Spanish Nasal Assimilation Revisited: A Cross-Dialect Electropalatographic Study, Alexei Kochetov, Laura Colantoni Dec 2010

Spanish Nasal Assimilation Revisited: A Cross-Dialect Electropalatographic Study, Alexei Kochetov, Laura Colantoni

Alexei Kochetov

This study employs electropalatography to investigate the implementation of nasal assimilation in two Spanish dialects (Argentine and Cuban) that differ in the realization of word-final nasals as alveolar or velar. 5 speakers of Argentine and 3 speakers of Cuban Spanish were presented with various utterances containing nasals followed by labial, coronal, and dorsal stops and fricatives under two stress conditions. Results revealed that place assimilation of nasals was consistently accompanied by stricture assimilation. The process was generally categorical, that is, the final alveolar or velar nasal adopted the articulation of the following consonant. Nasal + fricative sequences, however, showed a …

Toward A Completely Constructivist Critical Terrorism Studies, Jacob L. Stump, Priya Dixit Dec 2010

Toward A Completely Constructivist Critical Terrorism Studies, Jacob L. Stump, Priya Dixit

Jacob Stump

This paper uses Patrick Thaddeus Jackson’s monism/dualism distinction to clarify ongoing methodological debates among students of critical terrorism studies (CTS). We map the distinction onto the CTS literature and emphasize the distinctive ontological starting points and the distinctive epistemological frameworks entailed by each perspective. Then we critically engage monistic, or interpretivist, CTS research, especially that of Richard Jackson. We argue for a more methodologically explicit and logically consistent interpretivist CTS and we suggest three important steps that researchers can take to achieve this aim: (i) take an explicit ontological stance; (ii) embrace reflexivity; (iii) conceptualize terrorism as a meaning-making practice.

Fiscal Federalism In Chinese Taxation, Wei Cui Dec 2010

Fiscal Federalism In Chinese Taxation, Wei Cui

Wei Cui

The legal debate about the decentralization of taxing power in China has mainly centered around a directive issued by the State Council at the end of 1993, which directive, at the same time as launching the well-known and widely-discussed tax reform of 1994, announced that legislative power regarding taxation would be reserved exclusively for the central government. This directive has no constitutional basis, and its subsequent statutory incarnations are all either incomplete or ambiguous. Moreover, in the adoption of tax regulations for many types of taxes, there have been numerous deviations from this principle of centralization, and the bearing of …

Anthropogenic Landform Modeling Using Gis Techniques Case Study: Vrancea Region, Adrian Ursu, Dan A. Chelaru, Florin C. Mihai Dec 2010

Anthropogenic Landform Modeling Using Gis Techniques Case Study: Vrancea Region, Adrian Ursu, Dan A. Chelaru, Florin C. Mihai

Florin C MIHAI

Anthropogenic landforms are the result of significant changes in the Earth's crust due to technological development of human society, guided by its economic, social and cultural needs. nthropogenic landforms of the studied area was analyzed using GIS techniques at the general scale, conducting the entire study area maps, and detailed modeling of representative samples in detail. Representing the anthropogenic landforms on the digital elevation model can be very important in studying natural hazards, such as hydrological modeling on flood plains, which could influence the direction of the flood wave. The digital elevation model (DEM) made by traditional methods can not …

Dynamic Regulation Design Without Payments: The Importance Of Timing, Raphael Boleslavsky, David L. Kelly Dec 2010

Dynamic Regulation Design Without Payments: The Importance Of Timing, Raphael Boleslavsky, David L. Kelly

Raphael Boleslavsky

We consider a two period model of optimal regulation of a firm subject to marginal compliance cost shocks. The regulator faces an asymmetric information problem: the firm knows current compliance costs, but the regulator does not. Both the regulator and the firm are uncertain about future costs. In our basic framework, the regulator may not offer payments to the firm; we show that the regulator can vary the strength of regulation over time to induce the firm to reveal its costs and increase welfare. In the optimal mechanism, the regulator offers stronger (weaker) regulation in the first period and weaker …

Operating Without A Safety Net: Gay Male Adolescents’ Responses To Marginalization And Migration And Implications For Theory Of Syndemic Production Of Health Disparities, Douglas Bruce, Gary W. Harper, The Atn Dec 2010

Operating Without A Safety Net: Gay Male Adolescents’ Responses To Marginalization And Migration And Implications For Theory Of Syndemic Production Of Health Disparities, Douglas Bruce, Gary W. Harper, The Atn

Douglas Bruce

Health disparities among gay men (HIV, substance use, depression) have been described as a mutually occurring “syndemic” that is socially produced through two overarching dynamics: marginalization and migration. Although the syndemic theory proposes a developmental trajectory, it has been largely based on epidemiological studies of adult gay men and has not been examined using qualitative data from gay male adolescents and emerging adults describing their developmental experience. We conducted interviews with 54 HIV-positive gay and bisexual male adolescents and emerging adults at four sites in the United States. This study provides examples of developmental trajectories that help explain the early …

Revisiting A Proposed Definition Of Professional Service Firms, Asghar Zardkoohi, Leonard Bierman, Daria Panina, Subrata Chakrabarty Dec 2010

Revisiting A Proposed Definition Of Professional Service Firms, Asghar Zardkoohi, Leonard Bierman, Daria Panina, Subrata Chakrabarty

Subrata Chakrabarty

We have attempted to explain why professional service firms (PSFs) even in some of the most canonical examples (e.g., law firms) fail to follow the traditional definition. Growth in the size and geographic diversification of law firms has transformed their organizational structures and in some cases even allowed outside investment. We believe an attempt at defining organizational structure and ownership for any industry, including PSFs, is exposed to creating too many exceptions that may fall outside the confines of the definition. In particular, the problem of defining an industry is that while a given definition may in one context neatly …

The Sidelining Of Top It Executives In The Governance Of Outsourcing: Antecedents, Power Struggles, And Consequences, Subrata Chakrabarty, Dwayne Whitten Dec 2010

The Sidelining Of Top It Executives In The Governance Of Outsourcing: Antecedents, Power Struggles, And Consequences, Subrata Chakrabarty, Dwayne Whitten

Subrata Chakrabarty

This study attempts to highlight the paradoxical aspects of top management power contests within customer firms that outsource information technology (IT) work. Intraorganizational power theory forms the overarching theoretical basis for this study. The focus is on the antecedents and consequences of the relative power of business executives (Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Operating Officer) versus IT executives (Chief Information Officer, Head of IT) in the governance of IT outsourcing. Evidence from a field survey supports the existence of a paradox. When a firm's financial performance has been poor and the firm did not have a sizeable …

Finding An Optimal Path: Highways Versus Local Roads, Gabriel Leiner Dec 2010

Finding An Optimal Path: Highways Versus Local Roads, Gabriel Leiner

Gabriel Leiner

Commuters across the United States are often presented with the dilemma of whether to wait at an onramp to get on a highway or look for short-cuts on local roads. An answer to this question may lie in the use of Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) wireless technology. With the touch of a button, connected vehicle technology could allow drivers to access real time information about the sizes and speeds of queues at highway onramps, as well as the signal phases of traffic lights on local roads. In the future, drivers could rely on this information to make valid judgments …

Overview Of Depression: Epidemiology And Implications For Community Nursing Practice, Chrystalleni Lazarou, Christiana Kouta, Margarita Kapsou, Charis P. Kaite Dec 2010

Overview Of Depression: Epidemiology And Implications For Community Nursing Practice, Chrystalleni Lazarou, Christiana Kouta, Margarita Kapsou, Charis P. Kaite

Dr. Charis P. Kaite

Depressive disorders are among the most common psychological conditions currently affecting individuals living in the Westernized world. Yet, available data indicate that fewer than one third of adults with depression obtain appropriate professional treatment. This is attributed, among other reasons, to the under-recognition of the problem by health professionals, including district nurses. In order to improve recognition of the problem, it is imperative for nurses and especially those working in community settings, to appreciate the importance of prompt diagnosis which presumes both an understanding and knowledge of basic aspects of the problem and, an understanding of their role in dealing …

The Wild Hunt: An Early Attempt To Rationalize Life After Death, Lizzy A. Walker Dec 2010

The Wild Hunt: An Early Attempt To Rationalize Life After Death, Lizzy A. Walker

Lizzy A. Walker

In the Middle Ages, the concept of death in Western culture was as enigmatic as it is in present time. Emotional and psychological reactions regarding death varied, according to the folklore and culture of the people involved; both scholarly and popular beliefs formed to help facilitate the mourning process for individuals and communities alike. One of the most interesting popular stories that arose, spanning a wide variety of different regions and time periods and retold for various purposes, is the legend of the Wild Hunt. While aspects of this legend vary, the central theme is the same. It is always …

R&D Subsidies, Spillovers, And Privatization In Mixed Markets, Maria Jose Gil-Molto, Joanna Poyago-Theotoky, Vasileios Zikos Dec 2010

R&D Subsidies, Spillovers, And Privatization In Mixed Markets, Maria Jose Gil-Molto, Joanna Poyago-Theotoky, Vasileios Zikos

Joanna Poyago-Theotoky

We examine the use of subsidies to research and development (R&D) in a mixed and a private duopoly market. We show that the socially optimal R&D subsidy is increasing in the degree of spillovers, but it is lower in the private duopoly. The optimal R&D subsidy leads to an increase in total R&D and production; however, it does not lead to the equalization of per firm output and therefore to an efficient distribution of production costs. We also find that privatization of the public firm reduces R&D activity and welfare in the duopoly market. This result stands even when optimal …

Right To The Suburb? Rethinking Lefebvre And Immigrant Activism, Clara Irazabal, Genevieve Carpio, Laura Pulido Dec 2010

Right To The Suburb? Rethinking Lefebvre And Immigrant Activism, Clara Irazabal, Genevieve Carpio, Laura Pulido

Clara Irazabal

In the face of increasing migration by Latinos to suburbs and multi-scalar policies criminalizing immigrants, municipalities are increasingly confronting the question, Who has the Right to the Suburb? We seek to better understand how the tensions between suburbanites and Latino immigrants are addressed by municipal governments as immigration enforcement is increasingly rescaled to the local level. Case studies of Maywood and Costa Mesa in Southern California suggest responses are by no means similar and can actually be contrasting, given the city’s historical trajectories, socio-economic status, political leadership, and networks of activists. Suburban struggles are often assumed to be conservative and …
