The Military-Industrial Complex And Us Military Spending After 9/11, Ronald W. Cox Jun 2014

The Military-Industrial Complex And Us Military Spending After 9/11, Ronald W. Cox

Class, Race and Corporate Power

This article examines the economic, political and institutional power of the military-industrial complex (MIC) by examining its influence on military spending before and after the events of 9/11. The reasons for the continuity of MIC influence in US foreign policy is explored. This includes the role of military contractors in financing policy planning organizations, the relationship between military contractors and the Defense Department, and the centralization of executive branch authority in foreign policy decision-making, especially during critical junctures or foreign policy crises.

Evaluating Big Deal Journal Bundles, Ted Bergstrom Jun 2014

Evaluating Big Deal Journal Bundles, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

Large commercial publishers sell bundled online subscriptions to their entire list of academic journals at prices significantly lower than the sum of their á la carte prices. Bundle prices differ drastically between institutions, but they are not publicly posted. The data that we have collected enable us to compare the bundle prices charged by commercial publishers with those of nonprofit societies and to examine the types of price discrimination practiced by commercial and nonprofit journal publishers. This information is of interest to economists who study monopolist pricing, librarians interested in making efficient use of library budgets, and scholars who are …

Clownpants In The Classroom? Hypnotizing Chickens? Measurement Of Structural Distraction In Visual Presentation Documents, Jodi Kearns, Brian O'Connor Jun 2014

Clownpants In The Classroom? Hypnotizing Chickens? Measurement Of Structural Distraction In Visual Presentation Documents, Jodi Kearns, Brian O'Connor

Jodi Kearns, PhD

This paper considers the structure of entertainment media as a possible foundation for measuring aspects of visual presentations that could enhance or interfere with audience engagement. Factors that might account for the large number of negative comments about visual presentations are identified and a method of calculating entropy measurements for form attributes of presentations is introduced. Entropy calculations provide a numerical measure of structural elements that account for engagement or distraction. A set of peer evaluations of educational presentations is used to calibrate a distraction factor algorithm. Distraction as a consequence of document structure might enable engineering of a balance …

The Geography Of Racial Stereotyping: Evidence And Implications For Vra Preclearance After Shelby County, Christopher Elmendorf, Douglas Spencer Jun 2014

The Geography Of Racial Stereotyping: Evidence And Implications For Vra Preclearance After Shelby County, Christopher Elmendorf, Douglas Spencer

Douglas M. Spencer

The Supreme Court in Shelby County v. Holder (2013) effectively enjoined the preclearance regime of the Voting Rights Act. The Court deemed the coverage formula, which determines the jurisdictions subject to preclearance, insufficiently grounded in current conditions. This paper proposes a new, legally defensible approach to coverage based on between-state differences in the proportion of voting age citizens who subscribe to negative stereotypes about racial minorities and vote accordingly. The new coverage formula could also account for racially polarized voting and minority population size, but, for constitutional reasons, subjective discrimination by voters is the essential criterion. We demonstrate that the …

Incongruence With Social Work Culture Among Evangelical Students: The Mediating Role Of Group-Based Dominance, N. Walls, Kristie Seelman Jun 2014

Incongruence With Social Work Culture Among Evangelical Students: The Mediating Role Of Group-Based Dominance, N. Walls, Kristie Seelman

Kristie L Seelman

Teaching about religion in social work programs is viewed as a difficult topic fraught with tension and anxiety (Coholic, 2003), but when content about religion is not integrated into the curriculum, social work practitioners have little guidance on how to manage their own personal religious beliefs in the context of social work values in practice (Canda, Nakashima, & Furman, 2004). Given that religious values may influence how one perceives gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and even mental health (Duriez & Hutsebaut, 2000; Wilkinson, 2004) and play a role in the social worker’s ability to be authentic with a client and provide positive …

The Wingman Project: An Exploratory Study Of School-Based Communication With Grandparents, Meghan Kathleen Eliason Jun 2014

The Wingman Project: An Exploratory Study Of School-Based Communication With Grandparents, Meghan Kathleen Eliason

Meghan Eliason

Involvement of parents and family, school personnel, and community members is important because studies from early childhood, elementary, middle, and high schools have shown that students are more successful when their families are actively involved (Gonzalez-Dehass, Willems, & Holbein, 2005). One challenge facing K-12 public schools is the development and implementation of systematic and sustainable communication that encourages parents and family members to engage with their students’ schools. The purpose of this study was to explore the outcomes of regular written communication between schools and grandparents of enrolled students. This study was conducted at Oklahoma public schools of varying sizes …

Your Friends And Neighbors: Localized Economic Development And Criminal Activity [Working Paper Version], Matthew Freedman, Emily Owens Jun 2014

Your Friends And Neighbors: Localized Economic Development And Criminal Activity [Working Paper Version], Matthew Freedman, Emily Owens

Matthew Freedman

We exploit a sudden shock to demand for a subset of low-wage workers generated by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program in San Antonio, Texas to identify the effects of localized economic development on crime. We use a difference-in-differences methodology that takes advantage of variation in BRAC’s impact over time and across neighborhoods. We find that appropriative criminal behavior increases in neighborhoods where a fraction of residents experienced increases in earnings. This effect is driven by residents who were unlikely to be BRAC beneficiaries, implying that criminal opportunities are important in explaining patterns of crime.

The Conventional Option, Gregory Koger Jun 2014

The Conventional Option, Gregory Koger

Gregory Koger

The filibuster in the United States Senate effectively imposes a supermajority vote requirement to pass any legislation. Both supporters and critics of the filibuster agree that any filibuster reform would require extraordinary measures. In contrast to this consensus, this Article describes a method we call the “conventional option,” which allows the filibuster to be reformed by a simple majority of senators at any time using ordinary Senate procedures. As we show below, a majority of senators using the conventional option (1) cannot be filibustered; (2) can act on any day the Senate is in session (not just at the beginning …

On The Means Of Payment, Lester G. Telser Jun 2014

On The Means Of Payment, Lester G. Telser

Lester G Telser

Economic Paradise: gold and free banking is the first topic. Paradise Lost: the Garden of Eden has a Serpent is the second topic. The third topic is Fiat Money and the Monetary Authority. It describes some banking reforms proposed by Henry Simons writing during the 1930’s when the U.S. economy was in the Great Depression. The main lesson relevant today is the danger inherent in linking the means of payment to credit. Restoring required reserves on all forms of deposit in banks as well as in firms that offer checkable accounts follows from Simons’ proposals. The fourth topic describes sources …

Satisficing Decision Procedure And Optimal Consumption-Leisure Choice, Sergey V. Malakhov Jun 2014

Satisficing Decision Procedure And Optimal Consumption-Leisure Choice, Sergey V. Malakhov

Sergey Malakhov

The paper argues that a satisficing consumer decision equalizes marginal costs of search for satisficing price with the marginal benefit of search where the marginal costs of search are equal to the marginal loss in labor income and the marginal benefit of search is equal to the marginal savings on purchase. When the liquidity constraint is soft, a consumer maximizes the utility of his consumption-leisure choice with regard to the equality of marginal values of search. Therefore, the satisficing decision becomes optimal. And the equilibrium price of the satisficing optimal choice becomes equal to the willingness to accept.

Philosophy Of Linguistics, Robert J. Stainton Jun 2014

Philosophy Of Linguistics, Robert J. Stainton

Robert J. Stainton

Rather than attempting to survey the rich array of topics within Philosophy of Linguistics, this article focuses on two questions: “What kind of thing is Linguistics about?” and “What is the proper evidence-base for Linguistics?” After describing various exclusionary answers, it argues for Pluralism on both fronts: the objects of study in Linguistics are metaphysical hybrids, with physical, mental, abstract and social facets; and evidence from every domain should in principle be welcomed.

The Effect Of Personality Traits On Subject Choice And Performance In High School: Evidence From An English Cohort, Silvia Mendolia, Ian Walker Jun 2014

The Effect Of Personality Traits On Subject Choice And Performance In High School: Evidence From An English Cohort, Silvia Mendolia, Ian Walker

Silvia Mendolia

This paper investigates the relationship between personality traits in adolescence and performance in high school using a large and recent cohort study. In particular, we investigate the impact of locus of control, self-esteem and work ethics at age 15, on test scores at age 16, and on subject choices and subsequent performance at age 17-18. In particular, individuals with external locus of control or with low levels of self-esteem seem less likely to have good performance in test scores at age 16 and to pursue further studies at 17-18, especially in mathematics or science. We use matching methods to control …

Multiple Institutional Logics In Organizations: Explaining Their Varied Nature And Implication, Marya Besharov, Wendy K. Smith Jun 2014

Multiple Institutional Logics In Organizations: Explaining Their Varied Nature And Implication, Marya Besharov, Wendy K. Smith

Marya Besharov

Multiple institutional logics present a theoretical puzzle. While scholars recognize their increasing prevalence within organizations, research offers conflicting perspectives on their implications, causing confusion and inhibiting deeper understanding. In response, we propose a framework that delineates types of logic multiplicity within organizations, and we link these types with different outcomes. Our framework categorizes organizations in terms of logic compatibility and logic centrality and explains how field, organizational, and individual factors influence these two dimensions. We illustrate the value of our framework by showing how it helps explain the varied implications of logic multiplicity for internal conflict. By providing insight into …

Public Accounts Committees In Eastern Africa: A Comparative Analysis With A Focus On Tanzania, Abel A. Kinyondo, Riccardo Pelizzo

Abel Alfred Kinyondo

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC)—one of the standing committees of the Parliament of Tanzania—is an important institution for overseeing the implementation of the national budget and the expenditure of public monies. Properly functioning, the PAC has the capacity to promote good governance, curb corruption and increase the trust of citizens in the political system. To assess its performance and effectiveness, this brief compares the organizational characteristics and the level of activity of the PAC in Tanzania with the committees of five other countries in Eastern Africa: Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, South Sudan and Seychelles. The evidence presented indicates that the PAC …

Truth And (Self) Censorship In Military Memoirs. A Five Country Study Into Military Afghanistan Autobiographies, Esmeralda Kleinreesink Jun 2014

Truth And (Self) Censorship In Military Memoirs. A Five Country Study Into Military Afghanistan Autobiographies, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Sometimes it can be fairly difficult for outsiders to gain access to the military field. However, there is a rich source on the military that is readily available for every researcher: military memoirs. This source does provide some methodological challenges, nevertheless. One might wonder about the reliability (‘truth’) of these autobiographies and whether their content is affected by the fact that these books are prone to official censorship by the military in order to preserve operational security. This study shows that truth and (self) censorship are not only a concern for researchers, but also for military writers themselves and it …
