Harry Potter And Issues In International Politics: Provisional Mooc Course Syllabus, Emma R. Norman Dec 2012

Harry Potter And Issues In International Politics: Provisional Mooc Course Syllabus, Emma R. Norman

Emma R. Norman

There are many reasons for taking the Potter books seriously in an academic setting. While using their themes certainly makes studying international political issues a lot of fun, the alternative perspectives they contain can really help us understand several facets of international politics that have, until now, been overlooked. For example, studying international terrorism and state counterterror responses from the perspective of Rowling’s boggarts can help us appreciate the deeper dynamics of group interaction and their relation to fear of the ‘other’ than more conventional theories and approaches do. In this online course, your four House professors will show how …

The Google Online Marketing Challenge And Distributed Learning, Ron T. Brown, Kendra S. Albright Dec 2012

The Google Online Marketing Challenge And Distributed Learning, Ron T. Brown, Kendra S. Albright

Ron T. Brown

Stagnant perceptions continue to persist in the general public regarding the services libraries offer. LIS research suggests an increased need for marketing, yet LIS programs and students may not view marketing as core to the degree. The Google Online Market- ing Challenge (GOMC), a global competition for online marketing, was incorporated into two LIS courses to build skills in project management, industry analysis, marketing, and search engine optimization. A qualitative analysis was conducted to investigate whether they perceived the marketing project as relevant to their courses and degrees. A model was created to represent the factors that had an impact …

A Study On The Suitability Of Cable Models To Simulate Switching Transients In A 132 Kv Underground Cable, Muhamad Zalani Daud, P Ciufo, S Perera Dec 2012

A Study On The Suitability Of Cable Models To Simulate Switching Transients In A 132 Kv Underground Cable, Muhamad Zalani Daud, P Ciufo, S Perera

Dr Philip Ciufo

Switching transients resulting from the energisation of high voltage cable systems may have a significant effect on both the cables being switched as well as the power system components in the vicinity. The impacts of these transients on such cables are measured based on the stress arising as a result of the voltage and current peaks and the frequency of oscillatory transients. These quantities are typically obtained from a simulation by using a suitable cable model, normally with the capability to predict the transient behaviour in the range up to several 10 kHz. To obtain a cable model that enables …

Comparative Study Of Determinants Of Food Security In Rural And Urban Households In Ashanti Region, Ghana, Stephen Frimpong, Samuel Asuming-Brempong Dec 2012

Comparative Study Of Determinants Of Food Security In Rural And Urban Households In Ashanti Region, Ghana, Stephen Frimpong, Samuel Asuming-Brempong

Stephen Frimpong

This study assessed determinants of food security in rural and urban households of Ashanti Region of Ghana using a Tobit regression model. The significant determinants of food security in rural households were household size, expenditure on food, access to credit, total own production, remittances, number of income generating activities and land endowment. Similarly, household size, migration, per capita food expenditure; own production and land endowment were the significant determinants of food security in urban households. The Chow coefficient test was used to test for equality of coefficients. The results showed that significant differences exist between the magnitudes of the determinants …

Evidence On Electricity Market Reforms: Divestiture, Price Regulation, And The Use Of Nuclear Power, Daniel H. Karney Dec 2012

Evidence On Electricity Market Reforms: Divestiture, Price Regulation, And The Use Of Nuclear Power, Daniel H. Karney

Daniel H Karney

When evaluating reforms in wholesale electricity markets, two important and related issues are unit divestiture and price deregulation. This paper has two main contributions to the literature regarding the impact of such reforms. First, I build on Davis and Wolfram (2012) by adding a price deregulation measure in addition to their unit divestiture measure, when looking for output-level efficiency gains at U.S. nuclear generating units (NGUs) using monthly data. Second, I construct and use a unique dataset to measure the effect of price deregulation on maintenance outages at U.S. NGUs using daily data. Theory suggests that price deregulation leads NGUs …

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne E. Zentz, Kimberly J. Whalen Dec 2012

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne E. Zentz, Kimberly J. Whalen

Suzanne E Zentz, DNP, RN, CNE

Background

An expectation of baccalaureate nursing education is to prepare nurses to implement evidenced-based practice (EBP). This expectation extends far beyond a basic understanding of the research process. BSN prepared nurses must be able to effectively and efficiently identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence (AACN, 2008). The acquisition of information literacy skills is foundational to the development of EBP.

Implementation

The study took place at a College of Nursing within a mid-sized, faith-based university located in the Midwest. Historically, students enrolled in their senior level undergraduate nursing research/EBP course underwent one library instruction session with the nursing librarian to reinforce search …

Voting Power, Policy Representation, And Disparities In Voting’S Rewards, Brian Newman, John D. Griffin Dec 2012

Voting Power, Policy Representation, And Disparities In Voting’S Rewards, Brian Newman, John D. Griffin

Brian Newman

Reelection-minded officials have motivations to represent some of their constituents more than others when casting roll-call votes. In particular, reelection seekers have incentives to appeal to those with greater “voting power” (Bartels 1998): those who are likely to vote, are not strongly predisposed to vote for one of the parties, and are members of large groups within a particular constituency. We present two novel findings stemming from these incentives. First, we find that those with greater voting power tend to enjoy better policy representation. Second, the rewards of voting are greater for those belonging to groups with more voting power. …

Gestalt Of A Group, Rodger E. Broome Phd Dec 2012

Gestalt Of A Group, Rodger E. Broome Phd

Rodger E. Broome

In the recent past, we have seen news reports in the media regarding police response to group activities like the Occupy Movement. Protests are often couched by their participants as Gandhi-Style ordeals and, by purpose and intention, perhaps that is their original design. The peaceful protesters that desire to sit-in merely to be present or be a bother also become the prey of some of the bad elements in society. So they legitimately need police protection. On the other hand, there are also those who may arrive or are in the design, to incite the crowd to commit acts of …

Publisher Support For Self-Archiving: Laudatory Or Predatory?, Denise Troll Covey

Denise Troll Covey

Most publishers with self-archiving policies in the SHERPA RoMEO database allow authors to deposit their articles in a repository or post them to a website – supporting the green route to open access. Nevertheless, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) enthusiastically endorsed legislation proposed and defeated twice in the United States to prohibit federal agencies from mandating repository deposits of articles reporting on research they funded. The AAP also endorsed the Finch Report issued in the United Kingdom. The Report denigrated repository deposits and elevated open access publishing – the gold route to open access – as the preferred path …

Forced Transnationalism: Transnational Coping Strategies And Gendered Stigma Among Jamaican Deportees, Tanya Golash-Boza Dec 2012

Forced Transnationalism: Transnational Coping Strategies And Gendered Stigma Among Jamaican Deportees, Tanya Golash-Boza

tanya golash-boza

Once forcibly returned to their countries of citizenship, how and why do deportees engage in transnational relationships? Through analyses of 37 interviews with Jamaican deportees, I approach the question of why deportees engage in transnational practices and reveal that deportees use transnational ties as coping strategies to deal with financial and emotional hardship. This reliance on transnational ties, however, has two consequences: (1) male deportees who rely on transnational strategies to survive face a gendered stigma because they must relinquish the provider role and become dependants; and (2) the transnational coping strategies serve as a reminder of the shame, isolation …

The Effect Of Local Labor Demand Conditions On The Labor Supply Outcomes Of Older Americans, Nicole Maestas, Kathleen J. Mullen, David Powell Dec 2012

The Effect Of Local Labor Demand Conditions On The Labor Supply Outcomes Of Older Americans, Nicole Maestas, Kathleen J. Mullen, David Powell

David Powell

A vast literature in labor economics has studied the relationship between local labor demand shifts and the outcomes of the working age population. This literature has ignored the impacts that these shocks have on older individuals, though there are reasons to believe that the effects are not uniform by age. Using data from the Census and the Health and Retirement Study, we measure the effects of local labor demand conditions on a host of outcomes for older individuals including employment, retirement, Social Security claiming, wages, and job characteristics. We find that local labor demand conditions do affect the labor and …

Does Education Matter For Economic Growth?, Michael Delgado, Daniel J. Henderson, Christopher Parmeter Dec 2012

Does Education Matter For Economic Growth?, Michael Delgado, Daniel J. Henderson, Christopher Parmeter

Christopher F. Parmeter

Empirical economic research typically uses education as a proxy for human capital. However, research aimed at validating the inclusion of education measures in growth regressions has yet to reach a consensus, often finding that the sign and significance of education depends on the sample of observations or the specification of the model. The goal of this paper is to reconcile the conflicting empirical evidence and validate (or invalidate) the inclusion of education in international growth regressions by providing a rigorous and systematic search for significance of education. Using methods which are largely immune to model misspecification, we examine six of …

Social Media Networks And Tactical Globalization: An Exploratory Case Study Of Contesting Political "Space" In Singapore, Vicente C. Reyes Jr Dec 2012

Social Media Networks And Tactical Globalization: An Exploratory Case Study Of Contesting Political "Space" In Singapore, Vicente C. Reyes Jr

Dr. Vicente C Reyes Jr

This exploratory article attempts to interrogate the emerging responses of the traditionally powerful Singaporean city-state as it is confronted by the upsurge of social media networks. This inquiry is premised on the assertion that Singapore’s city-state, historically dominated by the People’s Action Party (pap), acts as an overall enforcer by employing tactical globalization. In its drive towards development and nation-building, the city-state has identified protecting social cohesion among its diverse and multicultural population as one of its key vulnerabilities. Globalization, particularly heralded by the increasingly unpredictable electronic media, is anathema to the ethos of a city-state that leaves nothing to …

A Zero Inefficiency Stochastic Frontier Estimator, Subal C. Kumbhakar, Christopher Parmeter, Efthymios G. Tsionas Dec 2012

A Zero Inefficiency Stochastic Frontier Estimator, Subal C. Kumbhakar, Christopher Parmeter, Efthymios G. Tsionas

Christopher F. Parmeter

Traditional stochastic frontier models impose inefficient behavior on all firms in the sample of interest. If the data under investigation represent a mixture of both fully efficient and inefficient firms then off-the-shelf frontier models are statistically inadequate. We introduce a zero-inflated stochastic frontier model which can accommodate the presence of both efficient and inefficient firms in the sample. We derive the corresponding log-likelihood function, conditional mean of inefficiency to estimate observation-specific inefficiency and discuss testing for the presence of fully efficient firms. We provide both simulated evidence as well as an empirical example which demonstrates the applicability of the proposed …
