Fertility Desires Among Hiv-Infected Men And Women In Los Angeles County: Client Needs And Provider Perspectives, Sebastian Linnemayr, Deborah Mindry, Glenn Wagner, Jordan Lake, Amber Smith, Molly Quinn, Risa Hoffmann

Sebastian Linnemayr

Combination antiretroviral therapy for persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) has extended life expectancy, and enabled PLHA to live productive lives that can include having children. Despite calls to address childbearing for PLHA there has been limited attention to developing safe conception programs. This research sought to assess the childbearing desires of PLHA and the experiences of health care providers serving this population. Research entailed a brief cross-sectional client survey given to HIV-infected men and women over age 18 at two Los Angeles County clinics administered over an 8-week period. Focus group discussions were conducted with providers at each clinic site. …

The Capacity Evaluation Screen – Social Work (Ces-Sw): Development Of A Brief Instrument, Minnhong Lee, Nancy Kropf

Nancy P. Kropf

This study aimed to develop and validate an assessment tool for social workers to screen whether an individual is able to provide consent for involvement in social work programs. The Capacity Evaluation Screen – Social Work (CES-SW) was developed to be a valid and reliable instrument for brief administration. Theoretically, the CES – SW includes the four domains of capacity to consent which are evidencing a choice, understanding, reasoning, and appreciation. Method: Data were obtained from 264 potential clients from six community welfare centers in a metropolitan city in South Korea. Reliability and validity were tested through a series of …

The Effect Of Prospective Payment On Admission And Treatment Policy: Evidence From Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities, Neeraj Sood, Peter Huckfeldt, David Grabowski, Joe Newhouse, Jose Escarce Dec 2012

The Effect Of Prospective Payment On Admission And Treatment Policy: Evidence From Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities, Neeraj Sood, Peter Huckfeldt, David Grabowski, Joe Newhouse, Jose Escarce

Peter J. Huckfeldt

We examine provider responses to the Medicare inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) prospective payment system (PPS), which simultaneously reduced marginal reimbursement and increased average reimbursement. IRFs could respond to the PPS by changing the number of patients admitted, admitting different types of patients, or changing the intensity of care. We use Medicare claims data to separately estimate each type of provider response. We also examine changes in patient outcomes and spillover effects on other post-acute care providers. We find that costs of care initially fell following the PPS, which we attribute to changes in treatment decisions rather than the characteristics of …

The Effects Of Somatisation, Depression, And Anxiety On Eating Habits Among University Students, Peta Stapleton, Morreen Brunetti

Peta B. Stapleton

While it is known that depression and anxiety are associated with poor eating habits, little is known about the relationship between these common psychological disorders, somatisation and poor eating habits. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of depression, anxiety and somatisation on eating habits across gender. University students (N = 167) participated in the study by completing an internet based survey. No specific gender differences were found for depression, anxiety or eating habits scores. However, females had significantly higher somatisation scores. Higher somatisation scores were significantly positively associated with reported depression, reported anxiety and poorer …

Constructing A Moderate Multiracial Coalition In "America's Most Diverse City": Kevin Johnson And Coalition Politics In Sacramento, Corey Cook Dec 2012

Constructing A Moderate Multiracial Coalition In "America's Most Diverse City": Kevin Johnson And Coalition Politics In Sacramento, Corey Cook

Corey Cook

Purpose - The purpose of this chapter is to contribute to the growing academic literature on "post-racial" African American leadership by exploring the election and reelection of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. Johnson is emblematic of the current generation of young African American leaders: politically moderate, less likely to employ overt racial appeals, and able to assemble a multiethnic political coalition. Design/methodology/approach - This chapter utilizes a combination of semi-structured interviews and multivariate quantitative analysis of an original dataset to reveal both the diversity of the Johnson coalition and the high support for Johnson's candidacy in Sacramento's African American community. Findings …

Lexical-Semantic Representation In Bilingual Aphasia: Findings From Semantic Priming And Cognate Repetition Priming, Samantha Siyambalapitiya, Helen Chenery, David Copland

Helen Chenery

BACKGROUND: While many studies have investigated the nature of language organisation in monolingual speakers with aphasia, our understanding of bilingual aphasia lags far behind. Only a handful of studies have employed on-line psycholinguistic experimental methods to explore the nature of language representation and processing in bilingual speakers with aphasia. Improving our understanding of how language is organised and processed in bilingual speakers with aphasia is central to the development of effective impairment-level language treatments. Cognate/noncognate representation and semantic representation are two key aspects of bilingual language organisation that are yet to be explored in depth in bilingual speakers with aphasia. …

Therapeutic Mentoring: Reducing The Impact Of Trauma For Foster Youth, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

This study utilized secondary data analysis to examine therapeutic mentoring (TM) as a service intervention in helping to reduce trauma symptoms in foster youth. Outcomes were compared for mentored (n = 106) and non-mentored (n = 156) foster youth related to experience and symptoms of trauma. Results showed that mentored youth improved significantly in the reduction of trauma symptoms relative to non-mentored youth, suggesting that TM shows promise as an important treatment intervention for foster youth with trauma experiences.

Doing More With Less: Exploring Batch Processing And Outsourcing In Academic Libraries., Patrick Roth, Jeffrey Daniels

Patrick Roth

Doing more with less is a challenge facing all libraries. Staff sizes are trending down while technical services work load remains the same or is increasing; at the same time, there are new and emerging areas of focus for libraries. Grand Valley State University Libraries have made a commitment to exploring any opportunity to outsource or streamline workflows. Presenters will discuss specific examples that utilize outsourcing opportunities as well as batch processing to keep up with the work demand and benefit the library. Positives and negatives of these experiences will be explored. Factors to be discussed will include cost, staff …

Educational Differences In Healthy Behavior Changes And Adherence Among Middle-Aged Americans, Rachel Margolis Dec 2012

Educational Differences In Healthy Behavior Changes And Adherence Among Middle-Aged Americans, Rachel Margolis

Rachel Margolis

Although the better-educated are more likely to practice healthy behaviors when measured at one point in time, there is no clear evidence regarding whether more educated people are more likely to initiate healthy behavior changes in the face of new chronic conditions and whether they are better able to adhere to these healthy changes, once made. I use data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) (1992-2010) to examine smoking cessation and starting physical activity by educational attainment over an 18-year period among 16,606 respondents ages 50 to 75. The more-educated are the least likely to smoke and most likely …

Jump Processes In The Market For Crude Oil, Neil Wilmot, Charles Mason Dec 2012

Jump Processes In The Market For Crude Oil, Neil Wilmot, Charles Mason

Charles F Mason

In many commodity markets, the arrival of new information leads to unexpectedly rapid changes—or jumps—in commodity prices. Such arrivals suggest the assumption that log-return relatives are normally distributed may hold. Combined with time-varying volatility, the possibility of jumps offers a potential explanation for fat tails in oil price returns. This article investigates the potential presence of jumps and time-varying volatility in the spot price of crude oil and in futures prices. The investigation is carried out over three data frequencies (Monthly, Weekly, Daily), which allows for an investigation of temporal properties. Employing likelihood ratio tests to compare among four stochastic …

Palestinian Refugees, The Nation, And The Shifting Political Landscape, Randa Farah Dec 2012

Palestinian Refugees, The Nation, And The Shifting Political Landscape, Randa Farah

Randa R Farah Dr.

This article briefly examines the historical causes that led to the uprooting of the Palestinians in 1948, who today represent one of the longest and largest refugee situations in contemporary history. It then draws on field research on refugees in Jordan to trace some of the pertinent political and ideological shifts since the Palestinian Nakba. Its emphasis is on refugee camps, approached here as palimpsests refracting different historical periods, which for the purpose of this article are divided into: the Nasserite period in the 1950s and early 1960s, the heyday of the Palestinian national liberation movement, beginning in the mid-1960s, …
