On Maximizing The Average Time At A Goal, S. Demko, Theodore P. Hill
On Maximizing The Average Time At A Goal, S. Demko, Theodore P. Hill
Research Scholars in Residence
In a decision process (gambling or dynamic programming problem) with finite state space and arbitrary decision sets (gambles or actions), there is always available a Markov strategy which uniformly (nearly) maximizes the average time spent at a goal. If the decision sets are closed, there is even a stationary strategy with the same property.Examples are given to show that approximations by discounted or finite horizon payoffs are not useful for the general average reward problem.
Simulated Performance Of A Reduction-Based Multiprocessing System, Robert M. Keller, Frank C. H. Lin
Simulated Performance Of A Reduction-Based Multiprocessing System, Robert M. Keller, Frank C. H. Lin
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Multiprocessing systems have the potential for increasing system speed over what is now offered by device technology. They must provide the means of generating work for the processors, getting the work to processors, and coherently collecting the results from the processors. For most applications, they should also ensure the repeatability of behavior, i.e., determinacy, speed-independence, or elimination of "critical races." Determinacy can be destroyed, for example, by permitting-in separate, concurrent processes statements such as "x: = x + 1" and "if x = 0 then… else…", which share a common variable. Here, there may be a critical race, in that …
Yellow Giants In Young Clusters. I. Photometric Observations, Edward G. Schmidt
Yellow Giants In Young Clusters. I. Photometric Observations, Edward G. Schmidt
Edward Schmidt Publications
To enable a study of the properties of luminous yellow stars, a list has been compiled of 84 stars which appear to be in the appropriate region in the color-magnitude diagrams of 41 young clusters. Proper motions, radial velocities, UBV photometry, and spectral types from the literature have been used in those cases where such data are available to assign membership probabilities. DDO and uvby photometry have also been obtained of most of the stars in the list, and these data are analyzed to remove stars from the sample which have the wrong luminosity or the wrong color excess for …
Full Second-Order Distorted-Wave Calculation Without Approximations For Atomic Excitation By Electron Impact, Don H. Madison
Full Second-Order Distorted-Wave Calculation Without Approximations For Atomic Excitation By Electron Impact, Don H. Madison
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new technique has been developed for evaluating second-order distorted-wave amplitudes for atomic excitation without making any approximations. By this technique, second-order amplitudes with arbitrary distorted waves and arbitrary Green's functions in the interaction can be evaluated with comparable difficulty. The utility of the method is demonstrated through a practical calculation of the second-order distorted-wave approximation for electron excitation of the 2p state of hydrogen.
Identification Of Soil-Water Chemical Parameters For The Prediction And Treatment Of Suspended Solids In Surface Water Reservoirs Of Coal Mine Lands, V. P. Evangelou, J. H. Grove, R. I. Barnhisel
Identification Of Soil-Water Chemical Parameters For The Prediction And Treatment Of Suspended Solids In Surface Water Reservoirs Of Coal Mine Lands, V. P. Evangelou, J. H. Grove, R. I. Barnhisel
KWRRI Research Reports
High concentrations of suspended solids in coal mine sedimentation ponds are a factor in lowering water quality. This study focuses on the influence dissolved solids have on concentration and settling of suspended solids. Water samples from sedimentation ponds in Eastern and Western Kentucky were used to evaluate water composition in such ponds. Spoil samples from surface mine sites in both parts of the state were used to evaluate water composition released from the spoils upon introducing water.
The results demonstrate that water quality emanating from coal spoils of Eastern and Western coal mines is dependent on the type of spoil …
Orvs On The Cape Cod National Seashore, Karen G. Chaffee
Orvs On The Cape Cod National Seashore, Karen G. Chaffee
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
With the creation of a National Seashore, we incur the responsibility of maintaining and preserving it. Since the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961, the use of off-road vehicles (ORV's) has increased dramatically. These vehicles damage the fragile ecosystems of the seashore. The National Park Service Cooperative Research Unit at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst was commissioned to undertake a five year study of the many facets of off-road vehicle impact on beach and dune as well as salt marsh and tidal flats.
Magnetosome Dynamics In Magnetotactic Bacteria, S. Ofer, I. Nowik, E. R. Bauminger, G. C. Papaefthymiou, Richard B. Frankel, Richad P. Blakemore
Magnetosome Dynamics In Magnetotactic Bacteria, S. Ofer, I. Nowik, E. R. Bauminger, G. C. Papaefthymiou, Richard B. Frankel, Richad P. Blakemore
Physics
Diffusive motions of the magnetosomes (enveloped Fe3O4 particles) in the magnetotactic bacterium Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum result in a very broad-line Mössbauer spectrum (T ~ 100 mm/s) above freezing temperatures. The line width increases with increasing temperature. The data are analyzed using a bounded diffusion model to yield the rotational and translational motions of the magnetosomes as well as the effective viscosity of the material surrounding the magnetosomes. The results are <θ2>l/2 < 1.5° and <x2>1/2 < 8.4 Å for the rotational and translational motions, respectively, implying that the particles are fixed in whole cells. The effective viscosity is 10 cP at 295 K and increases with decreasing temperature. Additional Fe3+ material in the cell is shown to be associated with the magnetosomes. Fe2+ material in the cell appears to be …
Onset Of Oscillations In Rayleigh-Benard Convection: Horizontally Unbounded Slab, Boyd F. Edwards, A. L. Fetter
Onset Of Oscillations In Rayleigh-Benard Convection: Horizontally Unbounded Slab, Boyd F. Edwards, A. L. Fetter
All Physics Faculty Publications
Rayleigh–Bénard convection in a laterally unbounded classical fluid layer with low Prandtl number P (ratio of kinematic viscosity to thermal diffusivity) is reexamined. An amplitude expansion with only a few normal modes yields lateral oscillations of the convective rolls, which are therefore only weakly nonlinear. For free boundary conditions, additional modes (absent for rigid boundaries) lead to long wavelength (‘‘hydrodynamic’’) oscillations, with explicit nonlinear distortions in the velocity and temperature fields. For oscillations with rigid boundaries, the finite critical wavenumbers are approximately independent of P for small P, and the calculated Rayleigh number, frequency, and wavenumber at onset agree well …

The Nature Of Supported Co-Mo And Ni-W And Hydrodenitrogenation And Hydrodesulfurization Of Model Compounds, Eric Dadey
The Nature Of Supported Co-Mo And Ni-W And Hydrodenitrogenation And Hydrodesulfurization Of Model Compounds, Eric Dadey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The catalytic vapor-phase isomerization, hydrogenolysis, and/or disproportionation of trimethylbenzen (TMB) over Co-Mo/Al2O3 and Ni-W/Al2O3 was studied at 480°C, 400 psi reactor pressure, and a constant H2 flow. Each catalyst was run in the reduced or sulfided form. The results show a marked difference in the product distributions for each catalyst, which is attributed to differences in the catalysts’ acidities.
The hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of quinolone and the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of benzothiophene were also studied. The compounds were reacted in a 1 liter autoclave at 325°C and varying partial pressures of H2. The …
Triple Trigonometric Series And Their Application To Mixed Boundary Value Problems, Gordon Melrose
Triple Trigonometric Series And Their Application To Mixed Boundary Value Problems, Gordon Melrose
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation the author investigates some triple trigonometric series which occur in the solution of mixed boundary value problems in elasticity and potential theory. By choosing a suitable integral representation for the sequence of unknown constants, the problem is reduced to solving a singular integral equation of the first kind. Twenty four cases in which the integral equation can be solved in closed form are discussed in detail.
In later chapters, the application of triple trigonometric series to problems in physics and engineering is demonstrated and closed form solutions for the physical parameters of interest are obtained.
Estimating The Parameters Of Truncated Distributions, Mukul Mohan Mittal
Estimating The Parameters Of Truncated Distributions, Mukul Mohan Mittal
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
The problem considered here is the estimation of the parameters of some special truncated distributions. If the sample observations are restricted to the interval {O, T} with T known, then it is well known in the literature that the method of maximum likelihood fails to provide a finite estimate, for the mean of an exponential distribution, whenever the sample mean is greater than T/2 (Deemer and Votaw, 1955, Ann. Math. Statist. 26, 498-504). Not so well known is the nonexistence of the maximum likelihood estimator (m.l.e.), under certain conditions, for the scale parameter of a gamma distribution from a truncated …
Block Encoding Of Speech Spectral Principal Components, James R. Holland Jr.
Block Encoding Of Speech Spectral Principal Components, James R. Holland Jr.
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A Karhunen-Loeve series expansion was used to block encode speech spectral principal components as a function of time. Each of ten principal components was first obtained as a linear combination of 2© speech spectral band energies. Using a fixed block length of 10 frames (0.128 s), the K-L basis vectors were computed separately for various speakers for each principal component. In all cases the resulting basis vectors were essentially a set of discrete cosine basis vectors. Synthesis of speech from the block encoded parameters showed that very little information is lost with up to 70% data reduction. The block encoding …
Suboptimal Algorithms For Improvement Of Pipeline Through Insertion Of Delays, Sukhamoy Som
Suboptimal Algorithms For Improvement Of Pipeline Through Insertion Of Delays, Sukhamoy Som
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Pipelining is now widely used in the design of high speed processors in order to overcome the intrinsic speed limitations imposed by the technology. For a good performance and avoidance of internal conflicts, the concurrent operations within different subunits of a pipeline architecture should be properly scheduled This scheduling problem is known to be intrinsically difficult" and a member of the "NP complete class of problems. The aim of this thesis is to develop heuristic suboptimal algorithms whose execution time is a polynomial function of the number of items to be scheduled. Insertion of delay is used as a basic …
Characterization Of Trihalomethane Formation From Proteins In Chlorinated Water, Robert Aaron Kravitz
Characterization Of Trihalomethane Formation From Proteins In Chlorinated Water, Robert Aaron Kravitz
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Traditionally humates have been considered the most significant precursor in the formation of trihalomethanes in finished drinking water. This study investigates another potential precursor, namely proteins. The chlorination of aqueous protein solutions yields significant levels of trihalomethanes in terms of the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 0.100 mg/L imposed by the USEPA. Molar yields for several proteins were determined. The average yield per unit of organic carbon was 0.5% as compared to 0.8% for a humic acid studied. A model protein, bovine serum albumin, was studied extensively to ascertain the effects of total organic carbon, chlorine dose, and time on …

Fourier Series Analysis Of The Relationship Of Morphologic Variations And Bathymetry In Recent Bolivina (Foraminiferida) From The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Anthony Cavedo Gary
OES Theses and Dissertations
Automated video digitization and closed-form Fourier series analysis were used to investigate the applicability of benthic foraminiferal test morphology for paleo-bathymetric/paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Sample relationships and harmonics with the greatest power for discriminating between samples were determined using canonical discriminant analysis. Samples were eleven short cores obtained from the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Three species of Bolivina were analyzed, B. albatrossi, B. lowmani, and B. subspinescens.
Results show populations of Bolivina albatrossi from the upper bathyal and upper-middle bathyal zones to have more triangular tests and lobulate chambers than lower-middle and lower bathyal zone populations. Specimens of Bolivina subspinescens …

Determination Of The Internal Rotational Energy Of Gaseous 1,2-Dichloroethane In An Argon Matrix Using Fourier Transform Spectroscopy, Susan Lynn Clarke
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
A sample cell and delivery system for rapid matrix isolation of gas mixtures at constant gas temperature was designed and evaluated. The rotational energy differences of 1,2-dichlorosthane and of its deuterium compound wars then determined to test this technique.
The rotational energy barriers calculated from Boltzman plots of ths gases at different temperatures were; 1.21 + 0.38 keel/mole, 1.33 + 0.70 Real/mole, and 1.12 + 0.45 kcal/mole for the CH2 wagging„ C-Cl stretching and CD2 wagging modes respectively. These values were in good agreement with previously published values.
These results allowed evaluation of this apparatus and experimental design and …
The Expectation Of Success Using A Monte Carlo Factoring Method – Some Statistics On Quadratic Class Numbers, Duncan A. Buell
The Expectation Of Success Using A Monte Carlo Factoring Method – Some Statistics On Quadratic Class Numbers, Duncan A. Buell
Faculty Publications
A method has been proposed for factoring an integer N by using the structure of the class groups of quadratic fields of radicand – kN for various small multipliers k. We discuss the method and an implementation of the method, and various theoretical questions which have an impact on the practical use of the method in factoring. Some of the theoretical questions relate to the nature of class numbers and class groups; we present extensive statistical results on the class numbers and class groups of imaginary quadratic fields.
Guage Invariant De Gennes Model, Anthony Day, T. Lubensky
Guage Invariant De Gennes Model, Anthony Day, T. Lubensky
Anthony Roy Day
A gauge-invariant formulation of the de Gennes model for the nematic—to—smectic-A transition is presented. In this formulation the energy associated with the gauge field A⃗ reduces to the Frank elastic energy with the application of the constraint n⃗0·A⃗=0 where n⃗0 is the uniform equilibrium director and A⃗ is to be identified with deviations δn⃗ of the director from equilibrium. It is shown that thermodynamic quantities and renormalization-group recursion relations are gauge invariant. All gauge dependence appears in the exponent η describing order-parameter correlations. The gauge invariance of a negative dielectric anisotropy smectic-A in an external electric field is also studied.
