Well-Being And Health Considerations For The Aging Lesbian Community: Understanding Age Cohorts, Partnerships And Caregiving Among Other Unique Needs, Michael Dentato, Shelley Craig, Lauren Mcinroy Dec 2013

Well-Being And Health Considerations For The Aging Lesbian Community: Understanding Age Cohorts, Partnerships And Caregiving Among Other Unique Needs, Michael Dentato, Shelley Craig, Lauren Mcinroy

Michael P. Dentato, PhD, MSW

Effectively exploring the well-being, health and mental health needs of the aging lesbian community can often be difficult and multi-leveled, while insuring a competent and comprehensive assessment of needs.  A limited amount of research has specifically attended to the lives and unique experiences of aging lesbians, along with those of the larger LGBT community, therefore such matters remain poorly understood.  Regardless, insuring any dialogue surrounding the needs of older lesbians must underscore their resilience - which for many has included becoming actively engaged as advocates for visibility and change - especially during the late 1960s and Stonewall Inn revolution, as …

The Color Of Christ In Haiti, Elizabeth Mcalister Dec 2013

The Color Of Christ In Haiti, Elizabeth Mcalister

Elizabeth McAlister

Haiti is an officially Roman Catholic country, and the popular religion
of Vodou incorporates many Catholic elements. Why, then, is Jesus
Christ relatively deemphasized in both traditions, while Mary and
the countless saints and spirits have a greater presence in the religious
lives of most Haitians? This article delves into the Roman Catholic
and Kongolese Catholic history of Haiti to explore why Jesus Christ
is a relatively remote figure and why he is represented as white in a
Black-majority country.

Beyond Nature Appropriation: Towards Post-Development Conservation In The Maya Forest, Jose Martinez-Reyes Dec 2013

Beyond Nature Appropriation: Towards Post-Development Conservation In The Maya Forest, Jose Martinez-Reyes

Jose E. Martinez-Reyes

The establishment of biosphere reserves in Mexico was followed by alternative livelihood conservation/development projects to integrate indigenous groups into Western style conservation under the idea of sustainable development and participation. In this paper, I discuss the outcomes of two forest wildlife management projects in one Maya community along the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve in the state of Quintana Roo. Both projects ultimately failed and the community mobilised and expelled the NGO from the community. I argue that the failure of these projects involved two dynamics: 1) lack of coherence between the objectives of state agencies, conservation NGOs, and the local …
