Lisa De Bortoli

PISA is a survey that measures the knowledge and skills of 15-year-olds, who are near the end of compulsory schooling in most participating education systems. PISA in Brief summarises the results from the PISA 2012 assessment of students’ mathematical, scientific and reading literacy skills. It tells us about how students performed in the assessment and describes some wider findings about what lies behind their results.

36. Evidence Summarized In Attorneys' Closing Arguments Predicts Acquittals In Criminal Trials Of Child Sexual Abuse., Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

Evidence summarized in attorney’s closing arguments of criminal child sexual abuse cases (N = 189) was coded to predict acquittal rates. Ten variables were significant bivariate predictors; five variables significant at p < .01 were entered into a multivariate model. Cases were likely to result in an acquittal when the defendant was not charged with force, the child maintained contact with the defendant after the abuse occurred, or the defense presented a hearsay witness regarding the victim’s statements, a witness regarding the victim’s character, or a witness regarding another witnesses’ character (usually the mother). The findings suggest that jurors might …

Central Minnesota Economic And Business Conditions Report: First Quarter 2014, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald May 2014

Central Minnesota Economic And Business Conditions Report: First Quarter 2014, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald

Central Minnesota Economic and Business Conditions Report

Central Minnesota business conditions are expected to improve over the next several months according to the predictions of the St. Cloud State University (SCSU) Central Minnesota Index of Leading Economic Indicators. The leading economic indicator index (LEI) improved in the 2014 first quarter as strong growth in new residential building permits in the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), along with gains in a general measure of state business conditions helped drive the LEI higher. The SCSU Central Minnesota Index of Leading Economic Indicators is now 7.9 percent higher than one year ago.

There were 1,450 new business filings with …

Northwest Minnesota Economic And Business Conditions Report: First Quarter 2014, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald

Northwest Minnesota Economic and Business Conditions Report

Northwest Minnesota business conditions are expected to slow over the next several months according to the predictions of the St. Cloud State University (SCSU) Northwest Minnesota Index of Leading Economic Indicators. The macroeconomic environment for rural America has softened and consumer sentiment has slowed slightly. Poor weather did not interfere much with building permits in the region’s two metro areas. The Northwest Minnesota index in contrast rose 2.2 percent in the previous year, so we foresee no recession, just a slower period than 2012 or 2013.

There were 1,024 new business filings with the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of …

Southeast Minnesota Economic And Business Conditions Report: First Quarter 2014, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald

Southeast Minnesota Economic and Business Conditions Report

Southeast Minnesota business conditions are expected to remain strong over the next several months according to the predictions of the St. Cloud State University (SCSU) Southeast Minnesota Index of Leading Economic Indicators. While an uptick in initial jobless claims helped push the leading economic indicator index (LEI) lower last quarter, overall business conditions remain steady in the southeast portion of the state. Strong gains in new residential building permits in the Rochester Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), along with growth in a general measure of state business conditions contributed favorably to the LEI. The Southeast Minnesota Index is now 16.1 percent …

Southwest Minnesota Economic And Business Conditions Report: First Quarter 2014, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald

Southwest Minnesota Economic and Business Conditions Report

Southwest Minnesota business conditions are expected to improve over the next several months according to the predictions of the St. Cloud State University (SCSU) Southwest Minnesota Index of Leading Economic Indicators. With a significant reduction in initial jobless claims and continued increases in new business incorporations and limited liability companies (LLC), the Southwest Minnesota economy appears headed for a strong growth trajectory through the summer months. The SCSU Southwest Minnesota Index of Leading Economic Indicators is now 1.8 percent higher than one year ago.

There were 660 new business filings with the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State in …

Twin Cities Minnesota Economic And Business Conditions Report: First Quarter 2014, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald May 2014

Twin Cities Minnesota Economic And Business Conditions Report: First Quarter 2014, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald

Twin Cities Minnesota Economic and Business Conditions Report

Twin Cities business conditions are expected to pick up over the next several months according to the predictions of the St. Cloud State University (SCSU) Twin Cities Index of Leading Economic Indicators. The leading economic indicator index (LEI) was lifted by an increase in new filings for business incorporations and limited liability companies (LLC) in the Twin Cities. An improvement in a general measure of statewide business conditions also contributed positively to the Twin Cities outlook. Despite poor winter weather, the value of residential building permits expanded in the Twin Cities metro, further lifting the outlook for the regional economy. …

Northeast Minnesota Economic And Business Conditions Report: First Quarter 2014, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald May 2014

Northeast Minnesota Economic And Business Conditions Report: First Quarter 2014, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald

Northeast Minnesota Economic and Business Conditions Report

Northeast Minnesota business conditions are expected to improve over the next several months according to the predictions of the St. Cloud State University (SCSU) Northeast Minnesota Index of Leading Economic Indicators. The leading economic indicator index (LEI) improved in the first quarter as increases in filings for new business incorporations, improvements in a general measure of state business conditions and lower initial jobless claims drove the index higher. This was partially offset by weaker results of a supply managers’ survey and a decline in the value of first quarter Duluth/Superior Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) residential building permits.

There were 539 …

The Effects Of Acute Stress Exposure On Neural Correlates Of Pavlovian Conditioning With Monetary Gains And Losses, Andrea H. Lewis, Anthony J. Porcelli, Mauricio R. Delgado May 2014

The Effects Of Acute Stress Exposure On Neural Correlates Of Pavlovian Conditioning With Monetary Gains And Losses, Andrea H. Lewis, Anthony J. Porcelli, Mauricio R. Delgado

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Pavlovian conditioning involves the association of an inherently neutral stimulus with an appetitive or aversive outcome, such that the neutral stimulus itself acquires reinforcing properties. Across species, this type of learning has been shown to involve subcortical brain regions such as the striatum and the amygdala. It is less clear, however, how the neural circuitry involved in the acquisition of Pavlovian contingencies in humans, particularly in the striatum, is affected by acute stress. In the current study, we investigate the effect of acute stress exposure on Pavlovian conditioning using monetary reinforcers. Participants underwent a partial reinforcement conditioning procedure in which …

Simulation-Based Learning Environments To Teach Complexity: The Missing Link In Teaching Sustainable Public Management, Michael Deegan, Krystyna Stave, Rod Macdonald, David Andersen, Minyoung Ku, Eliot Rich

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

While public-sector management problems are steeped in positivistic and socially constructed complexity, public management education in the management of complexity lags behind that of business schools, particularly in the application of simulation-based learning. This paper describes a Simulation-Based Learning Environment for public management education that includes a coupled case study and System Dynamics simulation surrounding flood protection, a domain where stewardship decisions regarding public infrastructure and investment have direct and indirect effects on businesses and the public. The Pointe Claire case and CoastalProtectSIM simulation provide a platform for policy experimentation under conditions of exogenous uncertainty (weather and climate change) as …

John Whitmore, Ph.D., professor of geology at Cedarville University, was invited by Dr. Andrew Snelling of the Creation Museum to investigate the collection site in Colorado. Dr. Whitmore brought seven advanced geology students from Cedarville to help with the work. The work in Colorado, which allowed the students to learn more about the rocks where the dinosaur was found, provided a better interpretation of …

Managing Risk With A Virtual Reading Room: Two Born Digital Projects, Michelle Light May 2014

Managing Risk With A Virtual Reading Room: Two Born Digital Projects, Michelle Light

Library Faculty Publications

In March 2010, the University of California, Irvine, launched a site to provide online access to papers of Richard Rorty in the form of a virtual reading room.1 Although we didn’t know it then, we quickly learned that we were one of the first academic repositories in the United States to risk providing remote, online access to born-digital manuscripts. The virtual reading room mitigated the risks involved in providing this kind of access to personal, archival materials with privacy and copyright issues by limiting the number of qualified users and by limiting the discoverability of full-text content on the …

Fiscal Stress In American Municipalities: An Analysis On The Role Of The State As It Relates To Municipal Financial Health, Yong-Hua He May 2014

Fiscal Stress In American Municipalities: An Analysis On The Role Of The State As It Relates To Municipal Financial Health, Yong-Hua He

Public Affairs Capstones Collection

While municipal bankruptcy as a whole is rare in the United States, since the Great Recession, fiscal distress in municipalities is common. This is due to the compounding of decreased state aid, declining property values and increased need of services. In these fiscally and administratively challenging times, where the U.S. government is ripe and saddled with political discord, high debt/legacy costs, and decreased economic stability, can cities walk the stringent financial tightrope without falling head first? This research paper addresses the causations leading to municipal fiscal stress, role of the state as it relates to municipal financial health and best …

Exploring Connections Between Efforts To Restrict Same-Sex Marriage And Surging Public Opinion Support For Same-Sex Marriage Rights: Could Efforts To Restrict Gay Rights Help To Explain Increases In Public Opinion Support For Same-Sex Marriage?, Samuel Everett Christian Dunlop May 2014

Exploring Connections Between Efforts To Restrict Same-Sex Marriage And Surging Public Opinion Support For Same-Sex Marriage Rights: Could Efforts To Restrict Gay Rights Help To Explain Increases In Public Opinion Support For Same-Sex Marriage?, Samuel Everett Christian Dunlop

Dissertations and Theses

Scholarly research on the subject of the swift pace of change in support for same-sex marriage has evolved significantly over the last ten years. The shift has gone beyond the scholarship's initial description amongst demographic groups on how opinion has changed on gay rights issues, like same-sex marriage, to an examination of why the change has occurred. A great deal of the initial research on the topic seemed to focus on demographic traits that suggested a greater propensity toward support for same-sex marriage as time went on. Is the existent literature sufficient to explain why such a dramatic change in …
