managerial staff in a selected service organization in Malaysia using self-administered questionnaires. The results of a structural equation modeling indicate that the relationships among the job related variables, managerial practice variables, and commitment to change were …

Kentucky Youth At Risk Transitions: A Report To The Commonwealth, Doris Pierce, Norman Powell, Amy Marshall, Ronnie Nolan, Elaine Fehringer Dec 2007

Kentucky Youth At Risk Transitions: A Report To The Commonwealth, Doris Pierce, Norman Powell, Amy Marshall, Ronnie Nolan, Elaine Fehringer

Norman W. Powell

In the Commonwealth of Kentucky, there are over 22,000 youth being educated in programs that are funded, operated or contracted by state agencies. These state agency children come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and bring a multiplicity of social, psychological, behavioral and educational problems that challenge teachers and staffs. These particular Kentucky students, more than any others, are at the greatest risk of not making successful transitions into adulthood. It is critical that all such young people be afforded the highest quality of transition planning and support so that they can become successful and productive adults.

This report is …
