Mchm (4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol) Influences The Predator-Prey Interaction Between Danio Rerio And Daphnia Magna, Anna C. Wagner Jan 2018

Mchm (4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol) Influences The Predator-Prey Interaction Between Danio Rerio And Daphnia Magna, Anna C. Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chemical contamination alters organism-level traits, such as activity and feeding, that can ultimately affect aquatic trophic interactions. Despite the importance of predator-prey relationships in aquatic communities, chemical toxicity is often tested on single species prior to use. For example, 4-methylcyclohexane methanol (MCHM) used in industrial coal-cleaning enters the environment regularly from low-level contamination during disposal and occasionally in high concentrations following accidental spills, but its effects on fish-zooplankton interactions remain unknown. It was hypothesized MCHM exposure affects zebrafish and D. magna swimming behavior differently when exposed individually or together, and ultimately affects their relationship. Zebrafish and D. magna were exposed …

Development Of Biclustering Techniques For Gene Expression Data Modeling And Mining, Juan Xie Jan 2018

Development Of Biclustering Techniques For Gene Expression Data Modeling And Mining, Juan Xie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The next-generation sequencing technologies can generate large-scale biological data with higher resolution, better accuracy, and lower technical variation than the arraybased counterparts. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) can generate genome-scale gene expression data in biological samples at a given moment, facilitating a better understanding of cell functions at genetic and cellular levels. The abundance of gene expression datasets provides an opportunity to identify genes with similar expression patterns across multiple conditions, i.e., co-expression gene modules (CEMs). Genomescale identification of CEMs can be modeled and solved by biclustering, a twodimensional data mining technique that allows clustering of rows and columns in a gene …

Evaluation Of Methods Used To Improve Grasslands As Ring-Necked Pheasant (Phasianus Colchicus) Brood Habitat, Mandy Orth Jan 2018

Evaluation Of Methods Used To Improve Grasslands As Ring-Necked Pheasant (Phasianus Colchicus) Brood Habitat, Mandy Orth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Management practices designed for upland game species often focus on nest survival and hen winter survival due to the importance of these life history stages on population vital rates. However, chick survival is an important component of gallinaceous bird population dynamics, but it is poorly understood and often tends to be overlooked. Ideal brood habitat not only provides open understory for easy movement and canopy cover for protection, but also provides an abundance of arthropod foods for chicks. It has been hypothesized that restricted movement of chicks through thick vegetation in unmanaged grasslands results in lower brood survival rates. Research …

Modeling Soil Organic Carbon In Select Soils Of Southeastern South Dakota, Shaina Westhoff Jan 2018

Modeling Soil Organic Carbon In Select Soils Of Southeastern South Dakota, Shaina Westhoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil organic matter (SOM) is composed of living biomass, dead plant and animal residues, and humus. Humus is a class of complex, organic molecules that are largely responsible for improving soil water holding capacity, nutrient mineralization, nutrient storage, and other critical soil functions. Soil organic carbon (SOC) accounts for approximately 60 percent of SOM and thus SOC is recognized as a strong indicator of soil health. Land use changes and intense cultivation of arable soils in the United States over the past century have led to large decreases in SOM. The objective of this research was to develop a multiple …

Satellite Remote Sensing Of Woody And Herbaceous Leaf Area For Improved Understanding Of Forage Resources And Fire In Africa, Milkah Njoki Kahiu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) tree-grass systems commonly referred to as savannas dominating drylands, play a critical role in social, cultural, economic and environmental systems. These coupled natural-human systems support millions of people through pastoralism, are important global biodiversity hotspots and play a critical role in global biogeochemical cycles. Despite the importance of SSA savannas, they have been marginalized for years as most governments neglect dryland resources in favor of agricultural research and development assistance. Hence, lack of spatially and temporally accurate information on the status and trends in savanna resources has led to poor planning and management. This scenario calls …

Aspects Of White-Tailed Deer Ecology And Management: Effects Of Imidacloprid And An Evaluation Of Management At Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Elise Hughes Berheim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

White-tail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are an economically and recreationally important species throughout their range, and understanding their ecology to implement beneficial management techniques is invaluable. This thesis focused on two studies 1) the effect of Imidacloprid on adult female and fawn physiology and 2) an evaluation of techniques to monitor white-tailed deer at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge (GSNWR). Imidacloprid, a widely-used pesticide, has been linked to lethal and sub-lethal effects in insects and small vertebrates, however, no research has been conducted on white-tailed deer. Twenty captive pregnant adult female and subsequent fawns housed at the South Dakota …

Role Of Non-Muscle Myosin Ii In Hs578t/Hs578ts(I)8 Triple Negative Breast Cancer Progression, Shimara Gunawardana Jan 2018

Role Of Non-Muscle Myosin Ii In Hs578t/Hs578ts(I)8 Triple Negative Breast Cancer Progression, Shimara Gunawardana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Loss of cell-cell adhesion and migration are prerequisites for the formation of metastases. These events are mediated by changes in the actomyosin cytoskeleton. Nonmuscle myosin II (NMII) belongs to the myosin superfamily of motor proteins which binds to actin and controls actin cross-linking and contraction, however its role and regulation in cell-adhesion and migration remains poorly understood. In this study, we report that associations of α5β1integrin receptors and Ncadherins with NMII isoforms NM-IIA and NMII-B correlate with increased cell-cell adhesion and reduced migratory behavior of the parental Hs578T cells of the Hs578T/Hs578Ts(i)8 triple-negative breast cancer progression model. Using blebbistatin, a …

This dissertation is an investigation of the nanoscale characteristics and mechanism of electrolessly deposited silver metal seeded by gold nanoparticles. The process of growing seed-nanoparticles on a polymer surface was studied. Several bifunctional amines and organic reducing agents were used to explore how these chemical factors affect the size and distribution of gold nanoparticles formed at the interface. The nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). An electroless deposition (ED) bath developed by Danscher was selected to study electroless deposition of silver in detail. The chemical species in the bath …

Advancing Practical Specification Techniques For Modern Software Systems, John Singleton Jan 2018

Advancing Practical Specification Techniques For Modern Software Systems, John Singleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pervasive nature of software (and the tendency for it to contain errors) has long been a concern of theoretical computer scientists. Many investigators have endeavored to produce theories, tools, and techniques for verifying the behavior of software systems. One of the most promising lines of research is that of formal specification, which is a subset of the larger field of formal methods. In formal specification, one composes a precise mathematical description of a software system and uses tools and techniques to ensure that the software that has been written conforms to this specification. Examples of such systems are Z …

Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Photonics For Electro-Optics, Nonlinear Optics, And Quantum Optics On Silicon, Ashutosh Rao Jan 2018

Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Photonics For Electro-Optics, Nonlinear Optics, And Quantum Optics On Silicon, Ashutosh Rao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ion-sliced thin-film lithium niobate (LN) compact waveguide technology has facilitated the resurgence of integrated photonics based on lithium niobate. These thin-film LN waveguides offer over an order of magnitude improvement in optical confinement, and about two orders of magnitude reduction in waveguide bending radius, compared to conventional LN waveguides. Harnessing the improved confinement, a variety of miniaturized and efficient photonic devices are demonstrated in this work. First, two types of compact electrooptic modulators are presented – microring modulators, and Mach-Zehnder modulators. Next, two distinct approaches to nonlinear optical frequency converters are implemented – periodically poled lithium niobate, and mode shape …

Determining The Small-Scale Structure And Particle Properties In Saturn's Rings From Stellar And Radio Occultations, Richard Jerousek Jan 2018

Determining The Small-Scale Structure And Particle Properties In Saturn's Rings From Stellar And Radio Occultations, Richard Jerousek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Saturn's rings consist of icy particles of various sizes ranging from millimeters to several meters. Particles may aggregate into ephemeral elongated clumps known as self-gravity wakes in regions where the surface mass density and epicyclic frequency give a Toomre critical wavelength which is much larger than the largest individual particles (Julian and Toomre 1966). Optical depth measurements at different wavelengths can be used to constrain the sizes of individual particles (Zebker et al. 1985, Marouf et al. 1983) while measurements of optical depths spanning many viewing geometries can be used to determine the properties of self-gravity wakes (Colwell et al. …

Development And Characterization Of Solid-Contact Paper-Based And Micro Ion-Selective Electrodes For Environmental Analysis, Stephanie Armas Jan 2018

Development And Characterization Of Solid-Contact Paper-Based And Micro Ion-Selective Electrodes For Environmental Analysis, Stephanie Armas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) have extensively been used for food analysis, as medical diagnostic tools, and for some environmental applications. However, ISEs are hindered by the need of a bulky reference electrode and the pre-conditioning step of the sensor, which can often be lengthy. This work will discuss how the direct addition of target analyte into the cocktail sensing membrane can circumvent the pre-conditioning step. Furthermore, the work is presented in an optimized ready-to-use single strip design, where the bulky glass reference electrode (RE) is no longer needed. The bulky RE was replaced by drop casting a simple two-component mixture consisting …

Quantitative Line Assignment In Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Jessica Chappell Jan 2018

Quantitative Line Assignment In Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Jessica Chappell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quantitative elemental analysis using Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) starts with a high level of confidence in spectral line assignment from reference databases. Spectral interferences caused by instrumental and line broadening decrease the resolution of OES spectra creating uncertainty in the elemental profile of a sample for the first time. An approach has been developed to quantify spectral interferences for individual line assignment in OES. The algorithm calculates a statistical interference factor (SIF) that combines a physical understanding of plasma emission with a Bayesian analysis of the OES spectrum. It can be used on a single optical spectrum and still address …

Evolution And Distribution Of Phenotypic Diversity In The Venom Of Mojave Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Scutulatus), Jason Strickland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Intraspecific phenotype diversity allows for local adaption and the ability for species to respond to changing environmental conditions, enhancing survivability. Phenotypic variation could be stochastic, genetically based, and/or the result of different environmental conditions. Mojave Rattlesnakes, Crotalus scutulatus, are known to have high intraspecific venom variation, but the geographic extent of the variation and factors influencing venom evolution are poorly understood. Three primary venom types have been described in this species based on the presence (Type A) or absence (Type B) of a neurotoxic phospholipase A2 called Mojave toxin and an inverse relationship with the presence of snake venom metalloproteinases …

Qualitative And Quantitative Elemental Composition Analysis Of The Surrounding Pollen Coating Via Icp-Ms, Brandy Voyer Jan 2018

Qualitative And Quantitative Elemental Composition Analysis Of The Surrounding Pollen Coating Via Icp-Ms, Brandy Voyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pollen evidence has proven to be a powerful forensic tool to trace a suspect or item to a victim or a crime scene. This is possible because it is microscopic, abundant in nature, resistant to degradation and decay; it presents dispersal patterns that can be used to generate a 'fingerprint' within specific areas, and has illustrated a unique morphology that can be used to classify species. While the pollen grain morphology has been extensively used to characterize the specific species, not much has been investigated as pertains to the coating that surrounds the pollen grain aside from it being categorized …

Trust-Based Rating Prediction And Malicious Profile Detection In Online Social Recommender Systems, Anahita Davoudi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Online social networks and recommender systems have become an effective channel for influencing millions of users by facilitating exchange and spread of information. This dissertation addresses multiple challenges that are faced by online social recommender systems such as: i) finding the extent of information spread; ii) predicting the rating of a product; and iii) detecting malicious profiles. Most of the research in this area do not capture the social interactions and rely on empirical or statistical approaches without considering the temporal aspects. We capture the temporal spread of information using a probabilistic model and use non-linear differential equations to model …

Human Action Detection, Tracking And Segmentation In Videos, Yicong Tian Jan 2018

Human Action Detection, Tracking And Segmentation In Videos, Yicong Tian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the problem of human action detection, human tracking and segmentation in videos. They are fundamental tasks in computer vision and are extremely challenging to solve in realistic videos. We first propose a novel approach for action detection by exploring the generalization of deformable part models from 2D images to 3D spatiotemporal volumes. By focusing on the most distinctive parts of each action, our models adapt to intra-class variation and show robustness to clutter. This approach deals with detecting action performed by a single person. When there are multiple humans in the scene, humans need to be segmented …

Multiclass Classification Of Risk Factors For Cervical Cancer Using Artificial Neural Networks, Abdullah Al Mamun Jan 2018

Multiclass Classification Of Risk Factors For Cervical Cancer Using Artificial Neural Networks, Abdullah Al Mamun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

World Health Organization statistics show that cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer in women with an estimated 530,000 new cases in 2012. Cervical cancer diagnosis typically involves liquid-based cytology (LBC) followed by a pathologist review. The accuracy of decision is therefore highly influenced by the expert’s skills and experience, resulting in relatively high false positive and/or false negative rates. Moreover, given the fact that the data being analyzed is highly dimensional, same reviewer’s decision is inherently affected by inconsistencies in interpreting the data. In this study, we use an Artificial Neural Network based model that aims to considerably …

Sparse Trees With A Given Degree Sequence, Ao Shen Jan 2018

Sparse Trees With A Given Degree Sequence, Ao Shen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we consider the properties of sparse trees and summarized a certain class of trees under some constraint (including with a given degree sequence, with given number of leaves, with given maximum degree, etc.) which have maximum Wiener index and the minimum number of subtrees at the same time. Wiener index is one of the most important topological indices in chemical graph theory. Steiner k Wiener index can be regarded as the generalization of Wiener index, when k = 2, Steiner Wiener index is the same as Wiener index. Steiner k Wiener index of a tree T is …

Categories Of Residuated Lattices, Daniel Wesley Fussner Jan 2018

Categories Of Residuated Lattices, Daniel Wesley Fussner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We present dual variants of two algebraic constructions of certain classes of residuated lattices: The Galatos-Raftery construction of Sugihara monoids and their bounded expansions, and the Aguzzoli-Flaminio-Ugolini quadruples construction of srDL-algebras. Our dual presentation of these constructions is facilitated by both new algebraic results, and new duality-theoretic tools. On the algebraic front, we provide a complete description of implications among nontrivial distribution properties in the context of lattice-ordered structures equipped with a residuated binary operation. We also offer some new results about forbidden configurations in lattices endowed with an order-reversing involution. On the duality-theoretic front, we present new results on …

Their concentrations in the atmosphere are increasing and becoming an ever increasing issue as the Earth’s average temperature continues to rise. Agricultural practices, such as applying nitrogen fertilizer to increase crop yield can be a major source of GHG emissions and methods are needed to decrease these emissions. The measurements of GHG emissions have been difficult, expensive, and erratic. However, advancing technologies have increased the accuracy and confidence in measuring GHG emissions. The objectives of this study were to determine the 1) effects of different nitrogen fertilizer sources, …

Synthesis, Characterization And Molecular Dynamic Simulations Of Aqueous Choline Chloride Deep Eutectic Solvents, Sampson Asare Jan 2018

Synthesis, Characterization And Molecular Dynamic Simulations Of Aqueous Choline Chloride Deep Eutectic Solvents, Sampson Asare

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various forms of deep eutectic solvents have been synthesized with advantages of 100% atom economy, low vapor pressure, ease of preparation, cost efficiency, low toxicity, and tunability. Though several DESs have been synthesized and characterized, including binary and ternary solvents, none of the binary DESs have been formulated with water as the sole hydrogen bond donor(HBD). This is due to a couple of opinions. First, water is disruptive to the eutectic bond in tertiary DES. Secondly, the ubiquity and concentration of water even in natural systems have led to the assertion that a solution rather than a eutectic solvent will …
