Effacement And Metaphor: Searching For The Body In Educational Discourse, Keith Nainby, Deanna Fassett Oct 2008

Effacement And Metaphor: Searching For The Body In Educational Discourse, Keith Nainby, Deanna Fassett

Faculty Publications

This essay concerns the body’s positioning in discussions of teaching, specifically focusing on the authors’ efforts to trace discursive invocations of teachers’ bodies by students reflecting on the teaching vocation. The authors explore, through a series of intertwined autoethnographic narratives, the research process that led them through focus group data collection and analysis, to reflections on students’ metaphorical use of the “teacher’s body” in these focus groups, to (in light of feedback from anonymous reviewers) the role of the authors’ own teachers’ bodies in constituting this research and its implications.

National Days Past: Five Things To Read Or Look At Oct 2008

National Days Past: Five Things To Read Or Look At

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

To complement the last post on revolutionary anniversaries, here are some places to turn to get a sense of how October 1 has been marked in China between 1949 and 2007.

1) Let’s start with National Day 1950: for an idealized vision of the celebrations held that day, look at this poster.

2) For a fascinating discussion of past National Days that combines memories of personal experience and analytical moves rooted in the discipline of art history, see Wu Hung’s excellent Remaking Beijing.

3) For a look back at National Day 1984, when the 35th anniversary of the founding of …

Adapting Ranking Functions To User Preference, Keke Chen, Ya Zhang, Zhaohui Zheng, Hongyuan Zha, Gordon Sun

Learning to rank has become a popular method for web search ranking. Traditionally, expert-judged examples are the major training resource for machine learned web ranking, which is expensive to get for training a satisfactory ranking function. The demands for generating specific web search ranking functions tailored for different domains, such as ranking functions for different regions, have aggravated this problem. Recently, a few methods have been proposed to extract training examples from user clickthrough log. Due to the low cost of getting user preference data, it is attractive to combine these examples in training ranking functions. However, because of the …

An Ontology-Driven Semantic Mash-Up Of Gene And Biological Pathway Information: Application To The Domain Of Nicotine Dependence, Satya S. Sahoo, Olivier Bodenreider, Joni L. Rutter, Karen J. Skinner, Amit P. Sheth

Objectives: This paper illustrates how Semantic Web technologies (especially RDF, OWL, and SPARQL) can support information integration and make it easy to create semantic mashups (semantically integrated resources). In the context of understanding the genetic basis of nicotine dependence, we integrate gene and pathway information and show how three complex biological queries can be answered by the integrated knowledge base.

Methods: We use an ontology-driven approach to integrate two gene resources (Entrez Gene and HomoloGene) and three pathway resources (KEGG, Reactome and BioCyc), for five organisms, including humans. We created the Entrez Knowledge Model (EKoM), an information model in OWL …

Introduction To Ethanol: Salvation Or Damnation?, Joe Starita

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Student Media

For nine months, a team of UNL student journalists — six print and four broadcasting — went looking for the answers to these questions. The students read hundreds of pages of background material, interviewed scores of scientists, researchers, professors and energy experts by phone and e-mail, grilled a number of ethanol advocates in person, participated in an energy symposium at Stanford University, traveled to Berkeley, Chicago and Kansas City, and visited ethanol plants, rural communities and cattle country to try to get to the bottom of this elusive, complex issue. The results of their months-long research can be found in …

Supportive Housing: Implications For Its Efficacy As Intervention With Special Needs Low-Income African Americans, Carol S. Collard, Rufus Larkin Oct 2008

Supportive Housing: Implications For Its Efficacy As Intervention With Special Needs Low-Income African Americans, Carol S. Collard, Rufus Larkin

Faculty Articles

In this pilot study, the authors examine the efficacy of supportive housing, which combines affordable housing with social services, in helping low-income single mothers in substance abuse recovery with relapse prevention and acquiring life skills to improve their economic conditions. Study subjects were residents of Delowe Village Apartments, a supportive housing development in East Point, Georgia, who participated in Project GROW, an on-site program intended to help residents maintain sobriety and reduce their dependence on welfare. The authors hypothesize that the length of residency in supportive housing correlates to prolonged sobriety, improved functioning, and increased employment. Findings indicate a substantial …

Distributional Effects Of Programmatic Features Of Medicaid/Schip On Transitions From Private Insurance Coverage Among Us Low-Income Children: A Dynamic Approach, Adetokunbo B. Oluwole

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of Medicaid/SCHIP eligibility and programmatic features on transitions from private insurance coverage among samples of American low-income children using monthly data from the 2001 panel of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), a nationally representative data set. The estimation approach combines multilevel modeling and event history analysis, including a robust array of variables measuring programmatic features, individual child, family, and state attributes. Logistic regression results do not indicate an adverse effect of expanded Medicaid/SCHIP eligibility on private insurance coverage. Results also suggest that states which established stand-alone SCHIP …
