War In Pieces: Amia And The Triple Frontier In Argentine And American Discourse On Terrorism, Nathaniel Greenberg
War In Pieces: Amia And The Triple Frontier In Argentine And American Discourse On Terrorism, Nathaniel Greenberg

July 18, 2010 marked yet another anniversary of the still unsolved terrorist attack that shook Argentina some sixteen years ago. Prior to September 11, Argentina in fact suffered two deadly terrorist attacks. The second of these, the bombing of La Asociación Mutual Israeli-Argentina (AMIA) on July 18, 1994, was the single largest attack targeting Jews since WWII and the largest terrorist attack in Latin American history. While the group “Islamic Jihad [Organization]” described by the FBI as “a covername” used by Hizbollah, claimed responsibility for the bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires in 1992, explanations for the AMIA …

Honoring (Recollecting) Our Memory Of Peter Mchugh As Social Theorist, Kenneth Colburn, M. Moore

The recent death of Peter McHugh becomes an occasion for the remembrance and recollection of the distinctive form of reflexive or analytic social inquiry, which framed his work and that of his longtime friend and collaborator, Alan Blum. Following dual appointments at York University, Toronto, Canada in 1972, Blum and McHugh’s partnership formed the basis for a community of scholars and students throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. A brief review of McHugh and Blum’s works shows theoretical roots in social constructivism and a deep appreciation of the linguistic turn, which in turn lead to the development of a form …
Social Networks And Physician Adoption Of Electronic Health Records: Insights From An Empirical Study, Kai Zheng, Rema Padman, David Krackhart, Michael Johnson, Herbert Diamond
Social Networks And Physician Adoption Of Electronic Health Records: Insights From An Empirical Study, Kai Zheng, Rema Padman, David Krackhart, Michael Johnson, Herbert Diamond
Michael P. Johnson
Objective: To study how social interactions influence physician adoption of an electronic health records (EHR) system. Design: A social network survey was used to delineate the structure of social interactions among 40 residents and 15 attending physicians in an ambulatory primary care practice. Social network analysis was then applied to relate the interaction structures to individual physicians’ utilization rates of an EHR system. Measurements: The social network survey assessed three distinct types of interaction structures: professional network based on consultation on patient care-related matters; friendship network based on personal intimacy; and perceived influence network based on a person’s perception of …

The Benefit Transfer Challenges, Kevin Boyle, Nicolai Kuminoff, Christopher Parmeter, Jaren Pope
The Benefit Transfer Challenges, Kevin Boyle, Nicolai Kuminoff, Christopher Parmeter, Jaren Pope

Presidential Executive Order 12,866 requires federal agencies to design “cost-effective” regulations and to assess “costs and benefits” of these regulations on the basis of “the best reasonably obtainable scientific, technical, economic, and other information.” Benefit transfers are one economic approach used to estimate these benefits and costs, and the use of existing economic information to predict the effects of new policies is well established. However, advancing the practice of benefit transfers is crucial if economists are to play a role in developing federal policies. We review contributions to the benefit-transfer literature and present a unified conceptual framework to guide the …
Childhood Morbidity And Health In Early Adulthood: Life Course Linkages In A High Morbidity Context., Rachel Margolis
Childhood Morbidity And Health In Early Adulthood: Life Course Linkages In A High Morbidity Context., Rachel Margolis
Rachel Margolis
This paper examines whether morbidity in early or later childhood is associated with health later in life. I investigate the relationship between five types of childhood morbidity and risk factors for cardiovascular disease among Guatemalan adults who experienced high levels of morbidity in childhood. The analysis is based on the Human Capital Study (2002–2004), a recent follow-up of the INCAP Longitudinal Study conducted between 1969 and 1977. I find that most types of childhood morbidity are associated with poorer adult health, independent of family background, adult socioeconomic status, and health behaviors. Higher levels of infections in childhood were associated with …

Although a number of suicide risk assessment tools are available to clinicians, the high levels of suicide still evident in society suggest a clear need for new strategies in order to facilitate the prevention of suicidal behaviors. The present study examined the utilization of a new structured clinical interview called the Scale for Impact of Suicidality Management, Assessment and Planning of Care (SIS-MAP). SIS-MAP ratings were obtained from a group of incoming psychiatric patients over a 6-month period at Regional Mental Health Care, St. Thomas, Ontario. A canonical discriminant function analysis resulted in a total 74.0% of original grouped cases …
'Like A Prison!': Homeless Women's Narratives Of Surviving Shelter, Angela Moe, Sarah Deward
'Like A Prison!': Homeless Women's Narratives Of Surviving Shelter, Angela Moe, Sarah Deward
Angela M. Moe
Relying on field observation and twenty qualitative interviews with shelter residents, this article examines how the bureaucracy and institutionalization within a homeless shelter fits various tenets of Goffman's (1961) "total institution," particularly with regard to systematic deterioration of personhood and loss of autonomy. Women's experiences as shelter residents are then explored via a typology of survival strategies: submission, adaptation, and resistance. This research contributes to existing literature on gendered poverty by analyzing the nuanced ways in which institutionalization affects and complicates women's efforts to survive homelessness.

Estimation Of Hedonic Price Functions With Incomplete Information, Subal Kumbhakar, Christopher Parmeter
Estimation Of Hedonic Price Functions With Incomplete Information, Subal Kumbhakar, Christopher Parmeter
Christopher F. Parmeter
Existence of persistent price dispersion suggests that some buyers find lower prices through search and information acquisition, while some sellers charge higher prices by gathering information on potential buyers. If buyers are not fully informed of the lowest price available in the market they end up paying a price higher than if they had full information. Similarly, if sellers are not fully informed about the highest price they could charge, they too suffer by receiving a price lower than had they had full information. This paper develops a hedonic price model that incorporates the effects of incomplete information on both …

Testing Self-Efficacy As A Pathway That Supports Self Care Among Family Caregivers In A Psychoeducational Intervention, Marie Savundranayagam, M. Brintnall-Peterson
Testing Self-Efficacy As A Pathway That Supports Self Care Among Family Caregivers In A Psychoeducational Intervention, Marie Savundranayagam, M. Brintnall-Peterson
Marie Y Savundranayagam
This study investigated the extent to which a psychoeducational intervention supports family-centered care by influencing health risk and self-care behaviors of caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease (N = 325). Moreover, this study investigated the extent to which changes in self-efficacy explained changes in health risk and self-care behaviors. Data were analyzed using repeated measures and multivariate analysis of variance and multiple regression. Qualitative written accounts of the impact of the intervention augmented the quantitative findings. The study's findings revealed that family caregivers experienced reductions in health risk behaviors and improvements in exercise, stress management, and relaxation activities as a …
The Relation Of Aerobic Fitness To Neuroelectric Indices Of Cognitive And Motor Task Preparation, Jason Themanson, Keita Kamijo, Kevin O'Leary, Matthew Pontifex, Charles Hillman
The Relation Of Aerobic Fitness To Neuroelectric Indices Of Cognitive And Motor Task Preparation, Jason Themanson, Keita Kamijo, Kevin O'Leary, Matthew Pontifex, Charles Hillman
Jason R. Themanson, Ph.D
The relation of aerobic fitness to task preparation was examined in a sample of young adults separated into higher- and lower-fit groups according to their maximal oxygen consumption. Participants performed a modified Sternberg working memory task under speed and accuracy instructions while measures of task performance and contingent negative variation (CNV) were collected. Analyses revealed no significant fitness differences between groups on task performance measures. However, frontal CNVamplitude was significantly larger for lower-fit participants compared to higher-fit participants during the speed instructions, an effect not found for the accuracy instructions. These results suggest that lower-fit individuals may rely to a …

Trafficking In Bodily Perfection: Examining The Late‐Modern Steroid Marketplace And Its Criminalization, Peter Kraska, Charles Bussard, John Brent
Peter Kraska
Illicit steroid and human growth hormone use by professional athletes has received significant media and political attention in the last five years. The resulting political pressure has compelled federal law enforcement to prosecute serious new control initiatives. To date, no academic research inquiring into the nature of this illicit industry exists. This study fills this void through the mixed methods approach—employing both ethnographic field research and quantitative content analysis. The ethnographic data demonstrate a fascinating late‐modern trafficking scheme where the central informant established an apartment‐based manufacturing operation, converting raw steroid chemical compounds ordered off the Internet into injectable solutions. Content …

Consumption Smoothing And Hiv/Aids: The Case Of Two Communities In South Africa, Sebastian Linnemayr
Consumption Smoothing And Hiv/Aids: The Case Of Two Communities In South Africa, Sebastian Linnemayr
Sebastian Linnemayr
HIV/AIDS threatens to overstretch the already frail informal safety nets in countries heavily affected by the epidemic, potentially making it difficult for households with HIV‐positive members to keep up appropriate consumption levels when experiencing shocks. These households may, in addition, face exclusion from informal insurance networks because of widespread stigmatization. Surprisingly, the resilience of informal networks to HIV‐related shocks and their uncertain worth for afflicted households in particular have not been empirically tested to date. Using 3 years of a novel panel data set from two poor South African communities experiencing HIV‐related illnesses and deaths, we investigate the ability of …

Testing For Adverse Selection In Insurance Markets, Alma Cohen, Peter Siegelman
Testing For Adverse Selection In Insurance Markets, Alma Cohen, Peter Siegelman
Peter Siegelman
This paper reviews and evaluates the empirical literature on adverse selection in insurance markets. We focus on empirical work that seeks to test the basic coverage–risk prediction of adverse selection theory—that is, that policyholders who purchase more insurance coverage tend to be riskier. The analysis of this body of work, we argue, indicates that whether such a correlation exists varies across insurance markets and pools of insurance policies. We discuss various reasons why a coverage–risk correlation may not be found in some pools of insurance policies. The presence of a coverage-risk correlation can be explained either by moral hazard or …
A Multivariate Probit Analysis Of Willingness To Pay For Cave Conservation: A Case Study Of Yanchep National Park, Western Australia, Sorada Tapsuwan, Michael Burton, James Perriam
A Multivariate Probit Analysis Of Willingness To Pay For Cave Conservation: A Case Study Of Yanchep National Park, Western Australia, Sorada Tapsuwan, Michael Burton, James Perriam
Sorada Tapsuwan
This study employed the double-bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation technique along with factor analysis to estimate visitors’ willingness to pay (WTP) for the Yanchep Caves Recovery Project (YCRP). Two payment vehicles were used to elicit WTP, namely, park entry fee and cave entry fee. The main contribution of this paper is the joint estimation of the two payment vehicles using the multivariate probit model by allowing the error terms of the two models to be correlated. Emphasis was given to testing whether parameters of the two bid levels should be constrained and overcoming anchoring bias. The estimated median WTP for …
