Magic As Political Might: Harry Potter, Authoritarianism, And Youth Political Behavior, Alexis Cobbs Apr 2023

Magic As Political Might: Harry Potter, Authoritarianism, And Youth Political Behavior, Alexis Cobbs

Honors Theses

This thesis examines how authoritarian structures found in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series affect the political thoughts and behaviors of its readers, particularly those who read them at young ages. By examining how Rowling depicts authoritarianism and its opposition in the books, I hypothesized that increased exposure would correlate to an increased impact on readers’ political opinions. To test this hypothesis, I created an original survey designed to measure levels of exposure and participation in the Harry Potter fandom as well as respondents’ political opinions. I asked respondents to provide different examples of authoritarianism and its opposition in the books …

Lack Of Black Female Diversity Within The Cybersecurity Workforce, Eric Preston

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

Cybersecurity methods, strategies, and programs for protecting computers and electronic devices have become critically important in all aspects of the technological infrastructure. However, while this is a vastly growing field that has a large workforce, it suffers from a lack of representation, specifically for Black/African American females. This study examines the barriers that prevent Black women from having representation within the cybersecurity workforce and solutions that address them. Some barriers noted include a lack of role models and resources, historical discrimination and systemic barriers, and cultural norms. Additionally, implications created by these barriers include less diversity, a lack of career …

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Cyberthreats And Democratic Backsliding, Amy I. Browning Apr 2023

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Cyberthreats And Democratic Backsliding, Amy I. Browning

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

Interstate conflict has developed beyond conventional tactics to include the cyber realm, making cybersecurity a key component of international relations and an integral part of state defense plans. Research in international security has included the analyses of the relative success or failures of particular cyberattacks. However, the instigators behind these attacks receive comparatively little attention, leaving a gap in knowledge for when, why, and where cyberthreats are likely to emerge. Recent analysis has found that democratic institutions are likely to hinder state-sponsored cyberattack initiation. A consideration that the latest wave of global democratic backsliding could be fueling cyberthreats must be …

Applicable Mitigation Strategies And Technology Propositions: Preventing Scamming In Marginalized Populations, Grace Nicole Sandhofer-Adams Apr 2023

Applicable Mitigation Strategies And Technology Propositions: Preventing Scamming In Marginalized Populations, Grace Nicole Sandhofer-Adams

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

This essay serves as a proposal for new technology and mitigation against the scamming of marginalized individuals (i.e., those over the age of 65). Research supports this outline, giving background to the types of scams, and prevention strategies currently seen in the cybersecurity landscape. It is evident that the methods we currently use to combat scamming attacks are not effective, therefore, I propose a new solution. This proposed telecommunications strategy is necessary to prevent scamming of all internet users, no matter the device. This telecommunication strategy would use artificial intelligence and machine learning to constantly improve its detection over time, …

Investigating The Effects Of Work-Family Conflict On Turnover Intention Of Ict Employees In Malaysia, Lai Meng Lee, Su Wan Gan, Yong Sheng Chia

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

With the intensified focus on information and communication technology (ICT) as a driver of the Malaysian economy, pressure will increase on the recruitment and retention of ICT employees. However, work overload and conflict with family roles may lead to a higher level of turnover intention among ICT employees. The objective of this study is to investigate the predicting effects of all forms of work-family conflict (time-based, strain-based and behavior-based) on turnover intentions. This quantitative cross-sectional study utilizes primary data collected from 200 employees from ICT companies in the Klang valley using purposive sampling. Various statistical analyses such as correlation and …

Understanding Involuntary Illegal Online Gamblers In The U.S.: Framing In Misleading Information By Online Casino Reviews, Sinyong Choi Apr 2023

Understanding Involuntary Illegal Online Gamblers In The U.S.: Framing In Misleading Information By Online Casino Reviews, Sinyong Choi

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Although there are many illegal online gamblers in the United States who use offshore gambling sites while falsely believing that their activity is legitimate, few studies have focused on the role of online casino reviews (OCR) who facilitate this activity. These reviews, for a variety of reasons, may present misleading information designed to encourage U.S. players to use offshore gambling sites. Using framing theory and neutralization techniques, we conducted a content analysis of multiple OCR to examine how they present information and justifications regarding the use of offshore gambling sites in the U.S. The findings indicate that many OCR positively …

Do Attitudes Toward Police Mediate The Relationship Between Judgment Response Times And Judgments Of Police Use Of Force?, Kali Goldman, Alex Fusee Apr 2023

Do Attitudes Toward Police Mediate The Relationship Between Judgment Response Times And Judgments Of Police Use Of Force?, Kali Goldman, Alex Fusee

Undergraduate Research Competition

In the current study we examined how people’s attitudes toward police might mediate the relationship between the length of time it takes people to make judgments of an officer’s use of excessive force and their actual judgments of the officer’s use of force. Research on dual-processing theories of decision-making suggests that people might rely on their attitudes toward police when making determinations of police officer behavior (Bornstein & Greene, 2011; Yeong, 1999). Based on this research, we believe that people likely use their attitudes toward police when engaging in the judgment formation process and deciding whether an officer used excessive …

Non-State Actors And International Crisis Outcomes, 1987-2017, Taylor Schubert Apr 2023

Non-State Actors And International Crisis Outcomes, 1987-2017, Taylor Schubert

Undergraduate Research Competition

This study examines the way non-state actor involvement affects the outcome of international crises. This was tested by looking at a set of international crises from 1987 through 2017. We find that the involvement of a non-state actor in an international crisis is associated with a greater likelihood of the crisis terminating via agreement or unilateral act, and a reduced likelihood of a crisis fading away. Additionally, we find that non-state actors who engage in direct fighting as a part of the crisis are further associated with negotiated and unilaterally-imposed outcomes, but that non-state actors who control territory are less …

Examining Curriculum Requirements Of Undergraduate Teacher Preparation Programs To Gauge Educator Knowledge Of Trauma-Informed Education Frameworks, Laura Grace King Apr 2023

Examining Curriculum Requirements Of Undergraduate Teacher Preparation Programs To Gauge Educator Knowledge Of Trauma-Informed Education Frameworks, Laura Grace King

College of Education Publications and Scholarship

Statistics show that many pre-K–12 students in the United States are exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) or potentially traumatic events (PTEs), and a growing body of literature points to these childhood experiences harming children’s academic functioning and future educational attainment. A review of the literature on trauma-informed education (i.e., curriculum and programs designed to mitigate the negative effects of trauma) highlights many teachers’ lack of confidence in combatting issues within student populations affected by adversity and trauma; the research also indicated that teachers with knowledge of trauma/adversity and its implications are crucial to effectively educating at-risk children and adolescents. …

The Impact Of Doctor-Patient Communication, Health Literacy, And Mental Health Among Women With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus On Healthcare Usage, Marissa Stern

Honors Projects in Communication

Pregnancy is a critical period in a woman's life. Overall, little research has been done on pregnant women. Pregnant women are considered a special population with special needs. All pregnant women must receive proper care from their providers and be a part of the decision-making process. Additionally, health care providers must provide materials to patients in hopes to increase their health literacy. Increasing health care usage and health literacy is meant to increase patient-centered care. This study plans to use the All of Us data set. We are interested in the data from the survey component of the data set. …

Communication Theory Analysis Of Coda Movie, Lindsay Casey

Honors Theses

This undergraduate honors thesis addresses how the hearing community views and treats the d/Deaf community. The contents of this thesis include a literature review, communication theory, and qualitative analysis of the film, CODA (2021). Findings leave the hearing community with three main suggestions to implement when interacting with the d/Deaf community. These suggestions include acknowledging the daily communication struggle amongst members of the d/Deaf community, maintenance in a conversation may lead to exploitation and finally, due to different speech codes we should enact cultural respect towards others.

The literature review consists of an overview of the d/Deaf community’s history including …

Exploring Support Seeking Behaviours Of First-Year Students To Predict Academic Performance, Easha Faisal

Brescia Psychology Undergraduate Honours Theses

Academic performance during first year is critical in determining student retention rates, later undergraduate performance, and career related prospects. Previous literature has assessed importance of predictors individually. This study combined predictors to develop a model to predict academic performance of first-year students (n = 90) based on motivated learning strategies and on-campus resource use. An online survey was created to evaluate students’ help-seeking (HS), peer learning (PL), self-efficacy (SE), perceived social support (PSS) and access to social support (SSA) and academic support (ASA) resources. Consistent with previous research, SE was the strongest predictor of academic performance. Additionally, HS, SE, ASA, …

Tattoos And Healing: Considerations From An Art Therapy Lens, Marielle Carpentier Apr 2023

Tattoos And Healing: Considerations From An Art Therapy Lens, Marielle Carpentier

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Tattooing in North America is becoming more common as negative stigmas change and the types of tattoos available are as diverse as the people getting them. One interesting new motivation guiding individuals to get tattooed is a potential healing or therapeutic benefit. The field of art therapy explores how art can facilitate healing and the therapeutic process. Because of the emerging literature exploring these new tattoo motivations and the need for art therapists to continually expand their understanding of art and its many applications it would be beneficial for art therapists to understand this emerging practice. The literature in this …

Exploring Hapi Incidence In Patients Admitted Through The Ed: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Alexa L. Tietgens

DNP Scholarly Projects

Each year in the U.S., pressure injuries, or PIs, are responsible for more than 60,000 patient deaths and billions of dollars’ worth of treatment costs. Research shows that roughly 95% of all PIs are preventable by following evidence-based practice guidelines which include early identification of patients at risk, frequent skin assessments, and implementation of prevention strategies. However, the ED environment creates unique risks for PI development due to the routine use of hard surfaces (i.e., stretchers, backboards, exam tables) and frequent hospital overcrowding. Although nurses play a pivotal role in PI prevention, frequent staffing shortages, high patient acuity levels, and …

Families And Friends Of Homicide Victims’ Experiences With The Healthcare System: A Trauma-Informed Perspective, Jeanna Mastrocinque, R.S. Martino, Wanda Foglia, P. Navratil, J. Metzger, E. A. Cerceo

College of Humanities and Social Sciences Departmental Research

Introduction: Families and friends of homicide victims (FFHV) interact with healthcare systems almost immediately after the traumatic event. Their interactions with healthcare providers can either facilitate healing, have a neutral effect, or compound an already painful experience. When trauma victims are admitted to the hospital, resources are necessarily diverted on their behalf with less consistent attention paid to their families and friends. The interactions surrounding the immediate circumstance as well as experiences in the weeks to months after can have significant long-term impact. This study explores the needs and experiences of FFHV when interacting with the healthcare system to inform …

Non-Abstinent Recovery In Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention: Exploring Mechanisms Of Change And Social Moderators, David I.K Moniz-Lewis Apr 2023

Non-Abstinent Recovery In Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention: Exploring Mechanisms Of Change And Social Moderators, David I.K Moniz-Lewis

Psychology ETDs

Recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) is heterogeneous by nature. Yet, over the last 50 years, substance use treatment providers and researchers have often defined success as sustained abstinence from substances. An often overlooked but equally valid pathway to recovery for persons with SUD is non-abstinent recovery. However, the majority of the literature on non-abstinent recovery exists for individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) with little empirical inquiry into non-abstinent recovery for other types of SUD. Additionally, there is also no known literature, to date, that explores the mechanisms that lead to non-abstinent recovery for individuals who have engaged in …
