Influence Of An External Electric Field On The Charge Transfer State Of The Tcne-Trans-Stilbene Molecular Complex, Craig J. Eckhardt
Influence Of An External Electric Field On The Charge Transfer State Of The Tcne-Trans-Stilbene Molecular Complex, Craig J. Eckhardt
Craig J. Eckhardt Publications
An experimental investigation of the effect of an external electric field on the absorption spectrum of the tetracyanoethylene-trans-stilbene molecular complex in cyclohexane solution yielded values of 1.1±0.1 D for the ground state electric dipole moment and 10.5±0.9 D for the change of the electric dipole moment upon transition to the charge transfer excited state. The ground state electric dipole moment determined by the electro-optic effect is in agreement with the value of 1.4±0.5 D obtained from the dielectric constant measurements made on solutions of the complex. The directions of the transition moment, the ground state electric dipole moment, and the …
Schottky Defects In Alkali Halides, Paul D. Schulze, John R. Hardy
Schottky Defects In Alkali Halides, Paul D. Schulze, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
The method of lattice statics and the deformation-dipole model have been applied to Schottky defects in ionic crystals in approximations higher than zero order. For an isolated vacancy, all host-lattice-ion potential energy functions for short-ranged repulsive and Coulomb-defect forces were expanded to terms quadratic in the displacements and dipole moments, and the resulting forces were allowed to act on the first and/or second neighbors to the vacancy. The zero-order Coulomb force was allowed to act on the remainder of the host-lattice ions past first and/or second neighbors. The vacancy and Schottky-pair-formation energies in the 12 Na, K, Rb halides have …
Government Oil Policy And Its Effect On Domestic & Offshore Oil Production, James Owers
Government Oil Policy And Its Effect On Domestic & Offshore Oil Production, James Owers
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
To date the petroleum industry is second only to the Department of Defense in its stimulation of ocean technology. By the end of 1968, American petroleum companies had invested over 13 billion dollars on the continental shelves of the United States. The development of submersibles, man in the sea, instruments, seismic surveys, mapping and charting, and development of ocean structures and engineering have all been profoundly effected by this massive injection of capital. It is obviously of interest, therefore, to consider policies which affect offshore oil exploration and development. This paper is confined to analyzing three such economic policies in …
Underwater Search And Rescue For Non-Military Submersibles, Peter A. Joseph
Underwater Search And Rescue For Non-Military Submersibles, Peter A. Joseph
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
A system of underwater search and rescue for non-military submersibles utilizing a helicopter delivered rescue submersible is proposed. In the last 10 years there has been a substantial increase in manned underwater endeavors. This expansion is expected to continue with increasingly greater emphasis in the recreational field. The necessity to overcome the relatively short iife support of the small recreation submersible dictates a rapid response. This system should be capable of providing the lift necessary to rescue the entrapped personnel by bringing the submersible to the surface. At the present time the Coast Guard must rely on other submersible operators …

Interferometric Studies Of Interstellar Calcium Lines, Laurence A. Marschall, L. M. Hobbs
Interferometric Studies Of Interstellar Calcium Lines, Laurence A. Marschall, L. M. Hobbs
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Interferometric, photoelectric scans of the interstellar calcium K-lines in the spectra of 65 stars are presented. The scans were obtained with a PEPSIOS spectrometer having a passband with a full half-intensity width of 1.0 kms(-1) or 0.013A. The fivefold improvement in resolution over that used by Adams reveals numerous line components which correspond very well to those of the interstellar sodium lines, apart from frequent differences in relative intensities.

Generalized Finite-Geometry Codes, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Luther D. Rudolph
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
A technique is presented for constructing cyclic codes that retain many of the combinatorial properties of finite-geometry codes, but are often superior to geometry codes. It is shown that L-step orthogonalization is applicable to certain subclasses of these codes.

A Spectrophotometric Study Of The Reaction Between Benzoyl Peroxide And N, N-Dimethyl-P-Phenylenediamine, Bertha Cosby King
Master's Theses
A special need for methods to determine low concentrations of organic peroxides originated because of their hazardous and harmful effects, Even the small amounts of organic peroxide formed by autoxidation in ethers exposed to air make the ethers highly explosive and unsuitable for use as anesthesia or laboratory solvents. The formation of organic peroxides in fats and oils causes rancidity. They have been named as pollutants, and some of them are known to have detrimental physiological effects.
The purpose of this research was to improve this method of analysis and to determine better conditions for the measurement of color by …

Digital Computer Modeling Of Limestone Groundwater Systems, John Thrailkill, David P. Beiter
KWRRI Research Reports
Because limestone groundwater flows mainly In discrete openings, limestone aquifers are fundamentally different from aquifers In granular rocks. A digital computer program which simulates flow in a limestone aquifer as a pipe network was written and compared with the Sinkhole Plain aquifer of west-central Kentucky.
A reasonably good fit between observed parameters of the aquifer and those calculated were obtained under assumed conditions of both laminar and turbulent now In the aquifer. The Indicated gross permeablllty of the aquifer is 5600 melnzers with an assumed aquifer thickness of 100 feet. The location and discharge of springs along the streams bounding …
Heats Of Combustion Of Alpha-Methylstyrene Oligomers, Dale Keith Humbert
Heats Of Combustion Of Alpha-Methylstyrene Oligomers, Dale Keith Humbert
Masters Theses
Introduction
The heat of polymerization (∆Hp) of α-methylstyrene (AMS) has been a source of study for many years. The structure of AMS is shown in Figure 1.
The first quantitative work was done by Roberts and Jessup.1 Their values were more positive than those theoretically calculated by Flory2 and compared with ∆Hp data of other systems. This was not totally unexpected and could be satisfactorily explained on the basis of steric hindrance and loss of resonance energy of conjugation. This steric hindrance arose from "head-to-tail" polymerization of the 1, 1-disubstituted ethylene structure.3 Their data …

Electronic Properties Of Fe2+ In Cubic Kmgf3 From Mössbauer Spectroscopy, Richard B. Frankel, J. Chappert, J. R. Regnard, A. Misetich, C. R. Abeledo
Physics
Iron-doped KMgF3 single crystals have been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy of Fe57. Single lines due to Fe2+ and Fe3+ are observed at room temperature. For TK, the Fe2+ line splits into a quadrupole doublet with a splitting ΔEQ=0.44±0.02 mm/sec. Comparison with a random-strain model due to Ham yields a value of 120 cm-1 for the position of the first excited spin-orbit split level. Magnetic hyperfine structure in external magnetic fields at low temperature is observed and analysis yields a value of -495 ±30 kOe for the corepolarization hyperfine field …
Methodological And Validation Study Of Seed Reserves In Desert Soils, David W. Goodall, Stuart Childs, Herman Wiebe
Methodological And Validation Study Of Seed Reserves In Desert Soils, David W. Goodall, Stuart Childs, Herman Wiebe
Memorandum
The development of a method for separating seeds from desert soils, and enumerating them, is described.
In the Great Basin desert, species differed greatly in their depth distribution, some having a peak at or just below the surface, while others were still abundant below 5 cm. Much higher seed densities were found beneath the canopies of shrubs and of tussock grasses than in the inter-spaces; no consistent differences were found, however, associated with the species of the canopy plant, or with distance from its center.
Tentative estimates are given of the seed population in the four validation sites in Curlew …
The Major Contribution Of Leibniz To Infinitesimal Calculus, Carolyn Rhodes
The Major Contribution Of Leibniz To Infinitesimal Calculus, Carolyn Rhodes
Honors Theses
A study of the work of Leibniz is of importance for at least two reasons. In the first place, Leibniz was not alone among great men in presenting in his early works almost all the important mathematical ideas contained in his mature work, In the second place, the main ideas of his philosophy are to be attributed to his mathematical work, not vice versa. He was perhaps, the earliest to realize fully and correctly the important influence of a calculus on discovery. The almost mechanical operations which one goes through when one is using a calculus enables one to discover …
The Regular Polyhedra: A Study In Visual Aids For Teaching Geometry, Sammye Halbert
The Regular Polyhedra: A Study In Visual Aids For Teaching Geometry, Sammye Halbert
Honors Theses
Traditionally, mathematics, past simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, has been taught of as being so boring, irrelevant, and in short, one of the unavoidable evils of school. An advertisement in The Mathematics Teacher expressed the general attitude of many students when it said, "mathematics was invented by an old magician in the desert who, with the help of his talking monkey, bakes equations and cupcakes in the hot sun." It seems that many students think mathematics is just one problem after another that has some mystical answer floating around in the air somewhere. The object is to get that …

A Physical Hydrographic Study Of The Lafayette River, E. Glenn White
OES Theses and Dissertations
A basic investigation of the physical ~properties, temperature, density and current velocity, in the Lafayette River is presented. Graphs of the observations indicata a difference in salinity, density and current velocity- distributions after moderate to heavy rains from the graphs during a dry period. The changes in distribution indicate a change in the classification of the estuary from a type B/C, partially mixed estuary, to a type D, sectionally homogeneous estuary. The estuary is predominantly a well-mixed or sectionally homogeneous estuary.
Changes in salinity, temperature, density and current velocity over tidal cycles are discussed as well as tidal height data. …

The Influence Of The Summer Thermocline On Estuarine Classification In The Chesapeake Bay Entrance, William G. Weiss Jr.
OES Theses and Dissertations
The temperature, salinity, and sigma-t of 397 oceanographic stations taken in the entrance to Chesapeake Bay were plotted using a simple interpolation formula by the lBM 1130 computer. Each station was catalogued by position, tidal stage, season, and estuarine classification. Results indicated increased stratification during the ebb phase of all entrance stations regardless of season. Partially mixed conditions predominate. The influence of the summer thermocline on the stratification caused a slight increase in the summer stratification mean. However, statistical tests showed this summer increase to be insignificant at the 95% level. Detailed classification of tidal stage by estuarine type for …

Continuous Wave Co2 Laser Degradation And Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Organic Polymers., Stanley G. Coloff
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Previous laser-mass spectrometer and laser-gas-chromatographic instruments for study of organic polymer degradation have used high power pulsed lasers (ruby, Nd-glass) which limit sample characterization due to extensive fragmentation.
A new experimental technique has been developed for high temperature pyrolysis and rapid analysis of organic polymers. The experimental technique combines a low power continuous wave CO2 laser for sample pyrolysis and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to analyze degradation products. The laser built for use in this study was a continuous flow CO2 gas-molecular laser excited by high voltage direct current with maximum power of 10 watts at a wavelength of 10600 …

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 5th (1972)
Apart from using 0.005% concentration, the recommended field dose of 0.025% of the anticoagulant is used along with an alternate food for individual rats for a varying number of days. Those that had survived were taken as tolerant, provided they showed an mg/kg intake beyond the tolerance limit, survived a six days of feeding, exhibited bait-shyness and did not exhibit hemorrhage after death. In determining the criteria for tolerance to an anticoagulant by a rat, one should take into account four composite factors. These are, six days of even 0.025% feeding, bait-shyness when alternate food is given, higher mg/kg intake …
