The Geographical Dimension Of The Development Effects Of Natural Resources, Abdur Chowdhury, Fabrizio Carmignani Jul 2014

The Geographical Dimension Of The Development Effects Of Natural Resources, Abdur Chowdhury, Fabrizio Carmignani

Abdur R. Chowdhury

We study the contribution of natural resource intensity to long-term development along different dimensions: per-capita income, institutional quality, and education. We allow natural resources to affect these dimensions differently in different regions of the world. The evidence suggests that natural resources are generally a positive driver of development, but in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) their contribution is almost negligible, if not even negative. We explain these cross-regional differences with the fact that in SSA more than anywhere else large resource endowments are combined with a particularly bad disease environment. Some historical evidence and formal econometric results support this hypothesis.

The Relationship Between The Inflation Rate And Its Variability: The Issues Reconsidered, Abdur Chowdhury Jul 2014

The Relationship Between The Inflation Rate And Its Variability: The Issues Reconsidered, Abdur Chowdhury

Abdur R. Chowdhury

This paper empirically reexamines the hypothesis of a positive relationship between the inflation rate and its variability. The sample consists of 66 countries for the 1955–85 sample period. Using pooled cross-section time series data, empirical tests are performed for nine different country-groupings ranging from the G–7 developed countries to a group of 10 developing Asian countries. Several important conclusions can be derived. First, irrespective of the variability measure employed, the results indicate the presence of a significant positive relationship between the inflation rate and its variability. This provides strong support to Okun's hypothesis. Second, this relationship is stronger during the …

An Empirical Test Of The Structure, Conduct-Performance Paradigm In The Asian And Pacific Basin Countries, Abdur Chowdhury Jul 2014

An Empirical Test Of The Structure, Conduct-Performance Paradigm In The Asian And Pacific Basin Countries, Abdur Chowdhury

Abdur R. Chowdhury

This paper tests the structure‐conduct‐performance paradigm in eighteen Asian and Pacific Basin countries. The results suggest that concentration in the banking markets in these countries lead to monopoly profits being earned and is a signal of collusive behaviour among the leading banks. Competitive imperfections allow banks to set prices that are less favourable to consumers thereby decreasing total consumer and producer surplus. This has important policy implications for merger activity. A further increase in concentration in the banking market in these countries will decrease the level of competition in the market. Regulatory actions, such as anti‐trust laws, are justified on …

What Determines Public Education Expenditures In Russia?, Inna Verbina, Abdur Chowdhury Jul 2014

What Determines Public Education Expenditures In Russia?, Inna Verbina, Abdur Chowdhury

Abdur R. Chowdhury

Recent studies suggest that the allocation of expenditures in education is important for growth. The state of public education spending in many transition economies highlights the need for an assessment of the nature of education expenditures in these countries. This paper attempts to fill this gap in the literature by estimating the determinants of education expenditures in the Russian Federation. Results from panel data analysis show that revenue and the student-population ratio have a positive impact on education expenditures while the effect of population density is negative. Three regional variables also show significant impact. The income and price elasticity of …

Univariate Time Series Behavior Of Merger Activity And Its Various Components In The United States, Abdur Chowdhury Jul 2014

Univariate Time Series Behavior Of Merger Activity And Its Various Components In The United States, Abdur Chowdhury

Abdur R. Chowdhury

The paper employs unit-root tests to analyse the time-series properties of merger activity and its various components in the United States during 1973:I-1987: IV. The results indicate that the aggregate merger series is integrated of order one. It contains a large permanent or random-walk component. Economic variables have not succeeded in shifting the merger series other than in a random fashion. However, the time-series properties of the various components of the merger series are not uniform. Horizontal and vertical merger series have unit roots, while the conglomerate merger series is stationary.

The Housing Market, Macroeconomic Activity, And Financial Innovation: An Empirical Analysis Of U.S. Data, Mark Wheeler, Abdur Chowdhury Jul 2014

The Housing Market, Macroeconomic Activity, And Financial Innovation: An Empirical Analysis Of U.S. Data, Mark Wheeler, Abdur Chowdhury

Abdur R. Chowdhury

The relationship between macroeconomic activity and residential expenditure over the period 1959:I to 1991:I has been examined. The analysis is conducted using varriance decompostions (VDCs) and historical decompostions (HDs). The VDCs indicate that shocks to the money stock. Output and interest rates have significant impact on residental expenditure. The HDs indicate that shocks to macroeconomic variable are relatively unimportant in the determination of residential expenditure in the period following the extensive fiancial deregulation in the early 1980s.

Advertising Expenditures And The Macroeconomy: Some Further Evidence, Abdur Chowdhury Jul 2014

Advertising Expenditures And The Macroeconomy: Some Further Evidence, Abdur Chowdhury

Abdur R. Chowdhury

This article reinvestigates the relationship between advertising expenditures and various macro-variables using aggregate data from the United Kingdom. The analysis is based on the recently developed cointegration and causality approach. Unlike Galbraith's 1967 findings, the results fail to show evidence of any relationship between advertising activity and the level of national income, disposable income, and personal consumption expenditures. However, a strong uni-directional causality exists from advertising activity to the unemployment rate. This 'article raises concern about some fundamental issues in the advertising literature, and introduces a new and powerful estimation technique.

(Wp 2013-07) Terms Of Trade Shocks And Private Savings In The Developing Countries, Abdur Chowdhury Jul 2014

(Wp 2013-07) Terms Of Trade Shocks And Private Savings In The Developing Countries, Abdur Chowdhury

Abdur R. Chowdhury

Economic agents in the developing countries are subject to tight credit constraints, which are more pronounced during bad state of nature. Thus, adverse shocks to commodity prices in the world market can force them to reduce savings by a larger amount than they would otherwise have. Empirical analysis using a dynamic GMM model and data from 45 developing countries confirm that most of the determinants of savings identified in the literature also apply to the developing countries. The transitory component in the terms of trade have a larger positive impact than the permanent component. This reflects the lack of access …

Money Demand Stability Under Currency Substitution: Some Recent Evidence, Santi Chaisrisawatsuk, Subhash C. Sharma, Abdur Chowdhury

Abdur R. Chowdhury

This study deals with the issue of independent monetary policy and the stability of the domestic money demand function in the presence of currency substitution and capital mobility in five Asian economies. It is argued that money demand will be less stable and more difficult to control in the presence of international variables. The money demand function is derived using the portfolio balance approach. The results from the cointegration analysis reveal that capital mobility and currency substitution are significant factors in the domestic money demand equations for Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The results also show that the US …

Research Brief: "Preferences For Gender-Targeted Health Information: A Study Of Male Veterans Who Have Experienced Military Sexual Trauma", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about male veterans' preferences for health information provided to them after experiencing military sexual trauma and the effect of that information on use of mental health services. In policy and practice, veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma should seek military sexual trauma care from the VA, health practitioners should learn more about military sexual assault to better help servicemembers, and gender-targeted literature should be distributed to servicemembers who have experienced military sexual trauma; the VHA should include gender-specific resources for male veterans who experienced military sexual trauma. Suggestions for future research include the addition of a …

Using Exploratory Image Searching To Invite Inquiry Into The Student Research Experience, Beth Fuchs Jul 2014

Using Exploratory Image Searching To Invite Inquiry Into The Student Research Experience, Beth Fuchs

Library Presentations

From the student perspective, progress in the research process is made by moving directly from choosing a topic to collecting sources. Developing a focus and identifying interesting questions are often seen as time-wasters and left out of the process entirely, particularly in the case of novice researchers, and yet, research tells us that these are the areas where students tend to struggle the most. How can we introduce students to the idea that before they can find answers, they need to ask questions? This session will introduce the idea of using image searching as a method for helping students who …

"Wake Up The Knowledge That You Have": An Assessment Of Community Food Security In Fellsmere, Florida, Susan Marie Tyler Jul 2014

"Wake Up The Knowledge That You Have": An Assessment Of Community Food Security In Fellsmere, Florida, Susan Marie Tyler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the global industrial agricultural system many people lack access to high-quality nutritious foods and food production techniques are often inefficient and reliant on harsh chemical inputs. While numerous strategies exist to address the disparities present in the global food system, increasingly researchers and practitioners are looking to local food systems for solutions to strengthen community food security (CFS). CFS emphasizes small-scale production strategies such as farmer's markets, community gardens, and consumer supported agriculture. As these efforts evolve, research is needed to understand how these strategies affect communities. To explore a local CFS initiative, qualitative data were collected from community …

Managing Regional Water Resources Amidst Rapid Urbanization In Southwest Florida: A Case Study, Nicole Owusua Caesar Jul 2014

Managing Regional Water Resources Amidst Rapid Urbanization In Southwest Florida: A Case Study, Nicole Owusua Caesar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Experts and organizations involved in freshwater resources management have emphasized the importance of long-term urban resource planning and management that considers the tight coupling which exists between human - nature - technology systems. The resistance of contemporary urban growth efforts to consider resource carrying capacities and ecosystem requirements has led to costly unintended consequences including the deterioration of natural capital and their associated ecosystem services, and the degradation of water resource flows. As these problems continue to worsen, resource experts have called for the development of a new water resource management paradigm inclusive of various sustainability criteria.

Historically water-rich Florida …

Risk Of Compliance: Tracing Safety And Efficacy In Mef-Lariam's Licensure, Julie Marie Gerdes Jul 2014

Risk Of Compliance: Tracing Safety And Efficacy In Mef-Lariam's Licensure, Julie Marie Gerdes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Walter Reed Institute of Army Research developed the antimalarial drug mefloquine then collaborated with Hoffman-La Roche to produce the drug under its brand name "Lariam," after Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved licensure in 1989. For over twenty years, the Army used this pill as its "drug of choice" for soldiers deployed to endemic regions until 2009, and in 2013 the Food and Drug Administration warned that the drug's neurotoxic effects could be lasting, if not permanent. The sociopolitical exigence of developing a new biochemical antimalarial drug rushed the development and licensure processes, and the modern craving for certainty …

The Aca’S Contraceptive Mandate: Religious Freedom, Women’S Health, And Corporate Personhood, Lawrence O. Gostin Jul 2014

The Aca’S Contraceptive Mandate: Religious Freedom, Women’S Health, And Corporate Personhood, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

On June 30 2014 the Supreme Court decided Burwell v Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc, in a deeply divided judgment that engaged religious freedom, women’s health, and corporate personhood. Three closely held for-profit organizations challenged the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive mandate, objecting to four contraceptive methods that they believe acted as abortifacients, in violation of their Christian beliefs.

The Court held that the contraceptive mandate violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993, ruling that the Act’s protections extended to closely held corporations, with the mandate substantially burdening their religious freedoms. The Court acknowledged the federal government’s compelling interest in …

Journal of Tourism Insights

Events and festivals can help attract people to a destination, and this study was to examine how events and festivals can build and diversify tourism. With their programs of pleasurable activities and entertainment, events and festivals have a historical trajectory of delivering development outcomes such as economic restructuring and tourism revenue generation. In addition, events and festivals can provide an opportunity for a leisure, social, or cultural experience that is outside the normal range of visitors’ choices. Furthermore, events and festivals can raise market awareness and boost the local economy.

Based on secondary data from books, research papers, and websites, …

Travel Preferences Of Recreational Motorcyclists’, Melissa Weddell

Journal of Tourism Insights

The Blue Ridge Parkway, located in the mountain region of North Carolina, attracts over 20 million visitors each year with an estimated 500,000 touring on motorcycles, who often consider the region the best motorcycle venue in the United States. While many studies have examined both recreation preferences and a wide array of recreation activities in the Blue Ridge Mountain area, empirical research is lacking on motorcycle recreationists’ preferences and economic impacts. Therefore, this research project aims to understand these aspects of the recreational experience within a specific travel group. A total of 189 people completed the online survey administered to …

Emerging Opportunities For Commercial Recreation, Joshua Carroll Ph.D. Jul 2014

Emerging Opportunities For Commercial Recreation, Joshua Carroll Ph.D.

Journal of Tourism Insights

The commercial recreation industry faces new opportunities due to the changing economic climate and its impact upon public recreation providers (Outdoor Industry Association, 2012). Those recreation opportunities historically offered by public entities are transforming and as a result recreationists are experiencing more park closures, limited hours of operation, a reduction in quality, and ultimately dissatisfaction (Crompton, 1999; Koeberer, 2011). There is a shift occurring and this opens up a wide market for new commercial recreation operators to fulfill this gap. For trail-based recreation this usually requires a sizable piece of land that often precludes most potential market interests. However, with …

Ecological Worldviews: A Missing Perspective To Advance Sustainability Leadership, Steve Schein Jul 2014

Ecological Worldviews: A Missing Perspective To Advance Sustainability Leadership, Steve Schein

Academic Conference on Good Business

ABSTRACT

This article presents the findings from an empirical study of ecological worldviews of global sustainability leaders. Although a significant body of research has emerged in recent years focused on corporate sustainability at the organizational level, the literature has paid less attention to corporate sustainability at the individual level. As a result, little is known about the deeper psychological motivations of sustainability leaders and how these motivations may influence their behavior and effectiveness as change agents.

The study was based on theoretical insights from several social science disciplines including deep ecology, eco-psychology, environmental sociology, and integral ecology. Drawing on interviews …

Korean Older Intimate Partner Violence Survivors In North America: Cultural Considerations And Practice Recommendations, Woochan Shim, Holly Nelson-Becker

Holly Nelson-Becker

While literature on elder abuse has expanded, elder abuse by intimate partners has been less investigated. Even less is known about intimate partner violence among older Koreans living in North America. This article identifies important cultural considerations for individuals helping the Korean older adult community beginning with the definition of intimate partner violence in this community and barriers to leaving that include traditional views of the East Asian self. Current practice interventions are discussed and recommendations for future practice such as healing han, the accumulated suffering from years of abuse, are suggested. The ultimate goal of this paper is to …
