Book Review Of Beau Breslin, "From Words To Worlds: Exploring Constitutional Functionality", Robert Tsai Dec 2009

Book Review Of Beau Breslin, "From Words To Worlds: Exploring Constitutional Functionality", Robert Tsai

Robert L Tsai

This is a review of Beau Breslin's book, "From Words to Worlds: Exploring Constitutional Functionality" (Johns Hopkins, 2009). As an antidote to what he believes to be scholarly marginalization of the "unique" aspects of a written constitution, Breslin focuses attention on seven functions of such a legal text: transforming existing orders, conveying collective aspirations, designing institutions, mediating conflict, recognizing claims of subnational communities, empowering social actors, and constraining governmental authority. This review briefly critiques Breslin's functional approach and discusses two of the more pressing goals of modern constitutionalism: managing social conflict and preserving cultural heritage.

Exploring Parental Aggression Toward Teachers In A Public School Setting, David May, Yanfen Chen, Jerry Johnson, Lisa Hutchinson, Melissa Ricketts Dec 2009

Exploring Parental Aggression Toward Teachers In A Public School Setting, David May, Yanfen Chen, Jerry Johnson, Lisa Hutchinson, Melissa Ricketts

David May

Almost all of the extant research examining aggressive activity uses data from student populations. In this study, we extend that literature by examining teacher perceptions of parental aggression in public schools in Kentucky. Using data from a sample of 5,971 public school teachers, we determine that parental aggression directed at public school teachers is a rare event, and when it occurs, it is far more likely to be verbal than physical in nature. The multivariate results presented here further indicate that younger teachers, teachers with advanced degrees, and teachers from more heavily populated areas as more likely to have experienced …

The Context Matters: Maritime Safety In The Vessel Traffic Service (Vts) Domain, Gesa Praetorius, Margareta Lützhöft, Karl Bruno

Gesa Praetorius

Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is a service to the maritime community implemented to promote and improve maritime safety. In recent years VTS has become a topic of increased interest for maritime stakeholders and the general public. To derive insights on how maritime safety is constructed in the VTS domain this exploratory study was conducted. Four VTS centres were visited and 15 VTS operators were interviewed and observed at work. Further a focus group interview with 8 VTS operators with focus on decision support tools in the VTS domain was conducted. The results of the study indicate that VTS operators define …

Parents, Parenting And Toddler Adaptation: Evidence From A National Longitudinal Study Of Australian Children, Melanie Zimmer-Gembeck, Rae Thomas Dec 2009

Parents, Parenting And Toddler Adaptation: Evidence From A National Longitudinal Study Of Australian Children, Melanie Zimmer-Gembeck, Rae Thomas

Rae Thomas

Because infants and toddlers are particularly susceptible to parents’ socialization efforts, the purpose of this 2-year longitudinal study (N= 4271 infants) was to forecast toddlers’ competence and problems (adaptational outcomes, ageM= 30 months) from parenting experiences when they were infants (age M= 9 months). Using structural equation modeling and data from a nationally representative sample, parenting during infancy was important to toddlers’ adaptational outcomes, with parenting warmth most strongly connected to toddler competence and parenting hostility most strongly connected to toddler problems. Additionally, toddlers’ outcomes were associated with their parents’ mental health symptoms, life difficulty, coping and self-efficacy when measured …

On The Intergenerational Persistence Of Work Hours, Manuel Toledo Dec 2009

On The Intergenerational Persistence Of Work Hours, Manuel Toledo

Manuel E Toledo

This paper studies the intergenerational persistence of work hours. In particular, I look at the correlation of hours between fathers and sons in the U.S. Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, I find a strong persistence in the permanent component of hours worked. I investigate the extent this correlation is explained by (i) persistence in wages, (ii) correlation in leisure preferences, and (iii) intergenerational wealth transfers. I also examine the role of work effort on the transmission of earnings across generations. To this end I provide a quantitative model of intergenerational transmission of human capital and wealth.

The Case For The Development Of Public Transit In An Urban Boundary Rural Area, Sarmistha Majumdar Dec 2009

The Case For The Development Of Public Transit In An Urban Boundary Rural Area, Sarmistha Majumdar

Sarmistha R Majumdar

Individuals’ preferences for automobiles are often taken for granted in our auto centric society. This study attempts to determine if commuters in a city located beyond the fringe of a metropolitan area are willing to use public transit if it is developed and what are the socioeconomic and attitudinal factors that influence individuals’ decision to use such a service. Analyses of survey data reveal that preferences exist for public transit service, which can be partly attributed to individuals’ concerns regarding rising gasoline prices and air pollution, and is particularly noticeable among those who are educated and/or belong to a younger …

Bees In America: How The Honey Bee Shaped A Nation, Tammy Horn Dec 2009

Bees In America: How The Honey Bee Shaped A Nation, Tammy Horn

Tammy Horn

" Honey bees--and the qualities associated with them--have quietly influenced American values for four centuries. During every major period in the country's history, bees and beekeepers have represented order and stability in a country without a national religion, political party, or language. Bees in America is an enlightening cultural history of bees and beekeeping in the United States. Tammy Horn, herself a beekeeper, offers a varied social and technological history from the colonial period, when the British first introduced bees to the New World, to the present, when bees are being used by the American military to detect bombs. Early …

Market Power, Eu Integration And Privatization: The Case Of Romania, Gabriel Asaftei, Christopher Parmeter

Christopher F. Parmeter

This paper investigates the effects on pricing behavior of firms in a transition economy resulting from integration into the European Union’s Common Market and changes in ownership. We use a semiparametric model with a rich panel of manufacturing firms in Romania from 1995 to 2003 to estimate firm-level markups. We find that markups are higher in more concentrated industries and less exposed to foreign competition. Trade integration appears to generally increase competitive pressure on markups. Industries exposed to more international competition experience a larger change in markups following integration into the European Union’s Common Market. However, as the initial impact …
