Evolved Contact Systems Of Spectral Type A: Au Puppis, V535 Arae, And V1073 Cygni, Kam-Ching Leung, Donald P. Schneider

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The photoelectric observations of AU Pup, V535 Ara, and V1073 Cyg were reanalyzed with Wilson and Devinney's approach. All three systems are found to be contact configurations. AU Pup has an unusually large degree of overcontact, 72%. V1073 Cyg is found to be an evolved contact system since the radius of the primary is twice that of a zero-age main-sequence star of corresponding mass. All three systems are found to be evolved according to their locations in the period-spectral-type diagram. Improved photometric parameters are reported for all three systems.

Studies On The Role Of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation In "Natural" Water Purification By Aquatic Ecosystems, John Calkins, Jeanne A. Barcelo, Perry Grigsby, Stephen Martin Jan 1978

Studies On The Role Of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation In "Natural" Water Purification By Aquatic Ecosystems, John Calkins, Jeanne A. Barcelo, Perry Grigsby, Stephen Martin

KWRRI Research Reports

The possibility that pollution might deplete the stratospheric ozone layer and intensify solar UV at the earth's surface focuses attention on the role of solar UV in the various ecosystems at the earth's surface. Previous studies suggested that solar UV might contribute to bacterial die off in wastewater and the studies reported here were directed toward elucidating the action of solar UV in "natural" waters.

It has been assumed that solar UV action on aquatic ecosystems can be evaluated (using proper models) on the basis of the following four independently measurable quantities: I) the intensity of solar UV at the …

Hydrology And Water Quality In The Central Kentucky Karst: Phase Ii Part A: Preliminary Summary Of The Hydrogeology Of The Mill Hole Sub-Basin Of The Turnhole Spring Groundwater Basin, James F. Quinlan, Donald R. Rowe

KWRRI Research Reports

Water from upland areas flows to small ephemeral and perennial springs that feed sinking streams that are tributary to low-order cave streams. These cave streams, also recharged by diffuse percolation, are part of a dendritic network in which intermediate-order streams join high-order streams that flow to major trunk streams. The trunk in the Mill Hole Sub-basin flows across the bottom of a large karst window, Mill Hole, and joins the trunk of the Patoka Creek Sub-basin. Their combined discharge bifurcates, flows around the collapsed central core of a larger karst window, Cedar Sink, and re-joins to flow as one to …

Evaluation Of Salinity And Temperature As Stress Factors Affecting The Enumeration Of Fecal Coliforms By The Electrochemical Detection Method, Howard I. Kator, Martha W. Rhodes

Reports

The ability of an electrochemical detection method to predict viable numbers of fecal coliforms was evaluated under laboratory conditions with respect to seawater adjusted to various salinities and temperatures. The viability of an Escherchia coli isolat~ as measured by the spread plate technique utilizing non-selective media was unaffected after 12 wk exposure at 2°C and 25 °100 salinity. At higher temperatures (15-30°C) both the total decrease in cell numbers as well as the rates of die-off were greater than at 2°C. There was little apparent difference in viability across the temperature range 15-30°C. Viability was observed to be inversely related …

Depositional Systems Of The Sells And Cecil Sandstones, Atoka Formation (Pennsylvanian), Eastern Crawford And Western Franklin Counties, Arkansas, Chris A. Cardneaux Jan 1978

Depositional Systems Of The Sells And Cecil Sandstones, Atoka Formation (Pennsylvanian), Eastern Crawford And Western Franklin Counties, Arkansas, Chris A. Cardneaux

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Cecil and Sells sandstones of the Atoka Formation (Pennsylvanian) were studied in the subsurface of eastern Crawford and western Franklin Counties. Sand of the Cecil sandstone was delivered to a high destructive, wave dominated delta southeast of Fort Smith and reworked laterally by longshore currents to form coastal barrier sands to the east. The Sells sandstone unit accumulated as a distributary channel system that bifurcates to the southeast and southwest. The interdistributary areas are characterized by immature sands interbedded with shales. These immature sands were deposited by crevasse splays and reworking of the distributary mouth bars by marine processes …

Geometry And Depositional Systems Of The Orr And Patterson Sands, Bloyd Formation (Pennsylvanian), Eastern Franklin And Western Johnson Counties, Arkansas, Michael E. Corbin

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Orr and Patterson sandstones occur in the Trace Creek Shale Member, Bloyd Formation, in surface exposures on the northern Arkansas structural platform. The Orr sandstone exhibits regional thickening trends to the south and southeast into the Arkoma Basin as shown by isolith maps for the area studied. The depositional environment that formed this sandstone comprised fluvial or deltaic channels feeding a destructive delta system to the southeast. The Patterson sandstone lies stratigraphically above the Orr sandstone, and is confined essentially to Franklin and Johnson counties. It is poorly developed or not present in Washington and western Crawford Counties. The …

Depuration Of Kepone By Atlantic Croaker In A Laboratory Study, Robert T. Doyle, J. V. Merriner, M. E. Bender Jan 1978

Depuration Of Kepone By Atlantic Croaker In A Laboratory Study, Robert T. Doyle, J. V. Merriner, M. E. Bender

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Contamination of the James River in Virginia by the organochlorine pesticide Kepone R prompted depuration studies of commercially important species. Approximately 400 croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) were taken from the James River and placed in Kepone-free York River water. Groups of 20 fish, maintained at ambient temperature, were sampled over time to determine depuration rate. Results suggest that there is no substantial depuration of Kepone by croaker until water temperature exceeds 15 C.

Pennsylvanian And Early Permian Depositional Framework, Southeastern Arizona, Charles A. Ross

Geology Faculty Publications

This summary of the Pennsylvanian and Early Permian depositional framework in southeastern Arizona and adjacent regions is based in large part on the data and conclusions presented earlier in more detail by Ross (1973, 1978). The general stratigraphy of the Pedregosa, Orogrande and Permian basins and much of the literature has recently been summarized by Greenwood and others (1977).

In southeastern Arizona, Pennsylvanian and Permian strata are well exposed in many of the Basin and Range uplifts, where they may be studied in considerable detail. Mesozoic and Cenozoic structures, including local thrust faulting, and the attendant possibility of considerable lateral …

A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor Jan 1978

A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

One of the most important game birds in the United States is the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). This Asian refugee has provided recreation for untold numbers of sportsmen. Its presence has meant millions of dollars for state game agency coffers, not to mention its impact on local economies. Pheasant populations have fluctuated widely in past years, but the overall trend since the early 1960's has been downward over most of the pheasant range. This decline was caused primarily by loss of habitat due to change in agricultural land use (Mohlis 1974, Dahlgren 1963, Kobriger 1972, Taylor et al. …

Information Systems For Natural Resources Managers: An Exercise In Interfacing, Connie L. Knapp Jan 1978

Information Systems For Natural Resources Managers: An Exercise In Interfacing, Connie L. Knapp

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This thesis proposes guidelines for achieving the human interfaces which are requisite to the development and operation of natural resources information systems. Conclusions were drawn from an evaluation of past experiences in building and attempting to use these types of systems. Both successful and unsuccessful systems were considered, as well as the current effort in Rhode Island to develop a system for coastal resources managers. Examples are presented to support particular conclusions and recommendations. The perspective is nontechnical. Examples and recommendations, therefore, are conceptual rather than quantitative or technical. While a variety of mechanisms can be used to achieve the …

Concrete Ships, Mark L. Lavache Jan 1978

Concrete Ships, Mark L. Lavache

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The incentive behind this study is based on a two-fold premise: 1) that a comprehensive outline of the historical development of concrete shipbuilding and its related technologies is either non-existent or defies discovery, and 2) that although this study is neither based on a hypothesis, nor intended to resolve a problem area or promote a position, its merit lies in its inductive nature. Included are explanations of of the various compositions, uses, and construction techniques relating to reinforced concrete, ferro-cement, and prestressed concrete.

Interagency Conflict And Its Effect On Intermodal Shipping, Gerald Seifert Jan 1978

Interagency Conflict And Its Effect On Intermodal Shipping, Gerald Seifert

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The movement of goods by more than one mode of transportation in a single container has been viewed by some in the marine component of the transportation industry as a transformation a important as the coming of steam. Concerns with intermodalism and the difficulties faced in addressing the needs presented by the technologically enhanced maritime transportation industry do not start with the invention of the first multi-package container capable of being moved by several modes of transportation without need to repack; they start with an exploration of the perceived need to regulate the several components of the transportation industry, the …

A Proposal For A World Ocean Management Authority: As An Alternative Ocean Regime To Meet The Challenge Of The Management And Utilization Of Collective Ocean Activities, Simon W. Tache

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The oceans may be an alternative source of resource supply offering the opportunity for extensive practical uses. A number of ocean systems have been instituted to manage the exploitation of ocean resources including the practice of states to negotiate and enter into bilateral and multilateral agreements on a variety of ocean activities; but the complexities as well as the tendency of some of these ocean uses to generate extraterritorial effects, accentuate the need for a global response to alleviate these problems. Isolated individual national regulations and standards lack international uniformity to ensure adequate and rational utilization of the oceans and …

A National Approach For Marine Scientific Research In Exclusive Economic Zones, Thomas H. Brillat Jan 1978

A National Approach For Marine Scientific Research In Exclusive Economic Zones, Thomas H. Brillat

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

After years of constant negotiations at the Third United Nations Conference of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III), no new codified law for the seas has been produced. It appears certain, though, that countries throughout the world will exercise some form of sovereignty or national jurisdiction over an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) extending 188 miles into the ocean beyond a twelve mile territorial sea. Included in this jurisdiction will be the control of marine scientific research (MSR). A need has arisen to establish a uniform procedure for the conduct of MSR to the mutual advantages of the coastal state, …

Soil Salinity In Western Australia : A Summary, T C. Stoneman Jan 1978

Soil Salinity In Western Australia : A Summary, T C. Stoneman

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Soil salinity problems have long been recognised in Western Australia. The earliest published explanation in 1924 suggested that removing native vegetation increased stream salinity, and this basic cause has been confirmed by many studies since.
