Promoting Peace And Stability In La Côte D’Ivoire: Negotiating The Cost Of International Inaction And The Need For Decisive Action, Emmanuel Aning, Samuel Atuobi
Emmanuel Kwesi Aning
In this second policy brief on the situation in La Côte d’Ivoire a calling for enforcement action led by the United Nations Operations in La Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) to stop the fighting, protect civilians and restore stability to the troubled country. It is argued that given the extent to which the situation has degenerated, it is only a UN force with a strong enforcement mandate, action and capability that can save the situation and protect hapless civilians who are at the mercy of the warring factions. It is, however, important to note that our main argument in the paper is …

Efficacy Of Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy On Depression Among Muslim Parents Of Autistic Children In Jordan, Siti Hassan
Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.
Parents with autistic children usually are advised to reduce depression in order to improve their mental health. However, studies on depression among parents of autistic children in Jordan are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of group Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) among parents of autistics children in Jordan. An announcement was made for a group cognitive behavioral therapy at three special needs centers in Irbid- Jordan and BDI-II was administrated to 87 parents. Accordingly, 60 parents with the lowest test score were randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. Participants were tested in three times with the …

Military Challenges And Threats In West Africa, Emmanuel Aning, Andrews Atta-Asamoah
Emmanuel Kwesi Aning
Much of the violent and protracted conflicts characteristic of sub-Saharan Africa in the post-Cold War years occurred in West Africa,1 particularly in countries of the Mano River Union (MRU).2 Apart from the fourteen years of intermittent conflict in Liberia, the West African sub-region also witnessed civil war in Sierra Leone; instabilities in Guinea-Bissau, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger and protracted rebellions in the Southern Cassamance Province of Senegal; resource-related conflicts in Nigeria, ethnic conflicts among the Nanumba and Konkomba in northern Ghana; and political instability in Togo.
Short-Term Managerial Contracts And Cartels, Martijn Han
Short-Term Managerial Contracts And Cartels, Martijn Han
Martijn A. Han
This paper shows how a series of commonly observed short-term CEO employment contracts can improve cartel stability compared to a long-term employment contract. When a manager's short-term appointment is renewed if and only if the firm hits a certain profit target, then (i) defection from collusion results in superior firm performance, thus reducing the chance of being fired, while (ii) future punishment results in inferior firm performance, thus increasing the chance of being fired in the future. The introduction of this re-employment tradeoff intertwines with the usual monetary tradeoff and can improve cartel stability. Studying the impact of fixed versus …

Looking Beyond The Obvious: Identifying Patterns In Coles Creek Mortuary Data, Megan Kassabaum
Megan C Kassabaum
While the lack of grave goods has been the focus of most scholarly discussion of Coles Creek burial practices, the mortuary analyses presented here focus on recognizing correspondences among sex, age, and burial position. Using assemblages from three Coles Creek sites (Greenhouse, Lake George, and Mount Nebo), I find that while there is significant intersite variability among Coles Creek mortuary programs, certain age groups are consistently treated differently from each other and from everyone else. Thus interments were being made with deliberate care and consideration for those involved and are not nearly as haphazard and disorderly as previously thought.
The Relationship Of Hope And Strength's Self-Efficacy To The Social Change Model Of Leadership, Natasha Chapman
The Relationship Of Hope And Strength's Self-Efficacy To The Social Change Model Of Leadership, Natasha Chapman
Natasha H Chapman
The social change model of leadership (SCM) is a widely used leadership model in higher education. StrengthsQuest is conceptually similar to the individual values of the SCM in its aim to identify and grow individual talents. This model is
based on the idea that individuals perform at higher levels when they build upon their identified talents (Clifton & Harter, 2003). Prior studies have not examined the relationship of hope or one’s belief in their identified StrengthsQuest talents to the individual values of the SCM. This study examines that relationship using the adult-trait hope and strengths self-efficacy scales. The relationship between …

President Obama has called for the development of new energy technologies to address our national energy needs and restore US economic competitiveness. In response, the Department of Energy has established new R&D modalities for energy research and development designed to facilitate collaboration across disciplinary, institutional, and sectoral boundaries. In this research note, we provide a preliminary assessment of the potential for essential mechanisms for coordinated problem solving among diverse actors within two new modalities at the DOE: Energy Innovation Hubs and Energy Frontier Research Centers.

Impaired Perceptual Judgement At Low Blood Alcohol Concentrations, Tim Friedman, S Robinson, G Yelland
Impaired Perceptual Judgement At Low Blood Alcohol Concentrations, Tim Friedman, S Robinson, G Yelland
Dr Tim Friedman
Males and females show different patterns of cognitive impairment when blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) are high. To investigate whether gender differences persist at low BACs, cognitive impairment was tested in 21 participants (11 female, 10 male) using a brief computerized perceptual judgment task that provides error rate and response time data. Participants consumed a measured dose of alcohol (average peak BAC: females: 0.052 g/100 mL, males: 0.055 g/100 mL), and were tested at four time points spanning both the rising and falling limbs of the BAC curve, in addition to a prealcohol time point. Comparisons were made against performance of …

The Asean-Isis Network: Interpretative Communities, Informal Diplomacy And Discourses Of Region, Diane Stone
Diane L Stone
A network of think tanks–the ASEAN-Institutes of Strategic and International Studies and their researchers–have played a proactive and sometimes influential role in regional debates on Asian economic integration and security cooperation through informal diplomacy. This paper contributes to the literature on knowledge utilisation, specifically debates on the role of policy research institutes in policy making. Paying attention to the debates and research on economic and security cooperation which preceded attempts at institutionalisation drives analytical attention to scholars, think tanks and others in the ‘interpretive community’ who were engaged in a long term learning activity to shape domestic and regional

A Review Of Social And Economic Drivers Of Community Acceptance And Adoption Of Decentralised Water Systems, Aditi Mankad, Sorada Tapsuwan
A Review Of Social And Economic Drivers Of Community Acceptance And Adoption Of Decentralised Water Systems, Aditi Mankad, Sorada Tapsuwan
Sorada Tapsuwan
The aim of this paper is to highlight key social and economic drivers crucial to understanding community acceptance and adoption of decentralised water systems. The review focused on social science literature pertaining to alternative forms of household water, with an emphasis on research examining decentralised water acceptance. Researchers consistently reported that most communities were open to alternative water sources for domestic applications; however, this was highly dependent upon the level of personal contact with the water. Acceptance and adoption of alternative water technology, such as decentralised systems, was influenced by risk perception, water culture, and threat perception. Motivational drivers were …
Identity Crisis: Searching For Personal Responsibility, Justice, And Community In The Real Estate Market Crash, Thomas Bryer
Identity Crisis: Searching For Personal Responsibility, Justice, And Community In The Real Estate Market Crash, Thomas Bryer
Thomas A Bryer
The author introduces the reader to his own and, to a different extent, society’s identity crisis in the context of the real estate market crash. Through personal reflection and analysis of federal policies, four challenges are observed: (1) lack of community focus, (2) neglect of certain populations, (3) unambiguous devotion to encouraging personal responsibility, and (4) no clear statement of moral commitment. Policy and institutional changes are suggested to better address these challenges.

Accumulating Evidence For Parent-Child Interaction Therapy In The Prevention Of Child Maltreatment, Rae Thomas, Melanie Zimmer-Gembeck
Accumulating Evidence For Parent-Child Interaction Therapy In The Prevention Of Child Maltreatment, Rae Thomas, Melanie Zimmer-Gembeck
Rae Thomas
In a randomized controlled trial, the effectiveness of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and correlates of maltreatment outcomes were examined. Mothers (N = 150) had a history or were at high risk of maltreating their children. After 12 weeks and compared to waitlist, PCIT mothers were observed to have improved parent-child interactions and reported better child behavior and decreased stress. At PCIT completion, improvements continued and mothers reported less child abuse potential and had improved maternal sensitivity. Also, PCIT completers were less likely to be notified to child welfare than noncompleters. Finally, those families not notified post-PCIT showed greater reductions in …
