Service Learning As A Vehicle For Promoting Student Political Efficacy, Dari Sylvester Dec 2009

Service Learning As A Vehicle For Promoting Student Political Efficacy, Dari Sylvester

Dari E. Sylvester

Research demonstrates young people’s underperformance in the political process (Colby, Beaumont, Ehrlich, & Corngold, 2007; Delli Carpini 2000). For young people, “What is missing is the belief that becoming involved in public life in any way that involves politics, government, or organized collective action…is likely to be effective or satisfying” (Delli Carpini 2000, 344). This lack of political efficacy—the belief that one can make a difference in political outcomes—figures prominently among traditional college-aged students.

An Analysis Of The Incidence Of Recruiter Irregularites, Paul Heaton Dec 2009

An Analysis Of The Incidence Of Recruiter Irregularites, Paul Heaton

Paul Heaton

We examine the prevalence and consequences of irregularities by military recruiters. Recruiter irregularities are uncommon — using the services' data for tracking allegations between 2007–2009, we document about 1 allegation per 1,000 applicants. Between 1 to 3 percent of the recruiter workforce is involved in substantiated allegations in a given year, with concealment or falsification representing the most common form of irregularity. Exploring Army contract data, we compare the characteristics of those signing contracts at the end of the recruiting month — when recruiters are under the greatest pressure to meet their monthly recruiting quotas — with those signed earlier …

The Polarized Presidency: Depth And Breadth Of Public Partisanship, Brian Newman, Emerson Siegle Dec 2009

The Polarized Presidency: Depth And Breadth Of Public Partisanship, Brian Newman, Emerson Siegle

Brian Newman

This essay examines the extent of partisan polarization in the public's views of the president from 1972 to 2008, extending earlier studies by placing the George W. Bush administration in historical context and exploring the depth and breadth of polarization. The authors find that the party gap in presidential approval has grown significantly over time. Moreover, more inpartisans strongly approve of the president and more outpartisans strongly disapprove. In addition, polarization has become broader as assessments of economic conditions, the president's handling of foreign relations, perceptions of the ideological difference between the president and citizens, and views of the president's …

Performance Appraisal System In The Turkish National Police: The Case Of Ankara Police Department, Serdar Gul, Osman Dolu, Cemil Dogutas

Serdar Kenan Gul

This study examines the performance appraisal system and particularly the problem of the ‘secret appraisal system’ in the Turkish National Police. Using a survey conducted at the Ankara Police Department in 2001, this study explores the raters’ and the ratees’ opinions about the existing performance appraisal system. Multivariate regression analyses show that district captains and lieutenants, in contrast to non‐ranking police officers, are less concerned about the secret appraisal system because these ranks are in the position of rating their subordinates. More educated officers and female officers are more likely to be concerned about the secret appraisal system because the …

From Communication Power Shift To Media Education Paradigm Change: The Case Of Hong Kong, Alice Lee Dec 2009

From Communication Power Shift To Media Education Paradigm Change: The Case Of Hong Kong, Alice Lee

Dr. LEE, Alice

The recent advancement of the new media, particularly Web 2.0, has profound social impact. It is arguably the greatest communication revolution in human history. In the past, only media professionals had the power to produce media content. Now with the help of the new media, young people familiar with advanced technologies can also share this power. For example, many of them are active users of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. As the rule of the game for social communication has changed, the power structure is overturned. Subsequently we have to ask the question: Are the young people well prepared to properly …

Factors Behind Hiv Testing Practices Among Canadian Aboriginal Peoples Living Off-Reserve, Treena Orchard, C. Mcinnes, K. Fernandes, M. Clement, M. Gilbert, V. Lima, J. Montaner, R. Hogg

Dr. Treena Orchard

The objective of this study was to examine factors associated with HIV testing among Aboriginal peoples in Canada who live off-reserve. Data were drawn for individuals aged 15–44 from the Aboriginal Peoples Survey (2001), which represents a weighed sample of 520,493 Aboriginal men and women living off-reserve. Bivariable analysis and logistic regression were used to identify factors associated with individuals who had received an HIV test within the past year. In adjusted multivariable analysis, female gender, younger age, unemployment, contact with a family doctor or traditional healer within the past year, and “good” or “fair/poor” self-rated health increased the odds …

Law In The Shadow Of Bargaining: The Feedback Effect Of Civil Settlements, Ben Depoorter Dec 2009

Law In The Shadow Of Bargaining: The Feedback Effect Of Civil Settlements, Ben Depoorter

Ben Depoorter

Lawmakers, courts, and legal scholars often express concern that settlement agreements withhold important information from the public. This Essay identifies, to the contrary, problematic issues involving the availability of information on non-representative settlements. The theoretical and empirical evidence presented in this Essay demonstrates that, despite the widespread use of nondisclosure agreements, information on settlements is distributed both inside and outside legal communities, reaching actors through various channels including the oral culture in legal communities, specialized reporters, professional interest organizations, and media coverage. Moreover, information on private settlement agreements circulates more widely if the agreed compensation in a given settlement exceeds …
