Income Taxes, Compensating Differentials, And Occupational Choice: How Taxes Distort The Wage-Amenity Decision (With Hui Shan), David Powell
Income Taxes, Compensating Differentials, And Occupational Choice: How Taxes Distort The Wage-Amenity Decision (With Hui Shan), David Powell
David Powell
The link between taxes and occupational choices is central for understanding the welfare impacts of income taxes. Just as taxes distort the labor-leisure decision, they may also distort the wage-amenity decision. Yet, there have been few studies on the full response along this margin. When tax rates increase, workers favor jobs with lower wages and more amenities. We introduce a two-step methodology which sues compensating differentials to characterize the tax elasticity of occupational choice. We estimate a significant compensated elasticity of 0.03, implying that a 10% increase in the net-of-tax rate causes workers to change to a 0.3% higher wage …
Sustainable Value Management: Leading Organizations For An Integrated Triple Bottom Line, Marco Tavanti
Sustainable Value Management: Leading Organizations For An Integrated Triple Bottom Line, Marco Tavanti
Marco Tavanti
An organization without an integrated bottom line approach is not designed to last. Value management is the organizational glue which makes it possible to integrate financial sustainability with social responsibility and environmental concerns. This paper suggests sustainable value management in the context of recent developments in corporate social responsibility, sustainability and the triple bottom line. The author argues that economic, social, and environmental sustainability needs to be integrated into value-centered management. Sustainable value creation with leaders and managers leads to sustainable growth for 21st century managerial practices aiming to benefit both shareholders and stakeholders.
An Empirical Evaluation Of Three Post Keynesian Models, Ben Zipperer, Peter Skott
An Empirical Evaluation Of Three Post Keynesian Models, Ben Zipperer, Peter Skott
Ben Zipperer
Structuralist and post Keynesian models differ in their assumptions about firms’ investment behavior and pricing/output decisions. This paper compares three benchmark models: Kaleckian, Robinsonian and Kaldorian. We analyze the implications of these models for the steady growth path and the cyclical properties of the economy, and evaluate the consistency of the theoretical predictions with empirical evidence for the US. Our regression results and the stylized cyclical pattern of key variables are consistent with the Kaldorian model. The Kaleckian investment function and the Robinsonian pricing behavior find no support in the data. JEL Categories: E12, E32, O41
The Multidimensional Structure Of Gottfredson And Hirschi's Concept Of Self-Control, Gang Lee
The Multidimensional Structure Of Gottfredson And Hirschi's Concept Of Self-Control, Gang Lee
Gang Lee
The purpose of this study is to determine the unidimensionality of Grasmick’s operationalization of Gottfredson and Hirschi’s criminality inducing the concept of low self-control. By applying confirmatory factor analysis procedures that incorporate advances in the application, the proposed six factor model and two alternative models were examined suggesting that Grasmick’s low self-control scale actually contains 6 distinguishable factors, not a single factor. The factors identified to be consistent with the six factor model were impulsivity, simple tasks, risk seeking, physical activities, self-centered, and temper.
Cyclical Patterns Of Employment, Utilization And Profitability, Ben Zipperer, Peter Skoot
Cyclical Patterns Of Employment, Utilization And Profitability, Ben Zipperer, Peter Skoot
Ben Zipperer
The interaction between income distribution, accumulation, employment and the utilization of capital is central to macroeconomic models in the `heterodox' tradition. This paper examines the stylized pattern of these variables using US data for the period after 1948. We look at the trends and cycles in individual time series and examine the bivariate cycical patterns among the variables. JEL Categories: E12, E32, O41
Economic Evaluation Of A Prerelease Substance Abuse Treatment Program For Repeat Criminal Offenders, Michael T. French, Hai Fang, Ralph Fretz
Economic Evaluation Of A Prerelease Substance Abuse Treatment Program For Repeat Criminal Offenders, Michael T. French, Hai Fang, Ralph Fretz
Michael T. French
Substance use disorders are common conditions among repeat criminal offenders. Without addressing these underlying substance use behaviors, parolees are significantly more likely to recidivate within 1 year of release. New Jersey is one of the first states to actively pursue substance abuse treatment options for inmates who are in the final stages of their sentences. Given the fiscal realities of taxpayer-supported programs, such initiatives must clearly demonstrate economic benefits for sustainability and growth. This article conducted one of the few comprehensive economic evaluations of prerelease substance abuse treatment to determine whether Community Education Centers' programs in New Jersey generated desirable …

José D. Villalobos
The White House Staff provides the bureaucratic framework that makes presidential leadership possible. Even though modern presidents continue to face constraints by the constitutional structure and political reality in successfully straddling the expectations gap that continues to enlarge, the staff presents the president with his best opportunity to anticipate and exploit leadership opportunities in the best case and manage crisis and cope with challenges in the worst. In recent decades, scholarly efforts to analyze the influence and importance of the White House staff has continued apace the institution’s own evolution. In this chapter, we evaluate the state of these efforts …

Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together: Librarians And Instructional Technologists On Resource Teams, Caroline L. Gilson, Donnie Sendelbach
Caroline L. Gilson
At DePauw University librarians and instructional technologists, including student interns working in Student Technology Support, will be collaboratively supporting First-year Seminars in the form of resources teams. A student tutor from the Speaking and Listening Center and a peer mentor round out these teams, which provide instructors and first-year students specific contacts to assist with library research, class discussion, technology projects, etc. While an opportunity for the Library and IT to collaborate, the resource teams will also enable these areas to provide crucial support at the very initial stages of a student’s college career by helping faculty attain their teaching …

Language In Society (Winter 2010 Syllabus), Adam Hodges
Adam Hodges
In this course, we will examine how language and society affect each other. We will place a significant focus on language use in our own society to explore regional and social differences in speech. We will examine the attitudes and ideologies people have about languages, language varieties, and their speakers (e.g. issues of prestige and stigma). We will explore how speakers use language to construct identities and interact with different audiences. And we will examine how language itself often becomes a political issue (e.g. in debates over language and education). The course will use a mixture of lectures, class discussions, …
Legal Interoperability In Support Of Spatially Enabling Society, Harlan J. Onsrud
Legal Interoperability In Support Of Spatially Enabling Society, Harlan J. Onsrud
Harlan J Onsrud
Spatial data is critically important for the wellbeing of society. Yet appropriate spatial data is often very difficult to find and, when found, the legal ability to use it is often in question. Lack of an operational web-wide capability allowing users to legally access and use the geospatial data of others without seeking permission on a case-by-case basis remains as an entrenched major impediment to general spatial enablement for all sectors in society. This chapter presents a legal inter-operability vision for offering, acquiring, and using spatial data and proposes an operational environment for gaining much greater legal clarity and efficiency …

Marijuana Use And High School Drop Out: The Influence Of Unobservables, Rosalie Liccardo Pacula
Rosalie Liccardo Pacula
In this study, we reconsider the relationship between heavy and persistent marijuana use and high school dropout status. Using a unique prospective panel study of over 4500 7th grade students from South Dakota who are followed through high school, we developed propensity score weights to adjust for baseline differences found to exist before marijuana initiation occurs for most students (7th grade). We then used weighted logistic regression that incorporates these propensity score weights to examine the extent to which time-varying factors, including substance use, also influence the likelihood of dropping out of school. We found a positive association between marijuana …

Challenges In Sustaining The Million Book Project, A Project Supported By The National Science Foundation, Gloriana St. Clair
Gloriana St. Clair
One of the main roles I have played as a director of the Universal Digital Library has been to write grant proposals to support our work. Both for this project and for another project—Olive.org, an archive of executable content—how to sustain the final product is the most difficult challenge. This paper discusses the various models that might be adopted to sustain a large corpus of digital material, such as that of the million book project. Methods discussed here include government funding, foundations and non profits, university homes, and joining existing projects. All individuals working with large digital projects should be …

Summer Engineering Experience For Girls (See): An Evolving Hands-On Role For The Engineering Librarian., G. Lynn Berard, Donna Beck, Bo Baker, Nancy George
G. Lynn Berard
The summer of 2009 marked the third year that the EQT Corporation sponsored a two-week Summer Engineering Experience for Girls (SEE) at Carnegie Mellon University. The program's goal is to provide junior high girls the opportunity to learn of the appeal of engineering as a career choice by demonstrating how engineering contributions make the world "a better place." The girls complete an application and attach a copy of their latest report card, a teacher recommendation form, and a one page essay explaining their interest in SEE. Twenty+ participants per year attend the July program free of charge. Librarians are invited …
Help-Negation And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Depression, Anxiety And Hopelessness., Coralie J. Wilson
Help-Negation And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Depression, Anxiety And Hopelessness., Coralie J. Wilson
Coralie J Wilson
Help-negation is expressed behaviorally by the refusal or avoidance of available help and cognitively by the inverse relationship between self-reported symptoms of psychological distress and help-seeking intentions. The current study is part of a larger multi-cite research program developed and led by the first author. It examines the association between suicidal ideation and intentions to seek help from friends, family and professional mental health sources in a sample of 302 Australian university students. Participants were 77.5% female and aged from 18-25 years old, with 85.4% aged 21 years or younger. Higher levels of suicidal ideation were related to lower help-seeking …

Newspaper Theft, Self-Preservation And The Dimensions Of Censorship, Erik Ugland, Jennifer Lambe
Erik Ugland
One of the most common yet understudied means of suppressing free expression on college and university campuses is the theft of freely-distributed student publications, particularly newspapers. This study examines news accounts of nearly 300 newspaper theft incidents at colleges and universities between 1995 and 2008 in order to identify the manifestations and consequences of this peculiar form of censorship, and to augment existing research on censorship and tolerance by looking not at what people say about free expression but at what they do when they have the power of censorship in their own hands. Among the key findings is that …

Alcohol Consumption And Body Weight, M T. French, E C. Norton, H Fang, J C. Maclean
Michael T. French
The number of Americans who are overweight or obese has reached epidemic proportions. Elevated weight is associated with health problems and increased medical expenditures. This paper analyzes Waves 1 and 2 of the National Epidemiological Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions to investigate the role of alcohol consumption in weight gain. Alcohol is not only an addictive substance but also a high-calorie beverage that can interfere with metabolic function and cognitive processes. Because men and women differ in the type and amount of alcohol they consume, in the biological effects they experience as a result of alcohol consumption, and in …

Gender Differences In The Correlates Of Volunteering And Charitable Giving, Christopher J. Einolf
Gender Differences In The Correlates Of Volunteering And Charitable Giving, Christopher J. Einolf
Christopher J Einolf
Psychological research has found that women score higher on most measures of the traits, motivations, and values that predict helping others, and women are more likely to help family and friends. However, sex differences in the institutional helping behaviors of volunteering and charitable giving are small. This paper seeks to explain this apparent contradiction with the hypotheses that men have more resources and more social capital than women, which compensates for their lower level of motivation. The paper tests these hypotheses using data from the 1995 Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) survey. The data show partial support for these …

Risk And Prices: The Role Of User Sanctions In Marijuana Markets, Rosalie Liccardo Pacula, Beau Kilmer, Michael Grossman, Frank Chaloupka
Risk And Prices: The Role Of User Sanctions In Marijuana Markets, Rosalie Liccardo Pacula, Beau Kilmer, Michael Grossman, Frank Chaloupka
Rosalie Liccardo Pacula
User sanctions influence the legal risk for consumers who engage in illegal drug markets. If a reduction in user sanctions leads to an increase in consumption, drug prices will rise unless supply is perfectly elastic. In equilibrium, a change in consumption associated with decreasing user sanctions could be relatively small if supply is upward sloping. Using a novel dataset with rich transaction-level information, this paper evaluates the impact of recent changes in user sanctions for marijuana on marijuana prices. The results suggest that lower legal risks for users are associated with higher marijuana prices in the short-run, which ceteris paribus, …

Public Values, Health Inequality, And Alternative Notions Of A “Fair” Response, Elizabeth Rigby, Erika Blacksher, Claire Espey
Elizabeth Rigby
The fact that disadvantaged people generally die younger and suffer more disease than those with more resources is gaining ground as a major policy concern in the United States. Yet, we know little about how public values inform public opinion regarding policy interventions to address these disparities. This paper presents findings from an exploratory study of the public’s values and priorities as they relate to social inequalities in health. Forty-three subjects were presented with a scenario depicting health inequalities by social class and were given the opportunity to alter the distribution of health outcomes. Participants’ responses fell into one of …
