College Students' Relationship With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Learning Accommodations At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Brianna Danehey, Kim Hansen Dr., Chelsea Witt Dr.
Honors Theses
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can provide many challenges for college students due to difficulties focusing, multi-tasking, and staying organized. Colleges are required to offer academic accommodations to students with disabilities in an attempt to provide students with an equitable learning environment. However, accommodations may be ineffective if they are highly unattainable, unused by the student once granted, or hindered by university faculty.
The objective of this study was to identify barriers to receiving effective and beneficial academic accommodations for individuals with ADHD at the University level and to provide insight into college students' knowledge and relationships relating to the …

L2 Writer Identity Construction In Academic Written Discourse: A Multi-Case Study, Beibei Ren
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Writer identity has gradually become a focus in writing scholarship in recent years. From a social constructivist lens, writer identity is not optional; it resides in all texts. And it is a construct that does not exist in a vacuum, but is shaped by the sociocultural and academic context, and simultaneously individual writers agentively selected from the socially available repertoire to construct their identities in text. Departing from social constructivism, this study adopted Ivanic’s (1998) conceptualization of writer identity, which consists of autobiographical self, discoursal self, self as author and possibilities for selfhood, and highlighted the role of agency in …

Exploring Generational Trauma, Delanie Patterson, Brooke Mann, Will Stutterheim
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Generational trauma is still a relatively new field of study that has gained immense popularity with various researchers and the rest of society. There are several contributing factors to generational trauma being explored and examined so researchers can reduce the effects on both parents and offspring. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] (2021) describes Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) as trauma or a significant stressor that occurs during childhood, and trauma in itself significantly impacts families and individual functioning. It is essential to continue the research on generational trauma to help families create a healthier living environment and a better …

Rural Working-Age Adults Report More Cost Barriers To Health Care, Erika C. Ziller Phd, Carly Milkowski Mph, Amanda Burgess Mppm, Mph
Access / Insurance
Using the 2019-2020 National Health Insurance Survey, researchers at the Maine Rural Health Research Center examined rural-urban differences in affordability of care and cost-saving strategies among working-age adults. Rural adults (18-64) were more likely than their urban counterparts to report problems paying, or being unable to pay, their medical bills. They were also more likely to delay or go without needed care because of the cost. Compared with urban adults, those in rural areas were more likely to engage in prescription drug cost-saving measures such as skipping doses, delaying refills, or taking less medication than prescribed. For all affordability measures, …

“We're Not Thriving, But We're Trying.” Exploring Undergraduate Students' Resilience During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kelly Smith
Social Work Doctoral Dissertations
Undergraduate college students found their lives upended when Covid-19 pandemic mitigation efforts mandated them to leave their school settings and continue their education on virtual platforms. Research on the pandemic and related mitigation efforts has found undergraduate students to be negatively impacted. Today’s undergraduate students are primarily made up of Generation Z who are identified as having a higher reported incidence of mental health issues and have been described as less resilient when compared to other generations. Resilience is integral to undergraduate students’ mental health and educational persistence. This study sought to explore the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on …
Who Goes And Who Stays: Predicting Hurricane Evacuation For Local Neighborhoods, Shakhawat Hosen Tanim
Who Goes And Who Stays: Predicting Hurricane Evacuation For Local Neighborhoods, Shakhawat Hosen Tanim
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
To reduce the devastating impacts of hurricanes on people’s lives, communities, and societal infrastructures, disaster management would benefit considerably from a detailed understanding of evacuation, including the socio-demographics of the populations that evacuate, or stay, down to disaggregated geographic levels such as neighborhoods. A detailed household evacuation prediction model for local neighborhoods requires both a robust household evacuation decision model and individual household data for small geographic units. To address the first of these, this dissertation performed a statistical meta-analysis of numerous survey-based hurricane evacuation studies to establish mean effect sizes for predictors impacting the household decision. To address the …

Paper, Papermaking & The History Of Libraries, Patrick F. Roughen Jr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article traces the history of the relationship of papermaking and paper to libraries over time. Paper was first made in China and is traditionally considered one of that nation’s four greatest inventions, along with gun powder, printing, and the compass. Papermaking was often associated with archives in its early development in China, as well as when it was introduced to Japan, where it came to be a part of some Shinto and Buddhist temples, and later governmental agencies. Under Islam, the availability of paper was linked to increased literacy and growth of libraries. In early modern Europe, before the …

Social practice theory offers a multidisciplinary perspective on the relationship between infrastructure and wellbeing. One prominent model in practice theory frames systems of provision as the rules, resources, and structures that enable the organization of social practices, encompassing both material and immaterial aspects of infrastructures. A second well-known model frames social practices in terms of their constituent elements: meanings, materials, and competences. Reconciling these two models, we argue that household capacity to respond to shifting systems of provision to maintain wellbeing is profoundly tied to the dynamics of privilege and inequity. To examine these dynamics, we propose a new analytical …

The purpose of this article is to study the vulnerability of groundwater to pollution of the Gharb aquifer using the Drastic model, depending on the hydrological characteristics of the area regardless of the type of polluter, which can be used for the future planning, and take procedures that limit groundwater pollution from surface activities. The Gharb water table is an important source of drinking and irrigation water in the Gharb plain. Population growth and industrial and agricultural activities have resulted in the effects of contaminated materials contributing to the degradation of water quality. The results showed a vulnerability of groundwater …

When we talk about mobility, we are talking about both a change of place, position and a change of state of the actor, hence two dimensions of mobility: one spatial and the other social, we also note that this diversity of meanings depends on the disciplinary position from which the “mobility-change” question is approached, hence the importance of an interdisciplinary and integrating approach to this phenomenon, in order to be able to apprehend these various dimensions. In this article, we will first follow the historical development of research on mobility, then we will analyze the relationship between these two dimensions, …

This presentation offers a window into the progress and changes made as a part of the 5-year research-practice collaboration funded by the E.M. Ewing Kauffman Foundation exploring the strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in three major entrepreneurial ecosystems across Ohio- Cleveland, Toledo, and Dayton. This project's heavy reliance on collaboration with service providers was complicated by the ecosystem’s immediate responses to the economic duress of the pandemic and the influx of new entrepreneurs and capital. Like how these ecosystems responded, the project team adjusted by reframing this study as a deep dive into how entrepreneurial ecosystems grow and change to best …

The Black Performer's Toolbox: A Critical Authoethnography, Laura D. Oliver
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Blackness shines bright like the moon and beams outside of identity parameters that are limiting in Western society to determine its communicative function inside and outside systems of power. When Blackness intersects with performance, various ways to construct identity are highlighted to expand our understanding of theory and methods that emphasize difference and culture. This research project aims to reimagine Blackness as a performance methodology to explore the performer’s livelihood onstage and constructions of race that impact identity offstage. Additionally, this project is built from a specific method created from the continuous use of expressive work that reflects societal challenges …

The Association Between Vigorous Physical Activity And Alcohol Use, Christina James, Emily Junkin, Cathy Lau-Barraco
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Evidence supports a positive association between excessive exercise and alcohol use among young adults. Past research has looked at the effects of medium-intensity physical activity regarding alcohol use prevention among college students, suggesting a positive linear association between these two variables. However, prior research has primarily focused on men. Thus, questions regarding health-compromising behaviors, such as excessive drinking and exercise among women, remain to be investigated. Further, questions have been raised concerning the pattern of association between vigorous physical activity and alcohol use among men versus women. The present study aims to replicate prior research by evaluating (1) the association …

Development And Sociology In The Philippines: Focusing On The Inclusive And Exclusive Development, Leslie Advincula-Lopez, Mai Yoshida
Development Studies Faculty Publications
This paper examines the relationship between development and sociological research in the Philippines. Development is an invariably important issue in Philippine sociology. Philippine sociology was established in the context of postwar reconstruction and modernization policies under the leadership of sociologists trained in the United States. In this historical and political context; sociologists put effort into practical case studies by focusing on the lives of rural and urban residents. Sociological analysis plays an essential role in national development planning. The Filipino word for “development” is pag-unlad, meaning to advance or develop. It includes “social development,” or eliminating social and political disparities …

Does Gender Moderate The Relationship Between Surface Acting And Burnout?, Cynthia Kennedy
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Burnout occurs when the workplace has chronic emotional and interpersonal stressors that trigger emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and feelings of incompetence. There is a gap in burnout literature on how experiences, systemic expectations, and coping behaviors differ between females and males. Previous research suggests that comparable behaviors in male and female employees elicit different reactions from their peers. As a result, attributes such as assertiveness, generally perceived as powerful for males, are seen as abrasive for females. This mindset creates an environment where females act in a way that society expects them to remain credible. Surface acting involves the regulation of …
