Growth And Regional Integration: The Case Of The Southern African Development Community, Chris Mupimpila, Patricia Funjika Nov 2010

Growth And Regional Integration: The Case Of The Southern African Development Community, Chris Mupimpila, Patricia Funjika

Zambia Social Science Journal

The neoclassical growth model is augmented with structural variables to analyse the determinants of economic growth in the Southern African Development Community. The results show that physical capital, exports, infrastructure, and human capital have a positive and significant effect on economic growth. However, inflation and external debt service have a negative but significant impact on economic growth in the region. In addition, the results suggest that the underdevelopment of the financial sector is a source of heterogeneity among member countries. Therefore, to promote growth and deeper integration in the region, it is necessary to address the underlying causes of inflation, …

Procurement Of Information Technology And Canadian Municipalities, Umera Ali Nov 2010

Procurement Of Information Technology And Canadian Municipalities, Umera Ali

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines the trends for the attainment of information technology (IT) and the barriers to the successful procurement of IT. A literature review, survey of IT managers in Ontario municipalities, and three interviews with municipal IT professionals were conducted. The findings reveal that Ontario municipalities are satisfied with their IT projects for using detailed plans, engaging in formal strategic planning, introducing mechanism controls to avoid risks, and using letters of agreement with formally established terms and conditions for projects, all of which are steps towards a successful procurement process. Nevertheless, there are still some barriers for small local governments …

Shipping The Runners To The Race: A Sport Tourism Interpretation Of The Alchian-Allen Theorem, Steven Cobb, Douglas J. Olberding Nov 2010

Shipping The Runners To The Race: A Sport Tourism Interpretation Of The Alchian-Allen Theorem, Steven Cobb, Douglas J. Olberding

Faculty Scholarship

This paper provides empirical support for the Alchian and Allen "shipping the good apples out" hypothesis. The hypothesis version tested here involves estimating the effect of travel cost on the quality of a weekend trip to Cincinnati, where travel cost is measured by time spent in travel and visit quality is measured by the amount of discretionary spending associated with the trip. Using linear regression analysis on data from race participants in the 2008 Flying Pig marathon and half marathon races, strong and robust evidence is found to support the validity of this hypothesis. Specifically, travel distance does …

Time Diary Versus Instantaneous Sampling: A Comparison Of Two Behavioral Research Methods, Michael Paolisso, Raymond B. Hames Nov 2010

Time Diary Versus Instantaneous Sampling: A Comparison Of Two Behavioral Research Methods, Michael Paolisso, Raymond B. Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The accurate collection of unbiased behavioral data is an important component of theory building and ethnographic research. In this article, the authors review two approaches for the collection of behavioral data: time diary and instantaneous sampling. Time diary requires individuals to recall their behavior at specific time intervals; instantaneous sampling relies on researchers observing and recording the behavior of individuals. Each approach has specific strengths and weaknesses. The authors review recent methodological literature on both approaches, identify particular problems with both approaches, and contrast their respective methodological strengths and weaknesses.

Surveying Citizens: A Handbook For Municipal Officials Who Want To Know What Their Citizens Think, David H. Folz Phd Nov 2010

Surveying Citizens: A Handbook For Municipal Officials Who Want To Know What Their Citizens Think, David H. Folz Phd

MTAS Publications: Full Publications

This handbook describes the process getting valid and reliable information from a citizen survey. It's intended for readers who don't have a substantial background in survey research or statistics. The basic premise is simple: Do it right or don't bother to do it at all. The necessary steps to "do it right" allow for few shortcuts in planning, designing and implementing a high-quality citizen survey or in analyzing responses. Following the procedures and suggestions described here should yield questions that are valid (measures what you want to measure), reliable (consistent), and useful (results that relate to the survey objectives.

The Value Of Using Interns In The Academic Library, Antje Mays Nov 2010

The Value Of Using Interns In The Academic Library, Antje Mays

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

Graduate programs in library and information science programs provide strong theoretical foundations in information systems, library organization, library history, management, collection management to support user needs, reference, information literacy instruction, and specialized information resources. While practical course projects create approximations of professional librarianship, the best hands-on learning experiences include work-based learning through internship placements in actual libraries. Internships immerse students in valuable hands-on practical work in real-workd settings. Internships also learn from the interns' perspectives on library processes and challenges, while also providing library professionals with enriching opportunities to mentor library students and convey knowledge to future generations of professionals.

Contrary to divisive labels to describe generations, members of different age groups have much to teach each other: Younger workers bring fresh perspectives to old issues, while older workers' valuable organizational history help inform current contexts. All age groups in the workplace benefit in learning from each other's perspectives.

A Protection Post-Mortem On The "Death" Of Multiculturalism In Germany, Erin Mooney

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Noticeably absent from the recent pronouncements of the “death” of multiculturalism in Germany, including Chancellor Angela Merkel’s own conclusion that the policy had “utterly failed,” has been any interest to seriously examine, let alone address, the reasons for such a failure.

Multiculturalism And The Struggle Of National Normative Challenges, Marc Alexander C. Gionet Nov 2010

Multiculturalism And The Struggle Of National Normative Challenges, Marc Alexander C. Gionet

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Globalization has not translated into a set of universal monolithic values. As populations relocate for various reasons, increasingly less effort is required not only to stay connected, but to remain within the home community via satellite television, radio, telecommunications, and locally concentrated diaspora. Henryk M. Broder has described such a phenomenon as the development of “ parallel societies, ” which result from immigrants’ failure or lack of interest in integrating into a host community. The question that many commentators have attempted to answer is: does the development of parallel societies, or even additional cultural diversity, represent a threat or a …

European Identity Struggles In The Age Of Austerity, Par Engstrom Nov 2010

European Identity Struggles In The Age Of Austerity, Par Engstrom

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The economic crisis has coincided with a discernible rise of right-wing populist parties in a number of European countries. This was most recently seen in elections in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Right-wing populist parties also hold parliamentary seats in Austria, Denmark, Finland, and Norway, and they have been part of coalition governments in Italy and Switzerland for some time. In France, Jean-Marie Le Pen’s National Front, although not represented in parliament, wields considerable political influence, and may receive an additional electoral boost should Le Pen’s daughter, Marine Le Pen, inherit the party leadership. True, these parties still enjoy only …

Who Is More Humane? An Ethnographic Account Of Power Struggles In Jewish-Palestinian Dialogue Encounters, Nava Sonnenschein, Zvi Bekerman Nov 2010

Who Is More Humane? An Ethnographic Account Of Power Struggles In Jewish-Palestinian Dialogue Encounters, Nava Sonnenschein, Zvi Bekerman

Peace and Conflict Studies

This study addresses the question of majority-minority relations in situations of intractable conflict (Bar-Tal 2000). The study focuses on processes involved in the majority Jewish group’s construction of images of the Palestinian minority group, all citizens of Israel, while participating in a structured dialogue encounter conducted at Tel Aviv University in Israel. In this dialogue, it was observed that negative inhumane images that the Jews have of the Palestinians were notably expressed by the Jewish group in three situations: to cope with distress when their morality was challenged by the Palestinian group; to preserve the Jewish group's superiority and hegemony …

The “Public” In “Public Peace Process” And In “Mini-Publics:” A Dialogue Between Democratic Theory And Peace Studies, Amit Ron Nov 2010

The “Public” In “Public Peace Process” And In “Mini-Publics:” A Dialogue Between Democratic Theory And Peace Studies, Amit Ron

Peace and Conflict Studies

The recent attention of peace studies scholars to the role of the "public" parallels an increased interest of democratic theorists in the legitimacy of "mini-publics:" initiatives that bring small groups of citizens together to discuss policy issues. In fact, democratic activists and peace activists who seek to engage the public face similar theoretical and practical challenges. The purpose of this article is to contribute to an emerging dialogue between the disciplines of democratic theory and peace studies. Such a dialogue can be beneficial in at least two ways: it allows an exploration of the role of legitimacy in public peace …

Letters Of Intent, Costly Signals, And Local Peacemaking In The Georgian-Abkhaz Conflict, Spencer B. Meredith Iii Nov 2010

Letters Of Intent, Costly Signals, And Local Peacemaking In The Georgian-Abkhaz Conflict, Spencer B. Meredith Iii

Peace and Conflict Studies

A state of near-war lasted for almost two decades between Georgia and the separatist region of Abkhazia. Localized violence plagued neighboring communities while United Nations agencies, humanitarian groups, and religious organizations worked with both sides to resolve the conflict’s underlying causes. Unfortunately, those diverse and long-standing efforts proved fruitless when the parties went to war in August 2008. This article examines the reasons for the conflict’s enduring nature and presents an example of grassroots peacemaking completed by university students focused on the plight of Georgia’s domestic refugees. An in-depth case study reveals the impact of their unilateral peacemaking efforts to …

Perfect Little Feminists? Young Girls In The Us Interpret Gender, Violence, And Friendship In Cartoons, Spring-Serenity Duvall

Faculty Publications

Girls’ studies has emerged as a dynamic area of scholarship that examines the cultural construction of girlhood, the role that girls play in society, their identity formation, and their representation in media. This paper extends previous research by interviewing young girls about their interactions with each other as they view and interpret animated cartoons. Expanding claims that Girl Power programs such as The Powerpuff Girls empower viewers, I also discuss the role of third wave, commodity, and post feminism in influencing girls’ expectations of gender equality even as they embrace gender role differences. In discussing the importance of researchers engaging …

The Not-So-Quiet Revolution: Cautionary Comments On The Rejection Of Hypothesis Testing In Favor Of A “Causal” Modeling Alternative, Daniel H. Robinson, Joel R. Levin

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Rodgers (2010) recently applauded a revolution involving the increased use of statistical modeling techniques. It is argued that such use may have a downside, citing empirical evidence in educational psychology that modeling techniques are often applied in cross-sectional, correlational studies to produce unjustified causal conclusions and prescriptive statements.
