Rural Adolescents’ Help Seeking Intentions For Emotional Problems: The Influence Of Perceived Benefits And Stoicism., Coralie Wilson Dec 2010

Rural Adolescents’ Help Seeking Intentions For Emotional Problems: The Influence Of Perceived Benefits And Stoicism., Coralie Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

This paper is the second from a larger multi-cite study developed and led by the third author which explores factors that influence adolescents' help-seeking intentions. Specifically, this paper investigates the extent to which perceived benefits of help seeking, stoicism, gender and symptoms of psychological distress are associated with intentions to seek professional help for emotional problems. A cross sectional self-report questionnaire was administered to adolescents recruited from seven high schools in rural towns in the Riverina region of New South Wales. A total of 778 adolescents were recruited. The sample included 373 male and 404 female participants between 13 and …

Demography, Environment And Conflict In West Africa, Emmanuel Aning, Andrews Atta-Asamoah Dec 2010

Demography, Environment And Conflict In West Africa, Emmanuel Aning, Andrews Atta-Asamoah

Emmanuel Kwesi Aning

In this paper, we argue that West Africa’s conflict experiences since 1990 have never been devoid of the concurrent influence of the youth bulge problematic and the effects of the economic downturns of countries in the sub-region. These factors can therefore not be relegated to the background in present and future attempts to achieve peace. We also argue that the outbreak of conflicts has had grave ramifications on the region’s environmental security. This paper starts with a section that analyses the nexus between demography and conflict from which evidence is deduced to explain the youth bulge phenomenon and supporting destabilising …

The U.S. Practice Of Collateral Damage Estimation And Mitigation, Greg Mcneal Dec 2010

The U.S. Practice Of Collateral Damage Estimation And Mitigation, Greg Mcneal

Greg McNeal

This paper explains how the U.S. military estimates and mitigates the impact of conventional weapons on collateral persons and objects in most military operations involving air-to-surface weapons and artillery. It is the descriptive part of a larger work discussing the normative implications of U.S. targeting practices. In recent years, an entire body of academic literature and policy commentary has been based on an incomplete understanding of how the U.S. conducts military operations. The literature is incomplete because U.S. practices are shrouded in secrecy and largely inaccessible. As a result commentators have lacked a descriptive foundation to analyze and critique U.S. …

Changing Egypt’S Identity One Picture At A Time, Ethan Pullman Dec 2010

Changing Egypt’S Identity One Picture At A Time, Ethan Pullman

Ethan P Pullman

In the wake of Egypt's recent political revolution, an image circulated on social networks and the internet at large that spread like wild fire – “has gone viral,” as one Facebook user comments. What makes this image revolutionary, and somewhat ironic, is the interplay between image and language reconstructed meaning using the language of the dominant “orientalist” culture that originated it.

Fostering Collaborative And Interdisciplinary Research In Adult Education, Elizabeth Erichsen, Cheryl Goldenstein Dec 2010

Fostering Collaborative And Interdisciplinary Research In Adult Education, Elizabeth Erichsen, Cheryl Goldenstein

Cheryl Goldenstein

The article investigates the interdisciplinary nature of research in adult education and suggests interactive research guides and other interactive resources for fostering collaboration and interdisciplinary inquiry. The purpose is to foster the development of a more functional literacy for information seeking as expressed across disciplines and the thoughtful integration of such information into academic and practical research projects within the field of adult education. Studies of researcher behavior are utilized to suggest some techniques and resources that could be employed more widely in conducting literature searches, including the creation and use of interactive resource guides. Some trends in libraries that …

Once Upon A Place: The Fading Of Community In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth Tunnell Dec 2010

Once Upon A Place: The Fading Of Community In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth Tunnell

Kenneth Tunnell

Across the globe, something is amiss. Even pedestrian observation recognizes that rural communities and small towns are fundamentally changing. Local economies, generations-old cultures, and ingrained ways of life are being severely altered. Within the United States, these changes are symbiotically tied to the demise of the family farm. The decline in family farming and -- the so-called “development” of the country-side -- race along unimpeded and, in fact, are aided by public officials and their policies. With these two great and fundamental changes – the downturn in family farming and the general paving of paradise – locally owned and operated …

Embedded Librarians: Moving Beyond One-Shot Instruction, Cass Kvenild, Kaijsa Calkins Dec 2010

Embedded Librarians: Moving Beyond One-Shot Instruction, Cass Kvenild, Kaijsa Calkins

Cass Kvenild

This first book-length treatment of embedded librarianship showcases strategies for successfully embedding librarians and library services across higher education. Chapters feature case studies and reports on projects from a wide variety of colleges and universities, including some surprising settings and results.

By joining varied groups of patrons and assisting their research over the long haul, embedded librarians commit themselves to service in a very different way than they did in traditional one-shot bibliographic instruction. In this collection, we see librarians using the embedded model to become valuable collaborators, trusted instructors, and partners in shaping the curriculum and broad institutional goals …

Checkpoint: Turning Discourse To Dialogue, Stephanie Kent Dec 2010

Checkpoint: Turning Discourse To Dialogue, Stephanie Kent

Stephanie Jo Kent

This book is an in-depth examination of education and media under occupation. The contributors to this volume engage dialogue to explore these domains and their roles and functioning under occupation while keeping an eye toward resolution, using the on-going conflict between Palestine and Israel as the focus. The uniqueness of this collection is not limited to the willingness of its authors to investigate topics that have often been left out of the mainstream, but that they actually enter into dialogue with one another. Education and media are exemplified as domains that can either maintain the status quo of oppression when …

Attachment Style, Kenneth Levy, William Ellison, Lori Scott, Samantha Bernecker Dec 2010

Attachment Style, Kenneth Levy, William Ellison, Lori Scott, Samantha Bernecker

William D Ellison

Attachment theory, developed by Bowlby to explain human bonding, has profound implications for conducting and adapting psychotherapy. We summarize the prevailing definitions and measures of attachment style. We review the results of three meta-analyses examining the association between attachment anxiety, avoidance, and security and psychotherapy outcome. Fourteen studies were synthesized, which included 19 separate therapy cohorts with a combined sample size of 1,467. Attachment anxiety showed a d of −.46 with posttherapy outcome, while attachment security showed a d of.37 association with outcome. Attachment avoidance was uncorrelated with outcome. The age and gender composition of the samples moderated the relation …

Food Dependence In Rats Selectively Bred For Low Versus High Saccharin Intake: Implications For “Food Addiction.”, V. Yakovenko, E. Speidel, C. Chapman, Nancy Dess Dec 2010

Food Dependence In Rats Selectively Bred For Low Versus High Saccharin Intake: Implications For “Food Addiction.”, V. Yakovenko, E. Speidel, C. Chapman, Nancy Dess

Nancy K Dess

The "food addiction" concept implies that proneness to drug dependence and to food dependence should covary. The latter was studied in low- (LoS) and high- (HiS) saccharin-consuming rats, who differ in drug self-administration (HiS>LoS) and withdrawal (LoS>HiS). Sugary food intake in the first 1-2 h was higher in HiS than LoS rats. Sugar intake predicted startle during abstinence only among LoS rats. These results may suggest bingeing-proneness in HiS rats and withdrawal-proneness among LoS rats. However, intake escalation and somatic withdrawal did not differ between lines. Further study with selectively bred rats, with attention to definitions and measures, …

Accurately Sized Test Statistics With Misspecified Conditional Homoskedasticity, Douglas Steigerwald, Jack Erb Dec 2010

Accurately Sized Test Statistics With Misspecified Conditional Homoskedasticity, Douglas Steigerwald, Jack Erb

Douglas G. Steigerwald

We study the finite-sample performance of test statistics in linear regression models where the error dependence is of unknown form. With an unknown dependence structure there is traditionally a trade-off between the maximum lag over which the correlation is estimated (the bandwidth) and the amount of heterogeneity in the process. When allowing for heterogeneity, through conditional heteroskedasticity, the correlation at far lags is generally omitted and the resultant inflation of the empirical size of test statistics has long been recognized. To allow for correlation at far lags we study test statistics constructed under the possibly misspecified assumption of conditional homoskedasticity. …

The Underground Economy Of Fake Antivirus Software, Douglas Steigerwald, Brett Stone-Gross, Ryan Abman, Richard Kemmerer, Christopher Kruegel, Giovanni Vigna

Douglas G. Steigerwald

Fake antivirus (AV) programs have been utilized to defraud millions of computer users into paying as much as one hundred dollars for a phony software license. As a result, fake AV software has evolved into one of the most lucrative criminal operations on the Internet. In this paper, we examine the operations of three large-scale fake AV businesses, lasting from three months to more than two years. More precisely, we present the results of our analysis on a trove of data obtained from several backend servers that the cybercriminals used to drive their scam operations. Our investigations reveal that these …

Economic Co-Optimization Of Enhanced Oil Recovery And Carbon Sequestration, Andrew Leach, Charles Mason, Klaas Van 'T Veld Dec 2010

Economic Co-Optimization Of Enhanced Oil Recovery And Carbon Sequestration, Andrew Leach, Charles Mason, Klaas Van 'T Veld

Charles F Mason

In this paper, we present an economic analysis of CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR). This technique entails injection of CO2 into mature oil fields in a manner that reduces the oil’s viscosity, thereby enhancing the rate of extraction. As part of this process, significant quantities of CO2 remain sequestered in the reservoir. If CO2 emissions are regulated, oil producers using EOR should therefore be able to earn revenues from sequestration as well as from oil production. We develop a theoretical framework that analyzes the dynamic co-optimization of oil extraction and CO2 sequestration, through the producer’s choice of the fraction of CO2 …
