"The purpose of this research is to investigate possible methods of determining the thermal conductivity of small poorly conducting samples at elevated temperatures, and, further, to assemble a suitable apparatus, followed by measurement of thermal conductivity of one or more cubic lattice samples.

Basic requirements of the apparatus are few. It is first required that the measurement of thermal conductivity be made over a considerable range temperature. It is also preferred that the basic apparatus be placed in a vacuum where undesirable heat flow by convection is eliminated and air corrodible samples are preserved.

"Samples of coal were taken at three inch intervals vertically down the Bevier seam at three localities in Macon and Randolph Counties. Channel samples were collected at the three localities. All samples were analyzed for ash content, total sulphur content, crucible swelling number, and volatile content. The channel samples were analyzed for "pyritic" sulphur, “sulphate" sulphur, and "organic" sulphur. Thin sections of the samples were used in an estimation of anthraxylon and attritus contents.

In all the samples studied, volatile content of the coal seemed to be related to the ash content and the sulphur content. Crucible swelling number also …

"This problem is an attempt to correlate grade of metamorphism (normally assumed to be temperature dependent) with the shape and dimensions of a solid miscibility gap. Such a correlation might permit mapping of a continuously variable function of metamorphism. The system, calcite and dolomite-ankerite, was chosen for study because of its relative simplicity. Samples of quartz-carbonate granulite were collected from the Waits River formation in southeastern Vermont through a range of metamorphic grades. Refractive index, "molecular" volume, manganese content, and density were determined for the carbonates of four of these samples. These values are plotted on a compositional diagram to …

"The fluorescence of uranium finds its greatest application in the so-called "bead test" which is a method of qualitative analysis. In the form of a bead, the uranium is in solid solution, and if the proper chemical solvent is used, the bead will fluoresce under ultraviolet radiation.

In the systematic separation of the metallic elements, uranium is associated with the aluminum group in that it is not precipitated by hydrogen sulfide in 0.3 N H ion but is precipitated by ammonium hydroxide and ammonium sulfide. "This study was completed to determine whether geochemical methods of prospecting could be applied to the search for fluorspar deposits in the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district.

During the course of the study, aspects of the geochemical cycle of fluorine under the climatic environment encountered were noted in the zone of weathering.

The Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district supplies a large portion of the fluorite consumed in the United States. The producing deposits are of two geologic types. The vein deposits occur as nearly vertical tabular lenses or pods which occupy fractures. These deposits may reach the bedrock surface, but in any case, the …

"The object of this research was to prepare first the simplest homologue of the epoxy-ketone considered by Russell to have been his product. If this homologue, 4-benzoyl-4-methyl-1,2-epoxypentane, could be prepared and caused to form a cyclic derivative of the type given by 1,4-diketones with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone, the organic chemist would be given a new approach to substituted 1,2-diazines as well as a previously unreported reaction of the epoxide grouping. If this reaction could be made to occur, other epoxides of this series would be prepared and treated in the same manner.

"The study of the thermodynamic properties of solids at low temperatures has shown that most theories either break down or become too cumbersome.

A theory based upon a crystal lattice of atoms gives the best physical picture of a solid. Fisher has developed partition functions from this theory for the simple cubic, body-centered cubic, and the face-centered cubic lattices. In his paper Fisher gave three partition functions of increasing complexity and accuracy for each of the three lattices. In this paper the three partition functions for a face-centered cubic lattice shall be applied to silver and compared.

"Fossil Radiolaria are described and figured from the Porters Creek formation (Paleocene) of Ardeola, Stoddard County Missouri. This is the first detailed treatment of fossil radiolarians from the Gulf Coast area. Thirty-one species are described and figured, all believed to be new, belonging to twenty-four genera. Fifteen families are represented, ten referable to the Legion Spumellaria, five to the Legion Nassellaria. "Limestones or shaly limestones, from four stratigraphic levels in the Cherokee group (Desmoinesian series) of Missouri and Kansas, contain eight species and two varieties of fusulinid foraminifera, of which four species and two varieties are new, and one ophthalmidiid foraminiferal species (Hemigordius cf. regularis Plummer). The next to highest limestone (cap rock of the Fleming coal) is correlated with the Seahorne limestone of western Illinois, the Stonefort limestone of southern Illinois, and the Munterville limestone of Iowa. Hemigordius regularis, a limestone facies foraminifer apparently marks a correlatable interval in the Ardmore limestone. Descriptions of the fusulinids and the …
