The Virtuous Circle Of Innovation In Italian Firms, Francesco Bogliacino, Matteo Lucchese, Leopoldo Nascia, Mario Pianta Dec 2014

The Virtuous Circle Of Innovation In Italian Firms, Francesco Bogliacino, Matteo Lucchese, Leopoldo Nascia, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

The “virtuous circle” between innovative inputs, outputs and economic performance is investigated in this article with a three equation model highlighting feedback loops and simultaneous relations. An empirical test is carried out considering innovative expenditure, innovative turnover and economic results in a sample of Italian manufacturing firms which are ‘serial innovators’. We use data for the period 2000-2008 from a rich panel of Italian firms over 50 employees drawn from ISTAT, the National Institute of Statistics, including data from three waves of Community Innovation Surveys. The model we use extends the one developed at the industry level by Bogliacino and …

Crecimiento E Institucionalización De La Ciencia Política En México, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Dec 2014

Crecimiento E Institucionalización De La Ciencia Política En México, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Othering, An Analysis, Lajos L. Brons Dec 2014

Othering, An Analysis, Lajos L. Brons

Lajos Brons

Othering is the construction and identification of the self or in-group and the other or out-group in mutual, unequal opposition by attributing relative inferiority and/or radical alienness to the other/out-group. The notion of othering spread from feminist theory and post-colonial studies to other areas of the humanities and social sciences, but is originally rooted in Hegel’s dialectic of identification and distantiation in the encounter of the self with some other in his “Master-Slave dialectic”. In this paper, after reviewing the philosophical and psychological background of othering, I distinguish two kinds of othering, “crude” and “sophisticated”, that differ in the logical …

Gender Budgeting: A Theoretical Perspective And Experiences, Professor Vibhuti Patel Dec 2014

Gender Budgeting: A Theoretical Perspective And Experiences, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

Budget is an important tool in the hands of state for affirmative action for improvement of gender relations through reduction of gender gap in the development process. It can help to reduce economic inequalities, between men and women as well as between the rich and the poor Hence, the budgetary policies need to keep into considerations the gender dynamics operating in the economy and in the civil society. There is a need to highlight participatory approaches bottom up budget, child budget, green budgeting, local and global implications of pro-poor and pro-women budgeting and inter-linkages between gender-sensitive budgeting and women’s empowerment. …

Clash Of Images: 9/11 & Terrorism, Esmaeil Zeiny Dec 2014

Clash Of Images: 9/11 & Terrorism, Esmaeil Zeiny

Esmaeil Zeiny

The world we live is fraught with visual images. These images are central to how we communicate and represent in our lives. They are of significance in the imagination and construction of cultural identities. Visual communication is more ubiquitous than ever before because images have the ability to quickly influence viewers both cognitively and emotionally. Many of the images that we see daily are ideological images such as the anti-Muslim or anti-American pictures triggered by 9/11. This paper examines the 9/11 images and the consequent images of ‘war on terror.’ Utilizing and extending Gillian Whitlock’s theory of ‘soft weapons’ to …

The ‘Actually Existing Smart City’, Alan Wiig, Taylor Shelton, Matthew Zook Dec 2014

The ‘Actually Existing Smart City’, Alan Wiig, Taylor Shelton, Matthew Zook

Alan Wiig

This paper grounds the critique of the ‘smart city’ in its historical and geographical context. Adapting Brenner and Theodore’s notion of ‘actually existing neoliberalism’, we suggest a greater attention be paid to the ‘actually existing smart city’, rather than the exceptional or paradigmatic smart cities of Songdo, Masdar and Living PlanIT Valley. Through a closer analysis of cases in Louisville and Philadelphia, we demonstrate the utility of understanding the material effects of these policies in actual cities around the world, with a particular focus on how and from where these policies have arisen, and how they have unevenly impacted the …

Fractured Oversight: The Abcs Of Cultural Heritage In Palestine After The Oslo Accords, Morag M. Kersel Dec 2014

Fractured Oversight: The Abcs Of Cultural Heritage In Palestine After The Oslo Accords, Morag M. Kersel

Morag M. Kersel

Palestine is a state in limbo—they lack full formal recognition as a sovereign land but possess a unique nation-state status that incorporates elements of a unified national consciousness and basic civil institutions albeit with limited autonomy. Palestine’s ambiguous political status is starkly illustrated by its convoluted territorial control, and nowhere is this more clearly attested than in the jurisdiction of archaeological sites and the display of artifacts in museums. The legislative colonial legacies of the Ottoman, the British Mandate, the Jordanians, the Egyptians, Israeli military orders, and the 1995 Oslo II Accords, which carved the Occupied Territories into a complex …

Stories And Statistics From Library-Led Publishing, Casey Busher, Irene Kamotsky Dec 2014

Stories And Statistics From Library-Led Publishing, Casey Busher, Irene Kamotsky

Casey Busher

Library-led publishing is one of the new approaches to journal publishing and open access that has grown tremendously in the last few years. A 2010 MLIS-funded survey found that 55% of respondents—from U.S. academic libraries of all different types and sizes—were already implementing or developing a publishing program. Library-led publishing has garnered such momentum because, by offering low- or no-cost publishing to university scholars, it addresses needs that traditional publishing has not been able to meet. This article presents a series of small case studies to illustrate different journals that have benefited from the library-publishing model: a journal that struggled …

The Physical And Social Determinants Of Mortality In The 3.11 Tsunami, Daniel P. Aldrich, Yasuyuki Sawada Dec 2014

The Physical And Social Determinants Of Mortality In The 3.11 Tsunami, Daniel P. Aldrich, Yasuyuki Sawada

Daniel P Aldrich

Abstract: The human consequences of the 3.11 tsunami were not distributed equally across the municipalities of the Tohoku region of northeastern Japan. Instead, the mortality rate from the massive waves varied tremendously from zero to ten percent of the local residential population. What accounts for this variation remains a critical question for researchers and policy makers alike. This paper uses a new, sui generis data set including all villages, towns, and cities on the Pacific Ocean side of the Tohoku region to untangle the factors connected to mortality during the disaster. With data on demographic, geophysical, infrastructure, social capital, and …

Elders Leading The Way To Resilience, Emi Kiyota, Yasuhiro Tanaka, Margaret Arnold, Daniel P. Aldrich Dec 2014

Elders Leading The Way To Resilience, Emi Kiyota, Yasuhiro Tanaka, Margaret Arnold, Daniel P. Aldrich

Daniel P Aldrich

The theory of change behind this project draws on multiple constructs, including elder empowerment, ibasho, community bonding, social capital, and community resilience. 1. Empowering elders changes the way they feel about their role in their community 2. Creating the Ibasho Café (both physical and social infrastructures) with elders in a leadership role increases the community bonding among the members of all ages 3. A strong sense of community bonding increases the level of social network and community participation, enhancing the sense of belonging and trust, and developing reciprocity between neighbors 4. An enhanced sense of social capital strengthens the community’s …

The Interplay Of International Students’ Acculturative Stress, Social Support, And Acculturation Modes, Susan Kashubeck-West, Christopher Sullivan

Susan Kashubeck-West

This study examined the relationship between acculturation modes (assimilation, integration, separation and marginalization), social support, and acculturative stress in undergraduate and graduate international students (N=104) at a medium-sized public university in the Midwestern United States. The study found that international students with broad-based social support and an Integration approach to acculturation experienced lower levels of acculturative stress. Implications for more effective counseling with international students are addressed.

Checklists And Worker Behaviour: A Field Experiment, C. Kirabo Jackson, Henry Schneider Dec 2014

Checklists And Worker Behaviour: A Field Experiment, C. Kirabo Jackson, Henry Schneider

C. Kirabo Jackson

We analyze data from a field experiment in which an auto-repair firm provided checklists to mechanics and monitored their use. Revenue was 20 percent higher during the experiment, and the effect is equivalent to that of a 1.6 percentage point (10 percent) commission increase. Checklists appear to boost productivity by serving both as a memory aid and a monitoring technology. Despite the large benefits to the firm, mechanics did not use checklists without the firm directly monitoring their use. We show that a moral hazard can explain why mechanics do not otherwise adopt checklists.

Graffiti Goes To The Movies: American Fictional Films Featuring Graffiti Artists/Writers And Themes, Jeffrey Ian Ross Ph.D. Dec 2014

Graffiti Goes To The Movies: American Fictional Films Featuring Graffiti Artists/Writers And Themes, Jeffrey Ian Ross Ph.D.

Jeffrey Ian Ross Ph.D.

Since the early 1980s, in addition to the increase in graffiti and street art in many urban contexts, a number of movies have been made that have either examined this phenomenon and the people who engage in this activity, or used graffiti and street art as a backdrop to tell a story. This article briefly reviews the scholarly literature that examines movies that portray criminals and criminal actions, and then analyzes seven American-produced fictional (drama) films using graffiti writers/artists as major characters and then draws generalizations about them. Although this is not a semiotic analysis of the films, to the …

Breaking Out Of Prison And Into Print? Rationales And Strategies To Assist Educated Convicts Conduct Scholarly Research And Writing Behind Bars, Jeffrey Ian Ross Ph.D., Miguel Zaldivar, Richard Tewksbury

Jeffrey Ian Ross Ph.D.

Some educated convicts want to conduct scholarly research and have the results of their work appear in academic publications. This provides numerous benefits and challenges to the researcher/writer and the academic world. This article outlines these issues in order to assist convicts, scholars, journal editors, and correctional service personnel understand the opportunities and limitations to scholarly research by convicts behind bars. The authors argue that the best strategy to use for inmates in this situation is a team research approach. The discussion provides definitions and examples of the challenges, opportunities, and means of overcoming these obstacles.

Violence And Pastoral Care In Putumayo, Colombia, Winifred L. Tate Dec 2014

Violence And Pastoral Care In Putumayo, Colombia, Winifred L. Tate

Winifred L. Tate

The southern Colombian state of Putumayo, a region of frontier colonization along the
Ecuadoran border, has been the scene of entrenched violence and illegal drug production for
more than three decades. During domination by the country’s largest and oldest guerrilla group,
the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), peasant farmers in the area came to
supply more than fifty per cent of the coca used in the world cocaine trade. Beginning in the late
1990s, violence spiked as right-wing paramilitary groups steadily gained control of small towns.
At the same time, the United States orchestrated a major military counter narcotics …

The Aspirational State: State Effects In Putumayo, Winifred L. Tate Dec 2014

The Aspirational State: State Effects In Putumayo, Winifred L. Tate

Winifred L. Tate

At the turn of the millennium, conditions in the Putumayo region of Colombia challenged
virtually every aspect of the standard narrative of the relations between state, society, territory,
citizenship, and rights. The normative ideal of modern state-society relations assumes territorial
control via a state apparatus capable of guaranteeing citizens’ rights and the rule of law when
threatened by illegal activities, armed actors undermining the state’s monopoly of force, or
interference from other nation-states. In Putumayo, however, it was not the national state
apparatus that attempted to safeguard the rights of citizens but rather a criminalized population of
smallholding cocaleros (coca …

National Manufacturing Policy, Local Real Estate Markets, And The Missing Region: Prospects For Urban Industrial Development In The U.S., Laura Wolf-Powers Dec 2014

National Manufacturing Policy, Local Real Estate Markets, And The Missing Region: Prospects For Urban Industrial Development In The U.S., Laura Wolf-Powers

Laura Wolf-Powers

Manufacturing policy and urban and regional policy coexist uncomfortably in the United States. Although many industrialized nations coordinate federal-level technology and innovation strategies with expressly place-based investments in the commercialization of basic research – and, concomitantly, with support for regional networks of small and medium-sized manufacturers – such mechanisms have not been a prominent feature of U.S. policy (Clark 2010).I argue in this chapter that this gap between scales of action in U.S. policy-making makes the project of manufacturing redevelopment in cities problematic. Because of the “missing region,” municipal authorities struggle to meaningfully affect changes in the policy areas most …
