Health Care Reform In Russia And The United States, David A. Schultz, Olga Filatova
Health Care Reform In Russia And The United States, David A. Schultz, Olga Filatova
David A Schultz
Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights specifies that everyone has a right to adequate medical care. Yet what constitutes adequate medical care and how to deliver it is a problem states across the world confront as they face similar problems of rising costs, access, quality of service, and technological development. This article compares health care reform in the United States and the Russian Federation since 1990. Despite differences these two countries and their health care systems have, they show interesting parallels, convergences, and lessons in terms of how reform occurs.

Library-led publishing is one of the new approaches to journal publishing and open access that has grown tremendously in the last few years. A 2010 MLIS-funded survey found that 55% of respondents—from U.S. academic libraries of all different types and sizes—were already implementing or developing a publishing program. Library-led publishing has garnered such momentum because, by offering low- or no-cost publishing to university scholars, it addresses needs that traditional publishing has not been able to meet. This article presents a series of small case studies to illustrate different journals that have benefited from the library-publishing model: a journal that struggled …

Book Review, Earthea Nance
Earthea Nance, PhD (Stanford University, 2004)
Book Review published in the journal Water International (2015) The topic… “The book builds upon Nance’s research and presents a comprehensive account of Brazil’s experience of implementing condominial sewerage.” The topic… “From the very beginning, the author expresses her concerns in escaping from preconceived ideas about conventional and participatory development, positioning her views within a third wave of post-structural development discourse, neither universalist nor relativist, that is neither denying nor overvaluing the social content of development.” Research methods… “Nance manages to do so by integrating different areas of established knowledge and examining her research issue from a privileged historical perspective. …

The (Somewhat) False Hope Of Comprehensive Planning, Michael Lewyn
The (Somewhat) False Hope Of Comprehensive Planning, Michael Lewyn
Michael E Lewyn
Many commentators treat municipal comprehensive planning as necessary (or at least sufficient) for smart growth. This essay argues that comprehensive plans, although desirable, are neither necessary nor sufficient for "smarter" (that is, more nondriver-friendly) development.

Book Review: Fighting For Reliable Evidence, By Judith Gueron And Howard Rolston., Rebecca A. Maynard
REBECCA A MAYNARD
Fighting for Reliable Evidence is an incredibly powerful book, full of information that graduate schools don’t teach and that would take a lifetime to learn on the job. Readers shadow the narrators—Judith Gueron, one of the founding employees and now President Emeritus of MDRC, and Howard Rolston, a long-time senior civil servant in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services—as they share their intersecting professional journeys in service of improving the welfare of our nation and its people. Over a 40 year period that began in 1974, a small band of warriors from the philanthropic, policy, and research communities, …

Review Of The Book "African Americans And Criminal Justice: An Encyclopedia", Reference & User Services Quarterly, Michael Lawrence Nelson
Michael Lawrence Nelson
This work treats an enduring sociopolitical issue that again captured public attention in summer 2014 with the police shooting of Michael Brown in Missouri (too recent to be included in the reviewed work). Despite the extensive mass media attention and scholarly output on the topic, this is the first encyclopedia to focus specifically on African Americans and the US criminal justice system.

This packet contains course materials for the University of Massachusetts Amherst class ANT 106: Culture through Film. This 100-level Cultural Anthropology class was recently redeveloped through a 2014 UMass Open Education Initiative grant and is designed to experientially engage students in the learning process without requiring the purchase of textbooks, software, or any other course materials on their part. Through discussion of paired readings and films, students explore the basic tenets of anthropological theory and analyze the cultural construction of race, class, gender, and other social categories. In addition to completing a series of papers, in-class activities and weekly quizzes, …
Development, Health And Race Differences In Fertility At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century In The U.S. South, Cheryl Elman, Andrew S. London, Robert A. Mcguire
Development, Health And Race Differences In Fertility At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century In The U.S. South, Cheryl Elman, Andrew S. London, Robert A. Mcguire
Cheryl Elman
Mid-twentieth century demographers were puzzled to find that, between 1880 and 1910, fertility rates had dropped more precipitously among African American than U.S. white women. Since then, demographic research has focused on historical fertility differentials in the South, where most African Americans lived before 1920. Under a multiple causes model, two major sources of race differences have found some empirical support. One stresses that timing differences in voluntary fertility control, due to a high demand for child labor in tenant farming, sustained both high overall southern rural fertility rates and race differences, to about 1940. A second mechanism stresses that …

The Initiation Of Heroism Science, Scott T. Allison
The Initiation Of Heroism Science, Scott T. Allison
Scott T. Allison
In this article I describe the emergent field of heroism science. I identify several markers of its emergence and offer reasons why the science is now coalescing into an established and autonomous field of inquiry. Moreover, I discuss the importance of maintaining a dynamic symbiotic relationship between the scientific and activist wings of the heroism movement. The aims and scope of heroism science are discussed, and reasons are offered for producing a science that is inclusive, transdisciplinary, and risk-taking. I examine all these issues within the metaphorical framework of initiation.
Experiencing Private Sector Competition: The Case Of Nepal's Public Schools, Priyadarshani Joshi
Experiencing Private Sector Competition: The Case Of Nepal's Public Schools, Priyadarshani Joshi
Priyadarshani Joshi
This paper describes how public schools experience competition from private schools in the context of a low-income country: Nepal. I argue that experiencing competitive pressures is a necessary starting point for public schools to feel the need to initiate competitive reforms. I use qualitative analysis to illuminate how the experience of competition is linked to school and community characteristics, and principal perceptions. I find that there are key temporal and demographic dimensions that determine the public school’s experience of competition and their ability to respond with reforms. I find that public schools were shielded from private competition for well over …

The Shared Experiences Of Counselors Who Practice In Natural Environments, Bonnie King
The Shared Experiences Of Counselors Who Practice In Natural Environments, Bonnie King
Bonnie King
The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to gain a deep understanding of the shared experiences of therapists who provide counseling in non-traditional, natural environment settings. Eight participants shared their experiences about counseling in nature. The primary research question for this study was: What are the shared experiences of counselors who provide nature-based counseling? A review of the literature of nature-based counseling provided benefits to spending time in nature, descriptions of various types of nature-based counseling, and ethical and legal issues that affect nature-based counselors. Semi-structured interviews comprised of open-ended questions were used to collect data by phone and …
Suffering And Sacrifice: Individual And Collective Benefits, And Implications For Leadership, Scott T. Allison, Gwen Setterberg
Suffering And Sacrifice: Individual And Collective Benefits, And Implications For Leadership, Scott T. Allison, Gwen Setterberg
Scott T. Allison
In this chapter, we review the ways in which suffering and sacrifice are beneficial to human beings. In our review, we draw from both ancient and modern spiritual traditions and a large body of psychological research on the determinants of happiness and mental health. Our review is necessarily an abbreviated one; a thorough treatment of this topic would surely fill an entire volume. This chapter represents an initial attempt to illuminate basic insights, using broad brushstrokes, about the ways in which suffering and sacrifice contribute to people’s emotional, behavioral, and spiritual wellness. In addition to describing the psychological and spiritual …

“(Un)Conventional Wisdom And Presidential Politics: The Myth Of Convention Bumps And Favorite Son Vice-Presidents”, David A. Schultz
David A Schultz
Conventional wisdom pervades US presidential politics. Among "old politicians' tales" are that a political party's placement of a national convention in a state can affecting presidential voting there, swinging or flipping it to its presidential candidate. Second, that the selection of a vice-presidential candidate as a favorite son (or daughter) will deliver a state's electoral votes to a presidential ticket. This article examines the placement of national party conventions and selection of vice-presidential candidates for Democratic and Republican Parties since 1948. It finds that presidential candidates do not earn a state bump or advantage by either locating a national convention …

Lägst Ned På Skalan? Hälsooch Sjukvårdens Bemötande Av Äldre Kvinnor Som Migrerat Till Sverige, Titti Mattsson, Helene Brodin
Titti Mattsson
This article aims to investigate the treatment of older female migrants in Swedish healthcare. The study puts the emphasis on exploring if there are differences in the interpersonal treatment of older female migrants that make them feel discriminated against. The theoretic inspiration for the article comes from Fineman’s vulnerability theory and intersectional perspectives on equality. A critical approach to the understanding of equality as sameness of treatment is central to the study. Drawing upon 37 semi-structured interviews with health professionals and older female migrants, the article shows several inequalities in access and treatment of older female migrants. Inequalities in access …
