What Would You Call It? Developing A Specialized Taxonomy To Serve Multiple Audiences, Heather Martin, Megan Sarkisian Nov 2010

What Would You Call It? Developing A Specialized Taxonomy To Serve Multiple Audiences, Heather Martin, Megan Sarkisian

Heather J Martin, MISt, AHIP

The National Service-Learning Clearinghouse had a web and library taxonomy that was based loosely on the ERIC Thesaurus, developed organically, and somewhat haphazardly, over time.  We recognized multiple short-comings in both the taxonomy itself and the often inconsistent way in which it was applied to the collection as well as our website. After a needs assessment we decided to develop a new taxonomy as part of a larger content management project in order to provide greater ease of use and access to both internal and external users.

Loading Sfx Marc Records Into Aleph: The Iowa Experience, Wendy C. Robertson Nov 2010

Loading Sfx Marc Records Into Aleph: The Iowa Experience, Wendy C. Robertson

Wendy C Robertson

The University of Iowa is planning to load SFX MARC records to our catalog. We would like the serials records to be merged with print records, and we would like to be able to easily pull the information as our SFX configurations change. The poster session will identify the issues, our solutions, the work we needed to be able to accomplish the loads, and the benefits of the loads. Audience: Cataloging and systems people interested in batch loading serials records Version: 15.2 Educational outcome: Familiarity with the issues involved in the process.

“Dual Linkage:” Iowa’S Use Of The Itm Link, Wendy C. Robertson Nov 2010

“Dual Linkage:” Iowa’S Use Of The Itm Link, Wendy C. Robertson

Wendy C Robertson

The University of Iowa Libraries make extensive use of ALEPH’s ITM link, allowing one item to be linked to multiple titles, giving us the ability to show circulation information for analytics and “bound withs.” In the process of adding thousands of links, we have found some weaknesses and have devised solutions to deal with difficult situations.

Repository-Based Publishing By Libraries, Wendy C. Robertson Nov 2010

Repository-Based Publishing By Libraries, Wendy C. Robertson

Wendy C Robertson

The University of Iowa Libraries has a small e-publishing program as part of our repository and other digital collections. We host a variety of faculty produced scholarship, including videos and image collections, as well as more traditional textual materials. Our working paper and journal collections include a variety of titles, from strongly institutionally affiliated titles to society titles. Setting up this program has been a learning process for us, particularly since we had not previously been a journal publisher. We view e-publishing as part of our commitment to open access scholarship and see this as a way in which we …

Uses Of A Data Extraction From The Serials And Acquisitions Module, Janet Hulm, Wendy C. Robertson

Wendy C Robertson

The University of Iowa Libraries regularly runs a data extraction from the serials module. This session will focus on how we manipulate the data by moving it into a spreadsheet or database management program. The output can be used to develop specialized and routine reports. Audience: Anyone interested in using data extractions to create reports or anyone involved in serials acquisitions Version: 15.2 Educational outcome: To understand how raw data from ALEPH can be used to assist with daily tasks and to create and assist with special projects.

The Social Reality Of Depression: Dtc Advertising Of Antidepressants And Perceptions Of The Prevalence And Lifetime Risk Of Depression, Jin Seong Park, Jean M. Grow Nov 2010

The Social Reality Of Depression: Dtc Advertising Of Antidepressants And Perceptions Of The Prevalence And Lifetime Risk Of Depression, Jin Seong Park, Jean M. Grow

Jean Grow

This study is rooted in the research traditions of cultivation theory, construct accessibility, and availability heuristic. Based on a survey with 221 subjects, this study finds that familiarity with direct-to-consumer (DTC) print advertisements for antidepressant brands is associated with inflated perceptions of the prevalence and lifetime risk of depression. The study concludes that DTC advertising potentially has significant effects on perceptions of depression prevalence and risk. Interpersonal experiences with depression coupled with DTC advertising appear to significantly predict individuals' perceived lifetime risk of depression. The study ultimately demonstrates that DTC advertising may play a role in constructing social reality of …

When Bad Stress Goes Good: Increased Threat Reactivity Predicts Improved Category Learning Performance, Shawn W. Ell, Brandon Cosley, Shannon L. Mccoy Nov 2010

When Bad Stress Goes Good: Increased Threat Reactivity Predicts Improved Category Learning Performance, Shawn W. Ell, Brandon Cosley, Shannon L. Mccoy

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

The way in which we respond to everyday stressors can have a profound impact on cognitive functioning. Maladaptive stress responses in particular are generally associated with impaired cognitive performance. We argue, however, that the cognitive system mediating task performance is also a critical determinant of the stress-cognition relationship. Consistent with this prediction, we observed that stress reactivity consistent with a maladaptive, threat response differentially predicted performance on two categorization tasks. Increased threat reactivity predicted enhanced performance on an information-integration task (i.e., learning is thought to depend upon a procedural-based memory system), and a (nonsignificant) trend for impaired performance on a …

Preliminary Executive Summary: Aserl Interlibrary Loan Needs Assessment And Best Practices Survey, David P. Atkins

Other Library Publications and Works

A working group of ASERL librarians designed a survey to assess resource sharing issues and identify best practices. The results will assist ASERL in identifying programming and project areas to support resource sharing. The survey will also produce ILL and resource sharing benchmarks useful for future planning and assessment. The survey inquires into fundamental resource sharing outputs, networks, and technologies. To measure current best practices, the survey also incorporates Rethinking Resource Sharing "STARS" A Checklist Interlibrary Loan Assessment, devised by ALA/RUSA/STARS.

Gender And The Social Structure Of Collaboration, Kjersten Bunker Whittington Nov 2010

Gender And The Social Structure Of Collaboration, Kjersten Bunker Whittington

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Previous research demonstrates that individuals’ network positions in their surrounding social structure of relations influence the extent of their output and performance. The unique situation of minority groups complicates the relationship, however, as issues of status, legitimacy, and marginality influence the flow and interpretation of information and resources. While several scholars have addressed differences in male and female networks in the workplace, the association between macro-level work arrangements and the micro-level interaction mechanisms of minority groups is unclear. Greater insight into stratification processes can be gained by studying how organizational forms affect the way men’s and women’s networks are structured …

An Investigation Of The Strategies Used By Organizations Participating In The Welfare-To-Work Network Programs And Correlation Of The Strategies With The Retention Data To Determine Best Practices For Job Retention Among Former Welfare Recipients., Pauline J. Smith

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This ex post facto study (N = 209) examined the relationships between employer job strategies and job retention among organizations participating in Florida welfare-to-work network programs and associated the strategies with job retention data to determine best practices. An internet-based self-report survey battery was administered to a heterogeneous sampling of organizations participating in the Florida welfare-to-work network program. Hypotheses were tested through correlational and hierarchical regression analytic procedures. The partial correlation results linked each of the job retention strategies to job retention. Wages, benefits, training and supervision, communication, job growth, work/life balance, fairness and respect were all significantly related to …
