Photoionization Of Chalcogen And Halogen Atoms: Cross Sections And Angular Distributions, Steven T. Manson, Alfred Msezane, Anthony F. Starace, Siamak Shahabi

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The authors present a survey of the photoionization cross sections and photoelectron angular distributions for the outer p subshell of the chalcogen atoms O, S, Se, and Te and the halogen atoms F, Cl, Br, and I. Results are presented in the Hartree-Fock approximation as well as in the central-potential-model approximation. An extensive analysis and comparison of the results obtained is presented which finds that exchange-interaction effects are strongest for the n=3 row elements.

The Division of State Lands desires to manage these lands as efficiently as possible and maximize the rents and thus increase the revenues available …

Enhanced Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Human Serum Albumin In Diabetes Mellitus, C. Earl Guthrow, Mary Ann Morris, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Sep 1979

Enhanced Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Human Serum Albumin In Diabetes Mellitus, C. Earl Guthrow, Mary Ann Morris, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

Use of an ion exchange chromatographic method and a colorimetric method with thiobarbituric acid showed that levels of nonenzymatically glucosylated serum albumin were increased in patients with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus compared to controls. The two methods correlated well (r = 0.99) and clearly discriminated between normal and poorly controlled diabetic populations. The levels of glycosylated hemoglobin were also measured in both populations. Several patients apparently in good control based on glycosylated hemoglobin measurements were found to have increased levels of glycosylated albumin. Because albumin has a shorter circulating half-life than does the human erythrocyte, the plasma concentration of glucosylated …

Heating-Effect Minimization In Dye Lasers, Kenneth Lee Matheson, James M. Thorne Aug 1979

Heating-Effect Minimization In Dye Lasers, Kenneth Lee Matheson, James M. Thorne

Faculty Publications

Optical pumping of dye lasers deposits heat nonuniformly in the active medium. Because the refractive index of a liquid or gas is a function of temperature, gradients are created which refract the laser beam. This effect is sometimes serious enough to quench laser action. In this paper, we evaluate the effects caused by optical pumping with a coaxial flashlamp and suggest ultraviolet absorbers and wavelength shifters as materials for minimizing the problem

Mule Deer Habitat Guidelines, Richard M. Kerr Aug 1979

Mule Deer Habitat Guidelines, Richard M. Kerr

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

The purpose of this Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) Habitat Management Guide is principally to assist BLM managers and biologists in planning for and managing mule deer habitat on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management. For many years Federal land management agencies have made the distinction between the Federal responsibility for managing habitat and the State prerogatives of managing native wild ungulate populations. Certainly the two are inseparably linked. These responsibilities, and up to now "symbiotic relationships", are probably best described succinctly in Title 43 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 24.

Rubidium-Strontium And Related Studies Of The Salado Formation, Southeastern New Mexico, Joseph K. Register Jr. Aug 1979

Rubidium-Strontium And Related Studies Of The Salado Formation, Southeastern New Mexico, Joseph K. Register Jr.

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Salado Formation, a member of the Ochoa Series, is a bedded salt deposit which is found in the Delaware Basin southeastern New Mexico and west Texas. It is comprised primarily of halite and sylvite with minor amounts of sulfate minerals. Rubidium-strontium age determinations of the evaporite minerals in the Salado indicate an age of final equilibration of 214 15 m.y. This age is fairly consistent with the geologic age of the formation, precluding substantial alkali-alkaline earth migration since deposition. Polyhalite and anhydrite samples from the Salado give / values of about .7078, which are consistent with reported valued for …

Physical Consequences Of Anomalies In Nonlocal Potential Problems, L. L. Foldy, James A. Lock Aug 1979

Physical Consequences Of Anomalies In Nonlocal Potential Problems, L. L. Foldy, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

An s-wave two-body separable potential may give rise to several phenomena which are absent for nonsingular local potentials. We examine the physical implications of a well known example of such phenomena, the continuum bound state, as well as of two lesser known anomalies, the so-called positive energy spurious state and negative energy bound states with improper long-range behavior. By examining these anomalies in light of Levinson's theorem, Wigner's phase shift inequality, and the effect of a perturbation on the anomalous states by their insertion in a three-body scattering situation, we find in agreement with previous studies that the continuum bound …

Quasi-Solutions And Their Role In The Qualitative Theory Of Differential Equations, V. Lakshmikantham, K. Deimling Aug 1979

Quasi-Solutions And Their Role In The Qualitative Theory Of Differential Equations, V. Lakshmikantham, K. Deimling

Mathematics Technical Papers

In the study of comparison theorems and extremal solutions for systems of ordinary differential equations [5], one usually imposes a condition on the right hand side known as quasi-monotone nondecreasing property. This property. is also needed in proving comparison theorems for second order, boundary value problems [9] as well as for the initial boundary value problem for parabolic systems [5, 6]. Also, it is well known that in the .method of vector Lyapunov functions which provides an effective tool to investigate the stability of Large Scale Systems [1-4], an unpleasant drawback is the requirement of the quasi-monotone property for the …

Equations With Unbounded Delay: A Survey, V. Lakshmikantham, C. Corduneanu Aug 1979

Equations With Unbounded Delay: A Survey, V. Lakshmikantham, C. Corduneanu

Mathematics Technical Papers

The theory of equations with delay has been considerably developed during the past 30 years. The first book dedicated to this subject has been published by A. D. Myshkis [180], in 1951, and has been subsequently translated into German (1955) and English (1966). A second Russian edition, that came out in 1972, contains a good deal of references and points out interesting features of the theory of linear equations with delayed argument, including also examples of equations with unbounded delay.

Long-Term Effects Of Land Application Of Domestic Wastwater: Tooele, Utah, Slow-Rate Site, Volume 1: Field Investigation, James H. Reynolds, L. R. Anderson, R. W. Miller, W. F. Campbell, M. O. Braun

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Application of wastewater to the land has been designated a viable alternative for wastewater treatment by the Water Pollution Act Amendments of 1972 (PL 92-500). However, very little information is available concerning the long-term effects of applying wastewater to the land. The general objective of this study was to determine the long-term effects of employing secondary treated municipal wastewater as irrigation water. The study compared the quality of soils, crops, groundwater, and applied water to a site receiving normal irrigation water (control site) to a site (treated site) which had utilized seondary treated municipal effluent for irrigation water during a …

Magnetohydrodynamic Effects On The Growth Of Condensations In An Expanding Universe & The Formation Of Galaxies, Charles Evans Aug 1979

Magnetohydrodynamic Effects On The Growth Of Condensations In An Expanding Universe & The Formation Of Galaxies, Charles Evans

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

We review the evidence for existence of a magnetic field of the galaxy and whatever evidence there is of an intergalactic magnetoionic medium. We then consider the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) of such a medium. The formation of galaxies through purely gravitational means in an expanding universe is then reviewed. Next the role of magnetohydrodynamics in such a universe is analyzed for their effects on galaxy formation. Finally, the importance of MED behavior in the early universe is emphasized from physical considerations and from present day evidence. Appendices discuss isotropic cosmologies, magnetic fields in such a background, the detailed MHD perturbations, and …

The Wavelength Dependence Of Herpes Simplex Viral Inactivation & Ultraviolet Enhanced Reactivation, Richard Detsch Aug 1979

The Wavelength Dependence Of Herpes Simplex Viral Inactivation & Ultraviolet Enhanced Reactivation, Richard Detsch

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The degrees of Ultraviolet Enhanced Reactivation (UVR) by mammalian cells of Heroes simplex virus inactivated by different wavelengths of far ultraviolet radiation were measure'. The wavelength dependence of UVR is presented for the wavelength region 238 nm to 297 nm. The shape of the UVR curve suggests that virus directed repair is less dependent on the wavelength of UV radiation than are cellular repair mechanisms. The wavelength dependence of Herpes simplex inactivation by far UV radiation is also presented. The shape of the virus inactivation curve suggests the involvement of both DNA and protein.

Water, Waste And Quality Management During Preparation And Processing Of Vegetables, W. A. Sistrunk Aug 1979

Water, Waste And Quality Management During Preparation And Processing Of Vegetables, W. A. Sistrunk

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The research was designed to test and/or develop new systems of washing, peeling and blanching, develop methods of utilization of solid wastes, and find ways to reduce wastestrength of effluent without affecting quality of vegetables for processing. The highest wastestrength of effluent from vegetable processing in the region was found in plants that were canning Irish potatoes, dry beans and hominy. The high volumes of water used for washing spinach and leafy greens and the physical damage to the washed product is one of the major problems. Repetitive washing of spinach in the same water did not affect quality as …

Culture Shock And Adaptation Among Student Missionaries To Japan, Sheryl J. Craig Aug 1979

Culture Shock And Adaptation Among Student Missionaries To Japan, Sheryl J. Craig

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to delineate certain parameters of the experience of student missionaries to Japan. This study was a longitudinal, descriptive study which identified background characteristics, aspects of the adaptation process, and stages and intensity of culture shock.

A group of twenty-seven student missionaries were followed from their arrival in Japan, which occurred over a three-month summer period, through the following May, just prior to their expected departure. Data were gathered using interviews, questionnaires, a semantic differential (to measure attitudes), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.

The time when subjects were most at risk for high anxiety, poorer …

Oxygen Isotopic Analysis Of Silicates And Oxides Using Both Bromine Pentafluoride And Fluorine Gas As Reagents, Harold Roy Northrop Jul 1979

Oxygen Isotopic Analysis Of Silicates And Oxides Using Both Bromine Pentafluoride And Fluorine Gas As Reagents, Harold Roy Northrop

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

In recent years the preferred analytical procedure for the extraction of oxygen from silicates and oxides for oxygen isotope analysis has been the oxidation of the samples with either fluorine (F2) or bromine pentafluoride (BrF5) to produce oxygen. Several standards are available for monitoring the extraction procedure, and one in particular (NBS-28) is used in many laboratories. The oxygen-18 oxygen-16 ratios obtained for NBS-28 vary by as much as one permil between laboratories. The major cause of this variation lies in the extraction procedure used. Extraction of oxygen from iron bearing minerals and whole rocks (and minerals containing certain other …
