An adapted version of the 9-item Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS) was administered
to Black females ( N = 179) ages 11 to 14 years. Comparison between
body composition (BMI) and social physique anxiety (SPA) indicated greatest
SPA in overweight/obese participants. No change over age was observed. In
comparison to previous data for a White sample, these Black early adolescent
females evidenced somewhat lower social physique anxiety than the White females.
The lower SPA supports the hypothesis that Black females are more accepting
of a larger physique in early adolescence. Factor analysis supported a
substantitive/non-substantitive two-factor model for the SPAS-C.

Incest Taboos And Kinship: A Biological Or A Cultural Story?, Dwight W. Read Dec 2013

Incest Taboos And Kinship: A Biological Or A Cultural Story?, Dwight W. Read

Dwight W Read

In most, if not all, societies, incest taboos -- perhaps the most universal of cultural taboos --
include prohibitions on marriage between parent and child or between siblings. This
universality suggests a biological origin, yet the considerable variation across societies in
the full range of prohibited marriage relations implies a cultural origin. Correspondingly,
theories regarding the origin of incest taboos vary from those that focus on the biological
consequences were marriage-based procreation allowed to include inbred matings, to those
that focus on social consequences such as confounding social roles, especially within the
family, or restricting networks of interfamily alliances, were …

Toward Complex And Inclusive Studies Of Sex Scripts, College Students’ Sexual Behaviors, And Hookup Cultures On U.S. Campuses, Collin D. Williams Jr., Ph.D., Shaun R. Harper Ph.D. Dec 2013

Toward Complex And Inclusive Studies Of Sex Scripts, College Students’ Sexual Behaviors, And Hookup Cultures On U.S. Campuses, Collin D. Williams Jr., Ph.D., Shaun R. Harper Ph.D.

Collin D. Williams, Jr., Ph.D.

Much attention has been devoted in recent years to students “hooking up” on college and university campuses across the United States. Hookups broadly entail sexual behaviors that range from anal and vaginal intercourse to oral sex, masturbation, and other physically pleasurable activities. In this article, we synthesize the literature on college hookup cultures. Specifically, we use sexual scripting theory to analyze and critique existing peer-reviewed studies. Ultimately, we present five themes pertaining to the study of hookup phenomena at U.S. colleges and universities. This article concludes with several recommendations for making future hookup studies more inclusive of undergraduates from a …

Studying Local Representation: A Critical Review, Prakash Kashwan Dec 2013

Studying Local Representation: A Critical Review, Prakash Kashwan

Prakash Kashwan

What does it mean for a government or an authority to be representative? Obviously, when democratic governments rule according to what ‘people/citizens’ desire they can be said to be representative. However, citizens’ expressed desires are shaped by the environment within which they live. In those cases, desires cannot be taken to be the benchmark against which actions of representative governments can be judged. Hence, Przeworski (1999:2 citing Pitkin 1967) defines representation more broadly as ‘acting in the best interest of the public’. The use of the phrase ‘interest of the public’ begs a simple but critical question: Who constitutes as …

Why Scientists Who Study Good And Evil Are Vulnerable To Criticism, Scott T. Allison

Scott T. Allison

Taking the stance that good and evil are in the eye of the beholder makes one vulnerable to criticism. In this way I am in agreement with Roy Baumeister that good and evil are “not strongly tethered to objective reality.”

On The Evolution Of Hoarding, Risk-Taking, And Wealth Distribution In Nonhuman And Human Populations, Ted C. Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper applies the theory of the evolution of risk-taking in the presence of idiosyncratic and environmental risks to the example of food hoarding by animals and explores implications of the resulting theory for human attitudes toward risk.

Grading Standards And Education Quality, Raphael Boleslavsky, Christopher Cotton Dec 2013

Grading Standards And Education Quality, Raphael Boleslavsky, Christopher Cotton

Raphael Boleslavsky

We consider a game in which schools compete to place graduates by investing in education quality and by choosing grading policies. In equilibrium, schools strategically adopt grading policies that do not perfectly reveal graduate ability to evaluators (including employers and graduate schools). We compare equilibrium outcomes when schools grade strategically to equilibrium outcomes when evaluators perfectly observe graduate ability. With strategic grading, grades are less informative, and evaluators rely less on grades and more on a school's quality when assessing graduates. Consequently, under strategic grading, schools have greater incentive to invest in quality, and this can improve evaluator welfare.

Government Economists As ‘Global Economists’”, Giulio M. Gallarotti Dec 2013

Government Economists As ‘Global Economists’”, Giulio M. Gallarotti

Giulio M Gallarotti

With the advent of globalization, economists that serve the U.S. government have had to become more sensitized to the greater internationalization of the challenges facing America's leaders. As this globalized world has turned domestic issues into international issues, the analysis of U.S. government economists has had to concomitantly become more internationalized. Only through such a broad analytical perspective can government economists best understand issues and solve problems in a globalized world.

A Two Sided Carbon Story: Carbon Capture And Storage And Enhanced Oil Recovery, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz, Byung-Cheol Kim Dec 2013

A Two Sided Carbon Story: Carbon Capture And Storage And Enhanced Oil Recovery, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz, Byung-Cheol Kim

Juan B. Moreno-Cruz

We study the effects of a carbon emission tax on the interaction between carbon capture and storage (CCS) and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). We consider a CO2 market where CCS firms sell their CO2 to EOR firms that use this CO2 as an input to their production process. In this economic environment, we find that the effectiveness of a carbon tax may be hampered. A carbon tax shifts out the supply curve of CO2 leading to a decline in the market price of CO2. With lower input price, oil firms are indirectly subsidized and oil production and emissions increase. Nonetheless, …

Ship Space To Database: Scientific And Social Motivations For A Database To Support Deep Subseafloor Biosphere Research, Peter Darch, Christine L. Borgman Dec 2013

Ship Space To Database: Scientific And Social Motivations For A Database To Support Deep Subseafloor Biosphere Research, Peter Darch, Christine L. Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

What motivates the building of databases by scientific collaborations? In this paper, we argue that not only are databases being built to support scientific work per se, but also with the intention of performing a variety of social functions. To explore this, we present findings from a longitudinal ethnographic case study of a large, multidisciplinary, distributed scientific project studying subseafloor microbial life. A critical element of this project’s Data Management Plan is the construction of a data portal. We found a range of factors motivating not only the very construction of this portal, but also the inclusion of particular features. …

Finding Meaning In A Restricted Environment, Kent Craig Dec 2013

Finding Meaning In A Restricted Environment, Kent Craig

Kent Craig

Social workers face many ethical and theoretical challenges in their work to improve quality of lives for individuals and work toward a more just and equitable society. One of the most challenging of these dilemmas is how to work within restrictive and authoritarian institutions such as prisons, juvenile detention centers and some mental institutions. This paper will discuss how social workers can provide treatment in settings where barriers to trust, recovery and hope are ever present and in which clients have difficulty identifying meaningful recovery-oriented goals. How do we find meaning in a restricted environment? An important aspect of the …

The Politics Of Transition & The Economics Of Hiv: Aids & Pepfar In South Africa, Matthew M. Kavanagh Dec 2013

The Politics Of Transition & The Economics Of Hiv: Aids & Pepfar In South Africa, Matthew M. Kavanagh

Matthew M. Kavanagh

AIDS poses a unique and unprecedented challenge to South Africa. The country has the largest HIV epidemic in the world—with 6.4 million people living with HIV—and one of the largest TB epidemics in the world as well. The country’s recent AIDS response has generated enormous optimism, both in South Africa and internationally. The biggest change, in many ways, has been political—dramatic shifts in ideology and motivation at the highest levels of government have moved the country from denialism and inaction to a bold national mobilization to bring anti-retroviral treatment to scale. Meanwhile, the approach of the U.S. government has evolved …

Matched And Mismatched Appraisals Of The Effectiveness Of Communication Strategies By Family Caregivers, Marie Y. Savundranayagam, Joseph B. Orange Dec 2013

Matched And Mismatched Appraisals Of The Effectiveness Of Communication Strategies By Family Caregivers, Marie Y. Savundranayagam, Joseph B. Orange

Marie Y. Savundranayagam

Background: Communication problems stemming from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) often result in misunderstandings that can be linked with problem behaviours and increased caregiver stress. Moreover, these communication breakdowns also can result either from caregivers’ use of ineffective communication strategies, which paradoxically are perceived as helpful, or can occur as a result of not using effective communication strategies that are perceived as unhelpful.
Aims: The two primary aims were to determine the effectiveness of strategies used to resolve communication
breakdowns and to examine whether caregivers’ ratings of strategy effectiveness were consistent with evidence from video-recorded conversations and with effective communication strategies documented …

Quid Ais And Female Speech In Roman Comedy (Revised, Pre-Print), Peter G. Barrios-Lech Dec 2013

Quid Ais And Female Speech In Roman Comedy (Revised, Pre-Print), Peter G. Barrios-Lech

Peter Barrios-Lech

ABSTRACT: Quid ais has as its two main functions in Latin to express surprise (“what are you saying?”) and to get the addressee’s attention (“tell me something...”); the latter type has a commanding tone. It is proven that quid ais in Plautus has a decidedly male character; that is, he avoided giving the phrase to women. To explain this finding, it is noted that 91% of instances of quid ais in Plautus are of the second “attention-getting” type. With its imperatival force, this quid ais was probably not felt to be appropriate for Plautus’ female characters whose speech is generally …
