An Exploratory Investigation Of The Indifferent Pattern Of Accommodation To Work-Related Organizations, John E. Blissick

Masters Theses

Introduction

In recent years there has been growing interest in the nature of workers' attitudes, values, and behavior.1 One area of special concern has been a particular behavior pattern frequently observed among blue collar workers called indifference, and it generally refers to a lack of identification with one's work and work organization. Indifference is a phenomenon which occurs among almost all major groups of workers to some degree, but it has been observed most often and in its most intense forms among blue collar workers. In various forms it has been called apathy, noninvolvement, and un-affectedness. It has been …

Land Utilization In The Allegan State Forest: A Historical Geography, Martin Lemerand

Masters Theses

Introduction

In Allegan County, Michigan, there exists an area of land known as the Allegan State Forest (Figs. 1 and 2). The Forest compromises 35,755 acres of land and is located just west of the city of Allegan.1 It is an area primarily noted for its forestry, wildfire conservation, and recreational facilities. Before becoming a state forest and prior to the 1930's, this land passed through sequential occupance by Indians, pioneers, lumberman, and farmers. When the forest area was first settled, the land was abundantly covered with trees. The trees soon became the victims of the lumbermen's axe, and …

Kalamazoo, Michigan, And The Formation Of The Republican Party Of Michigan, James M. Rigterink

Masters Theses

Introduction

When Judge Levi Baxter rapped for order in the afternoon of July 6, 1854, at Jackson, Michigan, his gavel echoed the discontent gripping the Old Northwest. "Fellow citizens of Michigan...," he said, "let us bow our heads and pray for success in the great enterprise which has brought us here."1 In the oak grove the heads of 4,000 people of conviction bowed in agreement.2 By evening of that day the Republican party of Michigan was an accomplished fact.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the background of the Jackson convention of July 6, 1854, with …

A Study Of The Government Of Parchment, Michigan, Shirley Forbes Swenson

Masters Theses

Introduction

Suburban-living has become a major part of our culture and the term has been widely accepted and interpreted to mean a distinctive way of life highly advantaged over life in strictly urban or rural settings. The first major move to the suburbs was by the wealthier segments of our society, and the gracious, leisurely pattern of living they sought still colors the popular image of the term "suburban."

An Analysis Of The Rapacki Plan To Denuclearize Central Europe, James R. Ozinga

Masters Theses

Introduction

In 1957, Adam Rapacki, Foreign Minister of Poland, proposed that a zone be created in Central Europe in which nuclear weapons of all kinds would be prohibited. The zone was to include the countries of West Germany, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. This paper seeks to study that proposal in the light of its background and consequences. The purpose of such a study, beyond the hopeful accretion of knowledge, is to form conclusions based on the analysis of the proposal as the beginning of a solution to the political and military impasse in Central Europe.

The proposal will be …

Construction And Validation Of Six Mental Health Sub-Scales By Age, Sex, And Educational Status, Thomas James Boynton

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Purpose of the Study

The topic considered in this thesis is the construction and validation of six mental health sub-scales which are based upon procedures controlling for age, sex, and educational status. Each item in a 22 item mental health scale is tested for validity by age, sex, and educational status. Six sub-scales, one for each dichotomy of the three social groups, are constructed from this procedure. The validity of these sub-scales is then tested via six different criteria of mental health. Finally, the validity of the six sub-scales, the original 22 item scale, and a related …
