La Organización Industrial Del Transporte Aéreo En Chile, Claudio A. Agostini Dec 2007

La Organización Industrial Del Transporte Aéreo En Chile, Claudio A. Agostini

Claudio A. Agostini

Over the last 20 years, demand for air passenger transport has grown dramatically. At the same time, the two largest domestic airlines merged and several smaller entrants exited without being able to make significant inroads. As a result, the industry is highly concentrated, with a dominant firm and a few fringe firms. This condition has generated considerable public debate about the degree of competition in the airline industry in Chile. With the purpose of contributing to the public discussion, this paper analyzes the industry from an industrial organization point of view. Specifically, the paper describes the domestic airline industry in …

Childhood Sexual Abuse In Black Men Who Have Sex With Men: Results From Three Qualitative Studies, Sheldon D. Fields, David J. Malebranche, Sonja Feist-Price

David J Malebranche

This report describes the high prevalence and context of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) among Black men who have sex with men (MSM) across 3 independent qualitative studies. Semistructured one-on-one interviews were conducted with 87 Black MSM across 3 cities (Rochester, NY, n=28; Lexington, KY/Atlanta, GA, n=30; and Atlanta, GA, n =29). A combined CSA prevalence of 32% (28/87) was found among the 3 samples, despite variation in geographic location, mean age, and sexual identification. Common themes emerging across the 3 samples included prolonged and repeated abuse by a close male relative; blaming of same-sex desire on CSA; and descriptions of …

Should Binge Eating Disorder Be Included In The Dsm-V? A Critical Review Of The State Of Evidence., Ruth Striegel Weissman

Ruth Striegel Weissman

ncreasing empirical evidence supports the validity of binge-eating disorder (BED) and its inclusion as a formal diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). Contention exists regarding the criteria for BED, including whether, like bulimia nervosa (BN), it should be characterized by overvaluation of shape/weight. This study examined the significance of overvaluation for BED using two complementary comparisons groups. Participants were 324 women who completed self-report instruments as part of an Internet study. Analyses compared BMI, eating disorder (ED) features, and depressive levels in four groups: 123 overweight participants without ED, 47 BED participants who do not …

Secrecy And Democratic Decisions, Mark A. Chinen Dec 2007

Secrecy And Democratic Decisions, Mark A. Chinen

Mark A. Chinen

Secrecy to protect intelligence sources and methods appears often in the nation’s discourse about controversial national security matters. Often it is asked whether such secrecy is consistent with the nation’s democratic principles and processes. I argue such principles and processes provide a framework through which we try to answer questions about secrecy and indeed legitimate them, but are often too broad to provide definitive guidance in specific cases. At the same time, the sources and methods argument itself is overbroad because of the nature of the sources and methods themselves; the tentative nature of intelligence assessments derived from those sources …

Understanding Service Quality And Relationship Quality In Is Outsourcing: Client Orientation & Promotion, Project Management Effectiveness, And The Task-Technology-Structure Fit, Subrata Chakrabarty, Dwayne Whitten, Kenneth W. Green

Subrata Chakrabarty

A national survey of firms that participated in outsourcing relationships was conducted, and service quality and relationship quality were found to be significantly and positively related to each other and both had a significant impact on user satisfaction. However, the intricacies of the causal effects between the two autonomous constructs, service quality and relationship quality, are a source of interest. In post-analysis theory building, we give a conceptual model that proposes that the positive causal effect of service quality on relationship quality would be positively moderated by the client orientation and promotion effectiveness of the vendor, while the positive causal …

What Are The Mechanisms Linking Financial Development And Economic Growth In Malaysia?, James B. Ang Dec 2007

What Are The Mechanisms Linking Financial Development And Economic Growth In Malaysia?, James B. Ang

James B Ang

This paper estimates a six-equation model of financial development and economic growth for Malaysia to shed light on the mechanisms linking these two variables. The results indicate that financial development leads to higher output growth via promoting both private saving and private investment. The findings also provide some support for the hypothesis of endogenous financial development and growth models that finance leads to higher growth through improved efficiency of investment. There is evidence that repressionist financial policies, such as interest rate controls, high reserve requirements and directed credit programs, have contributed positively to financial development. However, other direct government interventions …

Testing An Individual Systems Model Of Response Evaluation And Decision (Red) And Antisocial Behavior Across Adolescence, Reid G. Fontaine Dec 2007

Testing An Individual Systems Model Of Response Evaluation And Decision (Red) And Antisocial Behavior Across Adolescence, Reid G. Fontaine

Reid G. Fontaine

This study examined the bidirectional development of aggressive response evaluation and decision (RED) and antisocial behavior across five time points in adolescence. Participants (n5522) were asked to imagine themselves behaving aggressively while viewing videotaped ambiguous provocations and answered a set of RED questions following each aggressive retaliation (administered at Grades 8 and 11 [13 and 16 years, respectively]). Self- and mother reports of antisocial behavior were collected at Grades 7, 9/10, and 12 (12, 14/15, and 17 years, respectively). Using structural equation modeling, the study found a partial mediating effect at each hypothesized mediational path despite high stability of antisocial …

Excavating America’S Metaphor: Race, Diaspora, And Vindicationist Archaeologies, Paul Mullins Dec 2007

Excavating America’S Metaphor: Race, Diaspora, And Vindicationist Archaeologies, Paul Mullins

Paul Mullins

Over more than a century African diasporan scholars have defined identity in complex forms that aspire to resist racial essentialism yet stake consequential political claims to collective roots. Historical archaeology has painted a rich picture of the material details of African American life that also refutes black essentialism, but archaeologists have crafted many utterly fluid African diasporan identities that sometimes fail to examine the global connections, anti-racist citizen rights, and concrete cultural heritage long examined by diasporan scholars. An empirically and politically rigorous African diasporan archaeology would be significantly extended by diasporan scholarship’s vindicationist and reflective anti-racist perspectives. Such an …

Specific Knowledge And Performance Measurement, Michael Raith Dec 2007

Specific Knowledge And Performance Measurement, Michael Raith

Michael Raith

I examine optimal incentives and performance measurement in a model where an agent has specific knowledge (in the sense of Jensen and Meckling) about the consequences of his actions for the principal. Contracts can be based both on “input” measures related to the agent’s actions and an “output” measure related to the principal’s payoff. Whereas input-based pay minimizes income risk, only output-based pay encourages the agent to use his knowledge efficiently. In general, it is optimal to use both kinds of performance measures. The results help to explain some empirical puzzles and lead to several new predictions.

). Disordered Eating And Substance Use In High School Students: Results From The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, Ruth Striegel Weissman

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Objective: To examine the association between disordered eating (fasting, diet product use, and vomiting or laxative use) and use of 10 substances (cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, inhalants, heroin, methamphetamines, ecstasy, steroids, and hallucinogens) in a nationally representative adolescent sample. Method: Participants were 13,917 U.S. high-school students participating in the 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. Results: Disordered eating was significantly associated with the use of each substance. Using effect size estimates that take base rates into consideration, for female students, associations between substance use and disordered eating were weak for all but three forms of substance use: current smoking, binge …

Public And Private Expenditures On Health In The Presence Of Inequality And Endogenous Mortality: A Political Economy Perspective, Radhika Lahiri, Elizabeth W. Richardson Dec 2007

Public And Private Expenditures On Health In The Presence Of Inequality And Endogenous Mortality: A Political Economy Perspective, Radhika Lahiri, Elizabeth W. Richardson

Radhika Lahiri

In this paper we study an overlapping-generations model in which agents’ mortality risks, and consequently impatience, are endogenously determined by private and public investment in health care. The proportion of revenues allocated for public health care is also endogenous, determined as the outcome of a voting process. Higher substitutability between public and private health is associated with a “crowding-out” effect which leads to lower public expenditures on health care in the political equilibrium. This in turn impacts on mortality risks and impatience leading to a greater persistence in inequality and long run distributions of wealth that are bimodal.

Intimidating Competitors–Endogenous Vertical Integration And Downstream Investment In Succesive Oligopoly, Armin Schmutzler, Stefan Bühler Dec 2007

Intimidating Competitors–Endogenous Vertical Integration And Downstream Investment In Succesive Oligopoly, Armin Schmutzler, Stefan Bühler

Armin Schmutzler

This paper examines the interplay of endogenous vertical integration and cost-reducing downstream investment in successive oligopoly. Analyzing a linear Cournot model, we establish the following key results: (i) Vertical integration increases own investment and decreases competitor investment (intimidation effect). (ii) Asymmetric integration is a non-degenerate equilibrium outcome. (iii) Compared to a benchmark model without investment, complete vertical separation is a less likely outcome. We argue that these findings generalize beyond the linear Cournot model under reasonable assumptions.

Chapter 14: Native American Law, Wolfgang Fikentscher

Wolfgang Fikentscher

Inclusive online updates jan10. Chapter 14 is based on fieldwork among North American Pueblos and other Native American nations, the results of which have already been published elsewhere (Cooter & Fikentscher, cites in Chapter 1 I. 6. a., above). Therefore, Chapter 14 is short. It brings what has been included in the Readers of 1996 to 2000 (see the remarks in the Preface above), in an amended and revised form.
