Practicing What You Preach.Pdf, Jana Michelle Hackathorn

Jana Hackathorn

The current studies used the Perceptions of Dating Infidelity Scale (PDIS), which identifies attitudes toward three types of behaviors indicative of cheating: Ambiguous, Deceptive, and Explicit behaviors, to predict actual infidelity behaviors. Participants reported their attitude toward these behaviors and then reported their willingness to engage in these behaviors with a hypothetical target (Study 1) and reported actually engaging in these behaviors over the course of one month (Study 2). Study 1 showed that attitudes for Ambiguous and Deceptive behaviors significantly predict a willingness to engage in these behaviors with a hypothetical target. Study 2 showed that attitudes toward Ambiguous …

Sexual_Satisfaction_In_Marriage(1).Pdf, Jana Michelle Hackathorn

Jana Hackathorn

Aspects of one‟s sexual behaviors, such as expectations, frequency, and types of behaviors affect one‟s sexual satisfaction. The current study investigated both sexual and non-sexual variables associated with sexual satisfaction.  Participants were asked to report the frequency of various specific sexual behaviors within their marital relationship, as well as non-sexual aspects of their lives such as religiosity and faith development.  Results indicated that certain specific sexual behaviors, such as kissing, oral sex, and engaging in sexual conversations, were more likely to be related to greater sexual satisfaction. Additionally, gender differences were found in some correlates of sexual satisfaction.

The Neglected Economic Dimensions Of Ecowas’S Negotiated Peace Accords In West Africa, Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, Samuel Atuobi Dec 2010

The Neglected Economic Dimensions Of Ecowas’S Negotiated Peace Accords In West Africa, Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, Samuel Atuobi

Emmanuel Kwesi Aning

Since its first intervention in Liberia in December 1989, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has, in conjunction with the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN), managed to resolve intrastate violence in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Côte d’Ivoire through its political and military interventions. One aspect of the work undertaken by the ECOWAS that has received little scholarly attention are the economic dimensions of the peace accords it has negotiated. To date, no scholarly work that we know of has focused on this aspect of ECOWAS peace initiatives. The same is true of other peace initiatives, …

Edward Sanchez

This panel presentation report is on the in-house use of virtualization technologies in large research, midsize, and public libraries. Our presenters represent a variety of backgrounds and types of libraries, and will describe how leveraging virtualization in their particular setting has led to increased capacity, while reducing costs, downtime, and management headaches. It is our hope that by sharing our virtualization successes we will broaden the discussion on when to build locally and when to move to the cloud.

For What It‘S Worth: Regional Equity, Community Organizing, And Metropolitan America, Manuel Pastor Jr., Chris Benner, Martha Matsuoka Dec 2010

For What It‘S Worth: Regional Equity, Community Organizing, And Metropolitan America, Manuel Pastor Jr., Chris Benner, Martha Matsuoka

Martha Matsuoka

Regional equity has taken off as a field of research and activism in recent years. Within the general field, three important variants have emerged: community development regionalism, in which the main interest is in using regional levers to promote a new form of community revitalization; policy change regionalism, in which the main emphasis is on shifting government rules to better distribute metropolitan resources; and social movement regionalism, in which the focus is on mobilizing communities for collective action at a regional level. Drawing on a series of case studies from across the country, we argue that all these variants have …

A Path To Providing User-Centered Subject Guides, Tammy Stitz, Shari Laster, Frank J. Bove, Casey Wise

Tammy Stitz

The experience at the University of Akron illustrates a transitional path from static Web sites to dynamic, user-centered Web design. Starting with Web-based subject resource guides that were difficult to maintain and navigate, University Libraries migrated to a content management system that solved existing maintenance issues and created the opportunity for interactive resource lists. Subsequent usability testing found that users needed librarian-designed subject guides to understand and access resources. Consequently, University Libraries redesigned its Web site functionality. In the course of this article, it is shown that ease of maintenance and ease of use need not be mutually exclusive.

Social Network Media Exposure And Adolescent Eating Pathology In Fiji, R H. Striegel, A E. Becker, K E. Fay, J Agnew-Blais, A N. Khan, S E. Gilman Dec 2010

Social Network Media Exposure And Adolescent Eating Pathology In Fiji, R H. Striegel, A E. Becker, K E. Fay, J Agnew-Blais, A N. Khan, S E. Gilman

Ruth Striegel Weissman

BACKGROUND:

Mass media exposure has been associated with an increased risk of eating pathology. It is unknown whether indirect media exposure--such as the proliferation of media exposure in an individual's social network--is also associated with eating disorders.

AIMS:

To test hypotheses that both individual (direct) and social network (indirect) mass media exposures were associated with eating pathology in Fiji.

METHOD:

We assessed several kinds of mass media exposure, media influence, cultural orientation and eating pathology by self-report among adolescent female ethnic Fijians (n=523). We fitted a series of multiple regression models of eating pathology, assessed by the Eating Disorder Examination …

Producing Law For Innovation, Gillian K. Hadfield Dec 2010

Producing Law For Innovation, Gillian K. Hadfield

Gillian K Hadfield

In this chapter I first discuss why we need to think of legal infrastructure as economic infrastructure requiring focused economic policymaking, what is wrong with our existing legal infrastructure and why we need to change our modes of legal production. I then set out a vision of what greater reliance on market-based production of legal infrastructure could look like. Finally, I suggest some concrete steps that policymakers can take to move us toward a more open, competitive system of legal production. These include 1) opening up access to the provision of legal services, such as by establishing a federal licensing …

Radically Rethinking Citizenship: Disaggregation, Agonistic Pluralism, And The Politics Of Immigration In The United States, Robert W. Glover Dec 2010

Radically Rethinking Citizenship: Disaggregation, Agonistic Pluralism, And The Politics Of Immigration In The United States, Robert W. Glover

Robert W. Glover

The status of citizenship and the rights extended to non-citizens are among the most contentious and hotly-debated political issues in numerous Western polities. Some scholars, most notably Seyla Benhabib, have deemed the contemporary changes a ‘disaggregation of rights claims’, in which the interplay between ideals of particularism and universalism lead to an ‘unbundling’ of civil, political, and social rights with formal national membership. Yet this theoretical framing harbors deficiencies which complicate our understanding of the contemporary politics of immigration. In this piece, I critically examine this account to show both its theoretical shortcomings and the incomplete explanations to which these …

Public Libraries In The Lives Of Young Readers, Paulette Rothbauer, Virginia A. Walter, Kathleen Weibel Dec 2010

Public Libraries In The Lives Of Young Readers, Paulette Rothbauer, Virginia A. Walter, Kathleen Weibel

Paulette Rothbauer

Youth services in public libraries have always been characterized by good intentions and commitment to
patrons’ personal choice: to select, to question, and to know. The public library has changed and grown since
its Progressive Era beginnings, and the leadership for much of this change has come from youth services librarians
in their work on behalf of young library users, whether this involves summer programming or digital
media development. This chapter’s three scholars bring a wealth of public library experience to this endeavor,
as they describe the past, present, and future of public library service to young people in the …

Who Volunteers? Constructing A Hybrid Theory, Susan M. Chambre, Christopher J. Einolf Dec 2010

Who Volunteers? Constructing A Hybrid Theory, Susan M. Chambre, Christopher J. Einolf

Christopher J Einolf

This paper is an effort to initiate the development of a hybrid theory of volunteering. It describes three major theoretical perspectives: sociological theories which stress the importance of social context, social integration and social networks; prosocial and value orientations which emphasize the impact of individuals’ attitudes and beliefs regarding the importance of altruistic behavior and a sense of social responsibility; and resource theories that focus on the human capital and economic factors which both allow individuals to volunteer in meaningful ways and make them attractive to organizations.

Using the Midlife in the United States dataset, we operationalized the three theories …
