Intent To Purchase A Plug-In Electric Vehicle: A Survey Of Early Impressions In Large U.S. Cites, Rachel Krause Dec 2011

Intent To Purchase A Plug-In Electric Vehicle: A Survey Of Early Impressions In Large U.S. Cites, Rachel Krause

Rachel M. Krause

This paper examines consumer stated intent to purchase plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and assesses the factors that increase or decrease interest. It utilizes a survey of 2,302 adult drivers in 21 large U.S. cities. The survey occurred in early fall 2011, before vehicle manufacturers and dealers began information and marketing campaigns, and thus serves to document early impressions of this emerging transport technology. The central finding of the analysis is that, given current battery technology and public perceptions, overall stated intent to purchase or lease PEVs is low. Interest in plug-in hybrid technology is somewhat greater than interest in all-electric …

School And Residential Neighborhood Food Environment And Diet Among California Youth., Ruopeng An, Roland Sturm Dec 2011

School And Residential Neighborhood Food Environment And Diet Among California Youth., Ruopeng An, Roland Sturm

Roland Sturm

Abstract BACKGROUND: Various hypotheses link neighborhood food environments and diet. Greater exposure to fast-food restaurants and convenience stores is thought to encourage overconsumption; supermarkets and large grocery stores are claimed to encourage healthier diets. For youth, empirical evidence for any particular hypothesis remains limited. PURPOSE: This study examines the relationship between school and residential neighborhood food environment and diet among youth in California. METHODS: Data from 8226 children (aged 5-11 years) and 5236 adolescents (aged 12-17 years) from the 2005 and 2007 California Health Interview Survey were analyzed in 2011. The dependent variables are daily servings of fruits, vegetables, juice, …

Ontologies Of The Future And Interfaces For All: Archaeological Databases For The 21st Century, Angela Labrador Dec 2011

Ontologies Of The Future And Interfaces For All: Archaeological Databases For The 21st Century, Angela Labrador

Angela M Labrador

Archaeological database management systems serve the basic and important functions of ordering, archiving, and disseminating archaeological data. The increased availability of computers and data storage over the past two decades has enabled the exponential growth of archaeological databases and data models. Despite their importance and ubiquity, archaeological database systems are rarely the subject of theoretical analysis within the discipline due to their ‘‘black box’’ nature and the perceived objectivity of computerized systems. Inspired by H. Martin Wobst’s meditations on materiality and disciplinary ethics, in this paper I explore how archaeological database systems structure archaeological interpretation and disciplinary practice. In turn, …

New Approaches To Reducing And Mitigating Harm To Civilians, Greg Mcneal Dec 2011

New Approaches To Reducing And Mitigating Harm To Civilians, Greg Mcneal

Greg McNeal

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan highlighted the strategic importance of the U.S. commitment to civilian protection. Both wars were eventually fought as a counterinsurgency (COIN) and both revealed how protecting civilians is a central feature of COIN. This chapter examines the importance of civilian casualty mitigation in U.S. counterinsurgency operations, it describes the theoretical and practical lessons learned regarding civilian casualties and situates them in a broader strategic context. The chapter also describes the U.S. military’s newest doctrinal publication aimed specifically at preventing and mitigating harm to civilians. The chapter concludes noting that protecting the population and winning hearts …

Brushed-Off Testimony, Stanley Brodsky, Dustin Wygant

Dustin B. Wygant

In line with years of tradition, soldiers young and old come together at the local pub or hall to swap war stories of time in the trenches. For the forensic clinician, the trenches represent the hard-fought battles during expert testimony. As it turns out, our pub was a social gathering at the 2012 meeting of the American Psychology Law Society in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The University of Alabama Psychology Law Program hosted a social gathering for its faculty, graduate students, alumni, and friends to come together and share stories and camaraderie. It was in this setting that we launched …

Motivational Factors Related To Female Participation In Collegiate Sports, Francisco Soto Mas Dec 2011

Motivational Factors Related To Female Participation In Collegiate Sports, Francisco Soto Mas

Francisco Soto Mas

Despite the many health benefits, physical activity trends in females have been consistently reported to be lower than that of males. Other demographic variables may also be related to sport participation. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that motivate college females to participate in sports. This was a cross sectional, causal-comparative survey study. Eight motivational factors were explored: fitness, skill/mastery, enjoyment, affiliation/recognition, team factors, ego/competition, parental support, and external rewards. Female college athletes (N=82) from two post-secondary institutions were surveyed using the 35-item Modified Sports Motivation Survey. Results indicated that all factors were important to participants …

Household Portfolio Choices, Health Status And Health Care Systems: A Cross-Country Analysis Based On Share, Vincenzo Atella, Brunetti Marianna, Nicole Maestas Dec 2011

Household Portfolio Choices, Health Status And Health Care Systems: A Cross-Country Analysis Based On Share, Vincenzo Atella, Brunetti Marianna, Nicole Maestas

Nicole Maestas

Health risk is increasingly viewed as an important form of background risk that affects household portfolio decisions. However, its role might be mediated by the presence of a protective full-coverage National Health System that could reduce households’ probability of incurring current and future out-of-pocket medical expenditures. In this paper, we first sketch a theoretical framework in which household portfolio decisions are a function of both individual and systemic characteristics. Then, we test its main implications based on SHARE data, studying the influence of current health status and future health risk on the decision to hold risky assets, across 10 European …

Different Roles And Different Results: How Activity Orientations Correspond To Relationship Quality And Student Outcomes In School-Based Mentoring, Julia Pryce Dec 2011

Different Roles And Different Results: How Activity Orientations Correspond To Relationship Quality And Student Outcomes In School-Based Mentoring, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

This prospective, mixed-methods study investigated how the nature of joint activities between volunteer mentors and student mentees corresponded to relationship quality and youth outcomes. Focusing on relationships in school-based mentoring programs in low-income urban elementary schools, data were obtained through pre–post assessments, naturalistic observations, and in-depth interviews with mentors and mentees. Adopting an exploratory approach, the study employed qualitative case study methods to inductively identify distinctive patterns reflecting the focus of mentoring activities. The activity orientations of relationships were categorized according to the primary functional role embodied by the mentor and the general theme of interactions: teaching assistant/ tutoring, friend/engaging, …

Mentoring Attunement: An Approach To Successful School-Based Mentoring Relationships, Julia Pryce Dec 2011

Mentoring Attunement: An Approach To Successful School-Based Mentoring Relationships, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

Despite the ongoing popularity and appeal of youth mentoring programs across myriad of contexts, the achievement of high quality relationships between adult volunteers and school-aged youth remains a vital challenge to the work of youth development professionals. This paper outlines the role of mentor attunement in the experience of relationships between volunteer adults and youth in schools. Through an in-depth, inductive analysis of qualitative data, including on-site observation of relationship development over time, attunement at varying levels is illustrated. Implications for future research and program development are discussed.

An Investigation Of Volunteer-Student Relationship Trajectories Within School-Based Youth Mentoring Programs, Julia Pryce Dec 2011

An Investigation Of Volunteer-Student Relationship Trajectories Within School-Based Youth Mentoring Programs, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

This prospective, mixed-method study investigates the development of school-based mentoring relationships using direct observations, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires from the perspective of mentors and students. A pattern-oriented analysis of qualitative data explores the diversity observed in the life-course of mentor-student relationships. Systematic variation in developmental trends across relationships revealed four distinctive groupings. Some relationships showed progressive improvement in strength and quality. Others started well but reached a plateau and did not become particularly close. A third group struggled throughout to make a connection. Finally, some relationships succeeded after a breakthrough to overcome their challenges. These inductively derived categories are corroborated …

Slaves, Cannibals, And Infected Hyper-Whites: The Race And Religion Of Zombies, Elizabeth Mcalister Dec 2011

Slaves, Cannibals, And Infected Hyper-Whites: The Race And Religion Of Zombies, Elizabeth Mcalister

Elizabeth McAlister

The first decade of the new millennium saw renewed interest in popular culture featuring zombies. This essay shows that a comparative analysis of nightmares can be a productive method for analyzing salient themes in the imaginative products and practices of cultures in close contact. It is argued that zombies, as the first modern monster, are embedded in a set of deeply symbolic structures that are a matter of religious thought. The author draws from her ethnographic work in Haiti to argue that the zonbi is at once part of the mystical arts that developed there since the colonial period, and …

Love American Style And Divorce Toraja Style: Lessons From A Tale Of Mutual Reflexivity In Indonesia, Kathleen Adams Dec 2011

Love American Style And Divorce Toraja Style: Lessons From A Tale Of Mutual Reflexivity In Indonesia, Kathleen Adams

Kathleen M. Adams

The author recounts an episode from her ethnographic research in Tana Toraja, Sulawesi, Indonesia, when she was obliged to shed her comfortably familiar ‘fieldworker’ role and stray from a pre-plotted research agenda into emotionally dangerous terrain. She explores the serendipitous insights that can emerge only when the classic division between the realm of research and one's private life is muddied. By recounting some Toraja responses to the news of her impending divorce, the author examines the unexpected and occasionally destabilising understandings that emerge from these personal exchanges. The unanticipated insights concern both Toraja and American conceptions of marriage and its …
