Location! Location! Location!: Reference Service In Non-Library Settings, Karen Liston, Rhonda Mcginnis, Nancy A. Wilmes
Library Scholarly Publications
The decline in the number of face-to-face reference transactions has implications that are of concern to librarians, as well as the faculty and students we serve. A strategy to address this is to take reference to locations that are “more convenient” for users – locations where they already work, study and gather.
Three reference librarians shared their experiences with offering services in non-library settings, such as a faculty office building, a computer lab in a classroom, a student lounge, and a departmental library room. The objectives and experiences of these librarians vary, as do their specialized subject disciplines. This presentation …

Wayne State University’s Office for Teaching and Learning (OTL) co-hosted an all-day symposium called Virtual Citizenship. This symposium was part of an ongoing, multi-faceted study of the intersection between information technologies and the practice of citizenship. The OTL, with the help of the New Media Consortium, was able to provide the resources and technical knowledge needed to produce this forum while showcasing new technologies. Prominent speakers presented their views and research live in the university’s auditorium and simultaneously via video streams into Second Life and the university’s web site. This article describes the procedures leading up to the broadcast and …
Description Logic Reasoning With Decision Diagrams: Compiling Shiq To Disjunctive Datalog, Sebastian Rudolph
Description Logic Reasoning With Decision Diagrams: Compiling Shiq To Disjunctive Datalog, Sebastian Rudolph
Kno.e.sis Publications
We propose a novel method for reasoning in the description logic SHIQ. After a satisfiability preserving transformation from SHIQ to the description logic ALCIb, the obtained ALCIb Tbox T is converted into an ordered binary decision diagram (OBDD) which represents a canonical model for T. This OBDD is turned into a disjunctive datalog program that can be used for Abox reasoning. The algorithm is worst-case optimal w.r.t. data complexity, and admits easy extensions with DL-safe rules and ground conjunctive queries.

A Communitarian Critique Of Dr. Phil: The Individualistic Ethos Of Self-Help Rhetoric, Eric K. Jones
A Communitarian Critique Of Dr. Phil: The Individualistic Ethos Of Self-Help Rhetoric, Eric K. Jones
Communications Faculty Scholarship
Communitarians have criticized liberals for being too focused on individual rights and responsibilities. But not many scholars have raised this criticism in the area of self-help rhetoric. To address this void, this essay formulates a communitarian critique of the rhetorical devices Dr. Phil uses to counsel guests on his television program. Many scholars have published insightful work on the communitarian/liberalism debate. This paper extends that debate by providing a moral critique of the rhetoric espoused in this popular form of self-help entertainment. Dr. Phil's persuasive appeals to his guests reveal how notions of individualism appear during the show's dialogue.

This is Old Dominion University's ninth annual State of the Region report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …

A Matter Of “Ba”: Knowledge Creation And Dissemination By Library Faculty At Grand Valley State University, Debbie Morrow
A Matter Of “Ba”: Knowledge Creation And Dissemination By Library Faculty At Grand Valley State University, Debbie Morrow
Scholarly Papers and Articles
What is “ba”? I am not a Japanese-speaker; I’m not deeply acquainted with Japanese culture. But in reading about ba and “learning organizations” and knowledge creation, it’s been very easy for me to discern seeds of ba at Grand Valley. In the effort underway for several years now to allow each discipline to define its own benchmarks and best practices, to develop its own specific guidelines for progress toward tenure and promotion, I see elements of ba. In support systems such as the Pew Faculty Teaching & Learning Center and its programs, I perceive ba. And most significantly, in the …

The article talks about the public library trustees appointed by local funding agencies of the library system in the U.S. The funding agencies in Henry County, Georgia are the Board of Commissioners and the Board of Education. Trustees have a library director who has an advanced degree in library science and who has participated in ongoing staff development activities to learn new tricks and trends. They also have fellow board members and a state library agency, which is the Georgia Public Library Service. Important factors to remember about the responsibilities of trustees are mentioned.

University And Public Libraries Receive Connecting To Collections
Georgia Library Quarterly
The article reports that 21 libraries, museums and archives in Georgia have been selected to receive the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Connecting to Collections Bookshelf. According to Dr. Anne-Imelda Radice, director of the IMLS in Washington, D.C., the bookshelf provides museums, libraries and archives essential instructions on how to rescue treasures of yesteryear that they hold in trust. The contents of the bookshelf were selected by a blue-ribbon panel of conservation experts. The bookshelf includes an essential set of books, online resources and a user's guide that can profoundly affect the ability of small libraries and museums …
