Measures Of Assortativity, Ted Bergstrom Dec 2012

Measures Of Assortativity, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper discusses alternative measures of assortative matching and relates them to Sewall Wright's F-statistic. We also explore applications of measures of assortativity to evolutionary dynamics. We generalize Wright's statistic to allow the possibility that some types match more assortatively than others, and explore the possibility of identifying parameters of this more general model from the observed distribution of matches by the partners' types.

Occupational Mobility Patterns: A Case Study Of Leadership And Access In The National Football League, C. Harrison, Scott Bukstein Dec 2012

Occupational Mobility Patterns: A Case Study Of Leadership And Access In The National Football League, C. Harrison, Scott Bukstein

Scott Bukstein JD

This short report provides an overview and analysis of data on coaching mobility patterns in the National Football League (NFL). Previous studies in this area have generally focused on the effectiveness of the Rooney Rule (for example, analyzing the hiring process and proposing new strategies to increase the number of non-White head coaches) and comparing the win/loss records of White and non-White head coaches (for example, determining whether non-White coaches are provided with a meaningful opportu- nity to turn around a team with a losing record). This report focuses on whether Whites and non-Whites face systemic and socio-cultural access barriers …

Prospective Cohort Study Of The Impact Of Antiretroviral Therapy (Art) On Employment Outcomes Among Hiv Clients In Uganda, Sebastian Linnemayr, Cissy Kityo, Peter Mugyenyi, Peter Glick, Glenn Wagner Dec 2012

Prospective Cohort Study Of The Impact Of Antiretroviral Therapy (Art) On Employment Outcomes Among Hiv Clients In Uganda, Sebastian Linnemayr, Cissy Kityo, Peter Mugyenyi, Peter Glick, Glenn Wagner

Sebastian Linnemayr

This study evaluates the impact of antiretroviral treatment (ART) on employment-related outcomes using prospective, longitudinal analysis. 602 treatment-naïve clients in one rural clinic and one clinic in the capital Kampala were interviewed starting in January 2008 about their medical history, psychosocial and socioeconomic adjustment at baseline and month six and twelve. Half of the sample was eligible to receive ART, while the other half was also in HIV care but not yet eligible for ART, thus providing a comparison group that is similar to the treatment group in that its members are HIV-positive and have made the decision to enroll …

It's All Up In The Clouds, Gan Ye, Sally Bryant Dec 2012

It's All Up In The Clouds, Gan Ye, Sally Bryant

Gan Ye

Our roadmap to the cloud started with WorldCat Local as our catalog/discovery system. Next we moved to OCLC's WorldShare Management Services (WMS), a cloud-based ILS system/platform including the License module and WorldCat Knowledge Base we use to manage our e-resources. At the same time, the cloud also moved into public services with the use of the Springshare platform for our reference, instruction, statistics and room reservation systems. Staff scheduling is also in the cloud with Whentowork. All of these cloud based technology changes have revolutionized the way librarians and staff do their routine jobs. The impact on our workflow has …

The Change Program: Methodology For Comparing Interactive Co-Active Coaching With A Prescriptive Lifestyle Treatment For Obesity, Don Morrow, Erin Pearson, Jennifer Irwin Dec 2012

The Change Program: Methodology For Comparing Interactive Co-Active Coaching With A Prescriptive Lifestyle Treatment For Obesity, Don Morrow, Erin Pearson, Jennifer Irwin

Donald Morrow

Studies incorporating Motivational Interviewing via Co-Active life coaching (MI-via-CALC) have elicited positive results among obese adults; however there is a paucity of comprehensive MI-via-CALC-obesity research that includes sufficient statistical power and a validated comparison group. The purpose of this study was to compare two telephone-based interventions for obesity. University students were randomized to either a 12-week: (a) personalized MI-via-CALC program whereby a coach worked with participants to achieve goals; or (b) prescriptive education-based lifestyle treatment following the LEARN Program. This paper contains a detailed methodological account of the study with a view to informing the development of prospective coaching-based programs.

Elements Of Public Trust In The American Food System: Experts, Organizations, And Genetically Modified Food, John Lang Dec 2012

Elements Of Public Trust In The American Food System: Experts, Organizations, And Genetically Modified Food, John Lang

John T. Lang

The increasing scientific and technical complexity in the American system of food production, exemplified in this article by genetically modified food (GMF), provides a useful case with which to understand public trust in experts and organizations involved in an emerging technology. Stating that the public will judge claims about GMF based on trust in their sources brings about the question of how the public decides to trust particular sources. I use data from a mail survey to evaluate the elements of trust for a range of groups connected to the U.S. food industry. The results point to organizationally variable and …

Young Professionals As Ambivalent Change Agents In New Orleans After The 2005 Hurricanes, Renia Ehrenfeucht, Marla Nelson Dec 2012

Young Professionals As Ambivalent Change Agents In New Orleans After The 2005 Hurricanes, Renia Ehrenfeucht, Marla Nelson

Renia Ehrenfeucht

After the 2005 hurricanes, newcomers arrived in New Orleans to help rebuild the city. The influx of one identifiable group, young professionals and postgraduates, raised hopes and concerns that New Orleans would gentrify. Based on semistructured interviews with 78 young and mid-career professionals, this paper examines how the young professionals approached an ambivalent situation where they were working to rebuild a better city while retaining its distinct cultural qualities, given that their presence itself contributed to the cultural change. They reconciled these tensions with an appreciation for localism that, for newcomers in particular, was expressed through knowing and responding to …

Health Locus Of Control, Self-Awareness, And Integrative Eating Styles In University Students, Peta Stapleton, Hayley Smith Dec 2012

Health Locus Of Control, Self-Awareness, And Integrative Eating Styles In University Students, Peta Stapleton, Hayley Smith

Peta B. Stapleton

The psychological and physical well-being of students is a cause for concern. For the majority of the student population this means substantial changes in healthy behaviours including eating habits. The current research was aimed at investigating integrative eating in 170 Australian university students. Self-awareness and health locus of control were measured in order to assess their relative impact on positive integrative eating practices. The self-report measures included Your Personal Eating Style Profile, Forms A and B of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale, and the Situational Self-Awareness Scale. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses provided tentative support for the hypothesis that …

Reflexivity In External Religious Leaders' Summit Communication Sequences (2005-2012) To G8 Political Leaders, Sherrie Steiner Dec 2012

Reflexivity In External Religious Leaders' Summit Communication Sequences (2005-2012) To G8 Political Leaders, Sherrie Steiner

Sherrie M Steiner

Using reflexivity as primary governance indicator, this case study examines the external communication sequences of the only multifaith summits whose purpose is communication to, and dialogue with, G8 and G20 political leaders about global responsibilities to empirically discern, independent of religious leaders' self-identification, whether the quality of dialogue is indicative of governance behavior or unreflexive acts of international value struggle. Findings indicate that religious leaders use cultural capital to blur (not reify) social boundaries that inhibit international collaboration, and offer no evidence of unreflexive dialogue. These particular leaders use social capital to socially reconstruct boundaries for cosmopolitan responsibility to include …

The Effects Of A Computer Malfunction On Subsequent Task Performance, Nicole Zimmerman, Everett Sambrook, Jonathan Gore Dec 2012

The Effects Of A Computer Malfunction On Subsequent Task Performance, Nicole Zimmerman, Everett Sambrook, Jonathan Gore

Jonathan Gore

Although previous research has examined the effects of computer malfunctions on employee frustration, to our knowledge no research has explored computer malfunction's effect on subsequent task performance. It was hypothesised that participants who experience a malfunction would perform worse on a subsequent task than those who experience no malfunction. Participants (n = 204) were randomly assigned to experience either a computer malfunction or not during the first task. Participants then completed a subsequent task. The results confirmed that the Malfunction group performed worse than the Control group on both tasks. Implications for workplace performance are discussed.

Moderated Path Analysis Of The Relationships Between Masculinity And Men’S Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help., Ronald Levant, Dimitre Stefanov, Thomas Rankin, Margaret Halter, Chris Mellinger Dec 2012

Moderated Path Analysis Of The Relationships Between Masculinity And Men’S Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help., Ronald Levant, Dimitre Stefanov, Thomas Rankin, Margaret Halter, Chris Mellinger

Ronald F Levant

This study tested a theoretical model of one mediator and four moderators of the relationships between two masculinity variables (Traditional Masculinity Ideology and Gender Role Conflict) and Attitudes toward Seeking Professional Psychological Services (Attitudes). Self-stigma was the hypothesized mediator and the hypothesized moderators were: 1) Depression, 2) General Self-efficacy, 3) Precontemplation, and 4) Barriers to Help-Seeking. A sample of 654 men responded to an online survey of 9 questionnaires. After evaluating mediation in the absence of moderation, moderated path analyses were conducted for each moderator. The relationship between Traditional Masculinity Ideology and Attitudes was partially mediated by Self-stigma, whereas that …
