Perceived Discrepancies In Men's Motivations For Gender-Conforming Behaviors And Romantic Relationship Outcomes, Jonathan Robert Weaver May 2014

Perceived Discrepancies In Men's Motivations For Gender-Conforming Behaviors And Romantic Relationship Outcomes, Jonathan Robert Weaver

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Healthy romantic relationships are positively associated with physical and mental health outcomes, and past research has shown that traditional masculinity negatively impacts relationship satisfaction. The current study examined the effects of men's discrepancies between their self-ratings and perceptions of their peers' on autonomous and pressured motivations to act agentically on relationship outcomes for both partners in a heterosexual relationship. In addition, men's investment in gender ideals was measured as a potential moderator and men's self-esteem as a potential mediator. Specifically, it was predicted that men's self-esteem would mediate the association between the investment-by-discrepancies (autonomous and pressured) interactions and relationship satisfaction …

Digital Baboon: Curating 30 Years Of Primatology Research Data, Cynthia Hudson-Vitale, Jennifer Moore

University Libraries Presentations

Many digital data curators will agree that making digital storage, online platform, digitization best practices, and metadata schema choices is a complicated process, even for a simple database. Curating a project that encompasses tooth casts, palm prints, field sheets, videos, images, and a database assembled over a thirty-year period extends those challenges, but also creates an opportunity to preserve and share an irreplaceable contribution to research. Librarians at Washington University in St. Louis are currently working with Dr. Jane Phillips-Conroy, Professor of Physical Anthropology; Anatomy and Neurobiology, to digitally curate this heterogeneous mix of physical and digital data. Dr. Phillips-Conroy’s …

Civil Society Influence On International Organizations: Theorizing The State Channel, Christopher Pallas, Anders Uhlin May 2014

Civil Society Influence On International Organizations: Theorizing The State Channel, Christopher Pallas, Anders Uhlin

Christopher L. Pallas

The literature on transnational civil society tends to treat civil society organizations (CSOs) as independent actors, accomplishing policy change largely through moral force or popular pressure. However, a significant portion of CSO successes in policy advocacy actually utilizes alliances with state actors. To understand the implications of this ‘state channel’ of CSO influence, we develop a new model of CSO use of state influence. We identify four factors that determine whether the state channel is accessible for CSOs to use and is likely to produce more effective CSO influence than direct CSO engagement with the international organization (IO): the porousness …

The Study Of Safety Governance For Service Robots: On Open-Texture Risk, Yueh-Hsuan Weng

Yueh-Hsuan Weng

The emergence of steam and microelectrical machines in society gradually expanded since the era of the Industrial Revolution. Up until now, human beings have already co-existed with these machines for more than two centuries, and contemporary laws have developed preventional regulatory frameworks. These frameworks are based on risk assessments to supervise the safety of microelectrical machines which include automobiles, railway systems, elevators and industrial robots, etc. Regulators, especially South Korea and Japan expect human-robot co-existence societies to emerge within the next decade. These next generation robots will be capable of adapting to complex, unstructured environments and interact with humans to …

Limitations On Spatial Memory In Mice, Robert H.I. Dale, Martin Bedard May 2014

Limitations On Spatial Memory In Mice, Robert H.I. Dale, Martin Bedard

Robert H. I. Dale

Rats have an impressive ability to remember locations they have visited. Two experiments used an eight-arm radial maze to determine whether mice showed two important characteristics of this spatial memory: its durability, and its dependence on stimuli outside the maze (extreme stimuli). In Experiment 1, food-deprived mice were allowed to eat from four of the eight arms of the maze then, after delays of 5 sec, 1 min, or 5 min, they were permitted to choose the remaining arms. Choice accuracy declined significantly with the longer delays, but always remained above chance. In Experiment 2, the maze was rotated 180° …

Interactions Between Response Stereotypy And Memory Strategies On The Eight-Arm Radial Maze, Robert H.I. Dale, Nancy K. Innis

Robert H. I. Dale

Three groups of water-deprived rats collected water from the ends of the 8 arms of an 8-arm radial maze. Sighted subjects, and subjects blinded either with or without pre-enucleation experience on the radial maze, all retrieved the water efficiently. Most of the subjects exhibited the same response stereotypy, regularly choosing 8 adjacent arms of the maze, then stopping in the center of the maze. The strategies underlying this performance were analyzed by interrupting trials and rotating the maze 180° after the subject had made 3 choices. Sighted subjects depended on extramaze stimuli, naive-blind subjects depended on intramaze stimuli and experienced-blind …

An Economic Theory In Action In Asia, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

Our studies of economic development in our series at Paul Kim’s Asian Study Center at JCCC focus on having practical application or to be useful to our life not intending to build scientific or mathematical theories, which are often far detached from real life. This means that our studies seek for an inspiration or a new insight and target our thought to capture the right things to do at a right moment in history, not just theoretical or mathematical work. We predict the future of economic growth and show the crucial elements of economic growth at a particular moment in …

Shifting The Paradigm Of Music Instruction: Implications Of Embodiment Stemming From An Augmented Reality Guitar Learning System, Joseph Keebler, Travis J. Wiltshire, Dustin C. Smith, Stephen M. Fiore, Jeffrey S. Bedwell May 2014

Shifting The Paradigm Of Music Instruction: Implications Of Embodiment Stemming From An Augmented Reality Guitar Learning System, Joseph Keebler, Travis J. Wiltshire, Dustin C. Smith, Stephen M. Fiore, Jeffrey S. Bedwell

Publications

Musical instruction often includes materials that can act as a barrier to learning. New technologies using augmented reality may aid in reducing the initial difficulties involved in learning music by lowering these barriers characteristic of traditional instructional materials. Therefore, this set of studies examined a novel augmented reality guitar learning system (i.e., the Fretlight® guitar) in regards to current theories of embodied music cognition. Specifically, we examined the effects of using this system in comparison to a standard instructional material (i.e., diagrams). First, we review major theories related to musical embodiment and specify a niche within this research space we …

Fair Trade In Transition: Evolution, Popular Discourse, And The Case Of The Cado Cooperative In Cotopaxi, Ecuador, Robyn Michelle Odegard May 2014

Fair Trade In Transition: Evolution, Popular Discourse, And The Case Of The Cado Cooperative In Cotopaxi, Ecuador, Robyn Michelle Odegard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The literature on the changing nature of fair trade suggests it is indeed evolving and changed from the grassroots movement it once was. One of the strongest arguments that comes out in this body of literature is that the message, values, and way fair trade can encourage positive socio-economic and community development is changing. What the scholarship does not address, though, is how this evolution is changing the way that fair trade is perceived? The answer to this question about the changing perceptions of fair trade can be extended to those who produce fair trade products, those who consume them, …

An Examination Of Race, Socioeconomic Status, And Individualism-Collectivsm As Moderators Of The Work/Family Antecedent And Work-Family Conflict Relationship, Tyler Stout May 2014

An Examination Of Race, Socioeconomic Status, And Individualism-Collectivsm As Moderators Of The Work/Family Antecedent And Work-Family Conflict Relationship, Tyler Stout

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the role of race, socioeconomic status, and individualism-collectivism as moderators of the relationship between selected work and family antecedents and work-family conflict and evaluates the contribution of energy-based conflict to the work-family conflict (WFC) research. The study uses data obtained from a survey questionnaire given to 414 participants recruited from an online labor market. Study hypotheses were tested through structural equation modeling. The results indicate that while moderating effects were slight, a proposed model where energy-based conflict is included outperforms traditional time/strain/behavior-based models and that established variables may drop to non-significance when additional variables are included in …

In order to investigate the usage of post-secondary transition services, New Jersey child study team members completed the questionnaire, Post-Secondary Transition and Follow-up Services in Public Education, designed by the principal researcher. A one-way analysis of …

Self-Control Depletion And Nicotine Deprivation As Precipitants Of Smoking Cessation Failure: A Human Laboratory Model, Bryan Heckman May 2014

Self-Control Depletion And Nicotine Deprivation As Precipitants Of Smoking Cessation Failure: A Human Laboratory Model, Bryan Heckman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The need to understand the reinforcing properties of smoking and potential precipitants of relapse is exemplified by evidence that relapse rates exceed 95%. The Self-Control Strength model, which proposes that self-control is dependent upon limited resources and susceptible to fatigue, may offer insight into the relapse process. Indeed, there is empirical support that engaging in a task that requires self-control, relative to a comparable control, results in performance decrements on subsequent self-control tasks. The primary goal of the current study was to test whether self-control depletion (SCD) may serve as a novel antecedent for cessation failure, using a validated laboratory …

Investigating The Relationship Between Reckless Behaviours, Gender, Psychological Mindedness, And Attachment Security, Aileen M. Pidgeon, Lucas Ford

Aileen M. Pidgeon

Reckless behaviours, such as reckless driving, sexual behaviours and drug use, are major lifestyle contributors to morbidity and mortality for young adults. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the relationship between reckless behaviours, gender, attachment security and psychological mindedness. Data was collected from university students (n = 101) aged between 18 to 30 years old (M = 21) and analysed using multivariate analysis of covariance. Gender was found to be a significant predictor of reckless behaviour (p = .004), with males reporting significantly higher levels. Participants reporting high levels of attachment security did not report significantly different …

Guatemalan Ex-Combatant Perspectives On Reintegration: A Grounded Theory, Randall Janzen May 2014

Guatemalan Ex-Combatant Perspectives On Reintegration: A Grounded Theory, Randall Janzen

The Qualitative Report

While reintegration programs for ex‐combatants have become a major focus of cease fire agreements, their success remains elusive. In this study, I interview members of Nuevo Horizonte, an intentional community comprised of Guatemalan ex‐guerrillas. These men and women reflect on two questions: what was reintegration like, and what advice do you have for other reintegrating ex-combatants. Using a grounded theory approach, common themes (such as being united) were developed and lead to a substantive theory of their transformative reintegration process. The collective voice of these ex‐ combatants challenges conventional reintegration programs by (a) challenging the demobilization prerogative showcasing how their …

Chinese Biology Teaching Assistants' Perception Of Their English Proficiency: An Exploratory Case Study, Xuan Jiang May 2014

Chinese Biology Teaching Assistants' Perception Of Their English Proficiency: An Exploratory Case Study, Xuan Jiang

The Qualitative Report

Many Chinese graduate students are teaching assistants (TAs) in mathematics, science and engineering departments in the U.S. universities. TAs’ English proficiency has been a subject of concern or even criticism for years in the U.S. However, only one research has been found around international TAs’ English proficiency per discipline. No research has been found about Chinese TAs’ English proficiency. None has been done on Chinese TA’s perception of their English proficiency in biology. With this gap noticed, I deployed interviews to explore what the three biology TAs perceived as to their English proficiency. The study found that their perception was …

Looking Through A Different Window: Chronic Disease Management In Public Health. Application Of Symbolic Interactionism And Institutional Ethnography, Yuliya Knyahnytska May 2014

Looking Through A Different Window: Chronic Disease Management In Public Health. Application Of Symbolic Interactionism And Institutional Ethnography, Yuliya Knyahnytska

The Qualitative Report

Chronic diseases are defined as illnesses that are prolonged, do not resolve spontaneously and are rarely cured. They constitute 46% of the global burden of diseases and are responsible for 59% of deaths in Canada, tallying billions of dollars in annual medical expenditures. Regardless of the variety of available treatments, a vast majority of patients with chronic conditions report they do not receive the care they need or expect. The efficacy of chronic disease management (CDM) has been proven effective for the general population; the focus of this paper, however, is around populations who are less responsive to mainstream behaviour …
