An Introduction To Item Response Theory For Health Behavior Researchers, Russell Warne Dec 2011

An Introduction To Item Response Theory For Health Behavior Researchers, Russell Warne

Russell T Warne

OBJECTIVE:

To introduce item response theory (IRT) to health behavior researchers by contrasting it with classical test theory and providing an example of IRT in health behavior.

METHOD:

Demonstrate IRT by fitting the 2PL model to substance-use survey data from the Adolescent Health Risk Behavior questionnaire (n=1343 adolescents).

RESULTS:

An IRT 2PL model can produce viable substance use scores that differentiate different levels of substance use, resulting in improved precision and specificity at the respondent level.

CONCLUSION:

IRT is a viable option for health researchers who want to produce high-quality scores for unidimensional constructs. The results from our example-although not …

How Did I Get Talked Into This, Kristine Munoz Dec 2011

How Did I Get Talked Into This, Kristine Munoz

Kristine Muñoz

Persuasion works through personality, emotion, attitudes, perceptions, and a variety of mind tricks and games, played most often on the unsuspecting. This book begins by highlighting academic research into the psychological aspects of persuasion because all of the factors just mentioned are, in fact, powerful and pervasive in everyday life. It then goes beyond this psychological perspective, however, to argue that there are two other means of persuasion, namely social and cultural forces, that are located between and among people rather than inside individuals. Those forces, I argue, persuade us as fully and as regularly as anything located within us, …

Diabetes Management For Low-Income Patients In Los Angeles: Two Strategies Improved Disease Control In The Short Term, Peter Huckfeldt, Daniella Meeker, Anne Peters, Jeffrey Guterman, Guillermo Diaz, Dana Goldman Dec 2011

Diabetes Management For Low-Income Patients In Los Angeles: Two Strategies Improved Disease Control In The Short Term, Peter Huckfeldt, Daniella Meeker, Anne Peters, Jeffrey Guterman, Guillermo Diaz, Dana Goldman

Peter J. Huckfeldt

Health care providers serving vulnerable patients in Los Angeles have developed programs intended to increase diabetes control through more-intensive patient education and engagement. We examined two programs, the first using a short-term intensive intervention by a care team including nurses and a specialist, and the second integrating case management and clinical pharmacy programs into primary care in a community clinic. We show evidence that both models improved short-term disease control, as measured by reductions in HbA1c and low-density lipoprotein (sometimes referred to as “bad” cholesterol). However, integrating case management and clinical pharmacy programs into a primary care setting was less …

Retirement On The Line: Age, Work, And Value In An American Factory, Caitrin Lynch

Caitrin Lynch

In an era when people live longer and want (or need) to work past the traditional retirement age, the Vita Needle Company of Needham, Massachusetts, provides inspiration and important lessons about the value of older workers. Vita Needle is a family-owned factory that was founded in 1932 and makes needles, stainless steel tubing and pipes, and custom fabricated parts. As part of its unusual business model, the company seeks out older workers; the median age of the employees is seventy-four.

Implementing Oclc’S Wms (Web-Scale Management Services) Circulation At Pepperdine University, Sally Bryant, Gan Ye

Gan Ye

This article describes the reasons why Pepperdine University Libraries decided to move to the next-generation technology of WMS as our library system. WMS is an integrated library system hosted by OCLC that is “in the Cloud.” Pepperdine was one of the first libraries to go live with WMS, and in the article we focus on implementation process, circulation, course reserves, and holds. Although WMS is not a perfect system, we believe that libraries are poised to benefit from the next generation of library systems, such as WMS.

Factors Associated With Intention To Conceive And Its Communication To Providers Among Hiv Clients In Uganda, Glenn Wagner, Sebastian Linnemayr, Cissy Kityo, Peter Mugyenyi Dec 2011

Factors Associated With Intention To Conceive And Its Communication To Providers Among Hiv Clients In Uganda, Glenn Wagner, Sebastian Linnemayr, Cissy Kityo, Peter Mugyenyi

Sebastian Linnemayr

Persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) must discuss their fertility intentions with healthcare providers to receive the support needed to have children safely and limit transmission risks. However, few quantitative studies have examined correlates of fertility intentions, let alone the communication of such intentions with providers. We examined the prevalence and correlates of intentions to have children, and comfort discussing such plans with one's providers, in HIV clients at two HIV clinics in Uganda. Cross-sectional self-report data were collected from 233 patients who had primary partners. Bivariate correlates significant at the P < 0.10 level were included in logistic regression analysis. Of the 233 participants, 103 (44%) reported an intention to conceive a child in the near future. In multivariate analysis, younger age of both the patient and their partner, better physical health functioning and higher internalized HIV stigma were associated with having fertility intentions. One-third (35%) of those with fertility intentions expressed having difficulty discussing these intentions with their providers, which was associated with receiving care at the rural clinic and greater internalized HIV stigma. These findings highlight the need for reproductive health services that help clients accept themselves as PLHA and their fertility rights, thus promoting patient-doctor communication needed to promote safe child conception and delivery outcomes.

Exploring "Home" At An Assisted Living Facility: Looking Through The Residents' Lenses With Photovoice, Terri Lewinson, V Robinson-Dooley

Terri Lewinson

Purpose: An increasing number of older adults are moving into assisted living facilities when living independently becomes difficult. For some residents, the transition to and settlement in these facilities can negatively impact psychological well-being. Successful transition into an assisted living facility occurs when a resident feels “at home” in their new environment (Cutchin, Chang & Owen, 2005). It is important to understand residents' perceptions of the assisted living facility while they reconcile the loss of previous homes. Although a growing body of literature exists in this area, there is limited research on how African American older adults perceive the assisted …

Politics Closer To Home: The Impact Of Subnational Institutions On Women In Politics, Candice Ortbals Dec 2011

Politics Closer To Home: The Impact Of Subnational Institutions On Women In Politics, Candice Ortbals

Candice D. Ortbals

Scholars recognize a worldwide increase in decentralization as well as the prevalence of multilevel governance in Europe. This article examines the advantages and disadvantages that meso-level institutions present for women’s political representation in three European Union member-states that are decentralized, unitary states. Using the framework of the triangle of women’s empowerment, we ask whether women are represented in meso-level legislatures, women’s policy agencies, and women’s movements in Italy, Spain, and Poland. We find that gains in meso-level legislatures are slow, but meso-level women’s policy agencies and movements provide important access for women to politics. Like scholars studying women and federalism, …

A Basic Guide To Taxing Economic Rent In Australia, John Passant Dec 2011

A Basic Guide To Taxing Economic Rent In Australia, John Passant

John Passant

Taxing economic rent is one key element in tax reform in Australia and sets possible directions for the future. This paper introduces readers to the ideas of Adam Smith and David Ricardo and others on rent to aid understanding of the debates about economic rent today. The discussion also includes the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax, the Australia’s Future Tax System Report and the Minerals Resource Rent Tax. The thinking of Smith and Ricardo was that rent was unearned gain. It is unearned because it arises as a consequence of the nature of the holding, an exclusive property right against the …

Development And Construct Validation Of Mmpi-2-Rf Indices Of Global Psychopathy, Fearless-Dominance, And Impulsive-Antisociality, Martin Sellbom, Yossef Ben-Porath, Christopher Patrick, Dustin Wygant, Diane Gartland, Kathleen Stafford Dec 2011

Development And Construct Validation Of Mmpi-2-Rf Indices Of Global Psychopathy, Fearless-Dominance, And Impulsive-Antisociality, Martin Sellbom, Yossef Ben-Porath, Christopher Patrick, Dustin Wygant, Diane Gartland, Kathleen Stafford

Dustin B. Wygant

This paper reports on three psychopathy indices derived from scores on the MMPI-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008). In Study 1, we describe the development of such indices referenced to the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI; Lilienfeld & Andrews, 1996) and its two distinguishable facets, Fearless-Dominance and Impulsive-Antisociality. We estimated psychopathy scores by regressing PPI scores onto conceptually selected MMPI-2-RF scales in a combined sample of 825 college students and correctional inmates. In Study 2, we explored the construct validity of these psychopathy measures in college student and correctional samples. The measures demonstrated conceptually expected patterns of associations with …

Fishing For Animal Rights In "The Cove": A Holistic Approach To Animal Advocacy Documentaries, Carrie Freeman Dec 2011

Fishing For Animal Rights In "The Cove": A Holistic Approach To Animal Advocacy Documentaries, Carrie Freeman

Carrie P Freeman

The Oscar-winning 2009 documentary "The Cove" serves as a thrilling and poignant advocacy tool promoting activism to save free-roaming dolphins off the coast of Japan from kidnapping, enslavement in marine parks, and slaughter for meat. This essay evaluates the ethical and social justice implications of The Cove not just for dolphins but for the animal rights movement as a whole, particularly in terms of how it could challenge the ethicality of humans killing any nonhuman animals for food. Strategic media recommendations are made for how animal protection advocates could better deconstruct the human/animal dualism that is at the root of …
