Kingdon's Multiple Streams Approach: What Is The Empirical Impact Of This Universal Theory?, Michael D. Jones Dr. , Paul Cairney

Michael D. Jones

While John Kingdon’s Multiple Streams Approach (MSA) remains a key reference point in the public policy literature, few have attempted to assess MSA holistically. To assess its broader impact and trends in usage, we combine in-depth analysis of representative studies, with comprehensive coverage of MSA-inspired articles, to categorize its impact. We find that Kingdon’s work makes two separate contributions. First, it has contributed to the development of “evolutionary” policy theories such as punctuated equilibrium. Second, it has prompted a large, dedicated, and often empirical, literature. However, most MSA empirical applications only engage with broader policy theory superficially. The two contributions …

The Aboriginal Riverkeeper Team Project - Building Indigenous Knowledge And Skills To Improve Urban Waterways In Sydney's Georges River Catchment, Vanessa Cavanagh Dec 2015

The Aboriginal Riverkeeper Team Project - Building Indigenous Knowledge And Skills To Improve Urban Waterways In Sydney's Georges River Catchment, Vanessa Cavanagh

Vanessa Cavanagh

Indigenous Ranger programs, which are predominantly located in regional and remote areas, are
commendable for their jobs creation, for strengthening of livelihoods of individuals and communities, and for
the cultural and environmental outcomes they engender. However, can similar outcomes be attained in a
highly urban setting? This paper is a case study of a current project, the Aboriginal Riverkeeper Team in the
Georges River in Sydney’s south-west. Through the narrative of the Aboriginal trainees who have been
members of the Aboriginal Riverkeeper Team (‘the Team’), this paper will illustrate how an environmental
project has been successful in delivering significant cultural …

They Fell Silent When We Stopped Listening: Apophatic Theology And 'Asking The Beasts', Eric D. Meyer

Eric Meyer

Fredric Jameson poignantly notes that for those of us formed by the cultures of the West, it is easier to imagine the destruction of the biosphere and the extinction of the majority of earth’s species than the end of global capitalism. Our collective moral imagination has atrophied within the enclosure of a political-economic system whose momentum seems unstoppable, yet whose operation is geared toward the short-term monetary benefit of a tiny minority. We can readily imagine mass extinctions and ecological deterioration because this is the direction that we are already going; we have trouble imagining the end of late capitalism …

The Global Emergence Of Chinese Multinationals: A Resource-Based View Of Ownership And Performance, Xiaoming He, Subrata Chakrabarty, Lorraine Eden Dec 2015

The Global Emergence Of Chinese Multinationals: A Resource-Based View Of Ownership And Performance, Xiaoming He, Subrata Chakrabarty, Lorraine Eden

Subrata Chakrabarty

We apply insights from the resource-based view to better understand the emergence of Chinese multinational companies (MNCs) and to investigate the determinants of their performance. We argue that state ownership and foreign-corporate ownership have played a role in providing Chinese MNCs with access to key resources to improve their performance. Moreover, given the dominant role of government policies in China, Chinese MNCs are more profitable when their ownership structures align more closely with attributes favored by government policies. Our findings provide strong support to our arguments. This study provides new insights into how ownership structure leads to heterogeneity in MNC …

Human–Wildlife Conflict And Coexistence, Philip J. Nyhus Dec 2015

Human–Wildlife Conflict And Coexistence, Philip J. Nyhus

Philip J. Nyhus

Human interactions with wildlife are a defining experience of human existence. These interactions can be positive or negative. People compete with wildlife for food and resources, and have eradicated dangerous species; co-opted and domesticated valuable species; and applied a wide range of social, behavioral, and technical approaches to reduce negative interactions with wildlife. This conflict has led to the extinction and reduction of numerous species and uncountable human deaths and economic losses. Recent advances in our understanding of conflict have led to a growing number of positive conservation and coexistence outcomes. I summarize and synthesize factors that contribute to conflict, …

The Leadership Leap: A Leadership Model, R. Jeffery Maxfield, Gary B. Noll, Rodger Broome Dec 2015

The Leadership Leap: A Leadership Model, R. Jeffery Maxfield, Gary B. Noll, Rodger Broome

R. Jeffery Maxfield

This paper examines the ontological perspective of leadership and leadership education. Leadership, as proposed by Maxfield, Broomé, & Fisher (2015) in the LEAP leadership model is explored in the concepts of legitimacy, ethical and value-based behaviors, affect (emotional intelligence) and persistence. The need for changing leadership curricula and pedagogical paradigms are also explored.

Violent Repression Of Environmental Protests, Helen M. Poulos, Mary Alice Haddad Dec 2015

Violent Repression Of Environmental Protests, Helen M. Poulos, Mary Alice Haddad

Mary Alice Haddad

As global sea levels and natural resource demands rise, people around the world are increasingly protesting environmental threats to their lives and livelihoods. What are the conditions under which these peaceful environmental protests are violently repressed? This paper uses the random forest algorithm to conduct an event analysis of grass- roots environmental protests around the world. Utilizing a database of 175 grassroots environmental protests, we found that: (1) a large proportion (37 %) of the protests involved violent repression; (2) most of the violence (56 %) was directed against marginalized groups; and (3) violence was geographically concentrated the global south …

"And Other Duties As Assigned:" Expanding The Boundaries Of The E- Resource Lifecycle To Get Things Done, Stacy Fowler, Marcella Lesher, Esta Tovstiadi

Stacy Fowler

This presentation focused on how elements of the electronic resource lifecycle, such as those described in the NASIG Core Competencies for Electronic Resource Librarians and the Techniques for Electronic Resource Management, apply to the management of physical library projects, including the weeding and shifting of physical collections, a digitization project, as well as other “duties as assigned” that are part of the average librarian’s workload at a small library. Additionally, this presentation touched on issues related to managing print and electronic collections in law libraries.

Responses Of Four Arthropod Prey Species To Mechanosensory, Chemosensory And Visual Cues From An Arachnid Predator: A Comparative Approach, Scott Kight Dec 2015

Responses Of Four Arthropod Prey Species To Mechanosensory, Chemosensory And Visual Cues From An Arachnid Predator: A Comparative Approach, Scott Kight

Scott Kight

Comparisons of multiple invertebrate prey species to direct predator sensory cues are relatively uncommon. We compared prey responses to arachnid predators (Araneae: Lycosidae) of four species: Blattella germanica (Blattodea: Blattellidae), Acheta domesticus (Orthoptera: Gryllinae), Armadillidium vulgare (Oniscidea: Armadillidae), and Porcellio laevis (Oniscidea: Porcellionidae). Prey experienced combinations of direct mechanosensory, chemosensory or visual cues. All species responded to all cues, but response structure differed among species. Mechanosensory and chemosensory predator cues elicited frequent shifts between behaviors, whereas visual stimuli tended to diminish responses. Mechanosensory stimuli produced the most extreme responses, particularly in crickets and cockroaches, but responses to mechanosensory stimuli diminished …

Predicting Bystander Efficacy And Willingness To Intervene In College Men And Women: The Role Of Exposure To Varying Levels Of Violence In Pornography, John D. Foubert, Ana J. Bridges Ph.D. Dec 2015

Predicting Bystander Efficacy And Willingness To Intervene In College Men And Women: The Role Of Exposure To Varying Levels Of Violence In Pornography, John D. Foubert, Ana J. Bridges Ph.D.

John D. Foubert

Students from two research universities completed items measuring the frequency
of their using different kinds of pornography, and measures of their willingness and
intent to intervene to help a bystander who might be experiencing sexual violence.
Hierarchical logistic regressions showed that for men, violent/degrading pornography
use, but not explicit but non-degrading pornography use, was significantly associated
with reduced bystander willingness to intervene, but not associated with bystander
efficacy. Women did not show the same impact of violent/degrading pornography
use on the two bystander intervention variables. Results suggest violence/degrading
pornography may contribute to a culture of acceptance of violence against women.

Inter-Rater Variability As Mutual Disagreement: Identifying Raters’ Divergent Points Of View, A. Gingerich, Susan E. Ramlo Dec 2015

Inter-Rater Variability As Mutual Disagreement: Identifying Raters’ Divergent Points Of View, A. Gingerich, Susan E. Ramlo

Susan E Ramlo

Whenever multiple observers provide ratings, even of the same performance,
inter-rater variation is prevalent. The resulting ‘idiosyncratic rater variance’ is considered
to be unusable error of measurement in psychometric models and is a threat to the
defensibility of our assessments. Prior studies of inter-rater variation in clinical assessments
have used open response formats to gather raters’ comments and justifications. This
design choice allows participants to use idiosyncratic response styles that could result in a
distorted representation of the underlying rater cognition and skew subsequent analyses. In
this study we explored rater variability using the structured response format of Q
methodology. …

The Shifting Self: Social Identity In Retirement, Frances Smith Dec 2015

The Shifting Self: Social Identity In Retirement, Frances Smith

Frances Smith

Retirement marks an important shift at the end of one’s work life. Social identity theory explains
the way individuals associate identity with particular groups, which may include organizational
affiliation and age. The purpose of this research is to understand how retirees describe changes in
their social identity from the time they were working through retirement. Twenty-three retirees
participated in qualitative interviews to discuss their social identity before and after retirement.
Two themes were discovered. Role shifters described participants whose social identity had shifted
due to the changes they encountered in retirement. New job-same self described retirees who
maintained their social …

Intellectual Capital In Churches: Matching Solution Complexity With Problem Complexity, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

The problems organizations face have varying degrees of
complexity. What is not often understood, however, is that
the knowledge needed to solve these problems also varies
in complexity, and should match the complexity of the
problem itself. The current study provides grounded theory
for how leaders in churches should approach problems
relating to Intellectual Capital (IC) assets. These intangible
assets are crucial to the ability of churches to create value
that enriches the lives of individuals in their communities.
In two, 90-minute focus groups, the leadership team of a
United Methodist Church in South Carolina, USA was
asked about their …

Preaching Motherhood And Womanhood From The Christian Pulpit: Information Dissemination And Use, Darin Freeburg Dec 2015

Preaching Motherhood And Womanhood From The Christian Pulpit: Information Dissemination And Use, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

The sermons clergy preach every Sunday can provide tremendous insight into current religious thinking about motherhood and womanhood. A database of sermons preached by clergy from a sample of Christian churches in the United States was searched for sermons given on Mother's Day 2014. A grounded theory approach explored how clergy framed these constructs. Results show that although clergy tend to frame these concepts in stereotypical ways, there is great complexity in how this is done. Clergy use a variety of information sources to preach on the roles of women and mothers, providing insight into the very construction of these …

Trust And Tithing: The Relationships Between Religious Social Capital And Church Financial Giving, Darin Freeburg Dec 2015

Trust And Tithing: The Relationships Between Religious Social Capital And Church Financial Giving, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

There are a number of motivations for Christians to give financially to a church. The current study looked at Social Capital—especially as it relates to the concept of trust in God and bonds with a church community—to see if relationships exist that suggest a possible motivation for financial giving. Participants from American Protestant churches in the Midwest completed an online survey intended to elicit responses about their church financial giving and their levels of a specific religious measurement of Social Capital (SC). Analysis showed that increased trust in God, as well as increased sense of bonding with others in the …

A Conceptual Framework For Measuring The Effectiveness Of Green Fiscal Reforms, Gilbert E. Metcalf Dec 2015

A Conceptual Framework For Measuring The Effectiveness Of Green Fiscal Reforms, Gilbert E. Metcalf

Gilbert E. Metcalf

This paper provides a conceptual framework for assessing the effectiveness (strengths and weaknesses) of a green fiscal reform. Economic theory is clear on the process for designing efficient environmental policies: eliminate energy production and consumption subsidies and use a Pigouvian fee to send appropriate signals through the market on the optimal use of different energy sources. Beyond that policy prescription, a number of choices remain: use of revenues, costs of administration, monitoring and oversight and other practical issues.
Policies can be assessed along a number of non‐environmental dimensions including potential for raising revenue, efficiency and distributional implications, broader economic impacts …

Tatsushi Arai

This is a final consensus document that 14 civil society delegates from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and the United States produced during a Strait Talk symposium, an annual event held at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA on October 11 through 15, 2016. I served as a dialogue facilitator to support the delegates' conflict analysis, problem solving exercise, and consensus building. This consensus document was then presented in public forums at Brown and Harvard. It is disseminated widely in each of the three societies and beyond to stimulate public discussion on peacebuilding across the Taiwan Strait.

Patience, Persistence, And Process: Embedding A Campus-Wide Information Literacy Program Across The Curriculum, Glenn Johnson-Grau, Susan [Gardner] Archambault, Elisa Acosta, Lindsey Mclean

Susan Gardner Archambault

This article discusses strategies for academic libraries to collaborate with faculty to institutionalize important information literacy training. The discussion is framed around a case study of a medium-sized academic institution in the United States that successfully embedded information literacy concepts into course-level learning outcomes for three required courses in a new core curriculum.
