Using An Intelligent Tutor And Math Fluency Training To Improve Math Performance, Ivon Arroyo, James Royer,, Beverly Woolf, Dec 2010

Using An Intelligent Tutor And Math Fluency Training To Improve Math Performance, Ivon Arroyo, James Royer,, Beverly Woolf,

Ivon Arroyo

This article integrates research in intelligent tutors with psychology studies of memory and math fluency (the speed to retrieve or calculate answers to basic math operations). It describes the impact of computer software designed to improve either strategic behavior or math fluency. Both competencies are key to improved performance and both address working memory limitations as students solve math problems. This research evaluated software interventions to improve strategies and fluency and tested their relative magnitude on math post-tutor performance. We discovered that both interventions appear to complement one another, impacting math achievement. Results suggest that training both strategy and fluency …

Unlearning Rules And Embracing Creativity: Using Prezi To Rethink Powerpoint, Shawn Apostel Dec 2010

Unlearning Rules And Embracing Creativity: Using Prezi To Rethink Powerpoint, Shawn Apostel

Shawn Apostel

As instructors, we should encourage our students to think rhetorically about visual presentation aids instead of relying on simple, prescriptive rules of design. Prezi provides us with a unique opportunity to rethink the way we use PowerPoint.

A Declaration Of Survey Interdependence, Tammy Sugarman, Jennifer Jones Dec 2010

A Declaration Of Survey Interdependence, Tammy Sugarman, Jennifer Jones

Jennifer L. Jones

Georgia State University Library administered LibQUAL+®, the library service quality survey, in 2003, 2005, and 2007. In 2009 when it was time to make decisions about another administration of LibQUAL+®, opinions were mixed. Some administrators liked the longitudinal data our previous iterations provided, and the comments always are quite valuable. On the other hand, the response rate drops each year, even with the introduction of incentives in 2007. Additionally, while LibQUAL+® provides useful information, it is not always specific to reports required by the university, such as the library’s institutional effectiveness report. The library decided on a two-fold approach. We …

Making My Narrative Mine: Unconventional Articulations Of A Female Soldier, Manda Hicks Dec 2010

Making My Narrative Mine: Unconventional Articulations Of A Female Soldier, Manda Hicks

Manda V. Hicks

I use fragments from my own military service to build a narrative of the self and weave this perspective together with the experiences of other female soldiers in prose poetry. This text addresses the complexity of the interview process and demonstrates that a full articulation of experience may include unconventional moments of sense making. These unconventional articulations generally lack a beginning, middle, and end, resist attempts at simple summary, and often elevate the narrative to an abstract level. I argue that articulations of experience are potentially contrary and intraoppositional and that they should be free of any impositions of order …

Where Does The Critique Of Consumer-Based Economic Governance Stand Today?, John Haskell, Luigi Russi Dec 2010

Where Does The Critique Of Consumer-Based Economic Governance Stand Today?, John Haskell, Luigi Russi

Luigi Russi

This paper addresses the increasing importance of the ‘consumer society’ paradigm in the shaping of economic policy and legislation, explores its foundational ideas and disputes, and introduces seven critiques that have surfaced with new currency among scholars and civil society in the wake of the ongoing financial crisis. The developments and critiques surrounding the consumer-based model of governance intimate a much broader story of shifting economic thought and socio-political contestation around the globe. This paper seeks both to capture the larger story and harness its complexity to a specific set of dynamics by using the European Union as a case …

Media Pranks: A Three-Act Essay, Kembrew Mcleod Dec 2010

Media Pranks: A Three-Act Essay, Kembrew Mcleod

Kembrew McLeod

Times are tough for public universities. Over the past quarter-century, state legislatures have slashed college budgets, and these cuts have only accelerated during a seemingly endless economic meltdown. We have been told to do more with less, make sacrifices, and be self-sufficient—and I couldn’t agree more. Unlike those socialists lining up to mainline milk from the nanny state, many of us favor fiscally sound solutions. We should teach our children well by following dogmatically free-market principles that reject government meddling. My modest proposal is multipronged and forward-thinking. It would hand over all aspects of academic life to private companies, creating …

Bayesian Model Averaging In R, Shahram Amini, Christopher Parmeter Dec 2010

Bayesian Model Averaging In R, Shahram Amini, Christopher Parmeter

Christopher F. Parmeter

Bayesian model averaging has increasingly witnessed applications across an array of empirical contexts. However, the dearth of available statistical software which allows one to engage in a model averaging exercise is limited. It is common for consumers of these methods to develop their own code, which has obvious appeal. However, canned statistical software can ameliorate one’s own analysis if they are not intimately familiar with the nuances of computer coding. Moreover, many researchers would prefer user ready software to mitigate the inevitable time costs that arise when hard coding an econometric estimator. To that end, this paper describes the relative …

Online Learning For Older Adults: Dealing With Internet Visual Literacy Skills, Beth Rubin Dec 2010

Online Learning For Older Adults: Dealing With Internet Visual Literacy Skills, Beth Rubin

Beth Rubin

This chapter describes key aspects of designing online courses for older adults who may have lower levels of internet visual literacy than younger learners, as described in existing literature. It describes a case in which such design was implemented and training offered, but was insufficient to support older learners. It recommends specific instructional actions, above and beyond those recommended in the literature, to support online course success.
