Taking A Closer Look: The Why And How Of New Accounting Practices In An Australian Religious/Charitable Organisation, H. J. Irvine Jul 2003

Taking A Closer Look: The Why And How Of New Accounting Practices In An Australian Religious/Charitable Organisation, H. J. Irvine

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Neo-institutional sociology proposes that organisations in a particular field behave in essentially the same way. In taking for granted the prevalence of institutionalised activities, such as accounting, however, it offers little in the way of penetrating insights into how, and to what extent, those activities are actually introduced and embedded into individual organisations. Changes in the nonprofit environment in Australia in recent years have catapulted organisations in that sector into a new corporate mode of operation, providing a unique opportunity not only to observe the introduction of new accounting practices, but also to critique the usefulness of neo-institutionalism as a …

Countershock: Mobilizing Resistance To Electroshock Weapons, Brian Martin, S. Wright Jul 2003

Countershock: Mobilizing Resistance To Electroshock Weapons, Brian Martin, S. Wright

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Electroshock, stun and restraint technologies are often used for torture and as tools of repression. There is much information available exposing the problems with such technologies but little about how to be effective in challenging their use. The concept of political jiu-jitsu - the process by which an attack on a nonviolent resister can backfire on the attackers - is introduced and adapted to examine challenges to electroshock weapons. In order to make these weapons backfire, it is important to emphasise the value of potential targets, to expose secret dealings, to reveal the harm caused by the weapons and to …

A Shock To The System? The Impact Of Hrm On Academic Ir In Australia In Comparison With Usa And Uk, 1980-95 , Diana J. Kelly Jul 2003

A Shock To The System? The Impact Of Hrm On Academic Ir In Australia In Comparison With Usa And Uk, 1980-95 , Diana J. Kelly

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Taking a theme of the transmission of ideas within disciplines, this paper investigates the impact of academic human resource management on academic industrial relations, comparing the impact in Australia between 1990 and 1995 with the earlier responses in UK and USA. It is shown that while HRM had a significant effect on academic industrial relations, the extent of that impact is not wholly clear because other events, such as public policy shifts and the changing role of universities also affected academic industrial relations.

When Does Gender Trump Money? Bargaining And Time In Household Work, M. Bittman, P. England, L. Sayer, N. Folbre, George Matheson Jul 2003

When Does Gender Trump Money? Bargaining And Time In Household Work, M. Bittman, P. England, L. Sayer, N. Folbre, George Matheson

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Using data from Australia and the United States, the authors explore the effect of spouses' contribution to family income on how housework is divided. Consistent with exchange-bargaining theory, women decrease their housework as their earnings increase, up to the point where both spouses contribute equally to the income. In other respects, gender trumps money.

Transborder Industrialization And Singapore's 'Clones' In Indonesia, China And Vietnam: A Strategy Reconsidered, Caroline Yeoh, Chee Sin Koh, Julian Ching Wei Wee Jul 2003

Transborder Industrialization And Singapore's 'Clones' In Indonesia, China And Vietnam: A Strategy Reconsidered, Caroline Yeoh, Chee Sin Koh, Julian Ching Wei Wee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The idea of exporting Singapore’s expertise in infrastructure development took hold, in the early 1990s, as part of a larger regionalization strategy. Singapore’s positive reputation with multinational corporations for the efficiency of its industrial infrastructure and its stable, corrupt-free investment environment underscored this strategy. Led by Singapore’s government-linked companies, industrial parks were established in several Asian countries. Their progress is a test of Singapore’s ability to export its efficiency in industrial park development and management outside its borders. This paper finds that the initial optimism with which the flagship projects were unveiled has not been justified.

Transformation Approaches For The Construction Of Weibull Prediction Interval, Zhenlin Yang, Stanley P. See, Min Xie Jul 2003

Transformation Approaches For The Construction Of Weibull Prediction Interval, Zhenlin Yang, Stanley P. See, Min Xie

Research Collection School Of Economics

Two methods of transforming the Weibull data to near normality, namely the Box-Cox method and Kullback-Leibler (KL) information method, are discussed and contrasted. A simple prediction interval (PI) based on the better KL information method is proposed. The asymptotic property of this interval is established. Its small sample behavior is investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. Simulation results show that this simple interval is close to the existing complicated PI where the percentage points of the reference distribution have to be either simulated or approximated.

What Has Luck Got To Do With Economic Development? An Interpretation Of Resurgent Asia's Growth Experience, Hing-Man Leung, Swee Liang Tan, Zhenlin Yang Jul 2003

What Has Luck Got To Do With Economic Development? An Interpretation Of Resurgent Asia's Growth Experience, Hing-Man Leung, Swee Liang Tan, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper critically reexamines the belief, currently gathering strength in the literature, that economic development depends on good luck rather than on good policy, and that Prometheus is “unchained by chance”. While it is impossible to disprove the role of luck in growth, we argue that luck is endogenous, and good luck is a function of good policy. Luck favours those who strive. Again contrary to common belief, we show that resurgent Asian economies have endured more, not less, than their fair share of economic volatility. They learned their lessons by success and failures, and luck is endogenous through learning-by-investing.

A New Coincident Index Of Business Cycles Based On Monthly And Quarterly Series, Roberto S. Mariano, Yasutomo Murasawa Jul 2003

A New Coincident Index Of Business Cycles Based On Monthly And Quarterly Series, Roberto S. Mariano, Yasutomo Murasawa

Research Collection School Of Economics

Popular monthly coincident indices of business cycles, e.g. the composite index and the Stock-Watson coincident index, have two shortcomings. First, they ignore information contained in quarterly indicators such as real GDP. Second, they lack economic interpretation; hence the heights of peaks and the depths of troughs depend on the choice of an index. This paper extends the Stock-Watson coincident index by applying maximum likelihood factor analysis to a mixed-frequency series of quarterly real GDP and monthly coincident business cycle indicators. The resulting index is related to latent monthly real GDP. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

The Effect Of An Unconscious Auditory Stimulus On Pilot Performance Under Varying Instrument Flying Conditions, Christina Eleni Christakou Jul 2003

The Effect Of An Unconscious Auditory Stimulus On Pilot Performance Under Varying Instrument Flying Conditions, Christina Eleni Christakou

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Human error remains a significant contributing factor with respect to accidents in civil air transportation. It is therefore crucial to establish avenues by which performance on the flightdeck can be enhanced under conditions of distress. The purpose of this study was to examine whether an unconscious auditory stimulus (UAS) could enhance pilot performance under varying instrument flight (IFR) conditions on the aircraft flightdeck. Forty IFR student pilots underwent two eight-minute simulated flights, whereupon they were presented with different IFR weather conditions. During the trial, the experimental group listened to a UAS, whereas the control group listened to white noise (WN). …

Spread, Depth, And Order Flow Patterns Of Warrants And Their Underlying Stocks On The Stock Exchange Of Thailand, Charlie Charoenwong, Nuttawat Visaltanachoti, David K. Ding Jul 2003

Spread, Depth, And Order Flow Patterns Of Warrants And Their Underlying Stocks On The Stock Exchange Of Thailand, Charlie Charoenwong, Nuttawat Visaltanachoti, David K. Ding

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study compared the trading characteristics of warrants and their underlying stocks. The Stock Exchange of Thailand provided a good platform for comparing the trading characteristics of warrants and their underlying stocks because both these securities are traded in the same market venue and have identical trading rules. Hence, the impact of trading protocol on intraday variation and an informed trader's decision to buy warrants or stocks was controlled. The paper found that they have a similar downward sloping pattern of spreads, adverse selection component, and liquidity immediacy, U-shaped for volatility and trading volume, and upward-sloping for depth and market …

Report Of Animal Bones From Selhagi, Mývatn District, Northern Iceland, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris Jul 2003

Report Of Animal Bones From Selhagi, Mývatn District, Northern Iceland, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

In 2001 the FSl / NABO project Landscapes of Settlement in Northern Iceland collected animal bones from a stratified midden deposit associated with the abandoned site Selhagi on the property of the modern farm Haganes. Selhagi is located in the lushly vegetated lakeshore zone and its environmental setting presents a strong contrast with the eroded uplands to the S of the lake where the early sites at Sveigakot and Hrísheimur are under excavation. Close to both major migratory waterfowl nesting areas and some of the best trout fishing in Iceland, the site would appear to be optimally located for exploitation …

An Operational Measure Of Physician Lifelong Learning: Its Development, Components And Preliminary Psychometric Data, Mohammadreza Hojat, Thomas J. Nasca, James B. Erdmann, Anthony J. Frisby, Jon J. Veloski, Joseph S. Gonnella

Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

Despite the emphasis placed on physicians’ lifelong learning, no psychometrically sound instrument has been developed to provide an operational measure of the concept and its components among physicians. The authors designed this study to develop a tool for measuring physician lifelong learning, to identify its underlying components and to assess its psychometric properties. A 37-item questionnaire was developed, based on a review of literature and the results of two pilot studies. Psychometric analyses of the responses of 160 physicians identified 19 items that were included in the Jefferson Scale of Physician Lifelong Learning. Factor analysis of the 19 items showed …
