Decision Support For Vessel Traffic Service (Vts): User Needs For Dynamic Risk Management In The Vts, Gesa Praetorius
Gesa Praetorius
Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is a shore-side service implemented by a “Competent Authority to improve the safety and efficiency of vessel traffic and to protect the environment”. It is a service that operates through VTS centers, from which VTS operators monitor traffic, assist in navigational matters and provide information to all ships in a designated area. As VTS is provided by operators located on shore, they usually make use of several decision support systems to be able to monitor the traffic and to provide information to the vessels. Although several new tools and approaches have been introduced in the VTS …

Precedent Or Preference? Music Recommender Systems And The Challenge Of Genre, Jason Neal
Precedent Or Preference? Music Recommender Systems And The Challenge Of Genre, Jason Neal
Jason R. Neal
With the advent of user-generated content and the capabilities of current information and communication technologies, indexing and retrieval tools for music should facilitate discovery that transcends genre boundaries. Nonetheless, they still privilege genre as the primary mode of categorization. Even recommender systems, which utilize other measures to determine similarity, give the appearance of drawing upon genre. By examining the ambiguous boundaries and definitions of genres, the contexts in which indexing and retrieval tools for music have developed, and the roles played by music at individual and societal levels, this paper considers alternative traits that could act as indicators of “similarity.”

Felon Disenfranchisement The Judiciary’S Role In Renegotiating Racial Divisions, Brian Schaefer, Peter Kraska
Felon Disenfranchisement The Judiciary’S Role In Renegotiating Racial Divisions, Brian Schaefer, Peter Kraska
Peter Kraska
Felon disenfranchisement is deeply rooted in U.S. history as a form of punishment and as a tool to inhibit African Americans from voting. Today, there are 5.3 million U.S.
residents politically disenfranchised due to a felony conviction—about 2 million of whom are African Americans. The overrepresentation of African Americans disenfranchised, and the U.S. history of racism, brings forth the question of how these laws continue to exist. The objective of this study is to demonstrate, through a socio–legal approach, the federal court system’s role in perpetuating and maintaining the ethnoracial divisions in society through the validation and rationalization of felon …

The Extracellular Chaperone Clusterin Sequesters Oligomeric Forms Of The Amyloid-Beta 1-40 Peptide, Priyanka Narayan, Angel Orte, Richard Clarke, Benedetta Bolognesi, Sharon Hook, Kristina Ganzinger, Sarah Meehan, Mark Wilson, Christopher Dobson, David Klenerman
Mark R Wilson
In recent genome-wide association studies, the extracellular chaperone protein, clusterin, has been identified as a newly-discovered risk factor in Alzheimer's disease. We have examined the interactions between human clusterin and the Alzheimer's disease-associated amyloid-β 1-40 peptide (Aβ 1-40), which is prone to aggregate into an ensemble of oligomeric intermediates implicated in both the proliferation of amyloid fibrils and in neuronal toxicity. Using highly sensitive single-molecule fluorescence methods, we have found that Aβ 1-40 forms a heterogeneous distribution of small oligomers (from dimers to 50-mers), all of which interact with clusterin to form long-lived, stable complexes. Consequently, clusterin is able to …

Key Concepts For Theorizing Spanish As A Heritage Language, Andrew Lynch
Andrew Lynch
In this chapter, I provide a selective, critical overview of the principal theoretical concepts that have served to frame studies of Spanish as a heritage language in the United States since the 1970s. Among the concepts I consider are: diglossia, standard language, proficiency, register, agency, and generation.

Fiestas, For 12 Percussionists, Bruno Louchourn
Fiestas, For 12 Percussionists, Bruno Louchourn
Bruno Louchouarn
Fiestas is conceptually inspired by the "Feasts" as social rituals. The musical process and form mirror aspects of group dynamic in these gatherings. Although a few individual players may at times dominate, the ensemble has to "conduct" itself with several sub-groups emerging and disappearing. The main theme, introduced by hand claps, is an oscillation slowly quickening to a fast trepidation, giving way to a stable polyrhythm. The degree of synchronization between players or groups of players varies and generally increases toward more order as the piece unfolds. I wanted to impart a sense of “orchestra” to the group with relatively …

Developing A Taxonomy Of Helpful And Harmful Practices For Clinical Work With Boys And Men, Ronald Levant, James Mahalik, David Tager, Christopher Mackowiak, Glenn Good
Ronald F Levant
This study drew upon the knowledge base of APA-member practitioners to develop a taxonomy of helpful and harmful practices for treatment with boys and men. Four-hundred seventy five APA-member practitioners solicited from practice-related divisions provided responses to four open-ended questions about helpful and harmful practices in working with boys and men. Qualitative analyses revealed 10 themes that emerged from the analyses. Beneficial and sensitive practices included addressing gender socialization and gender sensitive issues as they apply to boys and men in psychological practice. Harmful practices included biased practices, stereotypes, and a lack of awareness and training around gender and diversity …
