The Sermon Content Review, Volume 2, Number 6, Daniel Roland
Daniel Roland
The Sermon Content Review (SCR) is a bi-monthly publication of the Center for the Study of Information and Religion (CSIR) at Kent State University. The focus of SCR is on the social construction of religious knowledge and the influence of sermons in that process. Its purpose is to provide a snapshot sampling of the topics, issues, and events currently being addressed from pulpits around the country; to document the terminology, scripture texts, and information resources used; and, to discover early indicators, emerging trends, and research questions conducive for advancing the study of information and religion. The sermon texts used for …

Natural Born Peacemakers? Gender And The Resolution Of Conflict, Mara Olekalns
Natural Born Peacemakers? Gender And The Resolution Of Conflict, Mara Olekalns
Mara Olekalns
Two males sit apart, staring at each other from the corners of their eyes. A female approaches one and takes him by the arm, pulls him towards the other male. She alternates between the two and eventually brokers peace. In a different scenario, two males are again in conflict. A third male inserts himself between them, screaming at them or physically separating them to prevent the conflict from escalating. He keeps them separate and harangues them into submission (De Waal, 2009). Female as peacemaker, male as peacekeeper. These examples fit with our intuitions about how gender might shape the way …

Virtual Reference And In-Depth Assistance Using Shared Workspaces, David Stern
David Stern
The article describes the use of shared workspace to manipulate multiple media materials and demonstrate more sophisticated search methods that facilitate mastery of more advanced tools and techniques. It cites the availability of free reliable cross-platform options with tools that enhance remote reference services via interactive media. It indicates that shared workspace collaboration tools that enhance interaction options help alleviate the frustrations of librarians and researchers alike.
Global Reuse And Optimal Waste Policy, Thomas C. Kinnaman
Global Reuse And Optimal Waste Policy, Thomas C. Kinnaman
Thomas C. Kinnaman
Electronic waste generated from the consumption of durable goods in developed countries is often exported to underdeveloped countries for reuse, recycling, and disposal with unfortunate environmental consequences. The lack of efficient disposal policies within developing nations coupled with global free trade agreements make it difficult for consumers to internalize these costs. This paper develops a two-country model, one economically developed and the other under-developed, to solve for optimal tax policies necessary to achieve the efficient allocation of economic resources in an economy with a durable good available for global reuse without policy measures in the underdeveloped country. A tax in …
Peer Effects And Early Sexual Initiation For African-American Adolescents, Olugbenga Ajilore
Peer Effects And Early Sexual Initiation For African-American Adolescents, Olugbenga Ajilore
Olugbenga Ajilore
Adolescent risky sexual behavior is serious problem that plagues the African-American population more than other ethnic groups. African-American males are more likely to be sexually active, have multiple partners, and have a higher incidence of sexually-transmitted diseases. This paper explores the role of peer effects on early sexual initiation for African-American youth. Most studies analyzing peer influences ignore the “reflection” problem that occurs with studying peer effects. One method of solving this problem is through the use of spatial econometrics. This study contributes to literature on adolescent risky sexual behavior by using a generalized spatial autoregressive approach to model peer …
Examining The Links Between Therapeutic Jurisprudence And Mental Health Court Completion, Allison D. Redlich, Woojae Han
Examining The Links Between Therapeutic Jurisprudence And Mental Health Court Completion, Allison D. Redlich, Woojae Han
Woojae Han
Research demonstrates that mental health courts (MHCs) lead to improved outcomes compared to traditional criminal court processes. An underlying premise of MHCs is therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ). However, no research, to our knowledge, has examined whether MHC outcomes are predicted by TJ principles as theorized. In the present study, we examined whether principles measured at the onset of MHC enrollment (knowledge, perceived voluntariness, and procedural justice) predicted MHC completion (graduation). Using structural equation modeling with MHC participants from four courts, a significant, direct relationship between TJ and MHC completion was found, such that higher levels of TJ were associated with higher …

Powerup!: A Tool For Calculating Minimum Detectable Effect Sizes And Minimum Required Sample Sizes For Experimental And Quasi-Experimental Designs, Nianbo Dong, Rebecca A. Maynard
REBECCA A MAYNARD
This paper complements existing power analysis tools by offering tools to compute minimum detectable effect sizes (MDES) for existing studies and to estimate minimum required sample sizes (MRSS) for studies under design. The tools that accompany this paper support estimates of MDES or MSSR for 21 different study designs that include 14 random assignment designs (6 designs in which individuals are randomly assigned to treatment or control condition and 8 in which clusters of individuals are randomly assigned to condition, with models differing depending on whether the sample was blocked prior to random assignment and by whether the analytic models …

Independent Living Oldest-Old And Their Primary Health Provider: A Mixed Method Examination Of The Influence Of Patient Personality Characteristics, Lee Stadtlander, Martha Giles, Amy Sickel, Emma Brooks, Cherri Brown, Lara Ewing, Pamela Parker, Shawna Stoneking
Lee Stadtlander
This convergent mixed methods study examined 35 healthy, independent living individuals' (over 85 years) perceptions of their relationship with their primary health provider (PHP) and health practices. The relationship between PHP relationship perceptions and locus of control (LOC), resilience, and self-efficacy was explored through surveys and interviews. The majority indicated they visited their PHP just for preventative care; the number of PHP visits per year was significantly lower than reported for individuals over 85 by the CDC, possible reasons for this finding are provided. A positive relationship between LOC, resiliency, and self-efficacy for the oldest-old was found. Few participants indicated …

Selloffs, Bailouts, And Feedback: Can Asset Markets Inform Policy?, Raphael Boleslavsky, David L. Kelly, Curtis R. Taylor
Selloffs, Bailouts, And Feedback: Can Asset Markets Inform Policy?, Raphael Boleslavsky, David L. Kelly, Curtis R. Taylor
Raphael Boleslavsky
We present a model in which a policymaker observes trade in a financial asset before deciding whether to intervene in the economy, for example by offering a bailout or monetary stimulus. Because an intervention erodes the value of private information, informed investors are reluctant to take short positions and selloffs are, therefore, less likely and less informative. The policymaker faces a tradeoff between eliciting information from the asset market and using the information so obtained. In general she can elicit more information if she commits to intervene only infrequently. She thus may benefit from imperfections in the intervention process or …

Overcoming Writer's Block And Procrastination For Attorneys, Law Students, And Law Professors, Meehan Rasch
Meehan Rasch
Law is a particularly writing-heavy profession. However, lawyers, law students, and law professors often struggle with initiating, sustaining, and completing legal writing projects. Even the most competent legal professionals experience periods in which the written word just does not flow freely. This article provides a guide for legal writers who are seeking to understand and resolve writing blocks, procrastination, and other common writing productivity problems.

Understanding The Cycle Of Procrastination, Meehan Rasch
Meehan Rasch
Procrastination is one of the enduring challenges of human existence, as well as one of the chief problems with which law students struggle. Understanding the cycle of procrastination can help law professors and advisors more constructively address students’ issues in this area—not to mention our own.
Alcohol Use Predicts Sexual Risk Behavior With Hiv-Negative Or Partners Of Unknown Status Among Young Hiv-Positive Men Who Have Sex With Men, Douglas Bruce
Douglas Bruce
Although the relationship between substance use and heightened sexual risk behaviors have been documented in samples of young men who have sex with men (YMSM) and HIV-positive adult men who have sex with men (MSM), there is a dearth of research on the role of substance use in the sexual risk behaviors of HIV-positive YMSM. We examined associations between alcohol and other drug use with sexual risk behaviors among a sample of HIV-positive YMSM. There were no significant predictors of either receptive or insertive unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with HIV-positive partners among the substance use variables. Failure to use a …
Improving Engagement By Creating A Peer Environment, Tammy Stitz
Improving Engagement By Creating A Peer Environment, Tammy Stitz

It is well documented in literature that engineering students seek information by asking their peers before seeking information from other sources, such as asking a professor or performing a literature search. Social networking and other technologies, such as short message service, instant messaging, and even e-mail can be used to foster a peer type of relationship between educators and students. An online student survey can be used for this purpose as well. Assessment of library instruction sessions is important to ensure that students are learning what is intended. Surveying students can ensure instructional relevancy, reveal missing lecture information, and highlight …

Opening The Dissertation: Overcoming Cultural Calcification And Agoraphobia, Denise Troll Covey
Denise Troll Covey
This article places the struggle to open access to the dissertation in the context of the crisis in doctoral education and the transition from print to digital literacy. It explores the underlying cultural calcification and agoraphobia that deter engagement with openness. Solving the problems will require overhauling the curriculum and conventions of doctoral education. Opening access to dissertations is an important first step, but insufficient to end the crisis. Only opening other dimensions of the dissertation -- the structure, media, notion of authorship, and methods of assessment -- can foster the digital literacy needed to save PhD programs from extinction. …

Regarding Reference In An Academic Library: Does The Desk Make A Difference?, Patricia Bravender, Hazel Mcclure
Regarding Reference In An Academic Library: Does The Desk Make A Difference?, Patricia Bravender, Hazel Mcclure
Patricia Bravender
Some academic libraries are consolidating their circulation and reference desks into single service points. The librarians at one academic library undertook a study to determine if such a consolidation would affect their reference service. They analyzed the number and type of questions asked during times when a librarian was physically present at the reference desk and compared it to the number and type of questions asked when a librarian was "on call" (not present at the desk, but available to be called to the service desk to answer reference questions) over a period of seven academic semesters. This article reports …

Consuming Nature: Mass Media And The Cultural Politics Of Animals And Environments, Carrie Packwood Freeman, Jason Jarvis
Carrie P. Freeman
The commercially-driven mass media package human identity and all our surrounding environment for daily consumption in the public sphere. It is of critical importance whether media choose to ignore humanity’s responsibility toward the natural world and simply have us consume it as a product, or whether they actively cultivate ecological responsibility and newfound respect toward animals as fellow sentient beings. This chapter explores the necessity, potential, and challenges of relying on the media (journalism, television, advertising, film, radio, internet, etc.) to inspire the social change needed to reverse the destructive behaviors and beliefs that are contributing to our global ecological …
The Inescapable Ocean: On Understanding Australia's Strategic Geography, Chris Rahman
The Inescapable Ocean: On Understanding Australia's Strategic Geography, Chris Rahman
Chris Rahman
The development of a distinct maritime school of strategic thought for Australia is an important initiative by the current Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, RAN. Griggs has explicitly attempted to surmount the intellectual obstacle posed by an increasingly sterile defence debate that has witnessed the growth of an expeditionary school of strategic thought as a counter to the longstanding continental school, dominant in Australian policy since 1986. Instead, Griggs has rejected the ‘binary’ approach of this debate to suggest an alternative, maritime, school.1 In so doing it is essential to pay due consideration to Australia’s strategic geography. The …

Debatendo A Política De Imigração Europeia: Perspectivas Para Liberalização Da Imigração De Terceiros A Ue (Debating European Union Immigration: Policy: Prospects For Third Party Immigration Liberalization), Gaspare M. Genna
Gaspare M Genna
This paper assesses the likelihood of developing an European Union level immigration control policy and the liberalization of third party immigration by using hypotheses developed from social identity theory. Through an analysis of Eurobarometer data collected in 2000, I confirm prior work which indicates that support for an EU level policy is more likely if individuals hold an EUropean identity. However intergroup competition (EU citizens vs. third party immigration) will lower the likelihood, even among European identity holders. Also the belief that an EU level policy would liberalize third party immigration also lowers the likelihood of supporting such a policy. …

This report makes transparent racial inequities in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big East Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac 12 Conference, and the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Data from the NCAA and the U.S. Department of Education are presented for the 76 institutional members of these six athletic conferences. Specifically, the authors offer a four-year analysis of Black men’s representation on football and basketball teams versus their representation in the undergraduate student body on each campus. They also compare Black male student-athletes’ six-year graduation rates (across four cohorts) to student-athletes overall, undergraduate students overall, and Black undergraduate men …
