Language And Culture (Spring 2011 Syllabus), Adam Hodges Dec 2010

Language And Culture (Spring 2011 Syllabus), Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

In this course, we will take an ethnographic approach to examine language as a form of action through which social, cultural and political relations are constituted. Topics will explore language as it intersects with thought, ideology, identity, race and racism, ethnicity, gender, power, and linguistic diversity. In addition to articles, we will read several full-length ethnographies that focus on language practices within particular communities. The goals of the course are to (1) provide an introduction to key ideas in the study of language and culture, including the concepts of ideology, dialogism, identity, and indexicality; (2) equip students with a critical …

Alcohol Use And Popularity: Social Payoffs From Conforming To Peers' Behavior, Michael T. French, Ana Balsa, Jenny Homer, Edward Norton Dec 2010

Alcohol Use And Popularity: Social Payoffs From Conforming To Peers' Behavior, Michael T. French, Ana Balsa, Jenny Homer, Edward Norton

Michael T. French

Although many economic analyses of adolescents have examined the costs of risky behaviors, few have investigated the gains that young people derive from such actions, particularly in terms of social payoffs for complying with peer behavior. This paper studies the relationship between adolescents' use of alcohol (relative to that of their peers) and popularity at school. We use data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a rich and nationally representative survey with detailed information on social networks. Our findings suggest that adolescents are socially rewarded for conforming to their peers' alcohol use and penalized (to a lesser degree) …

Introduction To Discourse Analysis (Fall 2011 Syllabus), Adam Hodges Dec 2010

Introduction To Discourse Analysis (Fall 2011 Syllabus), Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

Discourse analysis places a primary focus on how things are said; and this close attention to the details of ―language in use‖ can offer insight into a variety of questions posed by researchers across the humanities and social sciences. In this course, we will examine the way discourse is itself a form of social action that plays a fundamental role in organizing social, cultural, and political life. In addition to becoming familiar with a variety of approaches and topics in the study of discourse, a major aim of the course is for you to develop the tools and skills needed …

Perceptions Of Family Support Among Students Of Color At A Predominantly White University, Dina C. Maramba, Robert T. Palmer

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

The challenge of facilitating the retention and persistence of students of color in higher education continues. While research has focused on internal factors of the college environment important to the success of students of color at predominantly White institutions (PWIs), this qualitative study examines an external factor—family support and its interconnectedness with the success and persistence of students of color. More specifically, the findings emphasize the importance of family support for this population attending PWIs. Implications for practice and future research are offered.

Price Elasticity Of Expenditure Across Health Care Services, Fabian Duarte Dec 2010

Price Elasticity Of Expenditure Across Health Care Services, Fabian Duarte

Fabian Duarte

Policymakers in countries around the world are faced with rising health care costs and are debating ways to reform health care to reduce expenditures. Estimates of price elasticity of expenditure are a key component for predicting expenditures under alternative policies. Using unique individual-level data compiled from administrative records from the Chilean private health insurance market, I estimate the price elasticity of expenditures across a variety of health care services. These rich data allow me to examine the heterogeneity of price elasticities across types of service and demographic groups. Using exogenous changes in price generated by changes made by the Chilean …

Rat Pup Social Motivation: A Critical Component Of Early Psychological Development, Howard C. Cromwell Dec 2010

Rat Pup Social Motivation: A Critical Component Of Early Psychological Development, Howard C. Cromwell

Howard Casey Cromwell

Examining the role of the offspring in early social dynamics is especially difficult. Human developmental psychology has found infant behavior to be a vital part of the early environmental setting. In the rodent model, the different ways that a rodent neonate or pup can influence social dynamics are not well known. Typically, litters of neonates or pups offer complex social interactions dominated by behavior seemingly initiated and maintained by the primary caregiver (e.g., the dam). Despite this strong role for the caregiver, the young most likely influence the litter dynamics in many powerful ways including communication signals, discrimination abilities and …

Ethnic Differences In Food Sources Of Vitamin D In Adolescent American Girls: The National Heart, Lung, And Blood Institute Growth And Health Study, R H. Striegel, L V. Van Horn, R Bausermann, S Affenito, D Thompson, D Franko, A Albertson

Ruth Striegel Weissman

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study (NGHS) was a 10-year longitudinal study of the development of obesity and CVD risk factors (including dietary, psychosocial, environmental and others) in 2,379 African-American and white females who were 9 or 10 years old at study entry. Current studies have documented a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency among healthy children, adolescents and young adults in the United States, especially among low-income, black and Hispanic children (defined as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations of ≤ 20 ng/mL). Although the main source of vitamin D is direct exposure of the skin …

Disseminating Quality Improvement: Study Protocol For A Large Cluster-Randomized Trial, Michael T. French, Andrew R. Quanbeck, David H. Gustafson, James H. Ford Ii, Alice Pulvermacher, K John Mcconnell, Dennis M. Mccarty Dec 2010

Disseminating Quality Improvement: Study Protocol For A Large Cluster-Randomized Trial, Michael T. French, Andrew R. Quanbeck, David H. Gustafson, James H. Ford Ii, Alice Pulvermacher, K John Mcconnell, Dennis M. Mccarty

Michael T. French

Background: Dissemination is a critical facet of implementing quality improvement in organizations. As a field, addiction treatment has produced effective interventions but disseminated them slowly and reached only a fraction of people needing treatment. This study investigates four methods of disseminating quality improvement (QI) to addiction treatment programs in the U.S. It is, to our knowledge, the largest study of organizational change ever conducted in healthcare. The trial seeks to determine the most cost-effective method of disseminating quality improvement in addiction treatment. Methods: The study is evaluating the costs and effectiveness of different QI approaches by randomizing 201 addiction-treatment programs …

Clarifying Boundaries Of Binge Eating Disorder And Psychiatric Comorbidity: A Latent Structure Analysis, R H. Striegel, A Hilbert, K M. Pike, D E. Wilfley, C G. Fairburn, F A. Dohm

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Binge eating disorder (BED) presents with substantial psychiatric comorbidity. This latent structure analysis sought to delineate boundaries of BED given its comorbidity with affective and anxiety disorders. A population-based sample of 151 women with BED, 102 women with affective or anxiety disorders, and 259 women without psychiatric disorders was assessed with clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires. Taxometric analyses were conducted using DSM-IV criteria of BED and of affective and anxiety disorders. The results showed a taxonic structure of BED and of affective and anxiety disorders. Both taxa co-occurred at an above-chance level, but also presented independently with twice-as-large probabilities. Within …

Kisiel, Christopher M. Layne, George S. Ake Iii, Susan J. Ko, Ellen T. Gerrity, Alan M. Steinberg, Michael L. Howard, Robert S. Pynoos, John A. Fairbank

Christopher M Layne Ph.D.

Many children in the child welfare system (CWS) have histories of recurrent interpersonal trauma perpetrated by caregivers early in life often referred to as complex trauma. Children in the CWS also experience a diverse range of reactions across multiple areas of functioning that are associated with such exposure. Nevertheless, few CWSs routinely screen for trauma exposure and associated symptoms beyond an initial assessment of the precipitating event. This study examines trauma histories, including complex trauma exposure (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, domestic violence), posttraumatic stress, and behavioral and emotional problems of 2,251 youth (age 0 to 21; M=9.5, …

Ownership, Bank Organization And Retail Lending In A Low Income Area, Paola Bongini, Laura Nieri, Maria Luisa Di Battista, Simone Rossi

The focus of this study is on the organizational features of banks operating in the South of Italy, namely major Italian banking groups and local independent banks. In our opinion, in order to evaluate the allocative and operational efficiency of the Southern Italian banking system, the issue to be addressed relates to the potential heterogeneous behavior between banks which are “truly local” – i.e. those banks whose real decisional centres are located in the Southern regions – with respect to those banks operating in the South but which have their decisional centres located in the Centre-North of the country (“outer …

Communicating Risks: Examining Hazard And Outrage In Multiple Contexts, Kenneth Lachlan, Patric R. Spence

Patric R. Spence

This article examines the heuristic value of a model of risk communication outlined by Peter Sandman. It tests and expands the proposed constructs and seeks to establish a measurement model. Results in the first laboratory study indicated congruence between the model and data, while the second demonstrated the capacity for manipulation of the constructs. A field study then extended the measurement model in both scope and usefulness by demonstrating
its utility in an applied setting. Descriptive analyses indicate differences in perceptions of risk on the basis of sex and race. Implications for the use of the model are discussed.

Eating Patterns In Patients With Spectrum Binge Eating Disorder, R H. Striegel, K Harvey, F Rosselli, G T. Wilson, L L. Debar

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Objective

We sought to describe meal and snack frequencies of individuals with recurrent binge eating and examine the association between these eating patterns and clinical correlates.

Method

Data from 106 women with a minimum diagnosis of recurrent binge eating were utilized. Meal and snack frequencies were correlated with measures of weight, eating disorder features, and depression. Participants who ate breakfast every day (n=25) were compared with those who did not (n=81) on the same measures.

Results

Breakfast was the least, and dinner the most, commonly consumed meal. Evening snacking was the most common snacking occasion. Meal patterns were not significantly …

Neither Morality Nor Law: Ritual Propriety As Confucian Civility, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2010

Neither Morality Nor Law: Ritual Propriety As Confucian Civility, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

It is common for recent authors on the topic of “civility” to spend some time sketching
the history of their subject.1 One narrative goes like this: civility emerges in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and is part of a larger trend toward disciplining bodily appetites that enables a new kind of cooperation among individuals. Civility interweaves politeness and political respect; it undergirds modern notions of republicanism, civil society, and the public good. In more recent decades—some writers point to World War I as a turning point, but for others, it is the 1960s—civility has declined or at least changed …
