Toward Understanding International Students: A Study Conducted At Middle Tennessee State University, Jiannan Wang Oct 2008

Toward Understanding International Students: A Study Conducted At Middle Tennessee State University, Jiannan Wang

The Southeastern Librarian

The number of international students in American universities has increased over the years and has drawn great attention from librarians, library staff, and researchers. In order to serve this particular patron group more effectively, a number of studies have been conducted to understand their difficulties in using American library systems. In consequence, different approaches have been taken to try to help them. As each university or college may have its own library instruction system, and as the composition and features of international students at different universities may vary, it is difficult to apply available strategies without a thorough understanding of …

Adjusting Cutter Numbers For Composers At The University Of Southern Mississippi Libraries, Miao Jin, Erin Boyd Oct 2008

Adjusting Cutter Numbers For Composers At The University Of Southern Mississippi Libraries, Miao Jin, Erin Boyd

The Southeastern Librarian

In music cataloging, two primary methods are used for assigning Cutter numbers for composers. Some libraries maintain a list of composer Cutter numbers and then assign the same number to a composer in all music classes, i.e., Yale University’s Composer Cutter List at www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/music/cutter. Other libraries, including the Library of Congress, do not assign fixed Cutter numbers to individual composers, and are only consistent within single music classifications (Smiraglia 2008). There are advantages and disadvantages to the use of fixed Cutter numbers. Catalogers tend to memorize the numbers for major composers. This saves time as catalogers do not have to …

Regional Cooperation In Employment And Training Policy: A Matter Of Collective Action Or Intergovernmental Relations?, Susan G. Mason Oct 2008

Regional Cooperation In Employment And Training Policy: A Matter Of Collective Action Or Intergovernmental Relations?, Susan G. Mason

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article provides empirical evidence that factors derived from the collective action theories resonated with employment and training policy implementers as the most influential for achieving regional cooperation for community development. Findings indicate that having specific reasons and the opportunity to benefit from collaborating does more to advance cooperation than competing for scarce resources. Permitting Workforce Investment Boards self-governing authority and providing an opportunity for mutual gains are promising means for gaining substantive cooperation both within and across workforce investment areas in U.S. employment and training policy.

Samoa’S Tree Of Life: A Study Of The Roles Of Coconut Products In The Samoan Economy, Past And Present, Dale Hoff

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This focus of this paper is the role that coconut products have played in Samoa’s cash economy, past and present. This paper begins with a brief history of the use of coconut products in Samoa before independence. Next, the decline of the copra and copra oil industries in the 1980s and 1990s is highlighted, and several causes for this decline are explained. The current roles of coconut products such as copra oil, virgin coconut oil, whole coconuts sold locally, coconut cream, coconut shell handicrafts, and coconut wood are then analyzed. Specific attention is given to the potential role of copra …

Assessment And Refinement Of Real-Time Travel Time Algorithms For Use In Practice, Kristin A. Tufte, Sirisha Murthy Kothuri

TREC Final Reports

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has set a high priority on the use of existing dynamic message signs (DMS) to provide travel time estimates to the public. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) currently has three DMS in the Portland metropolitan area configured to display travel time information. In the near future, ODOT would like to make travel time estimates available on additional DMS, over the Internet on tripcheck.com and via 511. Travel time estimates are valuable to the traveling public; however, the estimates must be accurate to be useful. The FHWA indicates that 90% accuracy is ideal and suggests …

Do Off-Campus Students Still Use Document Delivery? : Current Trends, Michele D. Behr, Julie L. Hayward

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

The tremendous increase in the availability of full text electronic resources has been particularly beneficial to distance education students who do not have easy access to print collections. However Western Michigan University (WMU) has been experiencing a decrease in requests for traditional document delivery of print based materials. This article presents a case study of WMU document delivery services for the distance education community. A survey was also conducted of libraries serving distance education programs to determine whether other institutions are also experiencing a decrease in usage of document delivery. Survey results show a more universal trend toward decreasing requests …

At The Watershed: Preparing For Research Data Management And Stewardship At The University Of Minnesota Libraries, Leslie M. Delserone

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Like many research universities, the University of Minnesota (UMN), and its Libraries, attempts to understand the nature and intensity of data produced by its researchers, and address the management and stewardship of its institutional research output. The recent activities of the Libraries, in support of and in conjunction with campus-wide efforts, illustrate a set of approaches that show the Libraries to be at the watershed, integrated into and contributing leadership to the growing river of campus-wide exploration and planning of cyberinfrastructure needs. This brief article highlights the hiring of the “science librarian cohort,” the Libraries’ study concerning the needs and …

Web-Based Citation Management Compared To Endnote: Options For Medical Sciences, Melissa Gomis, Carole Gall, Frances A. Brahmi

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The authors of this article analyzed the differences in output when searching MEDLINE direct and MEDLINE via citation management software, EndNoteX1®, EndNoteWeb®, and RefWorks. Several searches were performed on Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed directly. These searches were compared against the same searches conducted in Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed using the search features in EndNote X1, EndNote Web, and RefWorks. Findings indicated that for in-depth research, users should search the databases directly rather than through the citation management software interface. The search results indicated it would be appropriate to search databases via citation management software for citation …

The Words You Brought Us: Digital Lexicon Of The Recognized American Indian Treaties [Article], Charles D. Bernholz, Brian Pytlik Zillig, Cokie G. Anderson

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Machine readable files of the complete corpus of recognized American Indian treaties, derived from Charles Kappler’s multi-volume Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties and a few additional sources, were obtained from the Oklahoma State University Library Electronic Publishing Center and converted for text analysis with TokenX, a web application developed at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Center for Digital Research in the Humanities. The analysis and visualization capabilities of TokenX reveal the diversity of the terms found in these 375 treaties, and the observed frequencies offer a prospect upon legal thought of the times and upon the vocabulary used to express the …

Designing For The Student: Users' Styles And Department Web Sites, Trevor Hall, Ryan Jensen, Daniel Mclean Oct 2008

Designing For The Student: Users' Styles And Department Web Sites, Trevor Hall, Ryan Jensen, Daniel Mclean

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Researchers have recognized that students rely on different learning styles and strategies to succeed, and the importance of recognizing different learning styles is well documented (e.g., Cassidy 2004; Vermunt 1994; Bransford et al. 1989; Kolb 1985). The same is true of how students use technological resources; it has become increasingly clear that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for all students. While a great deal has been written on these topics, the literature addressing such differences has focused primarily on course content (Fahy and Ally 2005; Lee et al. 2005; Ross and Lukow 2004; Baldwin and Sabry 2003; Brown, Bull, and …

Turkish – Eu Relations: Let’S Just Say, It’S Complicated, Cora Allie Treske Oct 2008

Turkish – Eu Relations: Let’S Just Say, It’S Complicated, Cora Allie Treske

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Turkey’s goal of being accepted by the West began with the “westernization” of its culture in the 1830’s under the Ottoman Empire’s sultanates. Turkey’s application to the EU is the newest aspect of Turkey’s westernization project, and its potential membership represents a complete acceptance of its modern, secular identity, both as a people and as a state. The decision of membership is not only important for Turkey’s evolution, but also the European Union’s. The identities of both are at stake; the evolution of each will depend greatly on the course taken by the other. This paper argues that it is …

Asymptotic Equivalence Of Probabilistic Serial And Random Priority Mechanisms, Yeon-Koo Che, Fuhito Kojima Oct 2008

Asymptotic Equivalence Of Probabilistic Serial And Random Priority Mechanisms, Yeon-Koo Che, Fuhito Kojima

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The random priority (random serial dictatorship) mechanism is a common method for assigning objects to individuals. The mechanism is easy to implement and strategy-proof. However this mechanism is inefficient, as the agents may be made all better off by another mechanism that increases their chances of obtaining more preferred objects. Such an inefficiency is eliminated by the recent mechanism called probabilistic serial, but this mechanism is not strategy-proof. Thus, which mechanism to employ in practical applications has been an open question. This paper shows that these mechanisms become equivalent when the market becomes large. More specifically, given a set of …

Assessing An Institution-Wide Information Fluency Program: Commitment, Plan, And Purposes, Penny Beile

EGS Content

University of Central Florida faculty and administrators recently endorsed a library-initiated proposal to integrate information fluency across the curriculum. The information fluency proposal was drafted in response to a university-wide call for proposals for a quality enhancement plan, which is a requirement for reaffirmation by the institution's regional accrediting body. After selecting information fluency as the winning proposal, university administrators, program and library faculty, and other support units collaborated to develop a comprehensive implementation and assessment plan. This article describes the role and purpose of a quality enhancement plan and the process by which information fluency was selected as a …
