An Analysis Of Desegregation Policy And Disparities In Faculty Salary And Workload At An Historically Black And Predominantly White Institutions In Maryland, Robert T. Palmer, Kimberly A. Griffin Dec 2009

An Analysis Of Desegregation Policy And Disparities In Faculty Salary And Workload At An Historically Black And Predominantly White Institutions In Maryland, Robert T. Palmer, Kimberly A. Griffin

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Although ambiguity exists regarding how states must respond to the mandates of Fordice to dismantle dual systems of education in previously segregated states, several scholars note Fordice should manifest itself in the enhancement of public Black colleges. Responding to Fordice, the state of Maryland entered into an agreement with the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) to make its Black colleges comparable with their White counterparts. While Maryland claims that it has satisfied its agreement with OCR, findings of this study challenge this assertion. Data from AAUP, University System of Maryland [USM], and the Morgan State Office of Institutional research show …

Victimization In Early Life And Mental Health In Adulthood: An Examination Of The Mediating And Moderating Influences Of Psychosocial Resources, Michael T. French, Terrence D. Hill, Lauren M. Kaplan, Robert J. Johnson Dec 2009

Victimization In Early Life And Mental Health In Adulthood: An Examination Of The Mediating And Moderating Influences Of Psychosocial Resources, Michael T. French, Terrence D. Hill, Lauren M. Kaplan, Robert J. Johnson

Michael T. French

Although numerous studies have documented the long-term effects of childhood victimization on mental health in adulthood, few have directly examined potential mediators and moderators of this association. Using data from the Welfare, Children, and Families project (1999)—a probability sample of 2,402 predominantly black and Hispanic low-income women with children living in Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio—we predict psychological distress in adulthood with measures of physical assault and sexual coercion before age 18. Building on previous research, we test the mediating and moderating influences of emotional support, instrumental support, and self-esteem. Although we observe no indirect effects of physical assault, the …

The Limits And Opportunities Of Networks: Municipalities And Canadian Climate Change Policy, Christopher D. Gore Dec 2009

The Limits And Opportunities Of Networks: Municipalities And Canadian Climate Change Policy, Christopher D. Gore

Christopher D Gore

Research on climate change policy and politics has become increasingly focused on the actions and influence of subnational governments. In North America, this attention has been particularly focused on why subnational governments have taken action in the absence of national leadership, what effect action might have on future national climate policy, and whether the collective action of networks of municipal governments are reshaping and challenging the character of national and global climate governance. This paper examines Canadian municipal climate in light of the absence of a comprehensive and effective climate national strategy. The paper considers various reasons why local governments …

Crisis Preparation, Media Use, And Information Seeking During Hurricane Ike: Lessons Learned For Emergency Communication, Jennifer A. Burke, Patric R. Spence, Kenneth Lachlan Dec 2009

Crisis Preparation, Media Use, And Information Seeking During Hurricane Ike: Lessons Learned For Emergency Communication, Jennifer A. Burke, Patric R. Spence, Kenneth Lachlan

Patric R. Spence

This study was a replication and extension of a previous work that examined crisis preparation, information-
seeking patterns, and media use in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. A quantitative survey study was undertaken to examine the same variables after Hurricane Ike. Surveys were collected from 691 Hurricane Ike evacuees. Respondents were more likely to have an evacuation plan or emergency kit than those displaced by Katrina, and older respondents were less likely than younger respondents to have an emergency kit in place. Women, African Americans, and older respondents indicated a greater desire for information, with African American respondents desiring information …

Age, Gender, And Information-Seeking Patterns Following An Urban Bridge Collapse, Patric R. Spence, Kenneth Lachlan, Lindsay D. Nelson, Ashleigh K. Shelton Dec 2009

Age, Gender, And Information-Seeking Patterns Following An Urban Bridge Collapse, Patric R. Spence, Kenneth Lachlan, Lindsay D. Nelson, Ashleigh K. Shelton

Patric R. Spence

Previous research suggests that mediated information seeking may be especially strong during crises
and other times of uncertainty, however, little is known about sex differences in both information seeking and
responses under these conditions. The current study explores these differences using data collected from
Minneapolis residents following the I-35W bridge collapse.

The Small N Methodological Challenges Of Analyzing Regional Integration, Gaspare M. Genna, Philippe Delombaerde Dec 2009

The Small N Methodological Challenges Of Analyzing Regional Integration, Gaspare M. Genna, Philippe Delombaerde

Gaspare M Genna

As the number of regional integration organizations increases, the attention to case selection in small-N qualitative analysis becomes more necessary in order to avoid selection biases that could produce results with doubtful generalizations. This paper addresses the problem of selecting cases and offers solutions to potential pitfalls in research. First we examine various research designs in qualitative methods and discuss the problems of selecting observations on the dependent variable. We next discuss the operational definition of regions. In order to select from a population of observations, it is important to understand what is and what is not included. Finally, a …

Desigualdad En El Ingreso Como Determinante Social De La Salud [Income Inequality As A Social Determinant Of Health], Fernando De Maio

Fernando De Maio

Immigration As Pathogenic: A Systematic Review Of The Health Of Immigrants To Canada, Fernando De Maio Dec 2009

Immigration As Pathogenic: A Systematic Review Of The Health Of Immigrants To Canada, Fernando De Maio

Fernando De Maio

This review investigates the health of immigrants to Canada by critically examining differences in health status between immigrants and the native-born population and by tracing how the health of immigrants changes after settling in the country. Fifty-one published empirical studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. The analysis focuses on four inter-related questions: (1) Which health conditions show transition effects and which do not? (2) Do health transitions vary by ethnicity/racialized identity? (3) How are health transitions influenced by socioeconomic status? and (4) How do compositional and contextual factors interact to affect the health of immigrants? Theoretical and methodological …

In Their Own Words: Sophomore College Men Describe Attitude And Behavior Changes Resulting From A Rape Prevention Program Two Years After Their Participation., John D. Foubert, Eric Godin, Jerry Tatum

John D. Foubert

The study conducted involved assessing students from a Southeastern public university during two academic years, after their participation in an all-male sexual assault peer education program. The study findings revealed that 79% of 184 college men reported attitude change, behavior change, or both. Furthermore, a multistage inductive analysis revealed that after seeing The Men’s Program, men intervened to prevent rapes from happening. Participants also modified their behavior to avoid committing sexual assault when they or a potential partner were under the influence of alcohol. Implications for future research were discussed.

The Issues Of Appraising “Meaningful” Participation And Quality Control In Threaded Discussion Board., Lee Luan Ng

Dr Ng Lee Luan

One of the most widely used interactive channels today is the electronic discussion board. This new medium is used as part of feedback-seeking channels. There are two unique characteristics, it does not require the physical presence of anyone and it does not require the simultaneous presence of anyone for feedback-seeking activities to occur. Educational practitioners have also begun to capitalize on these characteristics in their scheme of course assessment. In this study, the threaded electronic discussion board has been incorporated into part of the assessment activities for postgraduate courses. The study aims to investigate how this medium is utilized by …

Juridische Kaders In De Sociale Economie: Een Rechtseconomische Doorlichting, Astrid Coates, Wim Van Opstal Dec 2009

Juridische Kaders In De Sociale Economie: Een Rechtseconomische Doorlichting, Astrid Coates, Wim Van Opstal

Wim Van Opstal

‘Miss, Are You Bisexual?’ The (Re)Production Of Heteronormativity Within Schools And The Negotiation Of Lesbian, Gay And Bisexual Teachers’ Private And Professional Worlds, Emily M. Gray Dr

Dr Emily M Gray

This research offers an analysis of the experiences of twenty people who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) and who are teachers within their professional lives. It aims to illustrate the ways in which the continuing (re)production of heteronormative discursive practices impacts upon their lives both within the private and the professional realm. The research deploys a two-tier methodological framework in order to gain insights into the lives of LGBT teachers, an often invisible social group. The research is underpinned by a theoretical framework which draws upon poststructuralist feminist/queer theories but which also is data, rather than theory, driven. …

Civil Society’S Role In Peace-Building: Relevance Of The Cypriot Case, Direnc Kanol Dec 2009

Civil Society’S Role In Peace-Building: Relevance Of The Cypriot Case, Direnc Kanol

Direnç Kanol

This article argues that the rationale of the current conflict resolution strategy for resolving the Cyprus problem is problematic. Time and energy should be spent more on peace-building efforts that penetrate into ideas and identities of the Cypriots, than on negotiations that take place between the leaders. Greek and Turkish Cypriots should have a sense of ‘we’ based on equality rather than recognizing each other as the ‘enemy’ in case a durable solution to the problem can be found. In spite of the current political rhetoric which is very negative, civil society can be a crucial actor in reversing this …

Luis FLORES

Transparent obsidian artifacts have been reported for the northern Lake Titicaca Basin. Based on instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) of these artifacts a distinct chemical group was identified. Yet, the location of the source of transparent obsidian in the southern Andes remained unreported in the archaeological literature. This paper reports on the chemical composition and geographic location of a source of transparent obsidian from the Macusani region of Peru. Through the use of INAA and portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) we demonstrate that Macusani obsidian or macusanite comprises (at least) two chemical groups. One of these groups was used for making …

Hegemonía En La Era Del Conocimiento: Competencia Global En La Educación Superior Y La Investigación Científica, Simon Marginson, Imanol Ordorika, Martin Carnoy

Imanol Ordorika
