Disaster Vulnerability And Evacuation Readiness: Coastal Mobile Home Residents In Florida, Margarethe Kusenbach, Jason Simms, Graham Tobin Dec 2009

Disaster Vulnerability And Evacuation Readiness: Coastal Mobile Home Residents In Florida, Margarethe Kusenbach, Jason Simms, Graham Tobin

Jason L Simms

This article examines disaster preparedness in a highly vulnerable population, mobile home park residents in hurricane-prone areas. The vulnerabilities of this population mandate evacuation as the only viable disaster response strategy, but this does not always happen. In order to explore evacuation decision making, interviews were conducted with 75 mobile home park residents in Ruskin, Florida. Descriptive results build on a conceptualization of physical, structural, socio-economic, and ‘‘residual’’ disaster vulner- ability; the latter is defined as a combination of experiences, perceptions, and preparations that inhibit the willingness and abilities of respondents to protect themselves. While residents generally prepared for disasters, …

Virtual Instruction: A Qualitative Research Laboratory Course, Lee Stadtlander, Martha Giles Dec 2009

Virtual Instruction: A Qualitative Research Laboratory Course, Lee Stadtlander, Martha Giles

Lee Stadtlander

Online graduate programs in psychology are becoming common; however, a concern has been whether instructors in the programs provide adequate research mentoring. One issue surrounding research mentoring is the absence of research laboratories in the virtual university. Students attending online universities often do research without peer or lab support and without previous experience in supervised research projects. This paper describes a virtual qualitative research lab course at an online university that both mentored students and collected data through a virtual qualitative lab on a national scale. The authors also address logistics, problems and issues that arose, as well as suggestions …

Milwaukee Public Library Special Collections Finder (Digital Collection), Rose Fortier

Rose Fortier

The Milwaukee Public Library has many special collections. These special collections exist both within MPL's various archives and as part of several reference departments housed at MPL's Central Library. The Milwaukee Public Library's archives consist of the City of Milwaukee Archives, the Great Lakes Marine Collection, the Historic Photo Archives, the Manuscript Collection, the Milwaukee Road Archives, MPL's Own Archives, and the Wisconsin Architectural Archive. In addition, many of Central Library's subject departments have special collections beyond those contained in these seven archives. Most, although not all, of these special collections contain local history resources. Some collections are of broader …

The Forest Transition: Towards A More Comprehensive Theoretical Framework, E. Barbier, J. Burgess, A. Grainger Dec 2009

The Forest Transition: Towards A More Comprehensive Theoretical Framework, E. Barbier, J. Burgess, A. Grainger

Edward B Barbier

Building on the contributions of Mather and others, this paper offers an approach for developing a more comprehensive theory of the forest transition. We argue that long-run changes in forest cover in a country or region cannot be separated from the overall pattern of land use changes. Moreover, this pattern is determined by relative land values; forest cover changes over time as the value of one land use relative to the value of it competing use changes over time. However, the actual values that are used to allocate land may be far from optimal: that is the presence of market, …

A Distributional Analysis Of Public Private Wage Differential In India, Mehtabul Azam, Nishith Prakash Dec 2009

A Distributional Analysis Of Public Private Wage Differential In India, Mehtabul Azam, Nishith Prakash

Nishith Prakash

We investigate the public-private wage differential in India using nationally representative micro data. While the existing literature focuses on average wage differential, we study the differences in the wage distributions. The raw wage differential between public and private sector is positive across the entire distribution for both genders irrespective of area of residence. A quantile regression based decomposition analysis reveals that the differences in observed characteristics (covariate effect) account for only a small part of the wage differential at lower quantiles, but a larger part at higher quantiles. At the very top of the distribution, covariate effects account for a …

Which Hedonic Models Can We Trust To Recover The Marginal Willingness To Pay For Environmental Amenities?, Nicolai Kuminoff, Christopher Parmeter, Jaren Pope Dec 2009

Which Hedonic Models Can We Trust To Recover The Marginal Willingness To Pay For Environmental Amenities?, Nicolai Kuminoff, Christopher Parmeter, Jaren Pope

Christopher F. Parmeter

The hedonic property value model is among our foremost tools for evaluating the economic consequences of policies that target the supply of local public goods, environmental services, and urban amenities. We design a theoretically consistent and empirically realistic Monte Carlo study of whether omitted variables seriously undermine the method’s ability to accurately identify economic values. Our results suggest that large gains in accuracy can be realized by moving from the standard linear specifications for the price function to a more flexible framework that uses a combination of spatial fixed effects, quasi-experimental identification, and temporal controls for housing market adjustment

Darwinian Controversies: An Historiographical Recounting, David Depew Dec 2009

Darwinian Controversies: An Historiographical Recounting, David Depew

David J Depew

This essay reviews key controversies in the history of the Darwinian research tradition: the Wilberforce-Huxley debate in 1860, early twentieth-century debates about the heritability of acquired characteristics and the consistency of Mendelian genetics with natural selection; the 1925 Scopes trial about teaching evolution; tensions about race, culture, and eugenics at the 1959 centenary celebration Darwin’s Origin of Species; adaptationism and its critics in the Sociobiology debate of 1970s and, more recently, Evolutionary Psychology; and current disputes about Intelligent Design. These controversies, I argue, are etched into public memory because they occur at the emotionally charged boundaries between public-political, technical-scientific, and …

Tort Law And Probabilistic Litigation: How To Apply Multipliers To Address The Problem Of Negative Value Suits, Ben Depoorter Dec 2009

Tort Law And Probabilistic Litigation: How To Apply Multipliers To Address The Problem Of Negative Value Suits, Ben Depoorter

Ben Depoorter

This Article advances a proposal that brings to life valuable lawsuits that litigation costs currently discourage. Our proposal converts claims with negative expected values into positive expected value claims by implementing a novel system involving flexible conditional multipliers. Our proposal has two components. First, under the proposed system a plaintiff is allowed to select a damage multiplier that determines the amount of damages the plaintiff will receive if the litigation is successful. Second, courts select cases for litigation randomly with a probability inverse to the multiplier the plaintiff selected.

Influencing Scientists’ Collaboration And Productivity Patterns Through New Institutions: University Research Centers And Scientific And Technical Human Capital, Branco Ponomariov, Craig Boardman

Craig Boardman

This paper analyzes the effect of university research centers on the productivity and collaboration patterns of university faculty. University research centers are an important subject for policy analysis insofar that they have become the predominant policy response to scientific and technical demands that have not been met by extant institutions, including academic departments, private firms, and government laboratories. Specifically, these centers aim to organize researchers from across the disciplines and sectors which, collectively as a research unit, possess the scientific and technical capacity relevant to scientific and technical goals of the sponsoring agencies. In this paper, we measure the productivity …

Group Diversity And Salience: A Natural Experiment From A Television Game Show, Gabriella Bucci, Rafael Tenorio Dec 2009

Group Diversity And Salience: A Natural Experiment From A Television Game Show, Gabriella Bucci, Rafael Tenorio

Gabriella A. Bucci

We take advantage of a naturally occurring experiment in a television game show to study the impact of group characteristics on their ability to select salient solutions in a matching game. The Family Feud features families seeking to earn prizes by matching the results of public opinion surveys on various subjects. Our main result is that, controlling for task difficulty, families that are more diverse, as measured by both the intra-family generational gap and the relatedness of their members, are more successful at matching wider ranges of survey responses. This highlights the importance of member diversity in expanding information and …

Preventing Unintended Pregnancies And Improving Contraceptive Use Among Young Adult Women In A Rural, Midwestern State: Health Promotion Implications, Michelle Campo, Natoshia Askelson Dec 2009

Preventing Unintended Pregnancies And Improving Contraceptive Use Among Young Adult Women In A Rural, Midwestern State: Health Promotion Implications, Michelle Campo, Natoshia Askelson

Michelle L. Campo

Despite high rates of unintended pregnancy among women aged 18 to 30 years, little research has been conducted to understand the factors associated with their contraceptive use. Eighteen focus groups were conducted with young adult women (N = 106) who were mostly white, non-Hispanic. Results suggested that contraceptive use was negatively affected by low contraceptive knowledge; use of alcohol; a lack of planning for sex; a misperception of the likelihood of pregnancy; forgetting to use contraceptives; and concerns about side effects, cost, and confidentiality. Women liked the peace of mind that using contraceptives gave them and the benefits of regular …

Culture And Co-Morbidity In East And West Berliners, Mary Fechner Dec 2009

Culture And Co-Morbidity In East And West Berliners, Mary Fechner

Mary Fechner

Following the collapse of socialism, fluctuations in cardiac mortality rates in East Germany and a West-to-East cardiac health gradient became topics of interest. Researchers suggested possible causes for these phenomena, including stress from postsocialism. I proposed that a cultural investigation of heart disease comorbid with depression could inform our understanding of the potential health effects of the postsocialist transition. I conducted ethnographic and survey research. In the study described here, I administered a depression scale (CES-D) and an ethnographically derived measure of cultural stress (Good Life Survey) to over 200 East and West Berliners with cardiovascular disease. Comparison of the …

Diversity And Its Discontents: Ambivalence In Neighborhood Policy And Racial Attitudes In The Obama Era, Meghan Burke Dec 2009

Diversity And Its Discontents: Ambivalence In Neighborhood Policy And Racial Attitudes In The Obama Era, Meghan Burke

Meghan A. Burke

This article examines the ways that members of three adjoining stably racially diverse urban communities conceptualize and engage diversity, and the ways in which their discourse and actions are cohesive with federal policies. Making use of interviews with 41 active residents in these communities, I argue that even in liberal, pro-Obama, racially diverse communities, a considerable amount of ambivalence exists in both thought and action connected to diversity, an ambivalence which is cohesive with Obama’s own federal policies that impact neighborhoods like these. The community members define diversity broadly beyond race, are ambivalent about its presence in their community, and …

Review Of Transportation Choice Researches In Australia: Implications For Sustainable Urban Transport Design, Sorada Tapsuwan, M.S. Iftekhar Dec 2009

Review Of Transportation Choice Researches In Australia: Implications For Sustainable Urban Transport Design, Sorada Tapsuwan, M.S. Iftekhar

Sorada Tapsuwan

In Australia, the transportation sector is the third largest contributor of CO2-e emissions. In order for Australia to meet the ratified target of 5% below 2000 emissions levels by 2020, a number of changes must be put in place. Sustainable transport design allows for more carbon-friendly travelling alternatives in urban and suburban areas where transportation activities mostly occur. In order for the design to be successfully accepted by the community, a good understanding of people's travel behaviour and preferences of transportation mode is required. This paper offers a review of current transportation research in the context of Australia that spans …
