Prevention Of Judicial Corruption In Bangladesh: Cutting The Gordian Knot By Ensuring Accountability, S M Solaiman Dec 2023

Prevention Of Judicial Corruption In Bangladesh: Cutting The Gordian Knot By Ensuring Accountability, S M Solaiman

University of Pennsylvania Asian Law Review

Judicial corruption has eaten away at good governance in Bangladesh for decades, hindering its ambition to attain the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) and taking advantage of the absence of any effective accountability mechanism. The magnitude of corruption is so intense that the successive Chief Justices, Attorneys-General, local, and international anti-corruption organizations, and even the Supreme Court of Bangladesh (“SCB”) itself in a judgment have forthrightly admitted the prevalence of judicial corruption. The malpractice does profoundly undermine the rule of law and infringe on the people’s right to fair trial. Corruption is on the rise in the country as …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Background Sexual violence (SV) is a significant, global public health problem, particularly among young adults. Promising interventions exist, including prosocial bystander intervention programs that train bystanders to intervene in situations at-risk for SV. However, these programs suffer from critical weaknesses: (1) they do not address the proximal effect of alcohol use on bystander decision-making and (2) they rely on self-report measures to evaluate outcomes. To overcome these limitations, we integrate new content specific to alcohol use within the context of prosocial bystander intervention into an existing, evidence-based program, RealConsent1.0. The resulting program, RealConsent2.0, aims to facilitate bystander behavior …

Bridging The Gap: Reducing Disparities In Reproductive Healthcare For Black And White Women, Emma Weiden

Population Health Research Brief Series

A woman’s reproductive healthcare experience in the United States can vary dramatically depending on her race. In 2020, the pregnancy-related mortality rate in the U.S. was 40.8 deaths per 100,000 live births for Black women, which is more than three times the rate among White women (12.7 per 100,000). This brief summarizes disparities in reproductive healthcare outcomes for Black women compared to White women in the U.S., advocates for policy changes, and provides recommendations for addressing racial disparities to create more equitable reproductive healthcare.

Public Relations Original Case Study: Shein Brand Trip Backlash, Isabel Hodell, Lauren Letts

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

This case examines Shein's controversial brand trip, which offers a complex narrative involving the intersection of public relations tactics, influencer marketing, and corporate ethics. Shein's reputation has been harmed by allegations of labor violations and unethical practices. In an attempt to improve their image, Shein created a brand trip for American fashion influencers to tour its Chinese factories. However, the influencers' glowing reviews sparked backlash as they failed to address Shein's history of exploitation and were claimed to be full of propaganda. This paper examines the aftermath of the brand trip, examining Shein's response as well as the backlash’s impact …

Kids For A Happy Marriage? A Preliminary Study On Marriage Satisfaction And Presence Or Absence Of Children Among Married Individuals In Indonesia, Alftisya Victory Hutabarat, Karel Karsten Himawan

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Having children after marriage tends to be seen as a normative practice in Indonesia. As a result, individuals who do not have children could be at risk of experiencing a set of social stigmas. The study aims to explore whether having children is associated with one’s marital satisfaction. In particular, the present study aims to explore the differences in marital satisfaction among married individuals who have biological children, who are childfree (voluntarily childless), and who are childless (involuntarily childless). A cross-sectional survey was conducted to 210 married individuals (M age = 34.3; SD = 7.9). The result shows that …

The Impact Of High Temperatures On Child Anthropometric Outcomes Worldwide, Natalia A. Cancino Garcia Dec 2023

The Impact Of High Temperatures On Child Anthropometric Outcomes Worldwide, Natalia A. Cancino Garcia

Master's Theses

High temperatures caused by climate change significantly impact society, including child nutrition. Our research focuses on the impact of high temperatures on the anthropometric outcomes of children aged 1 to 5 in 54 countries worldwide. We analyze the historical climate and anthropometric data to evaluate the effect of high temperature on weight-for-age (WAZ) and weight-for-height (WHZ) in children. Results indicate that high temperatures negatively affect child nutrition, particularly in areas above 20°C, and children in rural areas are more vulnerable. The impact of monthly temperature on child anthropometric outcomes varies across countries, regions, and cultural practices. Economic status alone is …

A robot is loosely defined as a device designed to perform agentic tasks autonomously or under remote control, often replicating or assisting human actions. Robots can vary widely in form, ranging from simple assembly line machines performing repetitive actions to advanced systems with no moving parts but with artificial intelligence (AI) capable of learning, problem-solving, communicating, and adapting to diverse environments and human interactions. Applications of experimental human-robot interaction research include the design, development, and implementation of …

Dementia Diagnosis And Personality Change, Molly Pavek

Counselor Education Capstones

The diagnosis of dementia is typically overlooked when thinking about mental health. It has been around for over a century, yet there have been minimal breakthroughs in research. This diagnosis is quite complicated, given the unexpected and sometimes abrupt nature of symptoms. There is still no cure and there are no medications that stop, slow down, or reverse the diagnosis. Several cognitive and behavioral symptoms accompany a dementia diagnosis; a change in personality being one of the most apparent. Researching personality changes over time, allows researchers discover patterns among the diagnosed and medical professionals, the diagnosed, and caregivers of the …

The Aesthetics Of Social Innovation: The Body As The Site Of Change, Amy Phillips Dec 2023

The Aesthetics Of Social Innovation: The Body As The Site Of Change, Amy Phillips

Culminating Experience Projects

Social innovation scholarship often prioritizes tangible, product-based answers to questions of societal justice without examining the catalyst for change. Exploring the potential of the body to serve as a site of social innovation may complement the goals of emerging paradigms of social innovation that embrace new forms of knowing. The sensory knowledge developed through methods such as Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed is systematized in the multidisciplinary field of somaesthetics, which looks closely at the disciplined cultivation of the body. This research project tracked the perceived body awareness and self-growth of formerly incarcerated individuals following four applied theatre workshops. …

Relational Empowerment Among Public Safety Outreach Workers And Violence Interventionists In U.S. Cities: A Qualitative Inquiry, Christopher M. Thompson

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The nation-wide uprisings for racial justice in the Summer of 2020 brought into mainstream awareness the calls to shift resources away from police departments and channel funds to mental health, education, and other social services. However, in the wake of recent post-pandemic surges in community violence, police budgets increased, while public opinion for grassroots, radical initiatives like “defund the police” that many activists, organizers, and abolitionists pushed into public consciousness has faltered. Studies have shown that the implementation of community-led public safety programs significantly reduce incidents of street violence in U.S. cities. Thus, research that informs community-driven violence intervention and …
