Simplifying Three-Way Questionnaires - Do The Advantages Of Binary Answer Categories Compensate For The Loss Of Information?, Sara Dolnicar Jan 2003

Simplifying Three-Way Questionnaires - Do The Advantages Of Binary Answer Categories Compensate For The Loss Of Information?, Sara Dolnicar

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Rating scales have become a very common questionnaire answer format in marketing surveys. Apart from problems related to data analysis using ordinal data of this kind, questionnaires producing three-way data are extremely tedious for respondents to answer. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between binary and ordinally scaled three-way data questionnaires with regard to the duration, the perceived complexity by respondents and the results with regard to the attitude profiles derived. Results indicate that the findings from ordinally scaled questionnaires do not differ sufficiently in terms of profile interpretation to justify the use of such scales …

Political Economy Of Accounting In Intellectual Capital Reporting, Indra Abeysekera Jan 2003

Political Economy Of Accounting In Intellectual Capital Reporting, Indra Abeysekera

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Several factors shaping intellectual capital reporting (ICR) in the context of the political economy of accounting (PEA) theory were discussed in relation to traditional accounting reporting system, intellectual capital and intellectual reporting definitions, techniques employed to report intellectual capital (IC), and theoretical classification of IC. Reporting intellectual capital enables firms to report them in a fashion that best suits the relationship between the firm and their political, economic, and social arrangement. The unregulated reporting can increase manipulation of ICR in a borderless reporting environment to reduce the tension between the firm and its political, social, and economic arrangement.

Textbooks To The Shelf -- Making The Connection Faster, Deana Groves, Nelda Sims, Ellen Micheletti

Deana Groves

The Educational Resources Center (ERC) at Western Kentucky University was searching for ways to shorten the processing time for its collection of textbooks for grades K-12. These textbooks are replaced on a regular rotation with new editions as they are published. The collaborative effort between ERC and the Bibliographic Access Unit streamlined the processing and greatly decreased the time between acquisition and availability to library patrons.

Measuring Anger In A Prison Population Using The Anger Disorders Scale And The Personality Assessment Inventory, Michael R. Wydo Jan 2003

Measuring Anger In A Prison Population Using The Anger Disorders Scale And The Personality Assessment Inventory, Michael R. Wydo

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

In comparison with other emotions, such as anxiety and depression, the research literature on anger-related problems is lacking. Anger, and anger-related behaviors pose a critical problem to clinicians and researchers. The inability to identify and treat individuals with a propensity toward aggressive behavior is related to the insufficient empirical evidence defining anger as a diagnosable disorder. An ongoing argument has existed as to the causes and related concepts of anger and aggression. The present study validates a new assessment measure for anger and explores the correlation between prisoners' offense records and specific type of anger expression. The Anger Disorder Scale …

A Comparison Study Of Children's Cognitive Understanding Of Conception And Birth: England, Sweden And The United States, Carie Jo Ahigrim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the extent to which early childhood understanding of conception and birth is increased by early sexuality education. The present study compares conception and birth understanding of primary-aged children in America with children in other countries. Specifically, this study compared prompted drawings done by 6 year-old children from England, Sweden, The Netherlands, and the United States. Prompts used to elicit these drawing were: "Where do babies come from?" and "How are babies made?" Controlled comparison data of the children's knowledge of conception and birth, were obtained through the application of the "Children's Sexuality Awareness Scale" (Koch 1974) and …

Beyond Balancing The Interests Of Creditors And Developing States, Anna Gelpern Jan 2003

Beyond Balancing The Interests Of Creditors And Developing States, Anna Gelpern

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The traditional view of sovereign debt as a relationship between a developing country government and and its foreign private creditors is increasingly out of date. Financial institutions and individuals inside the borrowing countries are are becoming more and more important as creditors to their governments. At the same time, as countries remove restrictions on cross-border capital flows, foreign creditors are participating more actively in domestic law, local-currency debt markets. These developments imply fundamental changes in lending decisions and, where the loan goes bad, in the sovereign debt workout process.

Iroquoian Chert Acquisition: Changing Patterns In The Late Woodland Of Southwestern Ontario, James R. Keron Jan 2003

Iroquoian Chert Acquisition: Changing Patterns In The Late Woodland Of Southwestern Ontario, James R. Keron

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the organization of Iroquoian chert acquisition technology by comparing a number of sites in the southwestern Ontario. The relative amount of cherts from various sources is examined through time and space and across various types of sites looking for patterns both between sites and within sites. During Glen Meyer times a direct embedded acquisition pattern of Kettle Point chert is evident. Groups from the east of the study area could pass freely through intervening groups to acquire chert with distance being the only factor determining the quantity used. A transition to a down-the-line exchange pattern controlled by …

Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang Jan 2003

Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This article recounts how a number of strategic infrastructure investment decisions in airport and rail development taken by the Singapore government were at variance with recommendations emerging from cost-benefit analysis, but were considered necessary to support external competitiveness. This link between infrastructure provision and economic development may require decision makers to assess the trade-off between prudent macro-economic planning and efficient micro-economic management for major projects. In the case of airport hubs, the most difficult assessment might be the game consideration of how much, and how far ahead, excess capacity is needed to ensure the dominance of the hub.

Effects Of Electronic Trading On The Hang Seng Index Futures Market, Joseph Fung, Donald Lien, Yiuman Tse, Yiu Kuen Tse Jan 2003

Effects Of Electronic Trading On The Hang Seng Index Futures Market, Joseph Fung, Donald Lien, Yiuman Tse, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper investigates the effects of the migration of the Hang Seng Index futures from open-outcry trading to electronic trading. Using trade data over a window of six months we find evidence that, after the migration, the bid-ask spread of the futures contract decreases and the contribution of the futures price in information transmission increases. Furthermore, the asymmetry in volatility spillover reduces and the open interests of the futures market become smaller. These results suggest that the anonymity in trading and the higher speed of order execution in the electronic trading system attract informed traders to the futures market and …

Land-Cover Change Monitoring With Classification Trees Using Landsat Tm And Ancillary Data, John Rogan, Jennifer Miller, Doug Stow, Janet Franklin, Lisa Levien, Chris Fischer Jan 2003

Land-Cover Change Monitoring With Classification Trees Using Landsat Tm And Ancillary Data, John Rogan, Jennifer Miller, Doug Stow, Janet Franklin, Lisa Levien, Chris Fischer

Geography

We monitored land-cover change in San Diego County (1990-1996) using multitemporal Landsat TM data. Change vectors of Kauth Thomas features were combined with stable multitemporal Kauth Thomas features and a suite of ancillary variables within a classification tree classifier. A combination of aerial photointerpretation and field measurements yielded training and validation data. Maps of land-cover change were generated for three hierarchical levels of change classification of increasing detail: change vs. no-change; four classes representing broad increase and decrease classes; and nine classes distinguishing increases or decreases in tree canopy cover, shrub cover, and urban change. The multitemporal Kauth Thomas (both …

Measuring The Physical Composition Of Urban Morphology Using Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Models, Tarek Rashed, John R. Weeks, Dar Roberts, John Rogan, Rebecca Powell Jan 2003

Measuring The Physical Composition Of Urban Morphology Using Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Models, Tarek Rashed, John R. Weeks, Dar Roberts, John Rogan, Rebecca Powell

Geography

The application of multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) to map the physical composition of urban morphology using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data is evaluated and tested. MESMA models mixed pixels as linear combinations of pure spectra, called endmembers, while allowing the types and number of endmembers to vary on a per-pixel basis. A total of 63 two-, three-, and four-endmember models were applied to a Landsat TM image for Los Angeles County, and a smaller subset of these models was chosen based on fraction and root-mean-squared error (RMSE) criteria. From this subset, an optimal model was selected for each …

A Model For Runaway Outreach, Constance Lewis Cromartie

Educational Specialist, 2000-2009

Various types of runaway outreach methods and practices were investigated. A proposed model of runaway outreach was suggested based on the results of other documented and practiced methods of outreach. The sources used were from published literature, and a training manual devised by a runaway serviees program. The suggested model is congruent with other successful teen runaway outreach programs and it supports the position that adolescents and their families must be reached and supported before, during and after a runaway episode.

Superior Haptic Perceptual Selectivity In Late-Blind And Very-Low-Vision Subjects, Morton Heller, Deneen Brackett Jan 2003

Superior Haptic Perceptual Selectivity In Late-Blind And Very-Low-Vision Subjects, Morton Heller, Deneen Brackett

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Blindfolded sighted, congenitally blind, late-blind, and very-low-vision subjects were tested on a tangible version of the embedded-figures test. The results of ANOVAs on accuracy measures yielded superior performance by the very-low-vision and late-blind subjects compared with the blindfolded sighted and congenitally blind participants. Accuracy of the congenitally blind subjects was similar to that of the blindfolded sighted participants. However, all groups of blind subjects were significantly faster than the blindfolded sighted subjects. It is suggested that experience with pictures combined with haptic skill aid perceptual selectivity in touch.
