Hierarchy And Social Inequality In The American Southwest, A.D. 800-1200, Stephen Plog, Carrie Heitman

Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico has been the focus of much recent archaeological research on Pueblo groups who lived during the 9th through 12th centuries in the American Southwest. Here, we examine variation in mortuary patterns in the canyon, focusing in particular on one mortuary crypt, to address questions of social differentiation and the chronology of important sociopolitical processes. Based on new radiocarbon dates as well as reanalysis of the stratigraphy and spatial distribution of materials in the mortuary crypt, we conclude that significant social differentiation began in Chaco ca. 150–200 y earlier than suggested by previous research. We …

Prescription Drug Abuse And Diversion: Results Of A Survey Of Physicians & Dentists, Center For Interventions, Treatment & Addictions Research
Unintentional Prescription Drug Poisoning Project
To identify the training needs of prescribers for prevention and intervention efforts to address the problem of Unintentional Prescription Drug Poisoning, a web-based survey was created and administered in September, 2010. The survey was publicized to the Dayton area health care providers (largely physicians and dentists) via postcards, Medical and Dental Societies, and list-serves. The survey contained 17 questions and took about 5 minutes to complete. A total of 130 people completed the on-line survey. As seen from the Figure 1, the majority of respondents were physicians, and about 70% were male. More than 80% reported prescribing opioids at …

Engagement Experiences Of Hispanic Generation 1.5 English Language Learners At A Massachusetts Community College, Jacqueline Peña
Engagement Experiences Of Hispanic Generation 1.5 English Language Learners At A Massachusetts Community College, Jacqueline Peña
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hispanic Generation 1.5 students are foreign-born, U.S. high school graduates who are socialized in the English dominant K-12 school system while still maintaining the native language and culture at home (Allison, 2006; Blumenthal, 2002; Harklau, Siegal, & Losey, 1999; Rumbault & Ima, 1988). When transitioning from high school to college, these students sometimes assess into ESL courses based on their English language abilities, and because of this ESL placement, Hispanic Generation 1.5 students might have different engagement experiences than their mainstream peers. Engagement is a critical factor in student success and long-term retention because students’ positive and negative engagement experiences …
Advertising And The Mortgage Crisis: A Content Analysis, Pamela Morris
Advertising And The Mortgage Crisis: A Content Analysis, Pamela Morris
School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works
How do advertising messages differ in 2006 when the economy was on its way up, as compared to in 2009, just after a recession had been declared? This research focuses on the differences in newspaper advertising sponsored by financial institutions, from banks to investment companies. A content analysis of over 550 financial ads finds differences, in the number of ads and the content of ads. Findings should be of interest to academics, practitioners, and policymakers.
Regime Completeness And Conflict: A Closer Look At Anocratic Political Systems, Matthew J. Schipani
Regime Completeness And Conflict: A Closer Look At Anocratic Political Systems, Matthew J. Schipani
Political Science Theses
Mixed regimes are often viewed as inherently less stable and more war prone than fully democratic or autocratic systems due to their low levels of institutionalization. I ask, are certain mixed regimes more or less war prone than other mixed regimes, based on the strength and orientation (more democratic or autocratic) of their political institutions? At ends with previous research, my findings suggest that institutionalization levels play little, if any role in the onset of interstate war.
Nous And On In Semi-Formal French: Pragmatic Uses Of Institutionality And Distancing, Deborah King
Nous And On In Semi-Formal French: Pragmatic Uses Of Institutionality And Distancing, Deborah King
UTA Working Papers in Linguistics
French linguists have long noted the substitution of the indefinite pronoun on for the 1st person plural pronoun nous, in both formal and informal situations. Studies of informal conversation have found this replacement to be nearly categorical (Laberge and Sankoff 1980; Coveney 2000). By contrast, this study found a much higher percentage of nous compared to on in interviews and speeches with political or business-related themes (roughly 60% nous to 40% on). The data suggest that many speakers use nous and on in pragmatically distinct ways: nous for institutionality, on for distancing. However, nous can underscore institutionality even in potentially …

Fayette County, Wv Case Study: A Look At The Movement Towards Energy And Water Efficiency, Davina Bird, Hodjat Ghadimi, Randall Jackson
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
The focal area for this study is Fayette County, West Virginia. Using a qualitative semi-structured interview process, information was gathered so as to present a clear overview of what both the private and public sector are doing with regard to energy and/or water efficiency within the county. Given the pervasive nature of the issue of efficiency, interviewees were encouraged to describe their agency or organizational efforts as it relates to what they thought “energy and/or water efficiency” entailed. On the basis of the twenty-one interviews conducted, the progress being undertaken by different entities was noted and divided under five themes …

"Your Life Is Waiting!": Symbolic Meanings In Direct-To-Consumer Antidepressant Advertising, Jean M. Grow, Jin Seong Park, Xiaoqi Han
Jean Grow
This semiotic analysis demonstrates how pharmaceutical companies strategically frame depression within the hotly contested terrain of direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising. The study tracks regulation of the pharmaceutical industry, relative to DTC advertising, including recent industry codes of conduct. Focusing on the antidepressant category, and its three major brands—Paxil (GlaxoSmithKline), Prozac (Eli Lilly), and Zoloft (Pfizer)—this comparative study analyzes 7 years of print advertising following deregulation in 1997. The authors glean themes from within the advertising texts, across the drug category and within individual-brand campaigns. The findings indicate that DTC advertising of antidepressants frames depression within the biochemical model of causation, privileges …

According to a new report (http://tinyurl.com/2g6ghps), if you are on the Web at all you’re not safe from hackers, phishers, and spammers (oh my!). The Norton Cybercrime Report: The Human Impact (http://cybercrime.newslinevine.com/) of 7,000 Web users tells us that 65% of all users globally, and 73% of U. S. users, have been hacked in some sort of cybercrime. Globally, the U. S. ranks very high but in this case we’re not first in line. China wins Number One with 83% of its users web-abused in some manner. These are figures to give one pause.

A Modern Twist On The Prison Industrial Complex, Isis Goldberg
The Modern American
The author discusses a new NPR article, “Prison Economics Help Drive Arizona Immigration Law,” that sheds light into the role that the private prison industry played in pushing forward Arizona´s controversial legislation, SB 1070. She relates this to the theory of prison-industrial complex postulated by Angela Davis, professor and former Black Panther member, and concludes that private corporations should not have influence or participate in drafting legislation because they do not have the public welfare at interest.

Frameworks For Systemic And Structural Analysis Of Financial Innovations In Infrastructure, Ali Mostafavi, Dulcy M. Abraham
Infrastructure System-of-Systems (I-SoS ) Research Group
Financial innovations have emerged globally to close the gap between the rising global demand for infrastructures and the availability of financing sources offered by traditional financing mechanisms such as fuel taxation, tax-exempt bonds, and federal and state funds. The key to sustainable innovative financing mechanisms is effective policymaking. This paper discusses the theoretical framework of a research study whose objective is to structurally and systemically assess financial innovations in global infrastructures. The research aims to create analysis frameworks, taxonomies and constructs, and simulation models pertaining to the dynamics of the innovation process to be used in policy analysis. Structural assessment …
