No More Design By Committee: Strategies For Building Lean Mean Web Project Teams, Jennifer A. Keach, Jody C. Fagan Dec 2010

No More Design By Committee: Strategies For Building Lean Mean Web Project Teams, Jennifer A. Keach, Jody C. Fagan

Jody C Fagan

Whether you are implementing a virtual reference service or redesigning the library website, today’s web projects require organizational buy-in and web skill. Even when working well, standing committees don’t always have the skills needed to create a successful website, clear authority, and resources to complete the job. This program and paper presents research study findings about web committees and teams, and proposes an alternate strategy for developing project-focused, skill-driven teams to manage your library’s next web project.

West Michigan Wind Assessment Issue Brief #4 The brief summarizes a public engagement program on the perceived benefits and challenges of potential offshore wind energy development in Lake Michigan. The Delphi Inquiry approach was used to find an informed group consensus on several topics. Offshore wind energy may be more acceptable if property values, tourism, and scenic vista are not significantly impacted, it reduces fossil fuel use and pollution, and if coastal communities benefit.

Turquía Y Las Revoluciones Árabes, Mehmet Ozkan

Mehmet OZKAN

Turkey’S ‘New’ Engagements In Africa And Asia: Scope, Content And Implications, Mehmet Ozkan Dec 2010

Turkey’S ‘New’ Engagements In Africa And Asia: Scope, Content And Implications, Mehmet Ozkan

Mehmet OZKAN

Since the AK Party assumed power in 2002, Turkish foreign policy has gone through a tremendous change both in its content and scope. The most striking and ‘new’ aspect of Turkey’s foreign policy has been toward Africa and Asia. This article examines and offers a holistic view of these developments. African opening represents a perfect convergence of civil society and state cooperation and bear fruit in political, economic and social terms in a very short time. However, the most important implication is that it aims to conceptualize a ‘new’ Africa in Turkey by overcoming the image of two separate Africa: …

“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating….” Kofi Annan

Guided by this notion and the sociological frameworks of “critical theory” and “social justice,” we addressed specific situations in which access to, control of, and use of information is unequal, impeded, manipulated, and/or abused and thus can result in people’s disempowerment. We also explored efforts aimed at empowering those within these situations.

Johanna K.P. Greeson, PhD, MSS, MLSP

Many children in the child welfare system (CWS) have histories of recurrent interpersonal trauma perpetrated by caregivers early in life often referred to as complex trauma. Children in the CWS also experience a diverse range of reactions across multiple areas of functioning that are associated with such exposure. Nevertheless, few CWSs routinely screen for trauma exposure and associated symptoms beyond an initial assessment of the precipitating event. This study examines trauma histories, including complex trauma exposure (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, domestic violence), posttraumatic stress, and behavioral and emotional problems of 2,251 youth (age 0 to 21; M=9.5, …

Adolescents comprise more than half of the children in child welfare supervised out-of-home care. This article considers the evidence-base for an array of services to adolescents in out-of-home care and evaluates the existing research base for each program. This review advances a framework for considering the critical need to develop, define, and evaluate the essential elements of out-of-home care services for older foster youth. Policy, program, and evaluation recommendations are forwarded.

Homing In On Paradigm Shift: Ryanair Leadership In The Age Of Expensive Air Trave, Uzoechi Nwagbara Dec 2010

Homing In On Paradigm Shift: Ryanair Leadership In The Age Of Expensive Air Trave, Uzoechi Nwagbara

Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara

This investigation borders on a critical evaluation of the leadership style of Ryanair in the age of expensive air travel. Another thrust of the paper is a critical look at the organizational model in place at Ryanair which has made it one of the world’s most successful airlines. In doing this we shall be exploring the leadership model and paradigms as well as leadership style that Michael O’Leary, the CEO of this airline has brought to bear in the organization, which have made it an airline of choice in Europe. Also, the study will be evaluating the transformational change occasioned …

The Nigerian Press, The Public Sphere And Sustainable Development: Engaging The Post Amnesty Deal In The Niger Delta, Uzoechi Nwagbara Dec 2010

The Nigerian Press, The Public Sphere And Sustainable Development: Engaging The Post Amnesty Deal In The Niger Delta, Uzoechi Nwagbara

Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara

The coalescence of effective media and the public sphere is a synergy that brings about democracy, sustainable development and good governance. Irrespective of its shortcomings, the Nigerian media has been described as a bastion of people’s agitation, which impacts on the public sphere, a realm where private individuals meet to address societal questions with the state. This is the case with the Nigerian press, whose duties and ideals have been called to action in the wake of the amnesty deal in the Niger delta. In order to achieve peace and good governance in the region, serious grassroots and national information …

Do “Tough On Crime” Politicians Win More Elections? An Empirical Analysis Of California State Legislators From 1992 To 2000, Steven A. Krieger Dec 2010

Do “Tough On Crime” Politicians Win More Elections? An Empirical Analysis Of California State Legislators From 1992 To 2000, Steven A. Krieger

Steven A. Krieger

Do “tough on crime” politicians win more elections? Conventional wisdom suggests that they do. After all, who was the last public official to win an election based on a “soft on crime” platform? Correspondingly, this unjustified and widespread belief among legislators (and their strategists) makes it extremely difficult for progressive criminal justice bills to become law. There is no empirical literature, however, to support or deny this conventional political wisdom.

A regression analysis was used to answer (1) whether legislators’ election results were impacted by their voting records (based on an assigned crime score) or constituent support for a ballot …

Producing Law For Innovation, Gillian K. Hadfield Dec 2010

Producing Law For Innovation, Gillian K. Hadfield

Gillian K Hadfield

In this contribution to the forthcoming Rules for Growth prepared by the Kauffman Task Force on Law, Innovation and Growth, I first discuss why we need to think of legal infrastructure as economic infrastructure requiring focused economic policymaking, what is wrong with our existing legal infrastructure and why we need to change our modes of legal production. I then set out a vision of what greater reliance on market-based production of legal infrastructure could look like. Finally, I suggest some concrete steps that policymakers can take to move us toward a more open, competitive system of legal production. These include …

Equipping The Garage Guys In Law, Gillian K. Hadfield Dec 2010

Equipping The Garage Guys In Law, Gillian K. Hadfield

Gillian K Hadfield

The twin structural changes of the last few decades—globalization and the emergence of a web-based platform for economic activity--have transformed the economic demand for law. The market for law, however, has struggled to keep up with these changes, showing few signs of the kind of innovation that we see in many other sectors of the new economy. Even our most sophisticated and innovative corporations report difficulty in finding lawyers with the kinds of risk-attuned and creative problem-solving skills that they need (Hadfield 2011). Some large corporate clients have gone so far as to refuse to hire new law firm associates, …

Mcglashan, Anthony Pinto, John C. Markowitz, M. Tracie Shea, Andrew E. Skodol, John G. Gunderson, Mary C. Zanarini, Leslie C. Morey

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

Despite a general consensus that dimensional models are superior to the categorical representations of personality disorders in DSM-IV, proposals for how to depict personality pathology dimensions vary substantially. One important question involves how to separate clinical severity from the style of expression through which personality pathology manifests. This study empirically distinguished stylistic elements of personality pathology symptoms from the overall severity of personality disorder in a large, longitudinally assessed clinical sample (N = 605). Data suggest that generalized severity is the most important single predictor of current and prospective dysfunction, but that stylistic elements also indicate specific areas of difficulty. …

Coverage And Overlap Of The New Social Science And Humanities Journal Lists, Diana Hicks, Jian Wang Dec 2010

Coverage And Overlap Of The New Social Science And Humanities Journal Lists, Diana Hicks, Jian Wang

Diana Hicks

This is a study of coverage and overlap in second generation social sciences and humanities journal lists with attention paid to curation and the judgment of scholarliness. We identify four factors underpinning coverage shortfalls: journal language, country, publisher size and age. Analysing these factors turns our attention to the process of assessing a journal as scholarly, which is a necessary foundation for every list of scholarly journals. Although scholarliness should be a quality inherent in the journal, coverage falls short because groups assessing scholarliness have different perspectives on the social science and humanities literature. That the four factors shape perspectives …

Structural Change And Industrial Classification, Diana Hicks Dec 2010

Structural Change And Industrial Classification, Diana Hicks

Diana Hicks

Understanding of structural change is compromised because scholars do not clearly articulate the limits of the classification infrastructure (NAICS or GICS) that shapes empirical analysis. These limits are particularly salient in the study of innovation, an activity that by its nature challenges existing categories. Because innovative industries are often not part of the classification infrastructure, they are invisible in empirical analyses and in government statistics. This paper examines the classification of a population of highly innovative, often small, firms working in gaming devices, packaging, filtration, photonics, imaging, biomedical research and fabless semiconductor design. I find examples of knowledge integration, vertical …

La Cronología De Chavín De Huántar Y Sus Implicancias Para El Periodo Formativo, John W. Rick, Christian Mesia, Daniel A. Contreras, Silvia R. Kembel, Rosa M. Rick, Matthew Sayre, John Wolf

Daniel A. Contreras

Quarrying Evidence At The Quispisisa Obsidian Source, Ayacucho, Peru, Nicholas Tripcevich, Daniel A. Contreras Dec 2010

Quarrying Evidence At The Quispisisa Obsidian Source, Ayacucho, Peru, Nicholas Tripcevich, Daniel A. Contreras

Daniel A. Contreras

Artifacts made from Quispisisa obsidian are widely disseminated in the Peruvian Andes, but the geological source of the Quispisisa geochemical type was only recently located in southern Ayacucho. Following the positive identification of the source in 1999 by Richard Burger and colleagues, we found evidence of broad quarrying activities in unexplored portions of the source area. We describe 34 quarry pits, some as large as 80 m across, together with evidence of early-stage lithic reduction at the source. We encountered high concentrations of reduction debris associated with more extensive knapping in two localities, but our preliminary evaluation of surface evidence …

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson Dec 2010

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

Every day we, as human beings, maneuver through a myriad of circumstances in our individual and collective life spaces. Central to our experiences is the nature, kind, and quality of our relationships. When we encounter differences (racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, economic, sexual orientation, the mentally and physically challenged), a common issue that often emerges in our experiences is the extent to which we use tolerance in relating to other people and circumstances. For this reason, I want to discuss the nature of tolerance and its limitations, and how to move beyond tolerance by consciously using Universal Energy Laws, discernment, and …

Teaching Vocabulary Through Word Formation Strategies Among Iranian Intermediate Efl Students, Mohammad Ali Nasrollahi, Mohammad Sadeghi Dec 2010

Teaching Vocabulary Through Word Formation Strategies Among Iranian Intermediate Efl Students, Mohammad Ali Nasrollahi, Mohammad Sadeghi

Mohammad Ali Nasrollahi(Ph.D)

The purpose of this study was to determine whether word formation strategy improves vocabulary learning of Iranian intermediate EFL students, or not. Hence, a group of seventy homo-geneous students were selected. They were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. Then, both groups enjoyed a series of similar instructions except that the students in experimental group were required to divide the words they are faced with to their meaningful and functional constituents. In order to make students learn vocabularies through analyzing them to their functional and grammatical affixes, they are led to relate the faced words to their relative groups …
