You Can’T Be Nonviolent Without Violence: The Rainbow Family’S Nonkilling Nomadic Utopia And Its Survival Of Persistent State Violence, Michael I. Niman Ph.D. Dec 2009

You Can’T Be Nonviolent Without Violence: The Rainbow Family’S Nonkilling Nomadic Utopia And Its Survival Of Persistent State Violence, Michael I. Niman Ph.D.

Michael I Niman Ph.D.

Since 1972, the Rainbow Family of Living Light, a nonhierarchical nomadic community, has been holding large temporary gatherings in remote forests around the world to pray for world peace and to create a model of a functioning utopian society. Wherever and whenever they gather, the temporary Rainbow city remains essentially unchanged, modeling what anarchist theorist Hakim Bey calls the Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ). Revolutions, Bey writes, seek permanent change and, in doing so, lead to violence and martyrdom. Revolutionaries aim to hold territory. The TAZ, by contrast, does not directly engage the state, but instead “liberates an area (of land, …

The Political Tsunami: Not All Death And Destruction Is Natural, Michael I. Niman Ph.D.

Michael I Niman Ph.D.

Unlike many disasters that befall the Third and Fourth Worlds, the 2004 Tsunami was both large and unique enough to dominate the western press. The stories in the mainstream media, however, were rather simplistic, sticking to a feel good script of nations uniting to offer aid to the tidal wave’s unfortunate victims. Meanwhile, without much media attention, the Indonesian government used the cover of the Tsunami and the ensuing relief efforts, to intensify its war against rebels in its break-away Ache province – which suffered from the brunt of the Tsunami. Also ignored by the western mass media, was the …

Sensory Gardens: Assessing Their Design And Use, Hazreena Hussein

Hazreena Hussein

This article investigates the design and use of sensory gardens by evaluating their zones and how they are utilized. Preliminary site studies were undertaken in 14 sensory gardens around the UK, followed by more detailed data collection at two case-study sites. The aim was to discover features that enable user behaviours and use of spaces in sensory gardens. The data collection included interview, observation and behaviour mapping, which is used in conjunction with affordance theory. The findings from the data analysis also draw on Moore and Cosco’s multi-method approach.

XXI

Direito, Utopia E Insularidade, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Virtude Da Constituição E Virtudes Republicanas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2009

Virtude Da Constituição E Virtudes Republicanas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Instituições, Trabalho E Pessoas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Industria E Innovazione, Il Ritorno Delle Politiche, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

Innovation And Employment: A Reinvestigation Using Revised Pavitt Classes, Mario Pianta, Francesco Bogliacino

Mario Pianta

The relationship between innovation and employment is addressed in this article through a model and empirical test at industry level for eight European countries in 1994–2004. We investigate this relationship for manufacturing and services and propose a Revised Pavitt taxonomy (covering both of them) in order to identify specific patterns of technological change and job creation and loss. The contrasting effects of strategies of technological or cost competitiveness are investigated using innovation variables from CIS2 and CIS3. Together with demand, wages and industry dynamics, they account for changes in employees and hours worked. The diversity in these relations across industries …

Le Politiche Industriali Del Xxi Secolo, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

The Determinants Of Health Care Expenditure In Australia, James B. Ang Dec 2009

The Determinants Of Health Care Expenditure In Australia, James B. Ang

James B Ang

The objective of this article is to examine the long-run relationship and short-run dynamics of the health care expenditure in Australia during the period 1960-2003. Consistent with the conventional findings, the income elasticity for health care is found to be greater than one, suggesting that health care is a luxury good in Australia. Demographic structure is found to exert a significant positive impact on health care expenditure. An increase in the accessibility to health care services is associated with higher per capita real health care expenditure. Finally, public funding of health care appears to have a contributory effect on the …

Rethinking Bibliographic Control In The Web Environment, Karen S. Calhoun

Karen S Calhoun

Cataloging and metadata services have reached a crossroads. The digital age presents fundamental challenges to building and describing collections of interest to the communities that libraries serve. Since the advent of the Web, what has been fundamental to libraries and higher education, what has constituted professional wisdom and best practice-all have been disrupted by new conditions. This article describes the environment in which libraries are operating and identifies the key trends driving change in metadata creation and management. It also outlines the characteristics of a next-generation metadata creation and management platform for libraries, which the OCLC cooperative is planning, to …

Predicting Methamphetamine And Other Drug Offending: Evidence From A Rural County Drug Court, Jospeter M. Mbuba, Barry W. Hancock Dec 2009

Predicting Methamphetamine And Other Drug Offending: Evidence From A Rural County Drug Court, Jospeter M. Mbuba, Barry W. Hancock

Prof. Jospeter M. Mbuba

Arrests resulting from drug-related offending from January through December 2007 were compared between an urban and a rural county, both in the Midwest. Marijuana and methamphetamine were found to explain significantly more drug-related arrests in both counties with methamphetamine accounting for a significantly higher percentage of rural than urban drug arrests after controlling for the differences in total population sizes of the two counties (X2 = 10.26, 2 df, p < .01). A descriptive parsimonious socio-economic and demographic profile was established for the typical methamphetamine/ rural drug offenders.

Connection As A Form Of Resisting Control: Mobile Phone Usage Of Foreign Domestic Workers In Singapore, Trisha Tsui-Chuan Lin, Shirley Hsiao-Li Sun

Shirley SUN

Mobile phones emerge as a new vehicle for resistance against employers’ control and social isolation, as well as maintaining distant relationships and local social networks. Through a survey and interviews with 68 female foreign domestic workers (FDWs) in Singapore, this study further investigates FDWs’ mobile phone usage for professional and personal communication with employers, family overseas and local friends. The findings show that FDWs have distinctive patterns for professional and personal use, including topics, time, and length of communication. They tend to use mobile phones more for connecting with family and friends than communicating with employers. Text messaging is the …

Emergence And Persistence Of Inefficient States, Daron Acemoglu, Davide Ticchi, Andrea Vindigni Dec 2009

Emergence And Persistence Of Inefficient States, Daron Acemoglu, Davide Ticchi, Andrea Vindigni

Andrea Vindigni

We present a theory of the emergence and persistence of inefficient states based on patronage politics. The society consists of rich and poor individuals. The rich are initially in power, but expect to transition to democracy, which will choose redistributive policies. Taxation requires the employment of bureaucrats. By choosing an inefficient state structure, the rich may use patronage and capture democratic politics, so reducing the amount of redistribution in democracy. Moreover, the inefficient state creates its own constituency and tends to persist over time. Intuitively, an inefficient state structure creates more rents for bureaucrats than would an efficient one. When …

Economic Evaluation Of A Pre-Release Substance Abuse Treatment Program For Repeat Criminal Offenders, Michael T. French, Hai Fang, Ralph Fretz Dec 2009

Economic Evaluation Of A Pre-Release Substance Abuse Treatment Program For Repeat Criminal Offenders, Michael T. French, Hai Fang, Ralph Fretz

Michael T. French

Substance use disorders are common conditions among repeat criminal offenders. Without addressing these underlying substance use behaviors, parolees are significantly more likely to recidivate within 1 year of release. New Jersey is one of the first states to actively pursue substance abuse treatment options for inmates who are in the final stages of their sentences. Given the fiscal realities of taxpayer-supported programs, such initiatives must clearly demonstrate economic benefits for sustainability and growth. This article conducted one of the few comprehensive economic evaluations of prerelease substance abuse treatment to determine whether Community Education Centers' programs in New Jersey generated desirable …
